Inside the MBTA’s Restaurant Deals in Boston | Eater Boston

"Located in a historic conductor’s building across from the Newburyport Commuter Rail, this spot serves dishes like smoked pork belly tacos, Buffalo chicken empanadas and a New England–inspired crispy cod burrito beneath twinkling string lights and colorful sugar skulls. The owner, Erik Metzdorf, revived a derelict property he won a lease for after a 2015 bid, launching from a Kickstarter and a repertoire of taco recipes; he budgeted $342,000 for renovations but says the work ultimately topped $500,000. Under the MBTA lease he took on full responsibility for building upkeep—utilities, HVAC and electrical transformer maintenance, roof repairs—and even cleaning up hazards left on the grounds (including hundreds of hypodermic needles), accepting those costs in exchange for otherwise favorable terms and only infrequent check-ins from the MBTA." - Celina Colby

Google
Wowser! What a great way to end a day in Boston. Right at the Newburyport rail in a super cool converted train station. Service was outstanding and the food was really good. Cubano and Taco hit the spot. Nice beer selection and of course margaritas. Can't wait to hit this spot again on my next commuter rail trip to Boston!

Google
So glad to be back here again! My partner and I had lunch that was very enjoyable! To start we had their sweet potato fries along with a fall sangria and peach rumonada. Our main dishes were the pork belly tacos along with the birria ramen. We also had the repo nitro margarita. Everything was delicious, made fresh, and overall lovely! The interior space was really nice with all the brick and this cool little model replicating the station and metzys building!

Ivy F.

Google
We had a great time at Metzys. Shannon and Tyler took very good care of us and the food was fantastic! Plenty of seating and tons of parking. Plus it's perfect for commuters who want a quick bite. I love this place and we'll definitely be back.😊

Brett B.

Google
Metzy’s is a super cool spot with a fun vibe that is right next to the train depot. The service from Sophia and Shannon was stellar! You should definitely ask for them when you get there and you will be treated like a king (or Queen)! The margaritas are well done and the food is possibly the best Mexican in the south central Newburyport area! Get to Metzy’s to get your groovy Mexican on!

Brian H.

Google
This is a review of the taco truck near plum island airport. The chicken on chicken tacos was boiled and had no seasoning and didn’t even taste fresh. The fish tacos were just okay. For the price of the food you are better off going for fish tacos at sunset club on plum island. It’s outrageous and the quality of the food is poor. Worker was very kind and good.

Google
Love it here! Atmosphere is great. Prices right. Food awesome everytime. Had the sliders special today and they were 🔥 Almost like a chef made an upscale Big Mac… toasted buns, fried pickles, perfect pink patty… etc…👍🏻👍🏻 I appreciate some variety and simple items done well.

Google
Went to Metzy’s tonight with a large party with no reservations. The staff was so accommodating! The food and atmosphere were so great. We all had a fabulous time. Shannon could not do enough for us. Talk about service with a smile. All of the girls were great. We will definitely be back. What a hidden gem!

Google
Super great building with very friendly staff. Nice place to get a drink or sit with friends. However, the food is just okay, quite bland and quite expensive. I was trying to decide between 3 and 4 stars but couldn’t bring myself to put 4 stars given the food. Overall; nice place with nice staff, but the food is not what you would go for

Yelp
We stopped in here while waiting for our train back to Boston. Cute little place conveniently located if you are catching the train. The food was good, service was helpful and we had fun with our friends who live in Newburyport. It was very popular, but it was still very quick - great way to spend time while waiting for your train.

Yelp
Came here after a walk while my fiancé was out of town. Have tried multiple Mexican style eateries in the area and wanted to see how Metzy's stood up to the competition. Much more of a casual vibe, I sat at the bar where I was quickly given a food menu and a cold drink. At 7$ per - the tacos are on the pricier side and not the most authentic, however, they were loaded with chicken and generally enjoyable. The rice was dry and bland, kind of more of a cous cous vibe. Would come back for cheap corona and casual fare. There are better and more authentic options in the area but fast casual always has a place and the location is extremely commuter friendly

Yelp
There is so much good stuff about this place that I'd love to give it 5 stars. Friendly service, cool atmosphere, great food, plus Mexican Cokes (our favorite)! But the late afternoon that we went in, the chips were so salty that we couldn't eat them. It was literally like someone spilled the salt into the chip bin. We ordered Nachos and guac and though the order was huge, the guac was fab, and the melted cheese was golden brown, the salty chips made it impossible to enjoy. Also, a server was restocking the bottled Cokes as we were being seated and she didn't bring the cold ones from the back to the front while adding more, so ours were extremely warm. I'd like to give Metzy's another chance but that'll be up to my sidekick.

Yelp
Stopped in while out for a bike ride in Newburyport. Small but nice little Mexican restaurant. We only had chips and guacamole, plus drinks. We each had the margarita flights. They were all very tasty, with the coconut and the mango coming out on top. The chips were definitely house made and the guacamole was also. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and accommodating with her service.

Mary Ann L.

Yelp
We had a great meal and lots of fun at Metzy's after a commuter train ride with my whole family including 3 year old grandson! Service was a little slow because three servers did everything but with drinks and dips and chips we didn't mind. The old train station made for a nice setting and everyone was friendly. The different tacos were delicious esp. the lobster tacos and shrimp tacos!

Ken L.

Yelp
Cute place, nice server, good margaritas. Salsa and guacamole were good, didn't eat anything else.

Eric J.

Yelp
Third time back to Metzy's. Both of us had the Blackened Shrimp burrito this time-Was Fantastic! The quac! Best I've ever had.. Waitstaff are friendly and attentive and the vibe of atmosphere just makes it a fun place to decompress after work..

Richard G.

Yelp
The absolute worst. Their takeout is ALWAYS messed up. Their staff has no desire to be there and they absolutely let you know. The drinks are completely uninspired.

Vicky O.

Yelp
Metzy's is such a great place to go if you're looking for good margaritas and delicious tacos. Highly recommend a Prickly Pear margarita. Our bartender and server Alex was phenomenal. It was a busier weeknight when we came in, and he was very attentive and friendly. We were also celebrating a birthday and he was able to mix us up some delicious shots that tasted just like a cupcake.

J B.

Yelp
I used to visit the food truck once a week. Everything I got was delicious and correct as ordered. I have never had my take-out order served correctly since they moved to this location. The service is terrible, to the point that you have to interrupt a chat to get someone to look at your takeout order that has been sitting in a bag on a shelf for five minutes. That bag always contains at least one item that is incorrect. I try to order extra to cover the item I will inevitably just drop in the garbage. Their menu is back to Mexican after a brief failed fusion experiment, which is nice. A teen-only hiring strategy is probably not the best, but the space is a very cool converted train depot. Small, but very open and clean.
google avatar

Valerie M.

Yelp
Good drinks. Not impressed with the tacos or ramen though. Way too much chicken on the tacos and I can't even describe what the ramen was like but we couldn't finish it.
google avatar

Sandra P.

Yelp
Just being back the tacos from the taco truck. Plenty of parking in the lot for the tons of people that would come back for those tacos! Ordered flour tortillas, got corn Ordered pork, got beef Ordered salsa, it was sour BRING BACK THE TRUCK CHEFS!

Susan F.

Yelp
The food is great! The waitstaff are great! The Ambiance is relaxing and clean. The burritos are great! We are frequent regulars who enjoy it there.

Melissa K.

Yelp
Wanted to try their Pazole, it just looks like goo. Jalapeños weren't fresh, they were pickled.(maybe specify it in the description) and I didn't get my sour cream as well. Lol I've had many Pazoles and this is definitely the worst "soup" I've had.

Bernie L.

Yelp
Went a year ago and it was Perfect in every way , definitely 5 stars Went today and I should have mentioned to the waitress but didn't want to spoil the other persons opinion only to find out on the way home that person's main food and appetizer were as Cold as mine Not sure what was up ???? But very dissatisfied. Shame on me for not bringing it up to the staffs attention for a cold &70+ meal
google avatar

Felice D.

Yelp
This review is 5 stars for the food and 1 star for the Toast app (take away). I am a Metzy's regular and love their chips & salsa, pork shoulder burritos, and shrimp quesadillas. However, whenever I order something to go on their Toast app, the person packing my food gets the order wrong Every. Single. Time. It's really annoying. I hear every time I go there to pick something up, "Oh, your extra chips and salsa did not come through on the slip even though you paid for it." Well then, FIX IT. Other than this major inconvenience, I love the place.

Ashlynne X.

Yelp
Not one to write a review but I think people should leave more GOOD reviews! We came in for a quick drink and food before the train. The manager who was also our bartender was very nice, I'd come back just for his kind energy. The margs and food were 10/10! Thank you!
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
The best in the Northshore! Great experience better food and the drinks GTFO! Love this place! Owner is onsite and greets the customers! Sunday has live music. We tried the pork belly app and fresh guacamole and salsa! Love it. Bon Apetit!!

Yelp
I was really hoping to give this restaurant a great review, but was very disappointed. Went with my Sister and two nieces. Blueberry margarita- A+ Lemonade A+ Guacamole A+ Service B+ (only 2 servers) our server was pleasant Fish taco fish prepared well other than that no taste C Chicken Quesadilla- more cheese than chicken C Steak burrito bowls F Both steak burrito bowls were cold. Rice was clumpy Churros burnt & no taste F I think they were having a bad day equipment and staff wise. Could not get a hot coffee machine was broken. Nice space and spot I don't think we will be returning.

Yelp
I so wanted to like this place, specially because of some of the items on the menu seemed really interesting and so were the photos listed on the website. But the taste of the food and the service let us down big time. We sat outside and the restaurant was not even at 40% capacity, but it took forever for the food to arrive. Our server (forgot his name) was new and still in training but he was a sweetheart. But the amazing service could not compensate for the underwhelming food we ate. The Loaded Sweet Potato Fries looked and tasted sad. The fries had no crunch and looked like someone served it to us halfway while they were still putting it together. The chicken wings were good, but cold by the time they made it to us. We also tried the Hush Puppies Taco. The hush puppies were tasty by themselves but the whole taco was just so meh. The photos on the website and on yelp looked so good but the food we got was a complete 180. I think there is a lot of scope for the restaurant if they work on the taste and presentation of the food.

Meg S.

Yelp
Worst Mexican food ever. I am not usually compelled to write a review good or bad, but I need to warn others to save your hard earned money. Everything from the ambience to the poor service to the horrible tasting food was a negative dining experience. They brought the wrong drink and I had to walk to the bar myself to change it because my waiter was also the bartender. We had to ask for chips and salsa which were the consistency of pudding, meal came very late after multiple apologies and was burnt and inedible. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Unless you are just drinking maybe, stay away from this place.so disappointing

Darren F.

Yelp
The 4 way of great food, good service, solid prices and atmosphere can all be found here. It'd be a top place for a vegan with the plant dairy and fillings that are so hard to find in Mexican places. The meat options are all solid and fish tacos and hush puppies are a favorite. They also use support other local businesses by using their food. The outdoor patio is great because it's covered in the summer and the inside is nicely decorated as well, and clean. Staff is always great and friendly. The prices are great too and it leaves an affordable options in Newburyport if other places are outside your wheelhouse without skimping on quality or quantity. Plenty of parking because of the T spot location and the ambiance of the old rail building is very cool. Please try it out.

Jackie L.

Yelp
Done done done. I have given Metzy's 3 chances. Once in the restaurant (lazy service, awful drinks, subpar food.) and twice for takeout The takeout is inedible. The seasoning horrible. Its clear that the staff sees the Take-out as "heat up what we've got sitting around in the microwave, toss it in these bags and who cares if its awful, they aren't physically here so they probably won't complain." The people that work there seem to be irritated you came in to get your stuff I went with two other couples and ate inside. The waitress was slow and hated her job. The food was sub par and the drinks were weak and terrible. They should close down. They weren't bad 5 years ago but they've lost me and anyone I talk to.

Lindsey L.

Yelp
Service was great . My fish taco was delish. Plenty of room and games outside for my little ones to run around while I enjoyed a margarita on the patio. Easy parking!

Yelp
I have never given a negative review on this platform nor any other, but this was necessary. My boyfriend and I came to town for the weekend for my birthday, and went for dinner at Metzy's an hour ago. The hostess greeted us when we arrived and we asked if we could sit at the bar. She told us we were welcome to grab some seats that were available. Upon sitting, we immediately noticed the dirty glasses lined up in front of us. We tried to be understanding and were looking forward to the food, as the menu sounded great. The bartender was on the other side of the L shaped bar and didn't acknowledge us when we sat. We waited for 10 minutes as servers placed more dirty glasses in front of us, and no one acknowledged us with a "Hello," offer of a menu, a glass of water, nothing. After 10 minutes the bartender came over to our side and was standing directly in front of us, stacking more dirty glasses, and having a conversation over our heads with some guests on the other side of the bar about how this is her second job and she was very tired tonight. At this point we were sure she would say hello, offer us a menu, and/or ask us if we'd like a drink. Instead, she completely ignored us, continued to talk over our heads, and then walked back to the other side of the bar without a word to us. We stood up and left. The same host that told us we could have a seat, told us to "have a good night" seemingly unaware that we were there for 15 minutes with no acknowledgement, menu, or drink. It was extremely off-putting, rude, and unprofessional service on all accounts. We will not be returning and I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

Joanna Eberhart ..

Yelp
The salsa was delicious! BBQ shrimp enchilada with mole sauce...very BBQ sauce tasting, very few shrimp, very crusty tortilla and very tasteless mole. It's a great place for a drink and chips/salsa.
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Burritos are so well proportioned so you get a pretty even bite every time. The tacos are a little messy, but still delicious.

Ck C.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch and it was excellent. Great vibe! Fresh ingredients (salsa was the best) and quick service. Looking forward to coming back for margaritas!
google avatar

Kenji G.

Yelp
Great space food not great. Drinks good. Pork for tacos in tough cubes very wet like they soak in a steam table. Shredded chicken tasteless. Salad bowl was like a family holiday where everyone doesn't like each other. Really it's my fault any place with Mexican, tapas and ramen probably won't be ideal.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed, would not return. Ambiance felt cluttered. Restaurant was cold inside. Food was uninspired and expensive. 20$ for 3 tacos in Boston at a nice place with high quality ingredients is understandable but not here. We left hungry and wishing we just went downtown Newburyport for food as we usually do.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
This place serves overpriced garbage in the guise of "Mexican food ". Tasteless, boring, cold, gross garbage. Rice and beans were totally inedible and tasted like chemicals. Only thing worth going for is the cold Modelo. Stay away.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
Great hidden gem! I have had Metzy's good truck by Plum Island, but first time eating at the full restaurant -- did not disappoint!! The street corn was awesome and burrito was crispy and delicious. Definitely stop by this summer for the outdoor seating.
google avatar

Anne T.

Yelp
I just read this again and the memory came back. I left out the worst part. There was a hair on our dish of chewy nachos...a black hair, we are both blonds. The barkeep insinuated it looked like a black dog hair. Neither of us have a dog. They did nothing to fix it and I felt they thought we'd set it up for a free lunch. THAT would never happen and they lost a couple of good customers. Funny how some moments stay with you.
google avatar

Urvi M.

Yelp
We love Metzy's cantina! We often come here for their strong margaritas (!!) and vegan quesadillas or burritos. We love their tofu and beyond meat options! Service is great although they always seem understaffed - but totally not unusual for the times we live in.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
This is a review for both a take out order and dine in experience at the bar. By the time I left, I would have preferred Taco Bell. Firstly, they make their margaritas with low quality tequila, tons of triple sec, low quality bar ice, and sugary watered down fake lime juice (the least they could do is use fresh lime juice). For their "flavored" margaritas they're using Monin Syrups. These concoctions couldn't be more sugar filled. It's like amateur hour at this bar. After I received my margarita, it was another 20 minutes before I received my chips and salsa at the bar or was even asked if I'd like a water. My corn salad arrived a few minutes after and after I found 4 hairs in the salad that didn't match my own, I was done. I wanted to run out of this establishment. i quickly paid the bill and left. Even though my entire corn salad was left over, the server at the bar neglected to ask if anything was wrong (oblivious). On top of all of that, I got a take out order only to find out they neither offer crunchy hard shell taco shells or beef tacos?!? No beef tacos....I'm pretty certain beef tacos are THE MOST POPULAR taco choice amongst humans. Huge miss there. This place is awful and to make matters WORSE, ownership commented on this post trying to defend the harrowing experience I had instead of just apologizing. Yelp is a place for shared, honest, experiences. If you cannot accept that, then be more alert and notice when you are sitting at the bar and your staff is falling short. It's beyond me why ownership would comment on my review defending this type of experience? It only makes everything worse. STOP doing that!! In summation, go elsewhere.

Colleen M.

Yelp
We had burritos! Exc! Our margaritas were phenomenal! I'm not a Mexican food lover But I found this menu had enough variety! To satisfy all of us! Thank you! Will be back!

Damion S.

Yelp
To start the service seemed less than excited that we would dine in Vs take out. After asking how they could help us, the hostess cleans and set a table, walked over to us and pointed in the direction on the table saying 2nd one... Lights in the restaurant @730 pm are all the way up & you can tell the staff is busy already cleaning up for an 8pm close. Server was nice enough, drinks and food ordered 2 tacos and a salad with a fried pickle starter. Drinks.a were ok.. pickles... not good, barely battered and not good. Tacos ok, chicken & fish (more slaw than fish) Avocado salad decent. During our dinner, the crew, was more occupied with sweeping the floor, emptying trash and talking than providing service. Not even a have a good night out the door, when passing by (maybe) the manager and other staff member. Don't let the door hit you... No thanks

Betty S.

Yelp
Metzey's sucks! 2nd time, in a row, I've gone there to eat dinner - they're closed! 4 hours before they're supposed to! This time - the cook didn't have a baby sitter! This place is a goddamn joke! Last time it was some other half-assed excuse. Get your shit together!

Michael S.

Yelp
Good food, good music, excellent atmosphere. Recommend going on Thursday nights for the live music. Service was fast and friendly. Had chips and salsa, the crispy cod tacos and Smoke and Spice Tequila drinks Flavors on everything was good and not overpowering. I'll be going back soon.
google avatar

scott a.

Yelp
Nice crowd tonight - pleasant live music. Had the smoked pork belly burrito - essentially rubber. Clearly not smoked low and slow enough. Gotta fix that - no excuse.

Jesse M.

Yelp
Food was the most basic taste you can think of. No seasoning or flavor in the burrito. Very bland. Wings suck badddd..

Bill F.

Yelp
Just had a smoked pork belly burrito from Metzy's. if you like chunks of fat in cheez whiz this place is for you. Absolutely disgusting. My wife had a crispy cod burrito. Both went in the trash.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Mediocre. Drove up to Metzys since it was a nice day and they were also hosting music video bingo. We started off with some drinks that were okay. I had a blackberry margarita, which had no blackberry flavor....just blackberrys thrown in it. My husbands strawberry marg did taste better than mine. Also ordered the salsa flight - guac, ranchero and pineapple mango....The pineapple mango was the star of the show. Guac was definitely missing something. We finally decided on some food. Ordered a burrito, two tacos and some refried beans. Saw our food finally come up to the pass and then just sit there and sit. This place seems to be more involved in making sure that all of there take out orders and completed first before the in house patrons are taken care of. And also the host of bingo was very dull. This place left a lot to be desired especially at a $104.00 bill.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
So many vegetarian options and the food is delicious! Also went early with a friend and we got 1/2 price appetizers! Yay! My new favorite spot.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Great food and fantastic Margs! Sorry at the tacos before I could snap a pic! Def stop need to try if your in the area!
google avatar

Whitney M.

Yelp
Came here today with my friends, their son, and our dogs and sat in the patio. This is a cool spot at the train station with a simple Menu of creative tacos and burritos. I knocked it down stars because service was UNBELIEVABLY slow. INSANELY SLOW. The waitress also missed obvious things - like napkins, drinks, forks... The playlist was allll over the place - genres, decades, moods were inconsistent. The food was mostly great! The Cuban taco in particular was Delicious. The slow service really was an issue though. I'd give it another shot because the food was good and they allow dogs - I think better service would drastically change the experience.

Bo R.

Yelp
Metzys is my favorite place to go for a burrito. You can either stay and eat inside their fun little cantina or just do pick up/delivery. The food here is great! I absolutely recommend the Chicken Burrito w/ hush puppies on the side. They have Jarritos soda (all the best flavors). I come here about once a week and I wouldn't have it any other way. They did add some desserts onto their menu (or maybe I'm just noticing them) I recently got their milkshake (vanilla w/ choc syrup, Oreos and graham crackers) If you go you will never be disappointed. They nailed it with this place!

Yelp
I keep updating my review because I keep wanting Metzy's to work. Newburyport seems to be 90% seafood restaurants and alternatives are always welcome. I mean, my name is even on the wall as a donor because I loved this place early on. I still have two main issues: 1. The service at the restaurant (not food truck) started bad and never got better. Last order was incredibly disappointing. I checked my order as I do every time since I've had issues, and count three boxes. We ordered two tacos for my daughter and found we were missing half of her dinner. Called back and the attitude we got from the girl answering the phone was ridiculous, acting like it was our fault for them forgetting the taco. I've never been made to feel so bad asking for a refund for food that was completely missing. Mistakes happen, but you own up to them. Don't insult your customers with your snarky, mean attitude Isabelle. 2. If it's not a missing item, then there's a problem with the food. I get the exact same item every time (pork bowl), and when my order is correct then the pork will either be (a) have huge pieces of fat that should have been trimmed from the butt/shoulder before it was cooked or (b) be so incredibly spicy that it's inedible (and this comes from someone with a dozen hot sauces in the fridge).

David B.

Yelp
Home of the world's worst burrito. This one is called the Black Bean Hush Puppies Burrito. First off, it's not a burrito. It's served cold, cut in half. That's called a wrap, not a burrito. Then the flavors: brussels sprouts and black beans, which could work in some other context, are covered in sauerkraut (aka "curtido slaw") -- a revolting combination. Cubes of raw butternut squash add nothing. No sign of hushpuppies (veggie fritters) anywhere. Yuck.
