"Mex 1 serves the Lowcountry with multiple Charleston locations and offers two nacho sizes for guests to nibble on while sipping a strong margarita. The large and in charge Big Mamas pair seasoned black beans, fresh guacamole, and queso with one of five protein options like smoked chicken or pork." - Parker Milner

"The Lowcountry has its third installment of taqueria Mex 1 Coastal Cantina with today’s opening at 1109 Park West Blvd., Mount Pleasant. As of 11 a.m. today, those in love with the restaurant’s tacos, quesadillas, and Baja bowls will have a third space to spread out into. Mex 1 opened in West Ashley in 2012 with Mexican-inspired fare and plenty of margaritas. The goal of the restaurant is to 'to serve fresh, flavorful Baja Mexican fare and premium tequilas in a friendly, laidback, ‘come as you are’ atmosphere — a vibe that embodies the surfing and coastal lifestyle paralleled to the Baja Peninsula culture.' The eatery unlocked its second store on Sullivan’s Island in 2016. There are also plans to expand downtown next to Tattooed Moose. With all this expansion, it seems like the next step would be to take Mex 1 on the road — perhaps Columbia or Charlotte? The Mount Pleasant restaurant opens seven days a week, at 11:00 a.m. every day. Check online for the full menu." - Erin Perkins

Well, it's gonna go by Meh-x 1 from now on. It's standard Tex-Mex/Mexican fare that is nothing to write home about. It's fine for a night out with the family. One aspect that stood out was the service - our waitress was fantastic! The best things we had were: The pineapple habanero margarita - though the first one was very good and the second one markedly less so. The side salad - fresh and tasty with a yummy lime crema dressing. The fresh fish taco (catch of the day- snapper) - quite good. The corn elote bowl - tasty. Carne asada taco was not Carne asada - it had almost no flavor at all. Same with the Carnitas with pineapple. Nachos were ok, but not great, and the ridiculous number of chips on the plate, coupled with the fact that 70% had nothing on them was both a pity and a waste. Same with the special order nachos that had so little cheese, it was hard to call them nachos. Chocolate cake was OK and very sweet. Overall, it's a cute place with a good atmosphere and very good service, but don't go for the food.

Google
We ordered four different dishes, all very delicious and generous portions. Highly recommend

At 5:00, with nobody except our group at the restaurant, one server made one of the children from our baseball team move from a table he was sitting at because it was “her table” and didn’t want to have it occupied. The server handling our group however was pleasant and accommodating. The food needs significant improvement (steak quesadilla was as bad as I’ve had, only ate one part, hence the pic) Should have taken the group to Taco Bell, would have been cheaper and everyone would have had a better meal. Margaritas were good though…

Google
The Happy Hour drink was on sale for 9$. The food was disgusting and the chicken was raw . I was told it was because it was smoked. It tasted like they pulled It out of the trash. Our waiter was nice at first then did a 360 into someone that didn’t GAF. It was weird. This was my second chance dining in at this location and the review remains the same. Gross. I wish I had my $100 back.

Google
Went for happy hour (best deals in town!) and got the hydrator ($6 and it was just right!) ordered the santos shrimp quesadilla and not only was it delicious, but it was a huge portion and brought some home (which my kids devoured). The chips and salsa are always outstanding so you cannot go wrong. Very relaxed atmosphere, and the staff is always friendly, courteous, and speedy.

Google
We came here with our 2 kids under 4 on a Saturday evening. It wasnt very busy and it made for a good place to bring kids. My husband really liked his quesadilla. My son got a bowl from the kids menu. It was good but the pieces of chicken were really big. Our sever was very friendly and attentive.

Google
Good food! The menu was smaller than we expected. The atmosphere was fun. Not fancy at all. The service was good!

Amanda Marsiglia

Google
Very nice place. Our server was the sweetest, bummed we didn't remember his name. I'd definitely go back here for sure. Margarita's are soo good!!!

Yelp
If you're looking for a good meal, this place is a great choice. Food is really, really good no matter what you get. However, if you're looking for a nice drink, I wouldn't recommend. The drinks taste good, but there doesn't seem to be even a drop of alcohol in them. $11 for a small margarita that does nothing for you but maybe a sugar rush. Spent $44 on 4 drinks for a tummy ache. Long story short, food yes, drinks no.

Woody G.

Yelp
The chips are always light, crisp and complemented by salsa with just the right flavor. Bangin' shrimp tacos are great as are the crispy beef. The black beans over rice are an exceptional upgrade from the usual rice and beans served by most Mexican restaurants.

Kim L.

Yelp
Surprised at the nice ambiance in this tucked away strip mall spot. Service was great, good music and nice relaxed atmosphere on the patio. Also lots of friendly vegetarian options. We had the Miami vice margaritas (like a strawberry pina colada) which were strong and delicious, the triple dip combo which was great, and the cauliflower mushroom bowls. All great. Will be back here again for sure

Andrew K.

Yelp
Here's my question to you Yelp universe. It's 5 o clock on a Saturday - where are you ? Why are we the only two people here? Pineapple infused tequila is very good. You can get it in drinks or as a shot. Pineapple Ranch water is very good and if you are not so crazy about the taste of tequila this is the one for you. The El Jefe (pictured ) is delicious and so strong you are limited to two. They have 10 beers on tap and more in the cooler. Try the Triple Dipper as a happy choice for all. Fresh corn. Quac that my wife can't get enough of and the queso is second to none. If you have not been here you are missing out. Tip the staff. They are great too

Danielle M.

Yelp
I sat at the bar with Reagan and she was so personable and fun. Places with customer service like hers is the reason I sit at the bar. Great lady. Food was good. Margaritas were good.

Suzanne H.

Yelp
I used to come here often. Place has gone down hill. Food is WAY over priced and mediocre. Drinks are good but bar is sticky. Trying to play games was a disappointment in the little game room. No coin machine or tokens. Only one game but 3 types of claws. Hum machines and cluttered from being used as storage. It makes sense why the place was almost empty the entire time we were there. I can say the bartender was very attentive.

Candyce V.

Yelp
Willing to give this restaurant another try, but I wasn't wowed. The service was very good, though, so I can chalk it up to not ordering the highlights of the menu...I had a chicken quesadilla and Cesar salad. Mom really liked her shrimp tacos, so I may order those instead. Our margaritas tasted fresh, so this may be the spot for happy hour and not so much dinner.

Yelp
We came back four years later and we weren't nearly impressed. Food was good - some of it just ok. Drinks were ok. And the prices were sky high. It's an easy place to run into if you need something fast. But, be ready to pay for it. I would skip this option given so many more places in the area.

Teresa F.

Yelp
Delicious tacos and margs in a casual beach atmosphere. Love the surfer videos and large bar. The guacamole was so good and the chips served with it so thin and fresh. Can't go wrong with the Banging Shrimp taco but grilled shrimp and fish taco also on point.

Gina P.

Yelp
Fantastic!!! Same here for a late lunch Saturday evening and liked it so much we came back Sunday for brunch!!! Had the street corn queso, amazing! Great flavor and spices! The chicken quesadilla was so big my boyfriend had to help me finish it. I was worried the skinny strawberry margarita would be watery but was extremely pleasantly surprised. I could (and intend to) drink a pitcher of those! For brunch I had the tacos which were very flavorful and satisfying. Both young ladies who served us couldn't have been sweeter!!!! !!!!

Rob F.

Yelp
Consistently good food and something for everyone. Comfortable space, I'm sincerely surprised that it's not packed all of the time, I've only seen 'busy' and it's not imposing. Not cheap but def not "expensive" .. it is in Mt P

Rachel O.

Yelp
Meh Mexican food if you don't care for, or can't find, the authentic stuff. It's pretty "gringo" style with flour tortillas as the default but everyone can probably find something on the menu. The margs are delicious.

Tanner D.

Yelp
I stopped here with my partner one night on a whim. I ordered a steak bowl, she ordered a chicken bowl, and we shared chips and queso. I do have to say the service wasn't bad, which is what the vast majority of these 2 stars is for. The food was barely seasoned, not of very good quality, and highly overpriced. I've had much better steak bowls for nearly half the price that this cost (at least $20 per bowl) This came across as more of a spot to socialize and get drinks than an actual restaurant.

Kelly S.

Yelp
Delicious with friendly staff and a kitchen willing to go the extra mile. Love the outdoor patio!

Blakely G.

Yelp
Awesome food with great service! I ordered 1 Bangin Shrimp taco with 2 of the Baja Fish tacos. Both were great but the shrimp taco was SO much better. They also put a lot of fish/shrimp in the taco which I appreciated- felt like you got your money's worth!

Stephan C.

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch. The interior is decorated with actual boat hulls. It's very interesting. I sat at the bar and noticed Negra Modelo was on tap, and they offered fresh guacamole. A great start! Also added a crispy beef taco that was really delicious. TexMex is offered here. It's good. I've had better, I've had worse. The restaurant is very welcoming and the staff are all friendly and helpful. I'll be back. Also a great outside patio that's pet friendly. 03/22/2020 Went to Mex-1 in Mount Pleasant for take out. Everything was delicious! I even brought home a half gallon of Negro Modelo. Coty was my server. An excellent employee. Can't wait for them to open after the pandemic mess. Support our local businesses.

Myron S.

Yelp
Large portions, free chips and salsa are awesome party atmosphere! I highly recommend this restaurant!

Sue H.

Yelp
Marissa was wonderful! So pleasant and attentive! Excellent service! I would definitely recommend Mex1 to friends and family!

Marcelena S.

Yelp
I frequently go here and I seriously thought I have already reviewed this place. So first of all the owner, Dave & his staff are such nice people... always checking on you, your meal/ drinks and making sure you're doing alright. Kira, Cody and Lee are all great bartenders. Grant is a good server there and always makes me laugh. Although not authentic Mexican food (which is my favorite) and being more Tex-mex style I like this place more for the drinks... But I definitely love their chips and salsa, corn Queso and most of their taco menu options. I further enjoy their atmosphere and community feel to this bar/ restaurant. It's a favorite of mine and I'm hoping it's here to stay!! I know their 1 year anniversary is next weekend and I'm hoping to make it out!

Buckeye F.

Yelp
The big momma nachos are the best! Definitely recommend the carne asada tacos and quesadillas as they are always amazing! Only down falls are, they need a better drink selection and they are a bit overpriced for both food and drinks.

Barbara S.

Yelp
We had a great night at Mex 1--- thanks to Avery! He really went above and beyond to help us get a great table, great drinks, and great food. The customer service was excellent! We will be back soon! Thank you, Avery!!!

Bill D.

Yelp
Solid Baja style cantina. Outstanding fish tacos in flour tortillas!!!! Get them and skip the rest. Really good house margarita. Other tacos were good to just ok. The fried shrimp was good but way too much honey sauce. The meat ones were just ok. A bit dry and bland. The street corn -sans cob - was a complete miss. Off the cob should have been a high win but the corn while sweet just didn't do much for me. The wait staff get a pass. It's COVID so glad to have someone serving us.

Charlotte C.

Yelp
I used to love this place up until last night. I've never felt more uncomfortable at an establishment in my life. I ordered a marg, I won the dance off for music bingo (OW OW) and therefore received a complementary free drink. After I finished my first margarita, the Manager named Mark (maybe!?) started making me a second margarita without me asking... I stopped him when he was making it and told him I wanted to use my free drink coupon on the margarita I had already ordered. He said okay and stopped making the drink. 15 minutes later he approached me and put a margarita in my face (I was sitting at the bar) and said it tastes better when it's free.. (this was WITHOUT me asking for him to make me a margarita). Check comes and he charges me for a margarita. I told him the first one I used my dance coupon on and the second one you gave to me and said it was free... because I didn't ask for it and he said "oh! So you think you deserve two free drinks!?!). I tried to explain the situation and he kept insisting I was wrong. It was really awkward. Couldn't tell if he was trying to take my money or make me drunk?!? *On a happy note the tacos were good and the spicy marg was tasty. The music bingo host is amazing! I had a TON of FUN that night besides the weird experience with the General Manager

Violet Y.

Yelp
service was good but not impressed at all with the food. the queso was half melted and had chunks of cheese in it. it just wasn't good and thick. I got a bowl and the chicken tasted like beef jerky in the bowl and my dad shrimp was weird. it was all weird and flavorless. my drink was my favorite part which says a lot

Karen S.

Yelp
we order from this place at least once a month. very good good. quick and easy! service is nice and there is outdoor seating and the place is well maintained.

Brinton T.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my meal. Fish tacos were generous and well seasoned. Staff was very attentive and the GM Mark was present and focused on our experience.

Eric S.

Yelp
So bad it's almost like a bad reality show.. It makes me so surprised anyone eats here more then once. We all get scammed we spend money on embarrassing attempts at Mexican food. I forgot to check before eating here and would have not walked in with their 3.5 star rating. Stay away and maybe hit Taco Bell for cheaper option and less of a stomach ache.

Silas M.

Yelp
Horrible serving size of food, literally no seasoning in the food whatsoever. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Literally a scam!!

Astrid B.

Yelp
Pretty much the most average mexican food you can buy. I wouldn't call it bad but I bet there is definitely some better food closeby. Not a place I'd suggest, but there's nothing wrong with it. Service was good

Jonpaul S.

Yelp
We love Mex 1. Its a wonderful spot for lunch. We have yet to come for dinner...I love to eat so the portions may be a tad small for dinner but they are perfect for lunch. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is super friendly. This is our go to spot for Margaritas, lunch, good company, and bangin shrimp. See you all very soon! Cheers!

sheryl f.

Yelp
First time eating here and the service/food was on point. Avery constantly checked on us and was helpful with recommendations. Food came out quickly even though it was packed on a Friday night. Will definitely return.

Joan M.

Yelp
Well, I'm obviously out of the loop. I never knew Mex 1 was opened & operating now for the longest time.. right here in Park West in the Publix Parking lot. A friend and I went for dinner last night around six prior to attending my favorite Trivia night right down the road. It's a lively spot. The place was packed with families. The food is ok. A typical American style Mexican food place with a slight twist. The servers and all staff actually were very helpful and accommodating. The space is large and decor is cute, beach sporty style with lots of TV's and a big bar. Yes, I would come back here for a casual lunch or a casual dinner. I'm glad to see yet another restaurant open in this space. I hope it does well. By the looks of things last night they are well on their way.

David B.

Yelp
Ok we stopped in the first week they opened so this probably is not the time for a review. Regardless we needed a new place like this in north Mt p. The decor is excellent. They have a nice bar and outdoor patio. Plenty of seating and a great community table. The place was packed. Lots of families and kids here early as well. We stopped by one evening after 8 and the crowd was more in line with with what you would expect with the bar area very busy. While we did not eat several folks by us ordered. The food was a bit slow coming but I have no doubt that they will work this out over the next few weeks. BTW, they have some nice size TVs in the bar area that made watching the games really nice. One other thing, they have a great selection of tequila as one would expect and yes we sampled some good ones like their Don Julio 1942....

Hoang Vi F.

Yelp
I love their happy hour and they have great tec mex! I love their chicken nachos as it can feed a whole crew! Their prices are reasonable to and I love their locations one on Sullivan's and one in North Mount Pleasant! Always a good time here can't wait to go back!

Grace E.

Yelp
The BANGIN' SHRIMP. Is absolutely to die for. My mouth was oozing as I bit into one of their big, juicy, spicy, shrimp. I usually get the bangin' tacos, but I decided to get the bangin' Baja bowl, and let me just say, it was totally worth the switch up. And the slice of lime so perfectly pairs with the rice and beans. I don't know what sauce they drizzle on top of it all but it is worth the try. I recommend this place 10 times out of 10. Not to mention the service is great

Jason C.

Yelp
We came in Saturday night, it was slower but we had Laura taking care of us. She had great recommendations for things to do our last day in town.We can't wait for our next trip down for that Bangin Shrimp!

Harris N.

Yelp
I came to Mex 1 for a business meeting, Laura was our server who had great recommendations, Cabo Salad is the way to go. We will be back soon! Thanks for having us!

Christy L.

Yelp
A few visits to Mex 1 Park Circle since the quarantine allowed outdoor dining ! Grateful for a fun deck with spacious table seating ! Food remains consistent. Given the conditions they have adjusted well and quickly to paper product and tech menu ( Scan ) ..... staff is positive , service quick and as always the queso - delish !

Lauren V.

Yelp
Do NOT give this place your money. I never write reviews but had to after our meal here. Absolutely the worst meal we've ever had at a restaurant. Mexican is not that hard, especially when you're serving only tacos & quesadillas. The corn tortillas weren't even warmed, cold ass tortillas that broke apart in your hand. They tasted terrible we actually sent them back. I also ordered a salad that was a bowl of romaine lettuce, maybe 1 tbsp of corn and 6 of the tiniest shrimp you've ever seen. Oh and literally 1 slice (ONE slice! of bell pepper) - I basically paid for lettuce. All their margaritas are premade with their sour mix that is SOOOOO sweet & we ordered the "skinny" less sweet version. I don't understand how this place is still surviving and has patrons, save your money and do not go. The wait staff are basically all teenagers wearing booty shorts. Anyone giving this place good reviews doesn't know what Mexican food should taste like.

David H.

Yelp
Margarita was too sweet. Corn dish had a very strange flavor. Fish taco was OK. Our outdoor seat had a great view of a box of garbage. Shrimp was not cooked completely.

David S.

Yelp
Jessica exists, she makes the shrimp more "bangin" than it already is! Stop reading this review and visit Jess!

Carlo W.

Yelp
Food was great! Was there just before closing so not everything was available. Service was good. Cute atmosphere. Prices are high! Would return, but not often on my budget.

Suzanne T.

Yelp
Veggie quesadilla was awesome, but even better- the hostess delivered it to me in my car out front! Great service is alive and well here!!!

Cayce S.

Yelp
Mex 1 is my neighborhood go to for great food and even better drinks! My boyfriend and I go frequently and always love when our favorite bartender, Jessie is working! She always has a fun drink suggestion for me, and always remembers both mine and my boyfriend's orders. It's so refreshing to see someone who is great at their job and also a wonderful person to have a margarita with! I highly suggest the nachos (huge)! and if Jessie makes your drink, it'll be perfect! Thanks mex 1 for always being our go to!

Gary M.

Yelp
Quickly got seated. Nice area on outdoor patio with good music one man band. Waitress came quickly and got our drink order. Margarita was outstanding. Got food fast. Big crowd. Food was really great. Banging shrimp tacos. Very clean and nice atmosphere.

Stephanie N.

Yelp
I've gone to Mex 1 for the last time. Yelp is giving me a message to be gentle because of restaurants struggling during Covid. This place had awful service and drinks before Covid! It took one hour and forty minutes to get food. Our group sent drinks back. Could not taste tequila in our margaritas. Had trivia guy there; his mouth was filthy and there were kids in the restaurant!Done!

Amy E.

Yelp
Had a nice dinner tonight. Easy parking, got a table right away and the service was good. It's located in the Park West Shopping area where Publix is located. You have plenty of good tv viewing and it is a nice atmosphere. Everything was actually real good. Cocktails, chips, queso appetizer and the pork tacos were very tasty. Go by and check the place out. (Tip: trio appetizer wasn't worth it. Just get the queso on its own. You already get a salsa with the chips and we all had guacamole with our food)

Joanna C.

Yelp
These 3 star and less reviews are nonsense. Do you like standard american-inspired Mexican tacos? Do you like good drinks and guacamole? Do you like a lively atmosphere? If you answered yes, this place is 5 stars for you. The tacos are fresh and flavorful; guacamole is addictive, drinks strong (could be more flavorful) and the crowd is solid. It's the spot MtP needed and is a great spot for a casual night out and fun time.

AE W.

Yelp
Loud, LOudER, LOUDEST. I guess that's what the people wanted around here, so they got it. No imagination, really. Just a loud bar set in a strip mall. I actually saw mothers bringing their babies in this place. The skimpy servings are way overpriceded and like a previous reviewer stated, bland. Visited this bar Saturday, October 27 at 6pm.
