12 Best Peruvian Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"It’s been well over three decades since Juan Alfaro opened Mex Peru Gipsy right by Santee Alley in Downtown, and the restaurant feels as relevant as ever. The bestseller is the lomo saltado, but there are other items worth trying too like the ceviche and a gypsy-inspired pork chop dish served with a truly spicy mole." - Cathy Chaplin

Google
5 Stars - A Hidden Gem with Heart and Flavor! I stopped by Mex Peru Gipsy yesterday morning and was seriously impressed. This place is unassuming but packed with soul. I ordered the Lomo Saltado—juicy beef strips sautéed with onions, tomatoes, and fries, all perfectly seasoned and served with a generous scoop of fluffy white rice. Every bite had that homemade comfort feel, like someone’s abuelita was back there cooking with love. I also appreciated the little touches—like the salsa and green sauce on the side that added the perfect heat and zest. The vibe is low-key but friendly, with the kitchen action visible right behind the counter. You know it’s real when the pots are clanking and the aromas hit you before the plate even lands. They’ve got a cool menu with a mix of Peruvian and Mexican dishes—Caldo de Gallina, Parihuela, Tortas, and Tacos. Definitely planning to come back and try the tallarin saltado next time. If you’re in the area and craving something hearty, flavorful, and made with care, don’t sleep on this spot.

Just got off work in the area, and we were looking for food places. We found this place with good reviews, and we decided to come by. We parked in a parking lot closed by, and walked over. This is a small restaurant that has a few stools (bar style) inside the restaurant, and they also have a few table set up outside of the restaurant. They play wonderful music, and we were able to listen to it outside of the restaurant. We ordered lomo saltado. Our server gave us a jar of green salsa and a jar of red pepper chill oil. We were told that the meat was filet mignon. The meat was very tender and was not chewy at all! Flavor was amazing and was not too salty! We were also introduced a Peruvian ice-cream. The texture of the ice-cream is very light and creamy, and it was not too sweet! It has a very fruity flavor. We had a great experience here and will come back again.

Google
My car managed to overheat just outside their place. I’m grateful to them for generously providing a couple of gallons of water, which was a thoughtful touch. This turned out to be an unexpected yet delightful discovery. Despite the heavy rain, the genuine warmth and hospitality of the place stood out immediately. The food was excellent—far better than I’d expect from a spontaneous stop like this. I don’t usually make random pit stops for meals, but this is one I’d gladly recommend to anyone visiting the city.

Google
The tacos and seafood soup were both great — super fresh ingredients, friendly service, and very reasonable prices.

Google
Nothing like sitting outside in DTLA having a Peruvian dish of your choice and this place makes its happen clean place the best food Mexican and Peruvian the ceviche was great and the Saltados have won them the award for best in L.A. It is a must try.

Google
Absolutely loved my experience at Mex Perú Gipsy! I had a chicken dish with rice, mushrooms, and vegetables, and it was incredible—the chicken was perfectly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Every bite felt like comfort food with a gourmet twist. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the staff were super friendly and attentive from start to finish. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes—this place is a gem!

Google
The Lomo Saltado is flavorful and is reasonably priced. So often when ordering this dish, is the steak too thin and overcooked; so the thickness and doneness over here is a refreshing treat. My only gripe would be a relative lack of fries. The atmosphere is cozy and unassuming, with friendly staff and a comprehensive menu (in which most dishes appear to be a bit pricey)

Google
Mex Peru Gipsy is more than a restaurant—it’s a true culinary journey. From the first bite, the flavors transport you, blending the richness of Mexican tradition with the boldness of Peruvian cuisine in a way that feels both authentic and exciting. What makes the experience truly exceptional is Juan, the owner. His warmth, attention to detail, and passion for sharing his culture turn a simple meal into something unforgettable. You don’t just eat here—you feel welcomed, celebrated, and cared for. A rare gem that leaves you wanting to return again and again.

Yelp
Amazing food!!! Both Peruvian and Mexican options. The Lomo was very good, only the second time I've ever had it (this one was the best!). The meat was perfectly done and juicy. Sauces that went with it were so delicious too. The tacos were unbelievable, the best I've ever had in my life. I got the al pastor and the flavor was unreal. My wife got carnitas tacos, I tried one and they were just as good! The people that work there are so friendly and kind. We got to speak to the owner for a while, really great person. They have a counter inside to sit at if you want, but I liked sitting outside on their patio and enjoying the people and lovely weather. I felt so lucky to have found Mex Peru! We could've ended up anywhere in Los Angeles and we found the best spot on our first try :) Next time we are in LA we will definitely be back.

Yelp
Juan & team, Congrats on 40 years of awesomeness! Thank you for the good chat and for the best street tacos I've ever had in my LIFE. This is the best way to end a trip to LA. I love the counter seating and hustling bustling setting. The lomo saltado is their most popular dish, but don't sleep on the street tacos. The carnitas and al pastor are otherworldly! No wonder they're the #4 place to eat in LA. A must visit, for sure.

Yelp
Amazing lomos saltado. The best. The flavors, the steak. Just a whole lot of yum. It feels authentic, the staff friendly. It's quick. One of my fav lunch spots

Yelp
Food: pescado con marisco, 9.9/10 Service: excellent (10/10) Ambiance: chill Clean: 10/10 The food here was exquisite. The ají verde, which is the Peruvian salsa verde was just out of this world. So freaking good. Now I see why this place is high rated on yelp. Amazing staff and amazing food.

Yelp
No frills ambiance but don't let that fool you - the food here is amazing! Everything is cooked in front of you and it's all freshly made. It's an amazing experience with even better food. Wait isn't too long and the servers and chefs are super nice. Ceviche de pescado was pretty good, a little more sour than what I'm used to, but nice and refreshing. The lomo saltado was seasoned and cooked so perfectly I highly recommend. Tallarines verdes was also pretty good. The chili oil they have is amazing. I wish it was spicier but the flavor is really good. Definitely recommend trying this place!

Yelp
Really great spot - I loved it. I loved the bar seating. I loved the cooks in action and servicing the counter seating. It reminded me of a restaurant/cafe I would dine in, in Lima, Peru. I was so excited to see they serve papa a la huancaína! I had that for the first time, in Peru, and I fell in love. Theirs was pretty good and it quenched my nostalgia. Their ceviche de pescado was great. I loved they use bass. The leche de trigre was potent and rich. The leche was orange-ish color instead of classic white. I also tried their lomo saltado. I'm unsure if they chop their own French fries, but they fry them fresh made for order. The meat was tender. The salsa was 7/10. I prefer mine with stronger flavors, for example more soy sauce, or ginger. It was good, I'm just into really potent salsa flavors. The rice it came with was very good with delicious texture and flavor. One thing I'll note is it is a little pricy. The lomo being about $20. The ceviche was also about $20. That's ... reasonable I'll say. However, I was a bit shocked to see the papa was $16 as it's literally a boiled potato with salsa on it. I've looked up how to make the salsa and I can't justify $16 but it was tasty and it did make me happy. The service was great. I had a lovely time having a little Peruvian meal in the middle of busy LA. Over all experience was wonderful and I do intend to return some day.

Yelp
Came in for my 2nd time today. I happen to be in the neighborhood buying my wedding dress and I knew there was a Peruvian place I had been to before, and it was just down the street! Last time I had ordered the ceviche and ordered my friends the lomo saltado.. and boy was I jealous of them! So this time around I ordered the Lomo Saltado for myself and my friend (who was babysitting for me at home) The customer service in this little shop is incredible! You are greeted with enthusiasm and they help you pick the right dish.. but I knew what I wanted. I took it to go and rushed back to my place. Big pieces of beef and onions with the rice.. so good! My friend loved it too. Will definitely be back when I am craving Peruvian food again.

Yelp
Mex Peru Gipsy is a little slice of Peru in LA. We enjoyed the Papa la huancaina and lomo saltodo with chi cha morado and would recommend it all. The delightfully creamy sauce of the papa la huancaina was unforgettable and was rivaled only by the tender and flavorful meat of the lomo saltodo. The excellent dishes were complimented by the warm and attentive service provided by the chef and owner. I can't wait to come again!

Danial L.

Yelp
You won't need to ask for Juan, you will know who he is! Great service and cozy road side restaurant. Had the lomo saltado and ceviche. Both had a deep and delicious flavor - top it with their home made hot sauce (almost like Szechuan style) and you won't take any breaks for eating. Lucky to have stumbled upon this gem!

Yelp
The most authentic and well prepared Lomo Saltado I've eaten. Followed a Yelp lead and was not disappointed. There was a group of seven of us and we all really enjoyed our meals. The location is in a busy shopping area which makes it a prime spot to stop for a bite! The staff was beyond pleasant and took the time to make us feel welcome. I will be returning!

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Recommended the Ceviche Mixto, Tallarines Verdes, and Lomo Saltado. Everything is good!
google avatar

Evangeline C.

Yelp
This Peruvian restaurant is the tastiest in town, with the Lomo saltado just like the one I had all over Peru. Very happy to have found this place, though the price is high for small portions. Service is great and fast.

Yelp
Move over, Mario's. I just found my new favorite Peruvian spot. Mex Peru Gipsy is, as the name suggests, a restaurant serving both Mexican and Peruvian food. As they hand you the menu, they will say their popular line, "Mexican on one side, Peruvian on the back". I went with some of the popular items recommended by the chef: the staple Lomo Saltado, ceviche de pescado, and tallarines saltados. I loved that the chef makes the food right in front of you if you sit at the counter, and you can watch all the fire action while he does his thing. The food comes out fairly quickly. I have to say the star of the show was definitely the lomo saltado. The meat was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The ceviche had a good amount of fish, and the tallarines was also very well seasoned. The green sauce that came on the side had a nice kick, and I liked to coat my rice with it. As we were finishing up our meal, the owner was nice enough to come out and check in on us. The service and quality of the food are great here. There was no wait when I went on a Sunday for lunch!

Yelp
Lomo saltado was really good! Nice little spot that has been here over 40 years through so much history. The owner was so nice and came out to greet us and was very welcoming and friendly. He also offered us to try their taco meat mix. Definitely recommend hitting up this spot if you're in the area!

Yelp
I was in the area and was excited to find this place nearby in my bookmarks. The staff is really nice and welcoming. I ordered the lomo saltado and tallarin saltado. They were both good, but I was a little disappointed with the meat. The meat lacked seasoning and wasn't great if I didn't get a bite with the other ingredients.

Yelp
Este restaurante siempre me deja contento con su comida y siempre regreso :) volveré otra vez:)

Yelp
menudo and the service was amazing and the cook was on it really recommend everyone to try

Jack G.

Yelp
Amazing food and great ambience. This place oozes authentic Peruvian and Mexican food! You can really feel the love and effort that they put into every meal. After eating here it showed me that the fact they've been opened for 34 years isn't because of luck but because of its amazing food and great service. The only complaint i would have was the wait time for the food but that's just me being picky. Great things come to those who wait after all!
google avatar

Allie P.

Yelp
Mex Peru Gipsy has the best Peruvian food I've ever had! The owner Juan is so kind and offers warm and friendly service and recommendations. We ordered the lomo saltado and chaufa and it was incredible. We can't wait to bring friends back!

Yelp
Was craving peruvian food and decided to check this place out on a Friday afternoon for dinner. It is located in the fashion district so parking shouldn't be much of an issue when all the stores are closed. This is a tiny place with a few seats located inside and also 3 tables outside. I decided to sit outside since the weather was nice and cool. The menu has 2 sides - one side for Mexican and the other side for Peruvian. I ordered off the Peruvian side and got the Lomo Saltado, ceviche mixto, inca cola, and the passion fruit drink. Give them a few minutes and they'll serve the food to your table. The food was delicious! Beef in the Lomo saltado was juicy and tender and the ceviche mixto was fresh. The passion fruit drink was tasty as well. The manager came by to check on us and gave this tip: you can request how you want the beef cooked in the Lomo saltado! I will definitely come back again to try the other foods on the menu. Everything was so delicious.. it's one of the best Peruvian food I've ever had!

Yelp
We ordered the ceviche mixto and lomo saltado and both were absolutely amazing. The ceviche tasted so fresh. The owner, Juan, was so nice and welcoming. We loved hearing his stories. He even helped us to park in the front of the restaurant. The service and food was top notch! We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the lomo saltado and the excellent service. LA staple since 1982, I couldn't recommend more.
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
i'm not peruvian and i don't have a dad, but this was like a homemade meal. genuinely so good. Now, if anyone tells you that the "ambiance" is nice, well that's just a bold face lie. It's in the hustle and bustle of the fashion district, but if you're like the ladies that sat next me and said "wow, it's just... REAL" then you'll enjoy the small little place. A genuine gem and not at all fancy. Good size portions for the price.
google avatar

Tuan N.

Yelp
Fantastic food, had the lomo saltado and the tacos de lengua. Great service, intimate space
google avatar

Yelp
We moved to Miami two years ago and eat lomo saltado all the time, but we always say how much we miss Mex Peru's lomo saltado! There's something about it that just hits different. Maybe it's how I can have an horchata and frijoles with my Peruvian food or maybe it's because the meat is always so tender or maybe it's because of the hole-in-the-wall vibe and amazing service. Safe to say anytime we come home to LA this place is on our list. We order: lomo saltado con huevos, frijoles con cotija, y plátanos con crema. Soooo good!! (& we were too excited for our food I forgot to take photos!)
google avatar

R C.

Yelp
Amazing Lomo Saltado. Delicious, best I've had. Good quality meat. Hole in the wall type place but clean. Juan is super nice. Ask for the house made hot sauce, great flavor
google avatar

Orlaine W.

Yelp
Food was delicious and comforting. I loved their lomo saltado. It's a small spot with very little seating, but the food and service is bigger and any large restaurant. The owner is wonderful and loves what he does. He should be proud of all the restaurant has endured. What a little gem.
google avatar

Mayi B.

Yelp
Grabbed lunch with a friend at this laid-back spot - not exactly fancy, but the food was surprisingly good! The ceviche was delicious, and the green spaghetti with meat very tasty. The owner was present, he was very friendly. The price for each dish $22.99 and the portions were normal not too much, not too little. Overall, a solid choice for a casual and satisfying meal.

Jimmy C.

Yelp
As a Peruvian, 100% recommend!!! My wife (Mexican) 100% recommends! Let me say that there is a reason why this place is highly recommended. For it being Peruvian/Mexican, the food was Amazing. Ambience was great! They had salsa playing in side. Also met the honor who is a super cool guy! Service was amazing, server was great and attentive. Even the chefs! Me (Peruvian): got a jalea which was delicious and fresh! 10/10 recommend! My wife (Mexican) got tacos and she was absolutely in love (especially after adding the Peruvian green salsa onto them) We got chicha which was super good and fresh, my wife got horchata which she loved. All in all, 1,000% recommend!!!

Daysi A.

Yelp
This is a must place to eat when ever I'm in Downtown LA. Felipe & Pablo are the dynamic duo that will prepare your meal as you enjoy your drink. They will also interact with you & make you feel welcome!
google avatar

Yelp
My dad has been bringing me here since I was a kid 20 years ago and now I come myself whenever I have some free time during lunch. The owner Juan always has a smile on his face and expresses his gratitude for returning customers. My usual order: Quesadilla Abraham (named after my dad) it's a chicken quesadilla with mushrooms and onions. 20 years later still tastes amazing. I ate it quick but next time I stop by I'll add a picture
google avatar

Yelp
It is one of my best experiences to date 10/21/23. The entire staff at this establishment are just respectable angels and I adore them for it! They were so welcoming and made me feel like I had known them for years. The food was amazing, it's true! I had the ceviche de pescado and the lomo saltado, both were made to perfection. I couldn't be happier with the outcome and the owner deserves all the good things said about his wonderful food. May they continue to prosper, thank you for having us! I did meter parking and it was easy to walk down the street to the place.

Hi I.

Yelp
The chicken soup is amazing I strongly recommend everyone to try it. Top notch quality that u can't nowhere else period
google avatar

Uviha P.

Yelp
Food os yummy, affordable and personnel is atentive, only down side is not many street parking spots available. However, food is worth it if you are in downtown!
google avatar

Danny M.

Yelp
Best Lomo Saltado I've had so far. Meat was tender, and the sauce-flavor was just right. The sauce is especially good being absorbed into the rice. Xcllnt.
google avatar

Marius V.

Yelp
i love this place - always a warm welcome and fantastic food - always makes me feel like i'm on vacation :)
google avatar

Yelp
This is a must-try when in the LA fashion district!!! The Lomo Saltado was the BEST I've had ever! Better than Limon in the Bay Area. 10 out of 10 recommend!
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem ... the food is so amazing we got ceviche mixto, original limo Salgado and caldo de pollo ... everything was so amazing .. we drove an hour and half and it was worth it
google avatar

Julien R.

Yelp
Great restaurant amazing food and people. ordered multiple dishes and all were extremely good. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Lily K.

Yelp
The portions were really small and the food was just okay. If you've never had Peruvian food before this place may be an eye opener but as a Peruvian food lover and a person who recently just got back from Peru I was super disappointed. I ordered the lomo Saltado and the mixto ceviche and extra green sauce which was +$1. The lomo saltado lacked flavor and the small amount beef was over well done/crispy burnt. It wasn't enough food for me (one person).
google avatar

Ray J N.

Yelp
Food is 5 stars, a little oily for lomo saltado but it was very tasty and tender. Tiny seating bar area and it does look run down, but it does have a A rating. I think $20 for lomo saltado is a bit expensive for this sketchy area and it wasn't a huge plate but good size. Friendly staff too with good service .
google avatar

Mariana C.

Yelp
Coming from a girl who was born in Peru and adores her mom and grandma's cooking, I have to say this competes with the homemade flavor. I fell in love with the food AND the service! We ordered the Lomo Saltado and Ceviche, and both were delicious - some of the best I've had in LA! The service was my absolute favorite part. The owner, Juan, was so attentive and dedicated to making our experience fantastic. He came out multiple times to make sure we were taken care of and we had such great conversations about our culture. I will definitely be coming back!!
google avatar

Victor R.

Yelp
Excellent Lomo saltado and ceviche! I look forward to my next visit to this amazing hole in the wall!!!
google avatar

Precious C.

Yelp
Small place, HUGE flavor. The food and ingredients are prime! I have not eaten Peruvian or Gypsy style food so I went with the carne asada plate. EXCELLENT choice!! The meat was so tender it almost melted in my mouth. The beans and rice were just as tasty. If you are shopping in the area, stop by! There are limited seat outside and bar seating inside is tight but with a stop.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
If you want to be in Peru - come here. This is it. Period. Sure, Mario's is next to Paramount studios but this is authenticity in the heart of the fashion district. This is the true feeling of being Peruvian with the love and cooking from Chef Felipe de Michoacán, Mexico. The owner, Juan from Lima and the sierra of Perú, will gladly tell you about the 40 year history. Ceviche and aguadito de pollo is all you need to certify the authenticity.
google avatar

Roxie G.

Yelp
Delicious food excellent service we love this place and the staff treats you like family 15 stars if possible

Adnan A.

Yelp
This place was an awesome hole in the wall located in the heart of DTLA. Really had the mom and pop feel to it. This is what we ordered: Lomo Saltado - Cooked perfectly, the steak was very juicy and the fries were crispy! Ceviche- Pretty good ceviche, the fish was fresh and overall not too salty. Street Tacos = These were just ok nothing special. And don't forget the Inka Cola! Will definitely come back again!
google avatar

Erica P.

Yelp
The food at Mex Peru Gipsy is amazing! I love Peruvian food and have been to quite a few different places but this one is by far the best. The owner is also so friendly and makes you feel at home.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Let me start with customer service, as soon as I called I felt the great hospitality. Felt like a cozy mom pop tradition Peruvian place I can enjoy lunch at. I had the best limo saltado, best ceviche mixto, and the best papa forgot the name.

Vanesa A.

Yelp
Let me start off by advising not to be fooled with the outward appearance. This place is a true gem! My family and I happened to park in the parking garage right next to the restaurant and decided to check it out. My husband is Peruvian and I am Mexican so we were a little skeptical at first. It's hard to find a fusion cuisine that makes both types of cuisine taste truly authentic. But let me tell you that the food was absolutely delicious! My husband ordered the Jalea and I ordered steak tacos. The jalea was amazing and the tacos were so tender and flavorful that I had to order a few more! I added the aji verde on my tacos and it truly just made it that much better! My son also loved the tacos and the chicha. The service was impeccable. They were all extremely attentive and friendly. The owner also came out to greet us and we were so impressed with the overall experience that we're already making plans to go back!
