Yelp
Mexcal is a clean restaurant and has good menudo.
I watched the lady turn on the OPEN sign right at 8am. I was their first customer of the day. I sat down but this is the type of place where you order at the counter from the board.
it was early so I focused on the egg dishes, but could not resist and ordered the menudo con pata.
I observed the two ladies moving around setting things up. I imagined they were related, a mom and her daughter busy and working as a team. A few minutes later, a man walked in and the younger lady asked if he wanted his menudo. He said, '?si, como, no?' then went around the counter and turned on the TV. The older lady brought him coffee, and before he could finish asking, she brought his chips - no salsa. I was encouraged we placed the same order, and happy to see a regular get good service. He sat facing away from the TV, drinking coffee and eating chips.
The salsa was like my moms. Dark green, made with roast tomato, jalapeño, cilantro and onion. Sadly, the coffee was not good, the brew was too light. The menudo arrived piping hot and the first spoon was full of flavor, the broth was thin but seasoned well. The tortillas were soft and thick.
At about 8:30, an Asian guy walked in and ordered a breakfast taco. The older lady, not fluent in English, said they don't have those. Futilely, the two went back and forth, and he ended up with a chorizo breakfast burrito - intentionally with no rice, no chips, and no bag.
I judge a menudo on a few things - some of the less obvious are the amount of time I take eating it and the number of napkins I end up using. This bowl exceeded most expectations, except I did not find any tendon in the serving.
I was happy with the visit and would come and order menudo again. I liked sitting back, the regular, as he finished his bowl, removing his glasses, and wiping his forehead. He must have enjoyed it, too.
