Mexcal Taqueria - Review - Menlo Park - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"A quick, cheap lunch is not easy to come by in Menlo Park. But at Mexcal Taqueria, the $2.75 tacos are so good, you’d happily pay double for them. The carnitas are rich and tender with crisp edges, the al pastor offers a flavorful, slightly sweet kick, and everything lands on housemade tortillas that are soft and warm, with just the right amount of chew. The chile verde is a sleeper hit—slow-cooked pork in a tangy green sauce that’s pure comfort—and don’t skip the salsa bar, especially the bright, punchy green salsa you’ll wish you could buy by the quart." - Gabi Moskowitz

Google
Down-to-earth taqueria with all the standard offerings. I was a big fan of their house made salsa — had a great spice level to it. Can’t go wrong with this place.

Went there with my family to get burritos, we were Four. The two lady’s were just sitting at the table watching YouTube videos and looked bothered for us walking in. We ordered Four Burritos and Four large drinks and they charged us $83 and we had to ask for salsas and the waiter only gave us two small salsas for all four of us. The steak in the burrito was good but not THAT good.

March 2025: I used to frequent this place in 2017 (when my office was nearby.) The only thing that's changed since then is the prices (but it's the same everywhere, way up.) But the quality of food and service are still excellent. In the last few years, I've been to a lot of Mexican places near my home in Santa Clara, in search of "my comfort food". But most don't have good Enchiladas, or don't give chips & salsa, or they whine about giving you extra salsa or chips or just refuse). This place hasn't changed a bit in this regard. Warm smiles greeted us, the English-speaking woman came out to assist us when we needed help ordering, they asked us to be seated and brought out the chips & salsa (which they gladly replenished for me as I devoured it). Great spicy & super tasty salsa. Enchiladas Vere had 4 enchiladas - with 3 kinds of meat options (I got two steak, pork, and chicken). All were freshly made. The plate came with avocados in the salad, and fresh beans & rice. Amazing that 8 years later, and the quality of food and service is still the same! Loved coming here today. (Only the prices are steep - but that's true for every other place. So not sure what they or I can do about it.)

The food is delicious. Very flavourful and the salsa is spicy.

Google
It's one of the best Mexican food restaurants in the area. They offer many home style cooked meals, but I usually go on the weekends to eat their beef barbacoa. They serve it in tacos or as a stew in a bowl to which you can add the salsa, onion, cilantro and lime. In addition they provide hand made tortillas which is the best way to have it. With great service and ambiance it no wonder people keep coming back for more.

Google
Great place for this excellent Mexican food at an affordable place, the cook is preparing fresh tortillas and this makes the difference!

Google
A small, cozy restaurant. We were returning from Yosemite and were really hungry. We were in the mood for Mexican food and found Mexcal on Google. We were not disappointed at all. Everything from the location, staff, menu and ambience looked authentic. Since the menu didn't have a description of the dishes, we were searching on Google to understand what they are. I ate the Chili Verde (and, I highly recommend it!) which is one of the top dishes of this restaurant. I loved it! It was delicious. The pork curry had the right amount of tanginess (I usually don't like really tangy food) and everything else on the plate complemented it perfectly. The Indian in me was happy to eat this dish. The rice portion is small so I ordered extra. Sadly, I couldn't finish the pork curry as I was full by then. But, if I'm ever in this part of the world again, I'll definitely eat here. The servers were patient and welcoming. 5 stars for the food and the service.

Yelp
Was in the area so we decided to try some Mexican food, after a little yelping and driving we stumbled on this place. Place is a little small and unassuming from the street but the appeal for me was the $2.75 tacos in this economy? As for the tacos, great taste and value overall! They give a pretty generous portion size for their meat in the tacos. I asked for fish tacos, but the lady said they only do fish and shrimp tacos for 6.99? My favorite of the 3 tacos I had was the al pastor, wish it had a little pineapple on top with it. Carnitas were good, but not as flavorful and the lengua was pretty tender as one would hope 4/5* We also ordered the bisteck ranchero and it was a bit lack luster portion size was a lot smaller than what I'm used to and it was soaked in a red tomato sauce. Unfortunately this dish was a miss and underwhelming 2/5* Chips and salsa are refillable upon request too. The women who were working here were very nice as well! Salsa is on the medium/spicy side I'm giving this place 4 stars because of how happy I was with the tacos, please don't change those! Except maybe a little pineapple on the al pastor please! If you're hungry and want something flavorful and filling I would 100% stick to the tacos here

Yelp
I chose to go to Mexcal Taqueria today for the first time, based on Yelp's high ratings. From those reviews, I learned that women are running the restaurant. I really wanted to like and support Mexical. But it was just OK... Pros: - nice people (Someone mentioned on the Yelp review that they are non-English speakers, but the woman at the cashier speaks English.) - Parking is easy on the street - Must be authentic. All the customers in the restaurants are Spanish-speaking people. Cons: - They charge extra for using the credit card. I wish I had been informed when I asked if I could use the credit card... - It took about 30 minutes to make 4 Brritos (The restaurant was not crowded then.) - I only got two little bags of chips for 4 Brritos... Maybe she forgot to put 2 more in... - Brritos are on the small size for Super Brritos. And those are kind of dry. - 2 of the orders were Shrimp Super Brritos, but she asked me if I wanted them fajita style, and I wanted to try. But then, it came out as no "super" burritos (no guac, sour cream, or cheese, and dry), although I was charged for "super." I wish she had told me that by making those Burritos "fajita style," it wouldn't be "super" anymore.

Yelp
This place can cure what ails you! Had a great breakfast at this place. Killer Micheladas to cure any hangover, paired with chips, great salsa (LOVED the green one), and a side of beans. The breakfast burrito was full of beans, rice, eggs, chorizo, cheese. The huevos rancheros (eggs on a crisp tortilla and covered in sauce) came with the best homemade tortillas. The carnitas and chicken street tacos were full of meat. The service was great and the coffee strong . Great little find!

Yelp
This is my second time eating at this fantastic taqueria but finally writing a review. Got the carne asada Sopes and Chiliquiles with green sauce. I got hooked on chiliquiles in Mexico and am always trying to find a good one here. These were really good and even had a chance to snap pictures of them being made in the kitchen. Chiliquiles are fried tortilla chips with scrambled eggs and either green or red Sauce mixed in. Was here at 1:30pm on a Sunday and it was really busy (good sign!). The service is really pleasant. The English spoken is broken but a smile and some pointing gets the job done as in most taquerias. Highly recommend this place for a full service Mexican option.

Robert F.

Yelp
I hate giving a 3 star review, but the kitchen staff is very unorganized. I felt bad for the only front staff person trying to do everything. I saw people walking out because groups coming in after we're getting their food way before them. Our order was delivered at different times and the quesadilla and atole when we were almost done with our menudo. Can't say it was a great experience, but the food was not bad.

Yelp
Wow! What a good find!! The chorizo breakfast burrito was like a firework show of flavors in my mouth. Delicious to say the least. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying out some other stuff. I was the only one there and it took about 5 mins. Made fresh on the spot. To top it off the lady was nice, which stands out because it's hard to find good customer service these days.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious and the service and hospitality is outstanding. I will be coming back again and again and again and....

Yelp
I came to this restaurant because of the high reviews which I think are unwarranted. I think this is the case for different restaurants I've tried in this neighborhood on Middlefield in Menlo Park. Decor was not that nice. Chips were stale and salsa was basically like a bland cheap Herdez from the store. Chilaquiles tasted exactly like the picture looks like. It was OK, but not great. Horchata was below average ... kind of grainy and watery. I don't care much about service ... it was OK, but not much to talk about.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Short wait on a Monday lunch. There's a small parking lot next to the store which is very convenient. I ordered a super burrito with carne asada. It was pretty good, but wish it came with pico de gallo inside. It did come with a side salsa but would've preferred pico de gallo inside the burrito. Employees were very nice and friendly! I'd come again if I return to the area - would love to try their tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
The worker hardly spoke English so it was challenging to order. Then it took what felt like forever to get my order. Was only two burritos but took 15 minutes and we were the only ones in store. I'd recommend going to Cuco's burritos rather than here.
google avatar

Eduardo G.

Yelp
The food is very good flavor and fresh. Corn tortillas do it at the moment . The service is very good too
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
Yeah I'm gonna chime in here as well - the food is exceptionally good. The chilaquiles were probably the best I've ever had. Everything is incredibly fresh - and the homemade tortillas were amazing. They don't speak any English - but go in with a positive attitude and you'll be rewarded.

Yelp
Good food and good people!! A whole in the wall if you will. Great place to have a yummy affordable meal! Plates start at 12$! Tacos were amazing. Ta buenoooo y la gente muy buenaa :)

Yelp
Home made tortillas. Why would I comment anything else? But I will. I feel very lucky and full of gratitude to be in the presence of such lovely, hard working women.
google avatar

Yelp
I was very happy with these Birria Tacos. The meat was tender, generous portions, big taco, and the soup on the side to dip the tacos in we're the best part. So much flavor! Tip: they have patio seating so you can dine out.

Yelp
Everyone in the home was craving breakfast burritos this morning. We wanted something authentic. My husband did a quick Yelp search and we decided on Mexcal. It was delicious! Only downside is there isn't really any substitutions and the chorizo was a bit too spicy for our toddlers. Had a real kick to it. Otherwise amazing!!
google avatar

Mona A.

Yelp
I don't really understand the fuss about this place the food was okay, nothing crazy or special. I ran across this place because of the raving reviews about their burritos but I have to be honest I was a bit disappointed. This is definitely a whole in the wall type of place and I thought that means deliciousness, but it was okay. Although I am a sucker for good burritos so I always look for the best places! Tried their carna asada. Their salsa is good though!
google avatar

Sterling H.

Yelp
Really happy we tried this little hole in the wall. Parking in the lot next door is pretty tight. The cute ladies running everything were very friendly with excellent service. The sopes (both chicken and carne asada) were delicious. The homemade tortillas shone through on the tacos. The red salsa on the tacos was pretty hot though. The burrito was good but nothing exceptional. Also chips and salsa come with your meal which is always a plus for me. Only disappointing thing was the horchata chalky and underwhelming.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here for a birthday dinner, our first time here, after finding a midpoint to meet and eat between LA and Ventura. The place was packed, but our service remained top rate and fun-loving. The bowls of homemade guacamole to start were a great indicator of the food to come! We decided to order the large bowl of Pasole and share it, and it went fast! Then, Everyone's food came out correct, and hot, and wonderful ... lots of empty plates. Next time I'm back in Agora Hills, I'm going back!

Yelp
Really delicious burritos! Summary: Unfortunately the photos on here are pretty old and it's kind of hard to find their pricing for them. It's a little bit pricier than some of the other places nearby, but the food is really good and really filling! The people working at the front are really nice. They actually answer the phone in Spanish so it feels almost like you're in Mexico hah. Food + pricing: We got the super veggie, the super pollo asado (chicken), and two super camarones (shrimp). The total was $52.40 which is a bit more than our regular spots but the food was really tasty and their sauces were great. The burritos tasted really authentic- I really miss eating food in Mexico. Parking + outdoors: They also have a parking lot that you can turn into right next to the store, they also have outdoor dining area, but it's closed off right now during Covid. Covid + spacing: They have a lot of good signs outside about social distancing and how to wear your mask properly... but there was another customer wearing their mask on their chin (obviously ineffective) while talking on the phone inside the store... kind of disappointing and they didn't ask him to put his mask on.

Yelp
This spot is our go-to taqueria. Run by some lovely ladies, it feels like home. Tacos are excellent. We always get takeout, but their tables are very welcoming. Patio if you want to eat there.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place, in an out of the way Mexican quarter surrounded by other businesses, it seemed like the real deal. The two women were super sweet, and there were two locals sitting and eating, what was not to like. I got a veggie burrito, no frills--rice, beans, cheese, salsa, sour cream on a simple floor tortilla. It was edible, but not much more than that. I barely had a few bites and called it a day. There was nothing objectively wrong with it per se, but in the Bay Area with so many taquerias around and with that many burritos, this was hardly a star. Everything about it was lackluster, the spark and freshness absent. The interior is cute, if a bit divey, with colorful wall murals, and despite that it was relatively late in the evening on a Sunday, the service was terrific.
google avatar

Allegra H.

Yelp
Best burrito I've ever had. I got a burrito Al pastor. Jamaica drink was refreshing as well and the servers were lovely. Felt like I'd taken a trip to Mexico. Will make a trip to come here again next time I'm on the peninsula.

Yelp
Such an awesome spot!!! I absolutely loved this taqueria. Went in really craving some good tacos and that's exactly what I got. Everyone was really friendly and we got our tacos super fast. The complementary chips and salsa were really good as well. We ordered a total of five tacos, two chorizo, two carnitas, and one al pastor. The highlights were definitely the carnitas and the chorizo tacos. I don't think I've ever had such great carnitas tacos outside of Mexico ever. The meat was super well seasoned and tasty throughout, just like the chorizo. The tortillas were also tasty and overall the tacos hit all the right spots. Definitely recommend!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is the spot. The "Go to" spot for fantastic, legit, Mexican food. Atmo as well - It's like being in Mexico. As far as I can tell, the chef is always the same, and it seems to be her own restaurant - she is skilled, and prepares the food like it's going to be eaten by family. If you are in the area, pop in for the real thing. So good.

Yelp
Mexcal is a clean restaurant and has good menudo. I watched the lady turn on the OPEN sign right at 8am. I was their first customer of the day. I sat down but this is the type of place where you order at the counter from the board. it was early so I focused on the egg dishes, but could not resist and ordered the menudo con pata. I observed the two ladies moving around setting things up. I imagined they were related, a mom and her daughter busy and working as a team. A few minutes later, a man walked in and the younger lady asked if he wanted his menudo. He said, '?si, como, no?' then went around the counter and turned on the TV. The older lady brought him coffee, and before he could finish asking, she brought his chips - no salsa. I was encouraged we placed the same order, and happy to see a regular get good service. He sat facing away from the TV, drinking coffee and eating chips. The salsa was like my moms. Dark green, made with roast tomato, jalapeño, cilantro and onion. Sadly, the coffee was not good, the brew was too light. The menudo arrived piping hot and the first spoon was full of flavor, the broth was thin but seasoned well. The tortillas were soft and thick. At about 8:30, an Asian guy walked in and ordered a breakfast taco. The older lady, not fluent in English, said they don't have those. Futilely, the two went back and forth, and he ended up with a chorizo breakfast burrito - intentionally with no rice, no chips, and no bag. I judge a menudo on a few things - some of the less obvious are the amount of time I take eating it and the number of napkins I end up using. This bowl exceeded most expectations, except I did not find any tendon in the serving. I was happy with the visit and would come and order menudo again. I liked sitting back, the regular, as he finished his bowl, removing his glasses, and wiping his forehead. He must have enjoyed it, too.

Yelp
Ordered food for takeout yesterday and I really enjoyed it! The service was great. The girl I spoke to over the phone was very sweet! The food was ready pretty quickly and it arrived fresh. Lots of extra salsa and chips too! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for some yummy tacos and burritos!
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
The ladies here are real friendly... Don't miss the nachos and salsa. So they do a real good version of one of my favorite dishes, the carnitas quesadilla. The tacos are also decent, but there are better taquerias in the area to be honest. At least here you have a nice place to sit down and watch TV.
google avatar

Milenia R.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Service was friendly fast and attentive. The tortillas were freshly made and tasted great! Definitely recommend anyone looking for authentic Mexican food in the area.
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
Picked up a carne asada super burrito yesterday.. Just a quick walk from home. It was fantastic..!! Mucho grande with all the tasty ingredients ! Price was a little high at $13. Menu online says plain Super Burrito starts at $5.95
google avatar

Lupita R.

Yelp
This small restaurant is in an area where parking can be difficult to find. The fish taco is the only thing that I've tried, but it was pretty good. The taco had big pieces of fish, not diced, that were fresh. The fish had a nice char on the outside. I was surprised that I enjoyed them as much as I did. I will return and try again along with other items from the menu.

Yelp
Cold burrito no good tacos el grullense two or one block away is way better. never coming to this place again. I bring one friend from russia and what an embarrassment

Yelp
Had a delicious al pastor burrito after a student of mine recommended this place. Will definitely be returning soon!
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for true Mexican flavors, in every sense of the word, then this is the place! From fresh corn tortillas to intense spicy soups to fresh seafood to Spanish on TV to fellow customers, it's as authentic as it gets! It helps to speak a little Spanish there. And don't expect dirty cheap prices even in a humble looking place, those days are gone (at least from Menlo Park or anywhere Bay Area).

Yelp
Homemade tortillas, cheap tacos, excellent meat, good spice level, what more could you want from a hole in the wall taqueria? The pastor was BOMB. Carne asada was solid. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu out, especially the birria and barbacoa on the weekends.
google avatar

Alice C.

Yelp
Reading the reviews, I'm somehow convinced that people who think this is the best taqueria hasn't crossed the border into Redwood City, where there are many, many good taquerias. Or that I'm ordering the wrong things - but I consider tacos a staple. It's not that the food wasn't good - I had the tacos with carnitas and steak, and they were decent but I've had better in the area in terms of meat and salsa flavours. It's just that it's quite average, and made me miss my favourite taco truck. The mister got his chorizo con huevos, and he thought it was decent, but not something he needs to come back and get again and again. Food comes out really slowly, especially during lunch rush. You'll have to be patient!
google avatar

C M.

Yelp
Street/soft tacos, carne asada were great! We also enjoyed the meatless burrito! Thank you!
google avatar

Mister B.

Yelp
Lovely, very clean establishment. Good food. No real cream for coffee. :-( (just powered chemical creamer) yuck! might be a deal breaker as I like a good cup of coffee with breakfast. Ordered chorizo and eggs rice & beans, corn tortillas The tortillas were fresh home made. I was shocked that the kitchen doesn't have butter! I like butter on my hot tortillas like one puts butter on toast. No sugar free drinks. Nice family run restaurant. waitress is nice, but doesn't understand much English. I've had their flautas very good.
google avatar

Andrew F.

Yelp
In an attempt to try more taquerias in my immediate area, I decided to try Mexcal last night, and chose it based off of their decent ratings. I ordered a Pollo Asado Super Burrito (sans sour cream), and two tacos (1 pollo asado, 1 carne asada) The burrito was for me, and I was very disappointed in the lack of moisture and flavor of the chicken. The rice and guacamole was great, but the chicken was not. The burrito also had very little in the way of veggies. More onions, tomatoes and cilantro, please. I never order my burritos with sour cream, and I'd bet that's what they rely on for the moisture. The tacos were for my wife. She liked the carne asada, fresh corn tortillas, pico, and lime and radish garnish. She agreed that the pollo asado was dry and tasteless. Pros: Food was fresh and mostly tasty Guacamole was chunky and really good in the burrito Salsa was GREAT! Chips too Restaurant is clean Service was friendly and fast Prices are fair Cons: Pollo Asado was very dry and bland tasting Burrito was heavy on the rice. It should have more pico & veggies for balance Shouldn't have to rely on sour cream for burrito moisture Overall: 7 of 10 I'll probably give it another try to sample their other meats, but only after I try some other taquerias in the area.

Yelp
Ive come here twice and twice they are closed durring open hours. Lady said one of the people that works there isnt there so they wont open till the person gets there, theres like 3 people inside and cant run a restaurant cause one person is missing? Wasted my time twice not coming back. If you come here you might waste time too.

Yelp
Superman's X-Ray vision can't even pierce through this super burrito, it's too dense with perfection and deliciousness. The carnitas super burrito at Mexcal is the best burrito I've had in recent memory. It is stuffed to the brim with fresh ingredients and mouthwatering carnitas! My friends have also gotten the Carne Asada, and Pollo Asada which they say are fantastic. The prices are great, the service is better and the food is best. When Superman is done crime fighting I'm relatively certain he ends up in Mexcal. I know I would.

Yelp
RWC Taco Quest Stop #6 Tacos: $1.25each Seating: Yes Credit Cards Accepted Size: Small 2 tortillas Good for Groups: 4+ or more Parking: Street is your best bet. This joint is one of the more "fancier" joints on Middlefield. Such potential. Such nice digs. Such a let down. The meat. Well for starters, I know it's not fresh. I mean how else do the taco trucks get around. I knew that it probably sits in warming dishes all day, but dude, throw it on the grill before you serve it to me. The gal, who was super sweet, scooped up some meat threw it on the tortilla and BAM TACO. I like my meat hot by the grill, not by some lamp, you dig? Seasoning was okay..but nothing spectacular. Ambiance: Great set up. Great atmosphere. Great Service. Meat needs work.

Yelp
Dope spot - lovely ladies working there. Great food, big portion. Get the fish tacos & micheladas - thank me later

Yelp
Having found out initial place of lunch closed, we went in here. Small taqueria, small menu. Decided to do an assortment of tacos. They ran out of chorizo, and pastor. So i ended up with carnitas, asada and lengua. Good chips and salsa to start, solid tacos across the board. Place is super clean and has the obligatory soccer channel on tv. Hopefully next time i can get some of the carne selections i want.

Yelp
I am always on a quest for a great breakfast burrito with chorizo. This place is LEGIT. This is a large breakfast burrito stuffed to capacity. I couldn't finish this burrito and ate about half. With that being said it's stuffed with chorizo, beans and rice. I know no eggs (that's why I couldn't give it five). But nonetheless it's delicious and the chorizo was nicely cooked (I've been to places not so much...). We ate there and it's a fairly small place with seating for maybe 20 people. You're seated and they take your order. Service was fine and the food came out in a short time. They're other items on the menu (tacos and other burritos) and I would definitely try it again.
