What to Do Near Loren at Lady Bird in Downtown Austin - AFAR

"Founded in 1984 by local artists Sylvia Orozco, Sam Coronado, and Pio Pulido to showcase Mexican, Chicano, and Latino American art in Texas, this museum is one of the few in the country focused on Mexican art. Visitors can explore rotating exhibitions, browse works sold from the museum’s changarrito vending cart, and see regularly refreshed public murals (a mural program on Fifth Street and Congress Avenue changes every few months). Each November 1 the museum anchors the city’s largest and oldest Día de los Muertos parade, which marches down historic Sixth Street and concludes near the museum." - Mae Hamilton

Occupying a single floor, Mexic is small: a mere handful of rooms. Given that size, the $8 admission seems like a reach. Look past that, however, and Mexic offers unique art ranging from murals to photos to an elaborate room-sized nativity display. The gift shop is well worth a look as well. As museums go, Mexic-Arte’s size and scope are underwhelming. However, this place serves an important mission and gives you a chance to see art you probably won’t find elsewhere.

My partner and I were in Austin for a layover and saw that this museum was free on Sunday and I decided to go in. We loved it. It was very welcoming, the art was beautiful, it highlighted amazing Latinx artists, and has an amazing gift shop. Would definitely recommend visiting as it's an affordable cultural experience.

This time we went they were in the middle of staging a new gallery, so we mostly had access to just the store. They did have a TV playing slides of all the work and different displays they had set up over time, amazing work. I've been here several times. I can see there has been thought and intuition that goes into the way they build out their displays and make artist selections. This is not just a random gallery. There's a lot of heart and soul that goes into what they do here. The only way to understand it is to see it in person. They still had some cool little pieces to look at while the gallery was being updated. We bought some little gift store things we thought were cool. Staff is always 10/10

I visit Mexic-Arte museum every time I am in Austin! There is always an amazing exhibition on display. There is also a great gift shop!!Free on Sundays

Google
Tiny museum. Interesting art works but poor descriptions. The art was hung on the wall with a list of artists and their artwork on the side but you couldn’t tell which was which. The whole visit took us 20 min. If you’re in the area and have half an hour to spare, it’s worth it. Nice shop of the museum.

Google
The museum is closed, hence the 4 stars instead of 5, only the gift shop is open but they have some wonderful artwork, sculptures, jewelry and other things for sale. Picked up some gifts for my kids while in Austin for a conference. Beautiful work, thank you!

Google
It's very small, & not too much to see. However the staff is nice & it's good if you're passing the time.

Google
There is normally an admission fee, but we were able to get in free admission because of a concert they had. I would recommend signing up for their email newsletters to keep you in the loop about events there. The people upfront were super helpful and friendly. The space is filled with art from all over artisans in Mexico. Everything is on display and I would definitely recommend this for all tourist and locals to check out. The gift shop is a great place to go and grab a birthday card or a birthday gift, if you are a part of the Mexican culture, you will love this place. They had a Huapango concert, I mean, that is very unique!

Yelp
Nice little museum centrally located on the Main Street in downtown Austin off of Congress Ave. They had the Chenche exhibition going on and everything is self guided. Nice little store to buy some souvenirs that are bit on the pricey side. Which they're was more to see/do at this museum as the concept and name calls for a much developed focus of the Mexican culture to the masses.

Yelp
Small, but worthwhile. There's not too many places you can see art like this so go in. Gift shop is pricey, but they do have some smaller items you can get away with. It is free on Sundays.

Yelp
I'm so happy that I got to stop by this amazing museum. It might be just one floor, but there was so much to see all the beautiful are all the colors. I highly recommend everyone stopping by just to check out the exhibit plus they have a beautiful gift shop.

Yelp
I got in for free because they were hosting a special event where they were showcasing work submitted by local artists (some novice artists and some that were trained/well known in the area), and all the pieces were meant to tie in a theme. I believe the theme was Austin. All pieces were for sale, and prices were clearly listed. I had such a great time wandering around and checking them all out. One piece of art in particular caught my eye- it was a painting of chickenshit bingo, complete with what appeared to be some real chicken feathers. (I just hope that the splats on the painted bingo board were not actually poop-eh)! Their gift shop is cute, and I snagged myself a pair of socks. I think anyone visiting the area should check it out!

Yelp
This is a review of Mexic-Arte Museum's Annual Viva La Vida Festival - Austin's largest and longest-running Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event. It's a fun festival and a wonderful Dia De Los Muertos event here in Austin. Recommended for the whole family! I went to the festival and saw the grand procession for the first time last year and was really impressed with the giant papier-mâchés, costumes, and dances. This year is their 40th year. According to the their website: "Festival activities run until 6 p.m. There's an Education Pavilion with hands-on art activities and artist demos, traditional foods, local artists and retail booths, a low-rider exhibition, and live performances throughout the day."

Yelp
If you find yourself downtown Austin, you should definitely check out this museum. It is small and doesn't take long to go through. However, they have some great cultural contributions to our city. There is a wonderful gift shop as well. When they have art openings, they have fun music and drinks. I am a member and definitely encourage others to join and support this museum.

Yelp
I visited the museum briefly on a work trip to Austin last week. The museum is definitely small but has a unique collection and hosts interesting exhibitions. I enjoyed my visit and the exhibition open at the time of my visit: MX 21-Resistance, Reaffirmation & Resilience. Admission is free on Sundays, so that would be a great day to visit (but donate if you are able). And they do offer free tours that you can schedule on their website if you are interested (I didn't have time, sadly). It's an interesting museum to visit if you're in the downtown area.

Yelp
Sometimes I'm not the biggest fan of art museums, but sometimes the art is so cool that I can't help but want to hang it up in my apartment. The Mexi-Arte museum in Austin is a place full of extremely unique pieces that need to be seen. For $7 you get into this place and it should take about a half hour to look at all of the different art pieces and really take it all in. Once you are finished taking in all of the different exhibits you can pop into the gift shop at the front of the store and purchase anything from art to Lucha libre masks. Although I don't have a ton to say on yelp about this place, it's definitely a Cool museum and a place that's worth checking out.

Yelp
This museum was truly a unique experience. They have a lovely gift shop, which my husband and I purchased several cool trinkets from, and knowledgeable attendants who don't mind answering a question or two. The exhibit itself was wonderful, and extremely informative. The art they feature inside from local artists was wonderful as well! Such amazing talent and insight!

Robin A.

Yelp
Wonderful museum with art both inside and outside. The cultural perspective is worth your time and will not disappoint.

Yelp
Great place to take a date. Very interesting art and super friendly staff Loved the gift shop too Plus if you join the newsletter lots of fun events

Yelp
This was probably one of my favorite museums to go to while in Austin. We lucked out and it was free admission the day that we went. I believe that it was because it was mother's day weekend and they were having events to make crafts in the back thought it was free. Regardless of the price you should definitely make a trip here because the displays were amazing. there was a few different rooms that you could go through each of them showing beautiful art across the walls. Some of my favoritea were the drawings on the correctional postage letters and the wall size painting of a person. The staff was very nice and very informative about the the show that was going on. With all the bright colors and interesting art this was again, a must stop place in Austin. if you want to go to a museum this is the one that you should go to.

Yelp
This quaint little museum packs lots of cool and unique, eclectic exhibits and art pieces from local artists and Mexican artists. Since the wife and I went during October, Dia De Los Muertos theme was very prominent. There were authentic altars, great still photos depicting official Dia de Los Muertos scenes from Mexico and a big Jack Skelington type sculpture front and center. Equally as interesting are some of the thought provoking descriptions accompanying the pieces. It's a awesome spot to come with little ones and at $5 it's an affordable. Come check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a small but powerful museum. I visited on Sunday, which apparently is the free admission day. I went at four and it wasn't packed. I spent about 30-45 minutes there, taking time to read about the artists and the history. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. They also have a small gift shop at the entrance.

Yelp
Review during COVID. We're from Houston and we love going to Museums Too small for what you pay for. I was expecting more art to see There's also a couple of BLM art that wasn't necessary and could've been used for WHAT THIS MUSEUM IS DEDICATED TO: MEXICAN FOLK ART
google avatar

Vanessa K.

Yelp
The museum is nice even though it's tiny. Good way to spend an hour or so learning a bit more and enjoying art.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Such an unassuming museum due to the size, but the thought provoking and wide ranging type of art was amazing. I could have easily listened to an audio tour of dozens of pieces for a few hours, but alas... children.
google avatar

Leslie S.

Yelp
Pros: Fun and eclectic selection of art work. The shop had a lot of neat items. Cons: Tiny spot, but very well curated. Worth your time, worth the price!
google avatar

Yelp
A decent museum. Actually I was expecting a bit more.. Located on Congress Ave, was pretty small. They were showing photo art when I was there. It was not much but impressive.
google avatar

Yelp
Great museum. I think it cost $5 to get in with a student ID. Make sure to check the times they're open because they are wacky hours. The museum is small, 1 floor, but filled from floor to ceiling with collections. I loved it and would come back to see future exhibits. Very authentic Mexican and texan art from locals too. Don't forget to check out thr gift shop, otd awesome.

Yelp
Date of Visit: 09/24/19 We came on a Tuesday, late morning. Admission was about $7. We had the misfortune of arriving while some kids were on a field trip. Once the little rascals left it was much quieter. The museum is small as others have mentioned but it's no less worthy of a visit. It has a more intimate/personal feel not because of the size, per se, but because the exhibits feature a lot of individual people and their stories. It was a mixture of photos, paintings, 3D art installations, and videos. Definitely take the time to watch the videos if you can. One was about war and the other about immigration/detention centers. Overall, I'd recommend a visit if you're in Austin.

Yelp
This delightful art museum is small, but thoughtfully designed with great photographs, painting, and sculptures by Mexican and local artists. I liked reading the descriptions of various exhibits. If you are traveling through Austin, I think the gift shop is a superb place to find unique items (e.g,. Christmas tree ornaments) to bring home. If you're looking for a grand art museum with huge gallery spaces, this humble setting is definitely not the place for you. But if you enjoy high-quality photos as well as cultural history, prepare to be delighted!

Jenn D.

Yelp
This museum is a SCAM. I paid $11 for my partner (a teacher) and I to get into a room the size of your typical run of the mill gallery full of art made by kids. Half the gallery was closed, which the lady at the front desk chose not to tell us before paying, so the whole "museum" took less than five minutes to complete. If the money wasn't going towards a donation I would have asked for it back. I couldn't help but leaving feeling like I was played. Would have rather just donated instead of being fed the idea that I was going to a museum.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Another great museum on my trip to Texas. They had a few interesting exhibits going on, including showing the art that kids make during the state sponsored after school programs. Free on Sunday!
google avatar

Yelp
Best museum in Austin! Highly recommend it! Such a beautiful experience. Great place to reconnect with your roots.

Yelp
This museum on Congress Avenue downtown in Austin has a humble street entrance, but once you walk inside you know you are visiting a first class, professional art museum. The curatorial work at Mexic-Arte is exceptional. The exhibits and special lectures/symposia are of high caliber, and I always learn something new (I hold an M.A. in art history from UT Austin, and worked with the Legorreta Family on the museum expansion in Corpus Christi a few years ago, so I do know my art museums, smiles). My hope is that Mexic-Arte will eventually be able to raise the funding to convert the Congress Avenue facility into a larger, more modern museum similar to what The Contemporary has done on Congress Avenue. Mexic-Arte certainly merits that kind of expansion. Also, if you are looking for gifts or "Austin souvenirs," the gift shop here is amazing!
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Small museum on downtown Austin it was about $7 the entrance. The gift shop is amazing with great stuff. Don't plan of being here too long because it is very small. But a great museum indeed and would recommend it.

Julie A.

Yelp
It was a big deal for me to visit this museum while in my stay in Austin and I'm glad I did. It felt important, the works presented (at the time I went through was a time focused on transformation). The only thing I wish is that I could be around for their viva la vida festival but I saw something mentioning an online element and look forward to it. The museum is a bit small so it doesn't take too long to work your way through each piece but it's a nice day experience and their gift shop is precious with many unique offerings for keepsake memories.
google avatar

Immaculate I.

Yelp
It's a great museum but it looks much more like a gallery. The restrooms are way in the back past the food and behind the black curtains. Go with a friend, if you close the door, there's no knob on the other side. It cost $5 and showed that Sundays are free. There are a lot of moving pieces. There's multimedia, and I particularly enjoyed the Mona Lisa piece that replaced her nose with a phallus. The museum store has a lot of cute knick knacks that are for purchase. I liked the Mexican candy for 25 cents. If you have some time to kill and are low on cash, definitely visit. I'd return, they have different artists display their work periodically.
google avatar

Alyssa L.

Yelp
I came to the museum for the first time with my family! It was extremely educational with an interesting multimedia twist featuring current events. Parking is a cost, but that's the realities of parking downtown. The museum seema thoughtfully put together and is considerate of history and honoring culture.
google avatar

Wennie H.

Yelp
This is an incredible museum. We were leaving brunch and I saw a sign that said "free family Sunday" so I had to stop in. I'd passed this museum before when I was stumbling through 6th and completely forgot about wanting to check it out. Shame on me. The museum is inspiring and sad. A majority of the art is local and absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful. To know that so much of the country is founded on the labor of others and they still are treated as second hand citizens is what really hit me when I was admiring the pieces. My favorite piece was the body count tags. I literally walked into the center of it and just let myself get immersed. My other favorites were the ballpoint pen on packaging tape, the weighed down broken bicycle, and the Mexican posters. I highly recommend checking this museum out.
google avatar

Jenn E.

Yelp
This museum has some unique art from both local and Mexican artists that you won't find elsewhere in Austin. The admission fee may feel a little steep given the size, but, if you want to support these artists, it is worth it and you can easily spend over an hour enjoying the curated space. We came here after doing some Yelp research when we had about an hour and half to go until our flight. This museum does seem small, at first, but it was crammed with lots of amazing pieces of art - don't let it's initially small feel fool you. You pay for admission in the gift shop and then can wander throughout the museum from there. There wasn't a set sequence to the exhibits so I'd recommend just going to what strikes you the most. If you have bags, the woman working in the gift shop was happy to hold them while you browse. Also, the gift shop had a lot of items crammed into it some of which managed to not feel overly kitschy or commercial. The bathroom is in the back, past all of the exhibits.
google avatar

Sarah E M.

Yelp
We went to the Ofrenda exposition and it was very well-researched; however, the museum itself is small and the ofrendas weren't actually set. We could only see pictures of these ofrendas. I do love the fact that there is a museum of Mexican art in Austin.

leticia r.

Yelp
I don't know what it was before, but this is not a museum, it's just a small art gallery. They don't display any famous known Mexican art work
google avatar

Bee D.

Yelp
I have to come back again so I can thoroughly enjoy the museum. It's a small museum with many things to see and do. I did enjoy the arts and crafts event they had and had a lot of fun. I was surprised that they provided snacks since most museums don't allow foods in the museum. I really wanted to get something from their museum gift shop besides postcards but I failed to plan ahead of time. I'm hoping next time we will be better prepared and be able to get some awesome cool things while we visit.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited during Austin Museum Day 2019. The museum was very quant and intimate with nice exhibits. The museum had a Day of the Dead Exhibition when I visited and I enjoyed the cultural experience of the art and displays. I highly recommend this museum if you are visiting downtown Austin. The gift shop has nice items for sale as well.
google avatar

Yelp
I attended a work event while in Austin. It was pretty cool museum. I loved the art and it was a great space for the Latino Fiesta.
google avatar

Yelp
Great museum in the heart of Austin. Mexico, the Border and Beyond is fantastic. So many great pieces of art. It's also free on Sundays! Definitely worth a stop...
google avatar

Yelp
This is a small museum but very cool sampling of the rich culture of the Latino community. Murals outside and a very nice gift shop. Worth a short stop and a great way to support local arts and culture!
google avatar

Yelp
Mexic-Arte Museum is one of the few institutions in Austin devoted to Latino, Mexican, and Mexican American art. They have exhibitions that rotate out every few months and programming throughout the year. The Museum is only $5 to enter and is free on Sundays. The space isn't huge so you would probably only need about an hour to see everything. The Museum store is a popular site in itself for tourists and visitors. It has a lot of different books, toys, prints, and other products. They're biggest event is the Viva la Vida Day of the Dead Festival. It takes place all day near the holiday and is free and open to the public.
google avatar

Krina S.

Yelp
A great small but very full and detailed museum. I'm not sure how often they change exhibits but I was there to see the Day of the Dead altars (I learned so much about the symbolism of the practice and the day and saw beautiful examples of various types of altars), and a whole gallery full of pictures and information about Frida Kahlo. I never knew much about the artist and fell down a rabbit hole that included a long video playing about her life. I came on Sunday when it was free, which was a bonus. If you're really interested in the exhibits it includes and want to support local museums, the $5 admission otherwise is worth it.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
I went to the museum on January 2, and I was a little let down immediately at the small size of the museum. I think the museum seems slightly thrown together, and that may have to do with the fact that most of the art pieces are from the 1980's or later. It would have been more intriguing if the curator had been able to pull pieces from earlier time periods. I did appreciate that some of the art had longer excerpts next to them telling stories instead of just the name and date of the piece. I think this place is not a museum I would go to more than one time, but it was nice to go once to learn a little.
google avatar

Celestina O.

Yelp
I love this museum! They are always trying to keep up with what people want to see. They put up the most beautiful displays and everything has the information you need right there. On the side of the building there are a few spots to parallel park, if you cannot find parking there you may have to venture out to other streets to see if there is parking and you will have to walk to the Museum. Also, on the side is different murals they paint and update all the time. Great place! Love it here! Staff is always very nice and they have a small gift shop with shirts, trinkets and different things that go with the theme of the museum at the time.

Yelp
Mexic-Arte is one of the places you should experience if you're visiting Austin. And if you're a Latino living in Austin and have not yet made it out here: shame on you. Shame. Ándele, mijo, go get some culture! Yes, it is small, but they have been doing great things for the Latino art community for many years. I've been to many shows here (visual and performance). Some of my friends performed here for SXSW one year. Heck, I've even performed here with my band for an opening and had a great time. Mad props to James Huizar for putting together that fabulous "Grafficanos" show and for bringing some SANER to the ATX, AND for including Niz. Thank you for all you do and for keeping it relevant. Love their little shop, too. There's no such thing as having one too many calaveras shirts.

Yelp
Came here when they were in full-blown Dia De Los Muertos exhibition mode. they had a ton of altars set up with explanations about the history of customs and the significance of certain Latin American figures. It cost $5 to get in, and the museum was pretty quick to get through. The things that probably took the most time were the movie clips they were showing, and the timeline of the history of the museum. One of the pieces from their timeline was about a "Death to Dollars" event they threw to discuss how Dia De Los Muertos and sugar skull imagery have been used to create profits. Reminded me of an article I read on Facebook right after Halloween about "cultural appropriation". Which brings me to their museum shop. They had a ton of cool merchandise, including shirts, mini sugar skulls, candy, and other decor items for the house. Bought a couple of unique gifts, but couldn't help but think about the whole Death to Dollar things. Oh well. It was a good enough way to kill an hour.

Yelp
2 claps for pure culture in Downtown. I've been in Austin for 4-5 years and have seen certain elements of cultures slowly start to be sideswiped at establishments in both East Austin, the Red River district, etc. (that's a topic for offline discussion so I'll spare any further details) so for me, it's a huge win when we have places come up like Mexic-Arte - especially in downtown. I am a huge fan!! Everything about it feels real and pure. Last time I went, I got to experience a showcase where they featured delicious tacos, 3 different Mexican cocktails, a live talk from one of the artists, and an all out celebration of Dia del Muertos. All the pieces were so colorful, large, and detailed. If I wasn't on an "adult starter pack" income, I would have certainly bought one of the pieces. If you're looking for art, well here it is. This spot is the gold standard and I would definitely 10/10 recommend it!

Yelp
This is definitely worth a visit if you're into art museums. To be honest, based on lists of things to do in Austin, I thought there would be more to see in the museum, but for $4 ($5 general admission, $4 students), it's worth exploring the exhibits and learning more about LatinX and Mexican/Mexican-American art. I really enjoyed the different collections and had a good time reading the descriptions and learning more about the art. I don't think younger kids would really enjoy this museum as much, but I definitely would go and visit if you can. Unfortunately, my stomach started to hurt and I had to bounce a bit early...but I would have loved to stay longer. If you're a bit skeptical, go on Sunday...but I'm all about supporting art when I can and $4/5 is really not much to ask. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There is no public restroom available here. I believe the exhibits do change because the exhibits described by fellow Yelpers are different from what I saw today.
