Best Classic Restaurants in Fort Worth | Eater Dallas

"Since 1936, Mexican Inn Cafe has been a go-to spot for Tex-Mex throughout the greater Fort Worth area. The Mexican Inn is renowned for its vibrant and lively atmosphere, as well as its affordable dishes, including sizzling chicken or beef fajitas, brisket enchiladas, classic crispy beef tacos, and street-style tacos, among others. Their margaritas are a crowd favorite. It has opened three additional locations, and at every one, Mexican Inn delivers a great dining experience where each interior looks and feels like the original. Best for: Family dinner nights, meals with friends, and scratching your Tex-Mex itch." - Michael Ellington

Food was good. Very big plate. Chips and salsa was excellent. Didn't care for the queso it was bland. It's a little over priced.

Jayson Cooper

Google
The fajitas were out of this world! Off the chain! Amazing! Lit! Sleigh! And everything else good you can say about them. The parking is a bit far from the door, which made it difficult for the handicapped in our group. Otherwise everything was amazing.

Antonio Helm

Google
This classic TEXMEX done well the interior is midcentury. the service is friendly and prompt classic dishes . The parking is easy too. The margaritas are good. The vegan option is guacamole

Let me start by saying the corn chips with the salsa were delicious. We arrived in time for the lunch menu. Food was okay. The service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. The restaurant was clean and looks well taken care of. Apparently they’re doing something right; they have been there many years.

Google
I've been eating at Mexican Inn for 50 years. (the 8th Avenue cafe is a legacy location, not one of the new modernized locations) If you're looking for good authentic Mexican food that has NOT been Tex-Mex mutated, Mexican Inn is it! Great food and good service at reasonable prices. There is a really good reason they have been around for 85 years!

Google
Very much a great place to eat for lunch or dinner. Food is constantly great, prices are good and excellent service!!

Krista Fisher

Google
Not the same since bought out miss the old 6 choice menu. But a good standard Tex Mex joint especially with buy one get one mail coupon. Has a great deal on family meals use those for get togethers all the time.

Google
We always pass by this little restaurant and we decided to give it a try yesterday. The service was great, our waitress would constantly check up on us, however, the food was ok. It's more Tex-Mex, not authentic Mexican food. Other than that, it's worth giving a try! We had the Deluxe Nachos and the lunch-portioned Fajitas.

Yelp
They have the best chip and salsa They serve you with a smile all the time The prices are a little high but what isn't nowadays

Yelp
Never get tired of dining at Mexican Inn Cafe. I was a baby in my mother's arms when we started dining at Mexican Inn and I'm OLD! I can't even count up the decades. Boy those chips, you've got to watch yourself or you'll soon discover there'll be no room for dinner. But is that a bad thing? I've made myself aware not to go crazy before our dinner entrees arrive. But those Frito-ish homemade chips are SO hard to resist. For dinner this evening, instead of margaritas, we decided on unsweetened tea. I ordered a #4 which consisted of a taco and a cheese enchilada plus rice and beans. My wife ordered a #5, two crispy tacos plus a side of rice and beans. As we waited on our entrees, it was munching time for the chips and hot sauce. Oh, my goodness, they're so good. Another plus is Mexican Inn's homemade corn tortillas. They're also SO delicious. In a flash, our entrees arrived. Time to lay off the chips even though our server brought two more bowls of chips for us to enjoy. The salsa was very good this evening. They do have some hotter salsa that we always ask our server for. We both like things spicy. Our dinner platters were served on hot plates, and the entrees were piping hot. This evening the rice and beans were extra special delicious. The tacos and enchilada were wonderful as usual. We left Mexican Inn with smiling tummies ready to come back again REAL soon.

Yelp
We have eaten here multiple times and it is always delicious. The servers are above average every time. It has San Diego charm.

Yelp
As always one of the best! Been coming here since I was a kid and it never disappoints! Glad to visit since I was back in town. Tiffin Hall FTW! Oscar is the best! What a great lunch and stroll down Memory Lane!

Yelp
I have never been a fan of Mexican Inn. However, my Meemaw wanted to come here so, I said, Yes to the Mexican Inn. Lol. We had such a great experience. The ambiance was beautiful, our waitress was kind and the food was delicious! The Chips were the best I've ever had there!? They were fresh and didn't taste so much like Fritos. The Salsas were good. One Hot Sauce tasted like a can of Tomato and the other was slightly flavored. I mixed the two Salsas to create a new Salsa which was ok. I Ordered the Aroz Con Pollo. It was delicious, salty and well por portioned. It was like three servings of Fluffy Spanish Rice with some chicken chunks topped with queso! It was the perfect combination! I would definitely recommend Mexican Inn for the reasons I previously mentioned.

Yelp
There are at least 3 Mexican Inn Café's in Fort Worth, I've been to all of them. I've been eating in one of these restaurants for 50 years or so. The food is great in all three. The service is awesome. The atmosphere is real Mexican. Large menu, price is very reasonable. Also being from Texas I love Mexican food. I've been to most Mexican restaurants in Fort Worth. The only complaint I have is at the Mexican Inn restaurant on Hulen St. They play the worst music possible. I could deal with bad music but it is so loud I have to take my hearing aids out from my ears. That doesn't help very much. Another issue at this restaurant is the small bowl with chips has a few regular sized chips on the top of the bowl and below the long regular chips are small and crushed chips, not good. But at least I have a choice, I will start eating at the Mexan Inn on 8th Ave, problem solved.

Yelp
Worst food and customer service I've received in decades. The place smells and is overpriced. I'd rather go to taco bueno. Do not recommend at all

Sandra B.

Yelp
My family orders at Mexican inn at least three times a month the manager Annette Rosa was kind taking the order but the cook must have not read the order right I specifically asked for the rice and beans on side she said yes no problem but when I get home order is not right I call nicely to tell her but then gets a smart tone in voice trying to talk over me and says I'm just rambling and she's busy that's not excellent customer service instead of asking how to make the order right she hangs up abruptly I will not be back to this location and now days money is tight customers expect to have their order right to their request what's so hard about that we're paying for our food it's not free my suggestion if this manager feels her position is too hard step down and become a waitress

Yelp
Another location that is our favorite. The restaurant and restrooms are clean. Well known for the vibrant colors. Food is ALWAYS amazing! Delicious and hot! You never have to ask for anything. Chips and salsa, corn tortillas and butter, drink refills, clear your table, and take care of bill. Great service as usual! When you visit this location ask for Marlene for your waitress, she's very kind and attentive.

Sheila L.

Yelp
The food is great, service was great! We gave been coming to Mexican Inn for the last 40 yrs!

Yelp
My husband and I went to lunch here during the week and I know why he raves about it. The homemade salsa, corn chips, and corn tortillas served when you arrive can be a meal by themselves, so fair warning. Don't dive in too much or you'll be over stuffed like me because my meal was delicious and I ate it all! I had the #3 cheese enchilada and chalupa. 10/10 would recommend. We lucked out because it was the week of Thanksgiving and didn't have to wait for a table. The server was really nice and attentive with refills etc. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
So, I grew up with the Mexican Inn locations. The main one being the East Lancaster location because that was the neighborhood I grew up in. Over the years depending on how close I was I always tried to hit that one up. It's mostly stayed the same, but the last couple years or so on visits, it just seemed like the great chips were always really thick and a little stale, while the basic tex mex seemed unseasoned and it usually needed big doses of salt sometimes just to get some taste to it. But I just kinda figured maybe they all headed that way. I ate at this location a long time ago right after it opened, and don't remember a thing about it. Recently I was in the area at dinner and it had been months since a visit so I decided to check out the "other side" kinda. Went in late evening. Interior looks like all the others. Got seated, knew what I wanted, the cheese enchilada and tamale, rice and beans combo. Waiter drops off some chips and salsa. First thing I noticed the chips here were thinner, fresher, and tasted fantastic. Same thing with the salsa, like they had just been made earlier. I know Mexican Inn has always made in house chips, salsa and tortillas, but I also remember years ago when the East Lancaster location had to get theirs from other locations. I don't know if they still do that, but this location had a very obvious taste difference, and it was much better. The food comes out and it tastes a little different also. It actually has some seasoning to it, even a little pepper, and once again, everything tastes...fresher? I'm not sure, but it seemed really noticeable to me. I don't know, but I know it was the best meal at a Mexican Inn I've had in years. Food was great, and service was good. The only thing I noticed was the corn tortillas I got were a little brittle and broken, but not enough that I didn't eat to many! Pretty sure I'm going to make the effort to come to this location from now on.

Yelp
Being from San Antonio, I never thought I would find Mexican food any better here. This place serves unbelievably good Mexican dishes. The ambiance is totally comfortable there. You can watch them make their own crispy tortillas and the best margaritas are served with great prices!

Yelp
This was amazing- as usual. I grew up with Mexican Inn and try to visit every time we are in town. Some of my family members prefer corn tortillas and this is the place for them. The food is always fresh and the staff is help

Yelp
So good. My favorite Mexican Inn in fort worth. Food so much better. No skimming on how much on your plate. Service was great! Easy in & out parking.

Yelp
Excellent Tex Mex. I know Mexican Cafe has been around Ft Worth for some time and Ive wanted to eat here for years. One thing that stands out here is their fresh-made chips and corn tortillas. It's not uncommon these days for restaurants to make their flour tortillas in the house but, corn is rare. It pays off because if you have never had a freshly made corn tortilla, you have no idea what you are missing. The masa used for these is also used to make the chips in the house. They have the appearance of large Fritos but are warm and crunchy with a unique flavor and character all their own. The rest of the meal was acceptable. True Tex Mex consists of cheese or beef enchiladas smothered in chili con carne with a side of beans and rice. Back in the day that's what you were looking for. A pure plate of comfort. Sadly this culturally and historically significant Texas staple is rapidly falling by the wayside. It's hard to find the real deal. I have a feeling Mexican Inn used to be a lot better at what they do. However, this visit for me while not as stellar as Id hoped, provided me with a glimpse into the past and what used to be available all over the state. Definite Go!

Yelp
I'll be waddling out with my food baby if anyone needs me Tried this new-to-me spot off a recommendation from a friend and was not disappointed! The quesadilla was exactly what I wanted and our server was so sweet and attentive. Not my favorite margarita, but still yummy. I think I will be coming back!

Yelp
My job orders from this restaurant on a regular basis. I love this restaurant. The food and service is excellent .

Yelp
We have been going to the Hulen location but drive pass this location all the time & it looked super cute. There was WAY more parking than I thought there would be. Got inside & only had a few minutes wait. Like every other time we got our chips & salsa right away but we did have to ask for our tortillas & butter. Food was amazing & all of the staff we interacted with were awesome! And it has small eating areas so it isn't too loud & makes it more of an Intimate experience. The only thing is that the restaurant needs a deep clean!!! Floors & vents are nasty! Besides that it was a great experience & would go back.

Beverly R.

Yelp
Marissa and Yocelin are so sweet and kind and accommodating! The food is always fantastic at the 8th Ave store! The whole crew is wonderful back of house to front of house! Thanks to the Caroll family for keeping the Mexican Inn tradition alive!
google avatar

Larry L.

Yelp
The soup was excellent and I highly recommend it. I also had one marvelous taco with a very cold beer. The service was great and the ambiance is like a small place I know in Mexico City.

Jason R.

Yelp
This location is ALWAYS clean, the staff is always awesome and the food is always fresh, every single time we've come in here.

Yelp
This place is awful !!!! Bad service or no service at all is what we have experienced. VERY FRUSTRATING.
google avatar

Yitzhak O.

Yelp
Always enjoy their distinctive chips!. I believe that Frito Lay appropriated fritos from them or someone else. Mexican Inn should consider suing for infringement . They are made in house which makes them even better. No complaints about the food. Great service!!
google avatar

Angela E.

Yelp
I'm from Fort Worth and this was a place I used to visit when I was younger. It's always a treat to come back here. The few times I have come here it wasn't that busy, but it was during non-peak hours. The food has always been great here. Fast and friendly service. Their chips and salsa are my favorite! Their chips are shaped like Frito's. I've never seen chips like these before in a Mexican restaurant. They are really crunchy not too greasy. The salsa isn't spicy so it's very easy to keep eating them! Try this place out, you won't be disappointed!

Fallon J.

Yelp
Came in a at 6:45 server didn't come over to the table until 7:10 ask drink order only took one of ours and turned around before getting my wife's drink order maybe just a bad night for the servers but still not acceptable
google avatar

Moniqua H.

Yelp
Loved this place. I got the burrito bowl with half chicken, half brisket. Service was a bit slow for it to be lunch hour, but the food was great. Large portions. You also get complimentary homemade chips, salsa, and tortillas with butter. You'd definitely be full before your food comes out!
google avatar

Chandra J.

Yelp
Went here for lunch on Monday with some coworkers and I was not super impressed by the food or the service. We were on a time crunch due to just having less than an hour for lunch. It took a long time for a waitress to assist us and then for them to bring us our food. The chips and salsa were a little odd--particularly the chips as they were similar to fritos corn chips. They were super greasy and weirdly thick. The salsa was just okay and didn't have a lot of spice or kick to it. For my meal I decided to order their fajitas. The size of the platter was pretty large, but it did lack a lot of flavor. They brought out more than enough tortillas for a few orders of fajitas, which was super nice. Unfortunately this did not make up for the lack of flavor, spices, and service. I will definitely have to pass next time on a visit to Mexican cafe.

Yelp
Very few customers inside the restraunt which was okay by me but, waitress took awhile to arrive at table. We were in a rush so I had to ask for to-go container when ordering. 1 hour lunch but was rushed when finally got food . Pre-covid service was faster/better for sure.

Masood W.

Yelp
All Mexican Inns are delicious. I would say this is perhaps my second favorite restaurant of all the locations.
google avatar

Karla H.

Yelp
Yum!!!! You can never go wrong eating here. Love their chips, they are almost like a corn chip, ie., think a frito chip. Their taco meat is very tasty and the enchiladas are spot on. Good and friendly customer service and very clean facilities.
google avatar

Diane L.

Yelp
I've eaten at most of the Mexican Inn restaurants in Tarrant Country for 50 years. Tonight was my last meal at a Mexican Inn. They have changed the recipe for the corn tortilla chips and the soft corn tortillas -- and they are tasteless! My cheese enchiladas were only lukewarm and very bland. They seem to not care about the quality of their food.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
We decided to have out Cheer Team Dinner here and the staff did a Great Job with our rowdy group of teen girls and obnoxious parents I love the individual servings of freshly made Fritos and salads. Definitely better then your average chips and salsa I ordered the smoked brisket enchiladas plate. Wow!! It was excellent and I highly recommend this plate. The shredded brisket was cooked perfectly and had just enough smoke taste. The wife had the quesadilla and thought it ranked up in the top 10 of other restaurants The building is less then par as a lot of ceiling tiles were stained and the carpet could have used a good cleaning. Bottom line is the restaurant needs some TLC and has potential for being a great.
google avatar

Kiersten W.

Yelp
Best location of all the Mexican Inns. Staff is friendly. I think they just need to update the inside a bit. The seats were uncomfortable to sit in. Three stars for food only because I think its a bit over priced for some of the plates compared to other mexican restaurants.
google avatar

Jeff J.

Yelp
Chicken burrito with double rice... this Mexican Inn location is one of the better ones in the area. Chips are a bit different here more of a "frito" style. Salsa is not spicy at all. Chicken inside the burrito was boring and lacked flavor.

C L.

Yelp
Service was fast and very attentive. The food plates were large portions compared to the price. Free homemade chips and salsa. This is my go to spot for Mexican food- THEY NEVER DISAPPOINT!! The plate I ordered- everything pictured- was $12.

Yelp
On Tuesday night, while visiting Fort Worth, a couple of my friends and I started craving Tex-Mex. I happened to see that Mexican Inn had been in business since the 1930s. I then realized that we had to try it. Quite simply, almost every major Texas city has a place like this -- a place that's been in business forever and has a limited, classic menu of Tex-Mex favorites done right. Here's the run down. Chips and salsa are great. The chips are actually shaped more like Fritos in strips than the usual larger triangular shapes. Still great. And everyone at the table gets an individual bowl of chips and salsa. The queso was also very good. My Tampico plate was awesome. Great classic cheese enchiladas with phenomenal chili gravy. I liked the rolled soft taco with beef and queso -- it was basically an enchilada by any other name. In short, they've been doing the same thing since the 1930s and I see no reason for them to change!

Yelp
Hey, Mexican Inn-- I like your corn tortillas. It's important to get the staples down. I like watching your employees make them while I stand in line to pay. I also like your corn chips. Quite a feat, as I hate Fritos, and your chips are Frito-ish. Made fresh, they're actually edible. Thank you for opening my eyes, tastebuds, mind, and other etc openables. I will stay away from your enchiladas, however. I swear I can eat the whole meal with chips instead of silverware. One liquid, gooey mess it is. I know it makes for an easy exit, but I shall pass. I also had to hear my coworker lament repeatedly how much she did not appreciate her taco salad. The other two were complaining of symptoms that are easily fixable with a couple dozen bottles of Pepto Bismol. Thanks for forcing me to endure the complaining. Not cool, man. Not cool. At least watching your tortilla makers through the glass helped me drown out the noise, since you had me standing in line for 20 minutes with these jokers. I'm rolling my eyes, just remembering. I will eat your quesadillas, however. Kind of a hard thing to screw up, yes, but we're going to have to work together. Especially since we reunite every time you throw in a BOGO coupon in my Valpak. Keep it up. Otherwise, you won't get me back in your doors. Most sincerely, Christine

Yelp
I don't know what it is ... but I really enjoy eating at the Mexican Inn. I have only tried this location once. I usually go to the one in Bedford (which tends to have a better atmosphere). Anyhow ... I love the food. Their chips are like Fritos in a way - but homemade and delicious! They have the tastiest salsa ... have yet to find better. They also give you a serving of corn tortillas to go with your meal. They are made fresh and are yummy with butter and queso. Speaking of which - their queso is delicious! I usually get their enchiladas which are good. The rice is moist and fluffy and the beans are comparable to most places (can't really mess up a refried bean). This time we tried a half order of the fajita nachos as an appetizer and it was delicious! The guacamole was fresh and creamy! They have several kids meals to choose from, but my daughter always insists on a plain burrito (which is not on the menu) and they make it for her every time. The drinks a huge and the service was great. My drink never hit the bottom of the glass (which to me is a sign of good, attentive service). The portions are generous but not overwhelming. I have heard mixed reviews on Mexican Inn's, but for whatever reason ... it hits a soft spot in my belly and I enjoy every bite! Oh, and we left out with a $31 tab. We had two adult drinks, a kids meal, order of sopapillas, two dinners, cup of queso, corn tortillas, and half order of nachos. Can't beat that with a stick!!

Yelp
Mediocre Mexican food, hasn't changed since it opened. I'd recommend a refresher of the 1980 Mexican restaurant look. Get the chicken and rice

Yelp
This is absolutely the best local franchise in DFW. Staple in TexMex without question. Got some out of towners wantin some Mexican food, this is your place. Excellent margaritas and very cold draft beer so Getcha Pull
google avatar

Yelp
Classic Fort Worth Tex-Mex! I love Mexican Inn, they make their own corn tortillas and fried corn chips. Small classic lunch menu. I always order the Arroz con Pollo, bed of Mexican rice, shredded chicken on top and covered in queso with a bean toastada. The food here is always consistently good. Great spot for a quick lunch, always great service too!
google avatar

Beth L.

Yelp
First night in town and Eric had a coupon for a free entrée so he took me here. I was honestly not expecting much but holy shit it was great. They start you off with fresh chips that look like Fritos but so much better. THen we got fresh hot tortillas with great salsa. I order 2 tacos with beef one crispy one crunchy and a pork tamale with rice and beans no cheese. And he got the Tiffan Hall which was basically everything on the menu on a plate. I really really liked it a lot. I can't believe the shitty reviews cause im a picky pain in the ass New Yorker and I loved it here. Great service and great food. Im gonna miss Texas so fucking much.

Yelp
Since 1932 a Ft. Worth tradition is now in Bedford. The Very BEST tostadas freshly made every day. Excellent Flan, Great Beef Tacos, Fantastic Beef Fajitas. Good Pico De Galo, unlimited diet cokes. Good service and reasonable prices.

Yelp
This place is just wonderful for a quick and nice dinner or lunch. Out waitress was outstanding. Her name was Janet and she brought us our food quickly and recommended items to eat and further even brought us some chips to take home we liked them so much. We will be back! Dr John and Karan Quincy

Yelp
The Mexican Inn has changed... In spite of us being one of two couples in the restaurant, the service was very slow and sloppy. As always, the chips and salsa was the highlight of the meal. My wife ordered the fajitas and what arrives at the table was a sizzling platter fajita-style pot roast. She found it flavorful, but was disappointed that it was not the traditional skirt steak. I ordered the beef street tacos and received the same pot roast on a corn tortilla. It was served with bean, rice and a green cream salsa. The taco itself consisted of meat and 2 died out corn tortillas. I honestly believe that the Mexican Inn would close in a month if it wasn't for their chips a salsa.
