9 Dallas Destinations Celebrating MargaritaCon This Spring | Eater

"With any luck, Selena will be playing over the speakers as you spice up your day with a cocktail inspired by one of the superstar’s biggest hits. Como La Flor starts with jalapeño-infused Astral Tequila Blanco, which finds balance with agave, fresh lemon juice, elderflower liqueur, and a hibiscus ice cube that slowly releases floral aromas and flavors as you sip. For a snacky companion that complements the chile and citrus notes, opt for the lobster fundito, a decadent blend of warm cheeses, garlic, and big chunks of buttered lobster." - Steven Craig Lindsey

The Best Restaurants in Plano - Eater Dallas

"Mexican food with a touch of worldly inspiration is the order of the day at Mexican Sugar — the original location is in Plano. It’s got tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas, of course, but also a bone-in pork chop, mesquite-grilled salmon, and seafood paella. And at some point, trying one of its agave flights is highly recommended." - Courtney E. Smith

Phenomenal Experience at Mexican Sugar! From the moment we walked in, everything was top-notch. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, the food was absolutely delicious, and the drinks were crafted perfectly. But what really made the night memorable was our server, Alejandro. He was attentive, friendly, and made us feel like VIPs from start to finish. The food? Incredible. The chicken and carne asada fajitas were sizzling and full of flavor, the pork tacos were tender and perfectly seasoned, and don’t even get us started on the avocado chocolate cake—rich, unique, and the perfect sweet ending. You can tell Alexandro genuinely cares about the guests having a great experience—and we absolutely did. Do suggest the staff meeting be held in a different location. Diners do not need to experience it. If you’re thinking about visiting Mexican Sugar, do it. And if you’re lucky enough to get Alejandro as your waiter, you’re in for a treat. We’ll definitely be back!

The ambiance was amazing. Very beautiful and aesthetic. Candles were very beautiful at the tables. The menu is straight to the point, but the food I order turned out amazing. The staff is very welcoming, friendly, and have outstanding service. Their happy hour is everyday from 2-6p with good deals. I will definitely plan to come back again!

My daughter and her husband came to visit after her Graduation of becoming 2d Lieutenant in the Air Force passing through to go to her next assignment and choose this amazing restaurant. What a wonderful classy, casual kind of atmosphere and vibe was welcoming and happy they have plenty of seating for small or large parties great customer service very attentive, quick with the service, proper portion size and very pretty serving dishes . Food came out hot and amazing. Their salsa is number one in the world. I’ve never tasted salsa so good. I have been in Texas almost 8 years and never have been to this restaurant yet and I have been missing out ! I highly recommend this place to any and everyone who ever visits Texas!

Tried this location and was seated in the patio area coz we had our fur baby shih tzu. Cozy and clean. Happy with David's service as he always checks us time to time. Lunch meals were very tasteful. Will be back again :)

Google
Great happy hour spot. I am not a fan of the warm salsa that comes with the chips but they have a habanero based salsa that really has a kick. Margaritas are great. Even the queso is a little spicy. Their veg quesadillas are really good.

Roberto was an amazing server! We had a party of 7 and although there were a few wait times for things-he communicated them with us (we were happy everything was fresh!) and gave us an amazing experience. We already can’t wait to come back!

Google
I had an amazing experience at Mexican Sugar! The food was incredible, but what really stood out was the exceptional service. Manager Katie went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect, and bartender Juan is truly next level—his cocktails were some of the best I’ve had, and his attention to detail was impressive. The atmosphere is vibrant, and the whole team makes you feel welcome. If you're looking for great food, expertly crafted drinks, and top-tier service, this is the place to be. Highly recommend!

Google
Extraordinary food - we got the steak tacos and the margarita flight was awesome! The server, Mario, was amazing! He was so quick and was managing multiple tables. He was friendly and polite. The vibes here are great!

Yelp
Hey, I won't be able to say everything I want to say because there's not enough space. This is the best Mexican restaurant this side of heaven! We have had Mexican all over the world and nothing compares to this place. The decor is beautiful and makes you feel so relaxed. When we're walked in, the gentleman at the desk had some good jokes for us. We were seated promptly because we had a reservation! I do suggest you make a reservation. Our server Adjae, was fantastic. We watched her take care of us and so many others at the same time. Everything we asked for, she was on point with getting it. She made some great recommendations and we went with everything she recommended. We started off with the arepas. This was a cake tortilla with brisket and a slaw with an amazing sauce. This could have been an entree! It was delicious and full of different flavors. Our entrees were the fried shrimp tacos, lump crab enchiladas and the carnitas. I'm running out of space but trust me, all three were amazing!!! We tried eating slow but couldn't do it. I forgot about the salsa with the roasted peppers and the creamy queso. The churros were the best! You can definitely tell that these did not come out of the freezer. This place will make me fly back just to eat dinner. I will be back!!!!

Yelp
Mexican Sugar seems to be very hyped up, and I feel as though I was slightly disappointed with my first experience at this establishment. We had a reservation, which is definitely a good idea because this place was very busy. Although, we were seated in the front area near the hostess stand with the tables four two and this area was not filled up. I think the location of our table was my first disappointment. We were right near the entry, which made it a bit loud as people were entering and leaving and many people were often waiting in this area. It was also a bit chilly with the door opening and closing. AND, it was extremely dark lighting, and the candle on the table was so dim I could barely even see the menu to order. At least no one could see what I was wearing or if I spilled anything on myself... Getting to our orders. We started with some frozen drinks (I went with the passion fruit Classico Frio) and enjoyed those. Then we finally managed to order starters. I couldn't decide between the ceviche and the Arepas, and I'm glad we ordered both. The cevich wasn't my favorite (My only comparison being Peruvian ceviche I'd had earlier this summer in Lima...) but it was ok. And the arepas were quite good, and I would recommend those as a sound choice. It took a minute to get our orders for dinner in too because it was busy, but eventually we got to our meals. It was hard to decide what I wanted, but I ended up going with the Mango Napa Chicken. It was FAR TOO MUCH FOOD to eat, but it was tasty and fresh and I was happy for that. Our server was pleasant, but I felt like we were a little ignored, and I want to be kind because I know how busy it was. I tried to take time and enjoy the experience of girls night out with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time. It's worth checking Mexican Sugar out if you're in the area, but be prepared for it to be busy, with larger groups, and perhaps dim lighting.

Yelp
Amazing food and absolutely crap service. First of all, the server gives us a sangria which was about 3 ounces. We asked him why it was so small and he said, "it was just a big glass". I'm not a moron. Water was left without being filled most of the night and we asked our server for more chips which he never brought. We ended up asking another server for some and it was brought right away. Our server was dismissive, curt and inefficient. Even my kid said he gave us the "side eye". Again, all of the food we had was amazing. Too bad they can't hire better servers. Just destroyed our meal. I reached out to the manager who responded to a review on Open Table and he never got back to me. This seems to be on-brand for this restaurant.

Yelp
Cute restaurant in a plaza of different areas. It kind of reminded me of La Encantada mall in Tucson Az. The host wasn't too friendly. We showed up without a reservation during a Saturday night. We knew there was going to be a wait.. we were fine with that. Rather than waiting she sat us right away but told us 3 times she needed the table at 8:15. Each time she was past by our table she would see how far we were with our meal. She even encouraged our server to check on us and try to rush us.. Overall the food was yummy! I got a mezcal flight. We all finished our food. The ceviche app was different from what I'm used to, it seemed to have more of a Peruvian / Colombian or something. Overall very flavorful and I ate it all. I do recommend this place for a night out. There were high schoolers who even celebrated their homecoming there dressed up.

Yelp
Our group of 11 girls enjoyed a lively Monday dinner at here. Despite being a weekday, the place was surprisingly busy. To start, we indulged in refreshing mocktails, along with a satisfying combination of guacamole and queso with chips. We also tried the elote corn, which was a bit cheesier than anticipated. For our main courses, we ordered a variety of dishes that were all enjoyable, though not particularly outstanding. To cap off the evening, we indulged in delicious churros and tres leches, which were the highlights of our meal.

Yelp
My bear and I had the perfect Tex Mex evening for our first night in Plano. We dined at Mexican Sugar on a Sunday night where it was relatively bustling with good vibes. The waiter brought out warm chips and warm salsa. I ordered shrimp and beef fajita while my bear ordered 3 brisket tacos. My dish absolutely knocked my socks off when I saw the sizzling plate and fragrant meat; I practically drooled waiting for my dish to cool a bit before digging in. We ordered an Out of Office cocktail (the best one, with tajin!), Como La Flor, and La Catarina. I left pretty tipsy from drink 1.5 cocktails, and extremely satisfied to have enjoyed a romantic, tasteful night with my bear. We were enchanted by the beautiful decor and tiles. This was a wonderful dinner :)

Yelp
We still come here every once in a while, and one thing I'm glad to say is that Mexican sugar stays reliable for good service, food, and drinks. I recommend trying the lobster Fundito, the lump crab enchiladas are a favorite of mine, and all their drinks are worth trying . I personally enjoy the margarita flights, the chupa, and their espresso martini. Perfect for a date night , and always playing good music too :)

Yelp
We a large party and had a great dinner. Service was amazing Steven V was our server and was so attentive

Yelp
I had a great late lunch with the restaurant. Excellent service and outstanding food not rushed and very attentive staff. The ambiance was relaxing and enjoyable and they answered all questions about the menu. ,

Yelp
I've been visiting Mexican Sugar with my friend, who is absolutely fixated on their quesadillas, so I've found myself here more often. On my third visit, I decided to try the mushroom tinga. It was decent, but I'm still on the hunt for the perfect dish that hits the spot for me. That said, this visit did improve my overall experience and rating for Mexican Sugar. Katie and Rodolfo were incredibly amazing--so kind, funny, and helpful. Rodolfo, who bears a striking resemblance to Pedro Pascal (haha!), even brought us a bag hanger, which was a nice touch. The service was exceptional, and they really made our evening enjoyable. They understood and fulfilled everything we asked for and wanted without any issues. However, I've noticed something odd during my visits: the items on my bill are always different. The price never seems consistent because each server rings things in their own way, which I find a bit strange. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's something to be aware of. Despite that, the interior of Mexican Sugar is beautiful and always impresses. Every time I mention this place to my friends and peers, they rave about the ambiance, especially the stunning décor. Apparently, I'm just ordering the wrong things, so I'm still going to continue to explore the menu to find my go-to dish, but the overall experience, particularly the service, keeps me coming back.

Yelp
Mario was amazing!! Great dining experience this weekend thank you for the margaritas recommendation
google avatar

Yelp
This place is an excellent venue for a mixer or gathering - there was an Association of Former Law Clerks for the Eastern District of Texas meeting during the EDTX Bench Bar Conference. Awesome margaritas and Mexican food. Excellent service as well. Recommended!

Yelp
The Mexican sugar location in legacy sooo much better than Dallas. It's like two different restaurants. I went here specifically for the Latin paella which has rice, lobster, mussels, shrimp and more! It's so good and big to share. Also got the margarita flight! My favorite was the hibiscus margarita
google avatar

Caroline K.

Yelp
Such a fun atmosphere outside with the music playing! We started off with chips and their award winning queso, and the title was well earned! The fajitas had great flavor, and the meat was cooked perfectly. The mango chicken salad was the best salad I have ever had at any Mexican restaurant. Shout out to Steven for the incredible service, we will definitely ask for him every time!
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
What an experience! Mexican sugar is a more upscale vibe at a great price point. The food is to die for. We loved absolutely everything we had. The queso was some of the best! We also ordered the burger, which was such a great concept integrating Mexican style with an American classic. Service was friendly and the ambience really takes the cake. This was a perfect date for a summer night. We love this location and hope to be back soon!
google avatar

Vandad C.

Yelp
The hamburgesa was definitely one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. I was a little bit famished when I walked in so that might be affecting my review a bit but I would fly back to Plano just to eat that burger again. The restaurant itself is pretty nice and a mix of classy/casual but also incredibly loud. I had a hard time hearing the person sitting across from me just to give you an idea.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice interior, fresh juice, usually good service. My wife's favorite spot for chicken enchiladas. I like the fish tacos and lump crab. Please get UBEReats to allow comments for special requests and/or ability to select/ deselect options for each menu item.

Yelp
This place was so cute! It had amazing service and the ambience was perfect! The food was amazing and the drinks were top notch! This is a definite recommend and we will be back!

Yelp
We had a great evening out with the family. Our waiter Steven was very attentive and gave us great service for our large party.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican restaurant in DFW so far! I come here all the time and it's always good. Sometimes the service is better than other times but the food is always delicious. The agua frescas of the day are so good and everything is usually priced really low for what it is. Except the last time we went, it seems like we were overcharged, so I'm not sure if they raised their prices or if it had to do with the time of day (it was evening). The ambiance is upscale and different vibes for different rooms. I'll keep coming back.
google avatar

Blas G.

Yelp
The food was so delicious! The atmosphere was great and service was out of the world. Steven was very attentive and had great food suggestions. I would definitely recommend for a date night.

Kevin H.

Yelp
I visited this place today and it's a very good place to eat. the service was great, and I got my meal in a timely manner. The atmosphere was family friendly, and the staff was professional knowledgeable. It does have some spice to it but its only certain items. The drinks were very fresh too. I definitely recommend this place to those who are wanting great mexican food

Chandra D.

Yelp
Amazing service!!! Mario was great!! The chips and salsa were excellent. I will definitely be back to the Plano location!
google avatar

Pam C.

Yelp
I'm sad to report that my carnita tacos were dry and unflavored. I did like the crunch of the fresh chicharrones, however it didn't cover up the stiff pieces of pork. 1 1/2 sad stars for these hard-to-mess-up tacos. I did enjoy the Sopes appetizer. These tasted like a leveled up tamale and the avocado crèma was a nice accompaniment. 5 stars for the Sopes. Margarita, chips and salsa also delicious. Service tonite was slow and unattentive. Noise level was high.
google avatar

Azsure D.

Yelp
The highlight is how simply gorgeous this restaurant is. I came for a women's history month ladies brunch. We felt welcome warm and attended to in this gorgeous location. Brunch menu is fairly priced. There are no vegan options for brunch despite the vegan notification in Yelp. I ordered a horchata and it was good. We got apps to share. The salsa is mole and not spicy. My main was chicken chilaquiles which humongous. Way too big. I had a stomach ache and could not even eat dinner. But they were delicious. I recommend plate splitting. Service was prompt and courteous. They allowed us ladies to take our time. Highly recommend this restaurant!!
google avatar

Yelp
I would say on a Friday night this place was hopping. I am glad we had reservations. Having move from San Antonio not too long ago we are still in pursuit of great Mexican food. Loved the ambiance and the food was good but by no means great. I would call this a 1 if in San Antonio. Regardless had the carne asada fajitas. A great Mexican restaurant starts with great tortillas. The tortillas were nothing out of the ordinary. The meat itself was cooked well and super flavorful. The rice and beans were okay and the salsa did not have much kick or potency. The best thing they have going for them is the churros. I had seen that on other reviews and I concur. They were cooked fresh and full of sugar and cinnamon. They came accompanied with a berry, chocolate and whipped cream dippers.
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
After visiting a different Mexican Sugar location earlier in the week while in Dallas for a book signing, my husband couldn't stop talking about the pork chop, so we decided to take our TX family to the Plano location before headed to the airport! Everyone obviously wanted to try the pork chop so they all ordered it and loved it! Said it was the most delicious and tender pork chop ever! They also really enjoyed the chips and warmed salsa as well as overall vibe of the restaurant and the friendly staff! They both said before we left that they will definitely come back for another delicious pork chop!
google avatar

Erica J.

Yelp
First impression of this restaurant was how amazingly beautiful and perfectly decorated this restaurant is. I was highly impressed and definitely an atmosphere that I look for in a restaurant. There is a long bar with plenty seating and the dining area is pretty large. We started off with chips and salsa and a side of guacamole. I could honestly eat my weight in both of these items. I ordered the steak enchiladas, and it was a very heavy dish with not much flavor to it. wasn't impressed unfortunately. The staff was very nice and attentive. I have absolutely no complaints on that. Overall, I would consider coming back but getting a different dish.
google avatar

Emy C.

Yelp
Not my first time and not the last! I enjoy going to Mexican Sugar. They have menu options of all ranges, from small plates, to delicious salads y main entrees. I love their guacamole, always fresh. My favorite dish is the carnitas tacos and of course, that goes well with a flight of margaritas. Erick took care of us. He was super friendly, gave us suggestions on new menu items, and convinced us to have dessert!
google avatar

Ajay S.

Yelp
Came with a large group and thought this was a good place. The margaritas were small, but slightly strong. The appetizers were ok, had veggie quesadillas and a queso dip. The chicken fajitas were good, large portions of chicken, with a side of rice and beans. Just thought it should come with some lettuce. Desert was a chocolate almond cake and this was sweet, you could feel a layer of sugar layer on it, and it was big. Great.
google avatar

Randy M.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant. Overall great experience. Highly recommend the Carne Asada Tacos and anything off the tequila menu that they have.
google avatar

Missy S.

Yelp
The over all experience was great. The service was subpar- our server wasn't friendly and seemed bothered when asked questions about the ingredients. The food was decent. The ambiance was trendy, intimate and comfortable.
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Come here every now and then & have never had a bad time!! Try the Carnitas if you go, they're so good! The service is never bad either!
google avatar

Geetasai K.

Yelp
Ambiance is vibrant. A perfect fine dining place. Food is good. Service can be littler better. We ordered Mesquite Grilled Chicken and Shrimp tacos, Taste is good.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Mexican Sugar! The atmosphere was nice, albeit noisy. We had the shrimp and our friend had the tuna as appetizers. In addition the chips were fresh and the salsa had a nice smoky flavor to it. My husband had the pialla and I had the tortilla soup. They were both excellent choices! Then we finished up the meal with churros, which were hot and fresh. What a great experience and ambiance!

Area R.

Yelp
I've visited this location before and the service and food has always been amazing during lunch time but Sunday night was a different story. I ordered the shrimp fajitas and they didn't come out on the fajita board and when the waitress bought the food out it was like warm, rice was mushy and the waitress we had was horrible.

Cat Z.

Yelp
The redfish ceviche totally rocks. Ask for Jennifer for great service! Seat at the patio next to fountain. Cocktails are delish.
google avatar

Moriah H.

Yelp
Service was attentive and parking was easy enough in the parking garage. There wasn't anything special about the chips but the salsa tasted yummy. I ordered a shrimp salad and completely enjoyed it. The ambiance of Mexican Sugar is really superb. I'll be back when I have guests in town to treat.
google avatar

Carmen H.

Yelp
Took a friend from out of town to Mexican Sugar. Boy, what a sad experience. Food & Service were both horrific! Our server was Jennifer and she was MIA. Our drinks took forever We were ready to order the minute our butts hit the booth, but it took forever. We ordered the Chicken Napa Mango salad to spilt. Then we wished to spilt the Striped Bass, splitting also. Our food took over 30 minutes!!!! The salad did not come yo our table ahead of time...it came with the fish. The salad was hot, soggy, dripping in salad dressing...like it had been under the heat lamps. Also the salad had burnt cashews. The fish was warm, also dripping in sauce...it was pooling on the plate. Our fish was overcooked, fishing tasting and the fillet was the tail end of the fish. We were lacking in salsa refills, like I mentioned earlier, Jennifer, was MIA!!! I was so embarrassed! What a negative experience!!!
google avatar

Temika M.

Yelp
The food was okay. The server was good but you can tell they were understaffed because the wait times in between getting food was a little long. I thought the chips were free until I got the bill but was good. I did like the ambiance and would return because of that alone. The manager was out on the floor assisting, so that speaks volume with me being in the industry! Good service out ways all things!
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
This place was amazing. The staff was so welcoming. Our server gave us great recommendations. The pork chop is definitely the best I have ever had. I'm truly jealous we don't have this restaurant in Charlotte. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Vancy S.

Yelp
How the area has grown over the past 10 years! There weee so many restaurants to choose from. Love seeing my city grow. We came in on a Friday night and it was busy. I saw a lot of people that came in after work. Great to see business offices in the area. The place was busy. We had the striped bass, seared to perfection and delicious. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. Margaritas were strong and good. Overall great place for your Mexican food cravings!
google avatar

Emily N.

Yelp
Best fajitas I have ever had! It was cooked to perfection, juicy, and tender. the chicken fajitas were pretty good too and was not dry at all. I just wished that it was on a sizzling plate like other places but I can see how that would make their operations less efficient. If you like spicy food, you should request some hot sauce from here. I was full on expecting cholula when I requested hot sauce but our server came back with some homemade hot sauce that was actually fire. That was honestly a super slay. I really liked the decor and ambiance here. Good vibes all around!
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
On a work, this restaurant was recommended to me because it was near my hotel. And I am so glad it was! Sat on the patio, ordered the margarita flight (one traditional margarita, one watermelon jalapeño and one hibiscus) all delicious! Chips served with warm salsa comes to the table as well. I ordered the chicken fajita plate and it was spectacular. Fresh, filling and flavorful!! Highly recommend. Overall wonderful experience, less expensive than I would think for food, drink and ambiance this great! Try it, you'll love it

Yelp
Yelp 100 Challenge 2023 #62 Mexican Sugar has a collection of over 150 premium tequilas, mezcals, and agave-based spirits. Brunch is served Saturday & Sunday until 3pm. I reserved my reservation online and I recommend that you do the same. Mexican Sugar can be quite busy at times, so just reserve your spot to ensure you have a table. Food On my visit, I ordered the chicken enchilada and churros, everything was delicious. On my next visit I plan on trying there tacos. Be sure to save room for their complementary chips and salsa. Ambiance Plenty of seating for different size parties and the booths are huge. Dim/ low light which makes for a relaxing environment.
google avatar

Yelp
My friend and I checked out Mexican Sugar last month and had a fabulous experience! The margaritas were amazing - we had the flight and then tried a couple more on their own! Our table loved the Fajitas and the Shrimp, Avocado and Lime salad.
