This restaurant is a true classic, worthy of celebration.
There seems to be a prevailing opinion that the restaurant is out of date. I want to make a case for why we should see that as as positive.
Mexican Village is THE original Detroit Mexican restaurant. Heck, it even predates the designation of the neighborhood as "Mexicantown." The restaurant's decor symbolizes a snapshot in time in which one of Detroit's most consistently vibrant communities came to fruition.
Next time you visit and are appreciating the mouthwatering enchiladas, savory chips and salsa, and refreshing margaritas at more than reasonable prices, look around you. Who do you see? A microcosm of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan more generally.
Across the street at Peso (think of what that name symbolizes), or whatever latest incarnation of that space the Jacques attempt to shove down our throats, you will NOT see this racial and economic diversity. As the Modern day colonizers attempt to gentrify our city, we must appreciate these classic establishments.
I have celebrated birthdays, graduations, homecomings, Cinco de Mayos, and bon voyages at Mexican Village. But regardless, *any* visit to this restaurant is a celebration of Detroit's rich Mexican heritage and the sprit of Detroit more generally.
