Mexican Village in Detroit Has Been Damaged in a Fire | Eater Detroit

"The Shelby Township branch at 47350 Van Dyke Ave. — part of the same long-established operation — remains open and was contacted for comment about the downtown location’s fire. It continues to serve the same Mexican-American favorites (burritos, flour flautas, enchilada platters, and margaritas) while the original site is temporarily closed." - Serena Maria Daniels

While the food looked great, there was a distinct lack of flavor. Especially for Mexican dishes. Both of our drink orders were wrong. But the atmosphere was nice, family oriented…

The Queso Flameado is a meal in itself!! So delicious! Beef and cheese enchiladas are really good. I didn't have it, but the chimichanga was huge and looked fantastic. It was enjoyed by the person eating it. Chips and salsa are yummy. Margaritas are nice and strong. I used to LOVE the beef burrazo, but the last time I had it, it was changed and I didnt very much enjoy that very much.

The food is nothing like the food at the mexican village in detroit. It was SO unseasoned and tasteless. The portion was half the size despite costing more, the tortillas were barely grilled, the vegetables lacked char and weren’t soft, the meat was unseasoned, and there was no cheese in sight. I definitely would not eat here again as there are much better options even in this area.

Staff was very helpful. Palomas were well made. Asada tacos are recommended. The salsa was spectacular, they serve a spicy one and a not spicy one which is great! Not many places do that. They were flavorful. The birria tasted authentic. The establishment is beautiful, got stained glass windows and arched walls.

Beef Burrazo amazing first.time here guacamole is on point. My waitstaff is on on point, good staff with great food and nice looking mix drinks 🍸 😋

In the Utica area and searching for the best restaurant experience with all of your favorite Mexican food in a fantastic setting? This is it! •Atmosphere• This restaurant was very clean inside and out. The seating is spacious and comfortable and the mood is set with lively tunes and classic Mexican decor that takes you on a trip of your own south of the border. A great place for both adults and families alike, this local fantasy is a hidden gem! •Service• The service here was fast, friendly, and very professional! Our server Manuel was not only polite and very knowledgeable, but also made sure we didn’t need for anything the whole time we were there! We were seated immediately, checked on and catered to, and treated like family! •Food• This restaurant had all of my Mexican favorites but the flavors are unique to them and really stand out! That steak was marinated in some sort of Sangria that gave a deep sitting tasty flavor that I have never experienced and was so thick and tender I can’t get the taste out of my mind. The margarita pitchers are strong and freshly made and the salsa is addicting. I was truly amazed! This restaurant is a MUST TRY and I give it a a strong 4.5/5 flames 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Definitely recommend and will be back again!

Yelp
Chips and salsa is always good and fresh. Server is attentive and you can't go wrong with the (beef) Burrazo. Dining area is always brightly lit.

Yelp
Mexican Village has had consistently good food for years. I can't think of ever having a bad meal here. The service is prompt, there's plenty of room for moving around. In other words, it's not packed with tables. The ambiance has that feel you'd expect at a Mexican restaurant. Theres plenty of parking, so no worries about parking spaces. It's no wonder Mexican Village has lasted for years and years. They're doing things right.
google avatar

Yelp
Jalen (server) was so accommodating and nice. The size of the super nacho is humongous for a party of one and not skimpy on your choice of meat nor cheese. Pack your appetite! Expedient service!

Yelp
I have occasionally had better, and I've had worse also. Sometimes what you're really after is something that is reliable and not too expensive. This place strikes me is just the right mix of those two things. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food this is not it. If you're looking for a reasonably good tasting meal that you can afford to feed your whole family with this is definitely a good spot. I went with the fish tacos tonight and found the tortillas and fish to both be very fresh and tasty. The chips and salsa were excellent. My server was attentive and polite. They must be very popular as the room was full. I don't know that I would come back, but it served its purpose well tonight

Yelp
I went on a Friday around 5pm, surprisingly there was a small crowd. We were seated quickly with warm chips and salsa. Our drinks were out within 5 minutes, and our entrées took about 10 minutes. The food was hot, crispy and delicious! The service was great! Our waitress was very friendly and polite! The prices are fair with good quality food! Our experience was very pleasant and we are going back very soon!

Yelp
First time coming was at aldis picking up food and it smelt so good outside so we decided to look around and see what was around it happened to be this Mexican village restaurant we walked inside not even knowing the name and this place was busy. Table of 2 25/30 min wait on Sunday afternoon. Got seated promptly. I got the fajitas it was cooked to perfection and literally so flavorful! Got the chicken tortillas soup was also very delicious! Will have to be back to try out other items. Please was clean and staff was very nice.

Yelp
Awful experience! I've been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and always have enjoyed the food. Today I placed a take out and received the wrong items. I called back and they said it was my error and they would not replace it with what I wanted, Most restaurants never argue their point with a customer. They just fix the wrong and apologize for the mix up. I've known the owner for years and his son. We always tip well and get great customer service. But not anymore and I will never go back. Sad ending to what once a great place for us. All because of two bowls of cal-do. Cancun!

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
I love this place. ! The food is EXCELLENT!! The service is GREAT? It makes one feel as if they are in a Mexican Grotto. Great ambience! Their drinks are absolutely incredible. I been going here for years.

Grace B.

Yelp
I have been going here for around 10 years now, this is by far my favorite mexican out there. The caldo can cun soup is SPECTACULAR!! The service is always amazing, and the vibes are always great. The queso flameado is also drop dead delicious. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! If i could give it 100 stars I would!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not sure how anybody could give this place anything but 5 stars. It's family owned. You see the same faces when you go which is nice. The enchiladas are amazing. No idea what is in their cheese blend but it's fire. Their margaritas are good too. They don't just taste like sour mix like a lot of places.
google avatar

Yelp
Seating is crowded. Not a good place for large parties. Drink menu does not contain prices. I called in advance and asked if we could get separate checks and was told no. We

Yelp
I ate here the other day, loved the taquittos. Seem to be hand made, so thats always a plus. Service is quick, I love the salsa. Unique and stands out. The vibe is nice, place is clean and well put together. Came in with 6 people and we didn't have to wait long to be sat or for the food to be brought out. I'd recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Arizona plate with chicken/beef with cheese is great. Enchiladas with pork is the best so my BF says. Enjoyed the queso Fundito but they have cut back on the amount of chorizo they add. Staff is attentive. Inside decor is nice and always clean. Used to really enjoy the Burrazo with the chunky beef but over the last few years it appears the beef has not been left to cook long enough so it's tough and not nice and tender like it used to be. I dine here because the family wants to go, not because I would pick here to dine anymore as my fav dish is just not what it used to be.

Yelp
After years of hearing good things about this place, I finally decided to give it a chance. Holy crap, what a mistake that was. Why I didn't realize that most of the recommendations for this place were from suburbanite, non foodie acquaintances who are scared to death of ethnic food and think Outback Steakhouse is fine dining is beyond me. My mistake. If you're looking for good, authentic Mexican food, skip this place. Go a couple miles south to Las Tortugas or head to Oaxaca in Troy or Carnival Market in Auburn Hills...just don't go here. This place has some of the most bland, unexciting MEH-xican food I've ever tried. As basic as it comes. Normally I'm a chips and salsa junky, love the stuff. Needless to say at first glance I was a little annoyed by the up charge noted on the menu for chip refills. That disappointment departed when the first basket arrived. No salt, no flavor, reminded me of a catholic communion wafer. We didn't even finish half the basket. Rough way to start the meal. For entree, I had the wet burrito. I'm not sure that the chili topping wasn't Hormel chili from a can, even worse, it was cold. The meat and bean filling were bland, Taco Bell quality ingredients. My wife had chicken enchiladas. She had the same complaint. Her food was bland, flavorless and absolutely caked in entirely too much greasy cheese. All in all, it was a terribly disappointing experience full of bland, Americanized versions of Mexican adjacent dishes.

Lisa

Yelp
This is our go to place. We love the margaritas and the food. We go there a LOT and are never disappointed. The owners and staff are amazing.

Yelp
The place was packed even though it's a large place with plenty of seating. Upon arrival I was told 30-40 minute wait time but we were seated within 20 minutes. The server was super nice and patient. He checked on us regularly, and was on top of his game. The spicy salsa was decent, but rest of the food was absolutely flavour less. They used mozzarella cheese on top of enchiladas, literally thick layer of pizza cheese on tortillas. No red sauce. The beans and rice were also lacking flavour/spice. Enchiladas verde were by far one of worst things I have ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
Grandma wanted a margarita so we brought her here. She was happy with the margarita. We got chips and salsa, they were good. You have to pay for any additional chips and salsa. It's only a dollar but still annoying as a table of 4 goes through a basket pretty quickly. I got the cheese enchiladas and they had no sauce just cheese inside and on top of the tortilla. I was hoping for sauce but maybe I had to ask for it and was unaware. Husband got the chicken enchiladas and grandma got fajitas. It is good for Americanized mexican. There are better and more authentic Mexican restaurants in the area but overall we had a good experience.

Jeff L.

Yelp
The food was horrible. Ordered beef and cheese burrito came without cheese. Was flavorless. The place was packed and had people waiting to get in though, so seems I'm a rare exception. But Taco Bell is better than this place was. The service was good. The server was friendly. The pina colada was ok. Definitely would not pay for this again. Very overpriced meal for horrible food. And they charge extra if you want more chips - whoever heard of that???

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick late lunch on a Saturday. We hit between the rushes so we avoided a wait for a table. Staff as always was super friendly and sat us immediately. Within minutes we had waters and chips and salsa (mild and hot). Placed our orders and the drinks were served promptly. Allowing us to sip and enjoy the chips. The food was served quickly and everything was spot on and delicious. This is the go to place Mexican food outside of the Mexican Town in Detroit.

Yelp
I came here for dinner last night with a friend upon his recommendation. He's a regular here and said the foods legit, so I said sure, why not! Walking in the place was busy. It took an hour for us to get seated. While I'm not excited about the wait, The place has some really good food. I normally get tacos, but was told the enchiladas were worth trying so I did. I went with the ground beef version so I could see how it tasted. When the food came out, the servings were huge. I was impressed. I had enough left over to take home and have for lunch the next day. We did get chips and salsa before our meal and it was a okay. Our server was fabulous, but due to him being busy we were a bit forgotten about at some point. Nothing major since he did a good job but it took longer than normal to get our drinks and refills because he had a lot of tables. They have a bar in the front where the lobby is with plenty of seating throughout the place. Unfortunately, the bar area's pretty much standing room only. Parking is fine here but since it gets so busy be prepared to find a spot in outer space. Overall a good spot and would be happy to return during a way less busy time.

Yelp
I seriously wanted to like this place and get hyped up like all these other reviews but..... I just can't... The restaurant was/is very Mexican American food nothing to knock your socks off menu based... The restaurant overall is nice and seemed clean with little to no problems with dishes or dirty floors. Typical Mexican look on the inside nothing crazy. The waiter seemed very nice and always seemed to be prompted on drinks, unfortunately we couldn't really hear him since he talked low we had to really pay attention. The food was personally mediocre at best.. My GF and I got the same which was a combo platter came with a wide selection for $15 each. I was full at the end but overall it was kinda flavorless and seemed to be mostly lettuce and tomatoes rather than meat. My son got a chicken quesadilla with queso sauce on the side..... He said the quesadilla was good and so was the sauce...This is where it got VERY disappointing... $4.59 for a small bowl I'd not even consider a bowl of the sauce... that's highway robbery!!! The quesadilla was $14 which is also very high and doesn't include no beans or rice! I truly don't understand the hype around this place.... I honestly feel the food and prices are way higher than what they are severing... There's higher quality restaurants in the area or a little bit more of a drive for higher quality food and better prices. I'll be passing on returning back to the restaurant

Yelp
This place has my favorite mexican food in town. The quality is way above average and their cheese is unmatched. I don't know how they do it, but I hope they never stop.

Yelp
I can't believe I have never reviewed Mexican Village! This has been a go to place for us for Mexican food in the area. It's quite popular, so if you go during peak times, be prepared to wait. It is an awesome spot for Cinco de Mayo as they have outdoor seating and a tent. Cinco de mayo fell on a Friday this year. It was the first sunny beautiful day that we have had in a very long time. This put me in my happy place! I crave sunshine, warm weather, and patio dining. Their food is amazing here. The service is always friendly. The prices are on par with the quality of food etc etc etc. Definitely check it out.! Cheers!

Yelp
First off fly floating in my ice tea, should have left then. The service was terrible as well as the food. I do not understand why this place is busy? Had to ask the waitress for the check 3 times. There are much better Mexican restaurants out there

Natalie H.

Yelp
Had lunch here for Taco Tuesday . The tortillas were soaked in grease , but the the inside was good . Had to use a fork to eat it . Unfortunately not impressed . Might try again someday .

Judy H.

Yelp
They're all right. Not the best. Seating always feels like I'm sitting on top of everyone. Or squished Like in a sardine can. Booths & tables aren't private whatsoever. Food tastes okay & chips & salsa fairly good. The place just doesn't look or feel clean. Wonder what the kitchen looks like. They're a pretty busy place so I highly doubt they clean anything but the tables. I return here as a last resort usually.

Dave L.

Yelp
Seems like they are losing their touch. Used to have warm chips that we would crave. Now I think they use bagged chips. The chicken Burrazo needed a knife to cut thru the chicken it was so dry and tough even soaked is their watery sauce. The food was not very seasoned as well. I guess things change over time. The service was great and the salsa seemed the same. Not an experience I was expecting. Loved going here often, then moved. Will not try that again for a bit.

Yelp
My husband and I have frequently visited this mexican village location for the past 5 years. We can't relate to any bad reviews that we have seen. While I understand reviews and tastes are subjective, we have NEVER had a bad experience here. The food is extremely consistent, the margaritas are good, and the service is always excellent, and attentive. The dining area and bathrooms are always clean and well kept as well. The owners are also very friendly and welcoming. Anytime anyone asks for recommendations for Mexican food we will always refer them here. Our favorites are the super nachos, beef enchiladas, and chicken tortilla soup.

Mel K.

Yelp
We stopped by for a pre cinco de mayo dinner. We split the Arizonion combo platter, an enchilada, chimichanga, deep fried flour taco, and a burrito. We even finished it up with deep fried ice cream. Everything was simply delicious. Love this place.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite restaurants and we've never been disappointed! Last night there was a bit of a wait, but we hung out at the bar and had a drink while we waited. Absolutely the best house margaritas and food!

Madeline A.

Yelp
to start i would like to say that i've been coming here once a week for about 8 years now. Mexican village has always had a place in my heart. i grew up around the amazing staff that made me feel like family. the staff was definitely an influence in my life as they make me want to be a better more confident person that can accept anyone for who they are. The food is always divine. yes the menu and quality has changed throughout the years but no matter the dish i get it tastes like how i remember it tasting when i was young. Some of my menu favorites: wet burritos fajitas soft tacos rice and beans enchilada verde although i love the food now i really miss the dish that had tortillas layered with spiced chicken, mushrooms, spinach, and lots of cheese (please bring it back). the overall vibe of the restaurant is welcoming and inclusive to all people. over the years ive met and talked to all types of people and they're all connected through their love for the food i love. it is a typical restaurant volume where you can talk freely to your table but also people at other tables when you please. mexican village i love you please never change bc everything is a 10/10

Yelp
This place never disappoints. There's a reason their parking lot is always jam packed for dinner every night. Service is fast and friendly. Food is usually served quickly too and i love that melty cheese on everything lol i noticed last night prices have gone up a bit and they charge an additional dollar for each chip basket refill. Not a big deal because i know every restaurant is dealing with cost increases. Personally i think the food is worth the price. The portions are generous:

Yelp
They are open until 8:30pm, today, it's a Sunday. 20 minute wait for a table. We arrived less than 5 minutes later and now the wait is 45 minutes inside now. We weren't having much luck and were to hungry to wait 45 minutes for the Tex Mex food offerings.

Yelp
We've eaten here several times always been pleased. Probably got 10 to 12 takeout always good would recommend.

Jerry A.

Yelp
My Wife and I went today for dinner. She ordered trio enchiladas, I ordered chicken fajitas and a pina colada - which was NOT good! The food came out fast, the fajita plate sizzled, but no steam. My Wife's enchiladas cheese had already coagulated. There was no flavor on my chicken. It was dry and big chunks. The enchiladas had very little flavor but a ton of cheese. To be honest, I have had better Mexican food at an American restaurant. I have been eating here since 1979. They must be cutting corners. The only good thing was our server Brian. He was nice and attentive. We will not be back. What a shame, as this is not the restaurant it was even two years ago, let alone what made it a staple in the area. The server Brian was the only reason I gave two stars.

Yelp
Love this place. Mexican pizza is the best. Enough for at least two people. Love going here and will go anytime. Service is always good and atmosphere is very nice

Yelp
Omg where do I start... this is my all time favorite Mexican restaurant. It's got a very homey vibe! I believe it is family owned and I always have the absolute best experience every time I come here.

Colton L.

Yelp
Food tasted bland no flavor. You know it's bad when a Mexican won't touch it after one bite best thing was the spicy salsa and we where a group of 6 spent 145$ before tip and I expected atleast a average Mexican restaurant where a went burrito is actually wet with salsa and queso blanco wet cheese not mozzarella lol crazy I wouldn't recommend going it's not worth it id go to tacobell any day of the week before this

Paul B.

Yelp
I've been going to Mexican village for years and have always had excellent service. The quality and quantity of the food has always been superb. The food is always hot and fresh when it is served.

S K.

Yelp
Let me say the restaurant has been here for ever and it is one of our favorite restaurants. My wife and I have been going to this location when van dyke was two lanes. Friendly staff and great food. We have eaten at the one in Detroit also worth the drive.

Bonnie B.

Yelp
Went with 3 friends for lunch on Friday Our food was excellent and service by two young men was exceptional! Love the huge bull head in the room Great experience
google avatar

Leah A.

Yelp
Sunday night we came in as a big party, the margaritas were fantastic! We got Liters of the 1800 silver and they were awesome. Our waitress Sierra was also very nice, and provided us with great service! My personal favorite is the Botonia or the enchiladas I can't decide! My husband loves the fajitas, they also have queso now which we order everytime!

Michael K.

Yelp
I have to say I enjoyed my meal. The service was really good and the ambience was nice, busy but nice.

Yelp
I met a friend who I hadn't seen since before COVID-19 hit for dinner. This was my first time visiting but it definitely won't be my last. The restaurant was definitely operating under social distancing rules. Everyone was wearing a mask when they weren't at their table. The hostesses were doing a good job of making sure there was not a group gathering at the door like I'm sure was the practice pre-pandemic. The chips and salsa were nice and fresh. It was so nice that there was one hot and one mild salsa as my friend and I could each have our own salsa and only have to share the chips. The drinks came out exactly as ordered. And our waiter kept our water full as well which has not always been the case at restaurants in my experience. I took my friend's advice on what to order. Enchiladas Suizas was amazing and giant. I was able to take leftovers home for lunch the next day. Unlike pre-pandemic, I'm sure, you put your own leftovers in the to-go box which is fine. Our waiter did a very good job of making sure our drinks stayed fresh, our chips stayed full and our meals came out hot without hoovering over us. I will definitely be back.

Michael E.

Yelp
Great food, good prices, the taco tray is the best option with four of more people. Friendly service, awesome vibes.
google avatar

Tracey B.

Yelp
Service is always pretty good. The last time I was there I had the taco salad. Not good at all. They just need to try a little harder to make it decent. Like not using ice berg lettuce and mushy chicken. Add beans and use shredded chicken or beef with mixed greens. Its truly not that hard.

Emily G.

Yelp
Honestly shocked they don't have higher ratings. This place is a staple favorite for my family. We've been going here for years, the food is outstanding. The service is always impeccable, drinks and chips refilled without asking every time we've gone. You have to try the beef chimichangas with cheese on top.

Dominic P.

Yelp
While we were waiting the bartenders were wonderful and fast. Both ladies were positive and super nice. When we were seated great meal. My niece spilled a huge drink Allisia was quick to clean it. We were so apologetic and she was so nice. Felt horrible and she was great. Couldn't be nicer. Our server Brian was fast and efficient. This place always does a good job. Shout out Alissa and Brian thanks for making the night good.

Yelp
I was impressed that the kitchen was able to get our food out so quick during lunchtime and that it tasted so good! For $6.75, I got two chicken enchiladas with a double portion of rice (not a fan of beans). The rice was fresh and flavorful - it didn't taste like packaged, instant rice. The chicken inside was moist and seasoned well. It was topped with a delicious tomato-based sauce and cheese. I appreciate the use of corn tortillas here instead of flour. We also got complimentary chips and salsa at our table, which were also very good. They refilled the chips and salsa when they were depleted. Although this place is a bit far for me, I'd definitely want to come back at some point to have more of their delicious food!
