The 12 Iconic Dishes of the American Heartland | Eater

"A restaurant chain credited with inventing Arkansas’s signature melty cheese dip in 1935; the state version typically starts with processed American cheese and is jazzed up with additions like Ro-Tel or chili sauce to create a creamy, mildly spicy dip served with tortilla chips." - Eater Staff

Google
There's a reason they have been around for a long time. I don't get to Little Rock very often and decided it's been years since I ate here. Mon, I've been missing out!! The food was super hot and fresh as I remember it. No skimpy portions here, they serve you a meal. Matter of fact, I have a snack for this afternoon. I ordered the Superb Burrito Dinner and it was loaded. The rice and beans were cooked and seasoned right. I couldn't miss out on ordering punch and cheese dip. That was where my eyes got too big. That cheese dip, salsa, and chips will be for later. The beans were creamy, flavorful, and stole the show. My server was friendly and efficient which are both critical to me. She made sure my order was correct and I had the setup. Unfortunately, too many food places are in too big a hurry to do the job right. Why aren't there more locations? I'm not sure but Taco Bell needs to take some notes because this food is on point.

Google
The food is always good let me say that first. I went today and ordered food . The punch I received was red water..when I called back and told them " He replied it does taste like wate!" No response only silence..their customer service is horrible

I grew up going to Mexico Chiquito, even as far back as Protho Junction. We have moved away and it’s been about five years since we’ve gotten food from here. But over the years the cheese dip has never changed, and it was wonderful. They have played with the recipe and it is definitely not an improvement. So very sad.

Steve Riggs

Google
Their Cheese Dip is a MUST!!! Every time I’m in town, it’s on my list.

Alex Wit

Google
The food is always a hit but the employees are SO rude. Drove an hour to get here, they forgot our salsas, put tomato’s on a cheese quesadilla & then made my husband stand outside for 20 minutes waiting on the salsa & correct quesadilla. Then had the audacity to say we should have told them no tomato’s, mind you, we come here at least once a month & have NEVER had tomatoes on the quesadilla. This was all AFTER they were extremely rude during the ordering process & the manager was standing by. Won’t be back.

Google
I haven't had this in several years (at least 15 years) and my wife has never had. They have the best queso to me and I haven't been able to find a Mexico Chiquito due to moving out of state and the ones I use to go to had closed. I've always talked about their queso to my wife. We were in the area and looking for something to eat. I saw this place got excited. We eat a lot of Mexican food as you can probably tell if you follow my reviews and my wife is a much tougher critic than I am. I was nervous about the food not being as good as it was several years ago and her being disappointed after talking about this place since we've met. Fastword to us finally sitting down and eating... She was impressed and the food was awesome. She said is one of the best if not the best Mexican food she's had. She actually ate all of her food. She normally have leftovers when we eat out. I had to stop her from eating all of the queso so I could have some. I should have trusted my gut, no pun intended, and ordered separated queso for us. Now one of the important things to me is cost. I'm a cheap person and I feel the food should match the price. Their pricing is customer friendly for the taste and the portion sizes.

Google
2 stars because I like the punch and they have great salsa. Unfortunately they left my salsa out of the bag as well as taco sauce. Ruins the meal when they screw up your order.

Tonya Chandler

Google
They don’t even deserve one star. We ordered 4 gallons of cheese dip (over $300) for our daughter’s wedding (taco bar). Everyone who ate it at the wedding got sick. When we called they would only say that no one else had complained. It was a nightmare!

Yelp
Came here just for the nostalgia, I used to eat here a lot in college. Definitely not the same! The food wasn't hot, the tacos were bland, honestly taco bell tacos probably have more flavor but the cheese dip (was lukewarm) and the fruit punch were really good! The outside could use a bit of work, the service was ok.

Lamont W.

Yelp
Terrible Service, Long Drive Thru Lines, Employees Don't answer the drive thru call box in a timely manner. Waited over 40 minutes for food from a drive thru! Never again!

8 8.

Yelp
They have sold the same food since the 1930's. I love it. I only wish they were open 24/7 with instant delivery the people saying bad food or crap probably work for taco bell LOL

Yelp
I don't care who don't like this place or complains about it . I LOVE it . I haven't had anything except cheese dip, chips and punch from this location but it's the only one left and I will continue to drive from Jacksonville area to this place for my childhood memories . My grandma used to take me to the one on Prothro Junction in the 60's , 70's snd ,80's . As a you g adult I also visited the one on Camp Robinson . Through the years I have tried to make this dip using 20 different recipes and none of them come close to actually coming here to pick it up . This was the first thing on my mind when moving back here recently. And bet I got dip and punch every time I came to Arkansas.

Wendy G.

Yelp
A nostalgic favorite this place serves Tex Mex old style . Brown sauce chili and delicious ground beef tacos that can be bought by the 6 pack . Steak chimichanga is good . The cheese dip is the star yellow ,cumin and garlic infused with a seasoning that can't be copied . The stuff is addictive it is the original cheese dip of the cheese dip capital of the world( North little Rock) . The chips are house made and thin and compliment the dip so nicely . Prepare to wait in line at the drive through order window . The combi #3 is my fav 2 tacos, a cheese dip and drink .upgrade to the stand out fruit punch with pineapple and and fruity deliciousness for another 1.00 total cost around$17 . If you are traveling this is a must destination experience . If you are local don't forget you can by larger amounts for parties etc , Little Rock location is only one open now drive through only . Picnic tables outside $-

Yelp
Drive thru, bitchy overworked employees and a lazy white boy (me)... that makes for a bad togo order, unless time to think it through is given. The food was way overpriced. Small portion of the sopapillas for way to much money.

William R.

Yelp
I've gotten severe food poisoning from this location twice now. There won't be a third time.
google avatar

Yelp
Thank you Mexico Chiquito for bottling your punch. That stuff is nectar of the Gods! We visited our hometown recently and were able to bring back several large cheese dips and fruit punch to introduce to the family. What a precious taste of home! The world's first cheese dip and amazing Mexican punch!
google avatar

Yelp
You need to hire people who can hear and understand what it means when someone orders a meat only taco. Due to the fact that this place 1 hour round trip, I will never b disappointed by this place again and will never see the disappointed on my child's face again because this place hires people that don't want to be there. I could see it in their faces. 2/9/22 pm

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Best cheese dip and salsa in town! Wished we could still walk into one and sit down instead of a drive through.
google avatar

SR B.

Yelp
Order meals and 2 large punches with no ice. Gave them with ice (took them back during COVID-19 epidemic) then gave me 2 with no ice but not filled ... a 1/4 empty when addressed the matter, they say that they don't fill the cups if given without ice.. really??? this is truly horrible service. I've never had an establishment do something like this degrading I won't be coming back
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
Love this place!!! The beef burrito has amazing flavor, the chicken burrito as well!! The tacos are great too!!! I got the chili cheese nachos, they didn't seem big enough, and the chips were a bit soggy from being smothered, but the taste was excellent!!!! Having tried all four of those items as a first timer to this business, I can't give it anything less than 5 stars!!! The drive through might take a while, but give them a break, good food takes a little extra time!!!

Laura R.

Yelp
Yummy veggie tacos!!! Also their cheese dip is always delicious! Great option for a vegetarian
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
This used to be the go to place for Mexican in Little Rock back in the day. Now it's just a drive-through. I went the other night thinking it would taste like it did when they had restaurants. What a disappointment. Got a six pack of crispy tacos which was Soso. Their salsa it's not the same as it used to be. And their original cheese dip which used to be my favorite Just didn't taste the same
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the changes that have been made to the salsa, chips and cheese dip. We have been loyal customers since the 90's but this is not good anymore
google avatar

Markie A.

Yelp
This place has fantastic food!! If a 5 minute interaction with staff completely ruins your experience than maybe you got more problems in your life than just that. The staff isn't super enthusiastic but my food is always correct and good. The chicken flautas are the best I've had in the country so far, I can't get enough. The cheese dip that comes with them is absolutely killer. Great guac and chips. Enchiladas weren't too bad either. Rice and beans good. And the chicken quesadilla was good too. Definitely worth a try
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know how to "star" this. We were sitting at the window picking up our order and the two front girls had long hair in micro braids loose bouncing in and out of a Togo plate that was still being prepared. It would happen as the girls were busy doing their jobs... it wasn't intentional but still who wants hair in their food or their hair in food.... it's a no win either way.... the hair should be at least tied up in a loose scrunchie in the back to prevent this... I'm gonna vote no hair in food ... no hair in food
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
Horrible staff! I went through the drive through and the woman got my order wrong. Not by much, just not what I ordered. I corrected it at the window when I noticed and she started screaming to her boss that "she knew what I heard, he's a liar!" I said I didn't even care about paying for a $1.50 flauta they accidentally charged me for. No big deal, nothing to get upset about. She closed the window and started yelling to her boss about what a dumb white a**hole I was. I said "you know I can hear you through the window, right?" And she laughed at me and said "yeah I know." Management, you have a REAL issue with employees. I didn't even eat my food because I honestly can't trust that something wasn't done to it.

Ralph M.

Yelp
This was the second time I've done the walk up window. A guy said you can do walk up, just not right now. The drive through never has more than one lane open and service is extremely slow. Once you get in line, you're stuck. Not sure why I keep trying this place.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Good food. Horrible employees. They mumble and have an attitude when you can't hear them. Y'all need some happier workers. People that are happy to have a job. Just my opinion
google avatar

Seamus O.

Yelp
Don't listen to all these whiny reviews. Mexico Chiquito is a Little Rock classic! The cheese dip is probably the best in Arkansas. The fruit punch is amazing and I don't even drink fruit punch. The tacos are classic Tex Mex. I suggest getting a chicken chimichanga and dipping the whole thing in a large cheese dip for each bite :)
google avatar

J R.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. They are extremely unprofessional. They don't answer the phone when you call, they won't come to the window when they're STARING AT YOU FROM THE INSIDE because they are extremely lazy workers and don't want to do their jobs. It is ridiculous. They all need to be fired.
google avatar

Kailey M.

Yelp
I'd put ZERO stars if it allowed. My husband come home without any of his food he ordered so I called to ask if they could hold so he could come back and get it. The lady that answered the phone proceeded to hang up on me after I explained what happened. Called back and spoke to the manager who claimed no one hung up and I called the wrong number. Walked up to the window for my refund and even after showing my call log the manager continued to say i was mistaken. Anyways, save your money and go to a better restaurant with good customer service. Highly recommend El Palenque as they are fast and great customer service!
google avatar

Sandy W.

Yelp
I love their food. Employees can be mouthy but as long as I get what I bought it is just okay. As far as employees go you get what you pay for.

John D.

Yelp
Horrible Staff! refused to serve me because I pulled up to order (after 10 minute wait) too late because they "closed at 8:45: website says they close at 10! Guess manager decided she had enuff for the evening and I went home hungry.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
A mediocre Little Rock institution that has been around as long as I have -- for almost 50-years. But, cheap tacos make it the closest thing to a Tex-Mex (not Mexican) food truck without wheels. If you want Mexican, the taqueria truck in Colonial Wine and Spirit's parking lot is far superior. But, if you want cheap taco's and other quick gut bombs, here ya go.
google avatar

Kristi C.

Yelp
The cheese dip is awsome has a bit of a chili base but not it's not hot. At lunch time you can get a great deal. I strongly urge you to try their punch which is pineapple based with other fruit juices. You get chips and salsa with every order. Trust me try this Tex-Mex... Seriously.
google avatar

Jesse S.

Yelp
This will probably be the last time I'm sure Mexico. Chiquita will be open when I visit little Rock again. OK every thing about this restaurant is going to hell. This use to be one of the most important spots of most of the trips for all of us. Use to be. The girl at the register with the mustache that was neatly shaped got angry because we ordered a drink. Several times we said hello and she could not stop scratching her head under the hoodie to take the order. Order then she tells us to drive to front. After 20 minutes the person the slow mentally acting lady brings out the food and its short. She said it was then she tried to convince me to take a drink and I already paid for one. It's time because NONE of them want to work ANYMORE. I sadly say CLOSE IT BECAUSE NO ONE THERE WANTS IT TO BE OPEN.
google avatar

Jack D.

Yelp
Absolute best cheese dip in the world!!! And the chicken fajitas are the best in town!! Their salsa and punch are top notch as well! Put 'em all together and you better bring a wheel barrow to roll out to the car!! Five stars just aren't enough!!!
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
I wanted to try this restaurant to see how good the food is... The food is OK but the people that work here are extremely rude... The only thing they said after receiving the food was Yep... No smile, no hello how are you, no nothing... So this is my first and last time coming here...
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
The cheese dip at Mexico Chiquito is my favorite. Unfortunately the drive-through line is VERY long.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
They forgot my salad on a to go order... Got back to hotel and they won't answer the phone to let them know.. drive thru worker was also quick with me and rushed the order
google avatar

Courtney J.

Yelp
Sadly I have to agree with most of the recent reviews. I love this place but the service has gone to hell. The staff is rude when you place your order and they ignore you when you're at the service window. The food I've received lately has been as good as in the past but it's hard for me to justify spending my money here when I can go down the road to Tacos for Life or Taco Bueno which also have drive thrus.
google avatar

Davie H.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. Love the chicken fajita wrap with a fruit punch. I stop here on my way to the gym. All these haters doesn't keep the line from dying down. Still not as long as chick-fil-a and so much better =p

Jenn X.

Yelp
The staff are horrible and check your order in the drive thru. This being said know it for what it is, huge portions and cheap food. Great cheese dip and fresh chips w the best punch to drink. It's a gut bomb and when I'm in the mood for fast food a favorite.
google avatar

Darrian D.

Yelp
I literally HATE this place. If there tacos weren't so damn good...thank God I can just go to the one on highway 10

Dawn K.

Yelp
The staff is rude, the salsa is bland tomato sauce, food was not good and the order had missing items. The cheese dip was the only thing worth eating.
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
Girl at window wasn't too friendly, took my money, returned change wrong..didn't ask if I needed anything, and proceeded to go to other window to help next guest. I ordered 3 beef tacos a small cheese dip and she told me the total before I could tell her what to drink.. I got two tacos two small cheese dips and a fruit punch. It wasn't worth going back and arguing to be, $8 worth of food that I will eat (taste is good) but will not be returning.
google avatar

Deb M.

Yelp
Used to be that Mexico Chiquito was the place to eat in the late 70s and early 80s (out in Prothro Junction and in Jacksonville). Great chimis and the cheese dip and salsa were great. Anymore it is just ok. If you want mexican, there are much better choices.
google avatar

Nichole M.

Yelp
This girl working this window is rude! At the intercom, I placed my order as follows; a chimichanga dinner, 6 pack of tacos and a medium cheese dip. She informed me that with the 6 pack, you can get a large cheese dip for $4, so I got it. I get to the window, she repeats my order and gets it wrong. I correct her and she gets an attitude, and says ugh, then proceeds to tell whoever the correct order. She then asks what kind of chimichanga I want, I say beef and she says ugh again. Horrible service.
google avatar

Jayde U.

Yelp
still waiting for yelp to allow ZERO stars! Rude staff got hung up on 3 times! The woman who took our order was RUDE and not attentive. We placed SIX separate orders and she messed 3 of them up, one of the orders was a bean burrito with cheese sauce, we got a 3rd guacamole salad was charged $10+ and no bean burrito. A guacamole lunch special was ordered and charged we only received the salad not the rest of the combo. Finally, my meal was a simple mini chimi, small guac, and chicken flauta, my order was correct but my card was charged 2 bean burritos and one large cheese sauce, when I called to complain that my card was overcharged the RUDE man on the phone told me it wasn't their fault but the person who came to pick up the order. I went to all 5 of my coworkers to look at their receipts to see if someone paid for my meal and I paid for theirs and NO I must have paid for another customers meal that was not with my party because aside from the incorrect guac salad meal and bean burrito NO ONE paid for a small chimi, small guac, or flauta...so I tried to explain that to the RUDE man and he said don't take it up with me it's not our fault! YES it is and now I'm out $5 for food I didn't order. My lousy small guac, chicken flauta, and small chimi cost me $11, my bill should have been $6 max?!?! And the food is awful at that, will never order from them again and will advise everyone at my employer 100+ employees to NEVER order from here again!

Shawn L.

Yelp
Great punch, we buy it by the gallon! Food is good, it's pretty consistent. What is lacking is the customer service. No have a nice day, thank you, enjoy your food. It's more of a what do you want, it's $$$, and here's your food. Will visit again. Just know that they aren't the nicest.

Brittany M.

Yelp
The food is good but the staff is terrible. If you don't like your job find a new one.
google avatar

Ann V.

Yelp
This place gets one star for the polite gal that let me know not to use the passenger drive-thru lane. the lane I went to had a gal working that apparently didn't like dogs. That's fine, but you should then get someone else to handle this sale, not pull your hand back, scream "Uh-huh, no way...no dogs...you get your dogs back" I'm sorry...my dogs are used to great treatment at drive-thrus...regardless, you practically dropped my money, made me lean way out of the car to hand it to you, shoved my food at me and when I said, "it's okay not to like dogs" you immediately snapped back with "WHAT? DID YOU JUST SAY I NEED TO LIKE DOGS?" then slammed my food at me and the window shut. The taco salad I got was awful. A runny beefy cheesy like substance over soggy chips. for $8 with a drink. I threw it out when I got home.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
The service here is not so hot. Mostly bored-looking people who act like they'd rather be getting a colonoscopy than handing you chips through a drive-thru window. The cheese dip is good; yellow cheese dip is certainly harder to find these days, and Mexico Chiquito has always done it well. However, if you're craving it, I'd head to the Cantrell location and have a sit-down meal in a nicer environment.
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
Will never go back to this location they left my sons food out had to go back 15 minutes later and they didn't want to give it to me REALLY you left it out I had to come back the guy figured out maybe he should give us our food as his manager hid behind something and all you could see his arm handing the guy the food not Cool we asked for the manager and he hid like a 2 yr old letting his worker deal with it. Love the food but go to the one on Cantrell much better people we all make mistakes I work with the public and we all make mistakes but you still try to help them and at least say you are sorry instead of getting mad when you knew it was left out since it was cold when you finally gave it to me

Kristyna G.

Yelp
Best cheese dip in Arkansas! Seriously my favorite Mexican food. I travel back to Arkansas from Texas just to eat here.

Michael B.

Yelp
Consistently terrible customer service. Wasn't sure if I should write this review or call the suicide prevention hotline because the employees here are some of the most miserable, unhappy people on Earth. You won't be treated like a customer but more like a huge burden for even the simplest request. Worse customer service than the Soup Nazi and their food is not good enough to make up for it in this case.
google avatar

Tina M.

Yelp
Friendly customer service but not my type of food when it comes to Mexican cooking. Cheese dip average, salsa average, chips average. Beef barely seasoned but edible. I'm still on a search to find some really good authentic Mexican food.
