Where to drink margaritas in Denver | Eater Denver

"This bright Colfax bar offers margaritas along with a daily happy hour, live music, and patio seating. The ancho margarita and mezcal margarita are a couple more flavorful takes on the house version." - Camila Navarrette

Great food , amazing service and variety of music ranging from Shakira to Gipsy Kings , cute and cozy spot. We had steak and shrimp fajitas and street tacos! Huge and juicy shrimp, perfectly cooked steak and everything was super fresh. Very delicious chips and salsa. We will definitely be back .

Google
Food was good and not too much, which was great to not have leftovers or have a food baby. BF is a pickier eater and harder to please than I am, but he really liked his Carne de res Burrito with green Chile. I had Chile Rellenos and ate all of it. They have Negra Modelo - yay! Both hostess and our waiter were too young to tell us who the celebrities were in the photos in our booth. Cool place. They have a whole tequila only menu, with 3 shot flights and some shots costing $39. I'd definitely return.

Google
Great atmosphere, great food and the best margaritas. I had the shrimp tacos and beans. It was really good. Service was great as well. 👌👌parking could be challenging.

Google
Some of the best Mexican I've ever had. Love their Taco special, but the new menu kind of sucks (especially the happy hour quesadilla "deal") but I'm glad they finally have BEER on DRAFT. Amazing food, good service.

Google
My family ordered DoorDash from this place, only to find out they don’t allow comments or modifications—so we had to call just to ask for no cheese. The first order arrived, and every single item had cheese. We called again and reordered everything, only for the second order to show up with cheese on everything yet again. After a third call, we got absolutely no help and nothing was done. Complete waste of time and money. They also hung up on us!!

We sat outside and had to fetch the waiters twice. The food was decent. While we were happy with our meal we were not excited about it either. My mezcal cocktail was nice. Overall, the food is good but standard for Mexican food restaurant in Denver.

Google
Fun vintage vibe with authentic charm. The atmosphere is always very friendly, with a stellar staff. Great margaritas, and flavorful, delicious Mexican food. It’s a local gem in Congress Park

Google
Our favorite spot for the best street tacos, fantastic margaritas, and authentic salsas. Bartender shared with us that their pineapple margaritas are made with tequula infused with pineapple, in-house! I *dream* about the margarita and salsas, often... Overall an absolute gem in Denver.

Yelp
I had to come back here and update my previous review for Mezcal on Colfax. It's been over two years since my husband and I have been there due to a terrible experience with both wait staff and food but we decided to give them another try as we had an event in that area over the past weekend. They did not disappoint this time! The food was amazing, it was how it was when we went for the first time ever and the staff were all friendly, professional and had the food out in no time. Our waiter was also great and he even double checked with us on the dairy because we ordered all veggie options. We will absolutely make this our pre concert spot again and I highly recommend the Los Nachos.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a couple of years, despite living nearby, so decided to check it out. Pro tip #1: The Wednesday BOGO margaritas are not two margaritas, but one tall one. And it doesn't apply to any margaritas except for the house margaritas, which are just as bad as I remembered. Server didn't mention BOGO limitation until after I ordered a coin version. Pro tip #2: I didn't see it advertised on their website, but they do have a limited happy hour menu. We didn't end up ordering food, other than chips and salsa Verde, which was pretty tasty. Server did come back quite a few times to see if we wanted to order food or more drinks.

Yelp
The enchiladas was way too spicy plus they didn't give me chips . I'm not coming back here this restaurant was in Erie Colorado

Yelp
This place was so yummy!! Crazy good margaritas and some of the best nachos I've ever had. I would return for sure. Beautiful decor too.

Yelp
The online ordering process was a bit confusing but the tacos were good and the flour tortillas for the tacos were AMAZING! You could tell they were fresh! We got the carne asada which was okay- which there was more seasoning on the meat but they were cooked great and not dry or chewy! The Al pastor was great and the green salsa on it was sooooo good! The carnitas had a great sauce on them too and barbacoa taco had a mango salsa! It was nice they all had different toppings and worth each bite! The queso dip was really good and was NOT spicy and had good flavor. We also got the salsa rojo and it was fresh and refreshing and they didn't skimp out on the tortilla chips either! Will order again for sure!!

Yelp
Best meal I've had in a while! I enjoyed the service, we were greeted, seated, and served promptly. The decor was eclectic and culturally aligned for lack of better words. I had the ceviche (not picture), dos combinaciones (included chile relleno, chicken tinga tostado, carne enchilada), and a glass of cranberry juice. All of it was delicious! It was flavorful and filling.

Yelp
My partner and I love Mezcal! The staff has gotten to know us and when we sit down, they immediately know what appetizer and drinks we want. They're SO kind and friendly. The tacos are delicious and a great size - no bells and whistles, just great flavors. We have brought friends and family and hope this place stays a long time.

Yelp
Friday night, 8pm. Not busy, soccer game on. Servers are very friendly albeit absent. Our drinks were empty twice and we had to wait for the bill and a box for quite a while. The food is quite delicious, the red sauce has a little bit of spice (I prefer mine hot, but my company likes it mild -- was a good balance). The carne asada was good and flavorful. The salsa is better than average and the chips are thin, hot and crispy. Definitely very authentic looking and homey, the decor is cute and the location is good for downtown. Overall a good experience even if the service was a little bit lacking.

Yelp
Westworld Magazine posted an article in 2016 and listed this restaurant on the top 10 restaurants on East Colfax. So many of those restaurants listed in the same article have closed over the years. Its a testament to Mezcal they are still around and still making good food. Ambience. Good There was plenty of seating inside and on their patio when we arrived. Decided to sit on the patio and made for great East Colfax people watching. Smoking isn't allowed on the patio but smoke does blow over from the neighboring establishment. If you don't want to smell smoke, you should eat inside. Food: Excellent Very manageable menu and has something for everyone. We ordered th #2 combo which included a Chili Relleno, Chicken Tostada and Beef Enchilada. You have your choice of beans (refried or black) on the tostada and the type of sauce (red or green chili) on the chili relleno. We also ordered the taco platter which comes with choice of 3 tacos (Street Taco style). You can't go wrong with any of the choices but the Carne Asada was our favorite. Drinks: Excellent The Mescal Margarita was excellent if you enjoy mescal. Also ordered the house margarita. They use fresh ingredients the amount is perfect for the $12 price. Friendly staff and great food makes this my go-to mexican restaurant in the future.

Yelp
I haven't been here in years and stopped in last night and so glad I did! Still the same cute place with excellent food! I ordered the street taco platter that comes with 3 tacos, beans and rice. We also had the shisito peppers (so good, but some of the definitely have a spicy kick!!) The chicken tinga are my go to, and never disappoint. Also tried the fish tacos! The coconut pineapple marg is the best !! Definitely recommend. Their Taco Tuesday and happy hour deals are awesome, but even their normal menu is priced fair!

Yelp
Loved it! In this platter I got the veggie taco, carne asada taco & fish taco. This was a mobile order and the packaging and speed of service was great! Overall great experience with my food, very tasty and the portions were wonderful as well!

Yelp
We were a party of 7. Everyone liked their food. All good dishes, taco plates, the salad was plenty fresh and delicious. Folks liked the Korean pork belly taco! I had a chicken linga, delivered cooks. Food reasonable. Service excellent! Would recommend. Great vibe. Parking on side street and outdoor seating available. Authentic home cooked style. FYI. If you find a tourquoise necklace please contact me.

Yelp
Strong drinks and yummy street tacos. Got the Colfax Paloma (tequila vs grapefruit forward flavor). Nice atmosphere, pretty mural. Great service.

Yelp
I loved this spot so much! Everything tastes really good. I brought my brother and boyfriend and they loved it as well. We had great customer service and our food came out pretty fast. No long wait At all. I live in another state and was excited to try a new place. I'll definitely be coming back once I visit again.

Yelp
Wanted to stop somewhere on Colfax for Mexican food glad we did! Michelada mix yummy. Good ingredients! And ambiance is nice!

Yelp
Our lunch bunch of four added one member today. Our adult daughter, who lives outside of the US, loves Mexican food. We heard that Mezcal was just that. East Colfax is unfamiliar territory to us, but we found street parking midday to be plentiful. Not a single other soul was there when we entered. We were shown to a nice, bright table by the big windows. The tables were covered with brightly colored Mexican print table clothes. This added to the authentic atmosphere. The first thing we noticed on the menu were the Molcajetes. A terrific description by our serves, Matt, had us convinced that we should have this dish. Our friends decided on the big nachos platter. Our daughter had pork belly tacos, Barbados, and Asada tacos. Before all these main courses arrived, we shared a flight of salsas with chips. All of the salsas are authentic and made in house. Our experience with Molcajetes come from one restaurant in Durango, which was excellent. But, when this dish arrived to the table radiating the heat from the vessel to those nearby, I could see the vast amounts of meat in the bowl. The meats were chicken, shrimp, chorizo sausage, grilled poblanos peppers, and grilled cheese. This steaming medley was served with flour tortillas, or corn, rice and beans. The tomatoey sauce was flavorful, not spicy. The big nacho platter was shared by two as a main course. It looked nicely covered with cheese, guacamole, and sour cream. Our daughter said the pork belly taco was the best ever. She also relished the other two varieties. There is no need to keep hunting for authentic Mexican food when you have Mezcal!

Yelp
Always a great spot pre-show party place. Conviently across from The Bluebird Theater with plenty of seating. The food is delish and the staff, very friendly. Taco Tuesday specials! Street Tacos 1/2 off and Taco Platter is $9. Ask about the tequila flights!

Yelp
This is our go to excellent Mexican food restaurant, we try to go 3-4 times a month. Planning a group lunch soon. Servers are the best. I would rate the experience 5 Stars

Yelp
My mom, brother and I had a delightful late lunch at Mezcal today. The service was great and the food was delicious. My mom and I had quesadillas and my brother enjoyed the vegetarian taco plate. I used to frequent Mezcal with friends but hadn't been for awhile. Will be back! I particularly enjoy the atmosphere -we spent time discussing Mexico travel ideas.....

Yelp
We tried Mezcal because of location, and because it's my daughter's favorite adult beverage. The children were served before the adults (how great is that?) and the food was excellent. They were open regular evening hours the day before Thanksgiving (yay!). There's a special children's menu, real street tacos and other excellent dishes. The service was prompt and attentive, despite there being very few other customers so close to closing (empty tables usually = slow service, and not even the staff can figure that out). This is truly a tequila and mezcal place: the only beers on offer are Mexican imports (no draft beer at all) and a choice of house red or white wine. This is a good choice for anyone who enjoys northern Mexican food with an amazing number of tequilas and mezcals.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food. Casual and atmosphere. Friendly and quick service. Great happy hour and taco Tuesday

Räbbït T.

Yelp
Upon arrival I was surprised to see an empty room but once we got seated and our order taken, everything came out as one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at. The service was fast, the food was amazing and the vibes are immaculate!! I'd definitely recommend stopping here if you're traveling through Denver!
google avatar

Mariah K.

Yelp
This place was so delicious! They have so many street taco options, I went with the chicken and fish tacos and the fish taco's were so flavorful! We shared the nachos as well with no add on's and they were absolutely delicious. They don't have any Jarrito's so that was a bummer but I ordered a Sierra Mist. Friendly and attentive service and there's a lot of cute shops around! Highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
Popped in for Brunch and enjoyed every second of it! The food was tasty and the portions were large! Drinks were great as well! Can't go wrong with bottomless mimosas!! I do wish they would give you a carafe but you're allowed to switch up flavors when they brunch you a new glass. You can sit outside and enjoy sunny days while enjoying some delicious food! I definitely look forward to coming here again! Thank you to the staff for everything!!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here last night and the food was amazing. It was still pretty right out of the box. We got the "Combinacion Tres" which is a massive burrito(came in its own container,) a taco and guacamole tostada. Everything was amazing. The vegan Chile was spicy and covered everything. Heaven. Crunchy tostada and the taco was saturated with toppings, birria sauce and a fresh jalapeño. 10/5 stars. Will order from here again.
google avatar

Tracey W.

Yelp
Ambience inside & outside is super cool. We sat outside and our waitress was quiet but nice. We had to go inside and ask for chips & salsa . I ordered chile rellenos and they were delicious!! The peppers were a good size, cheese melted all the way through, lightly breaded, fried but not overly oily!! Yayyyyy! My daughter ordered a chicken burrito with the vegetarian sauce. It was sooooo spicy, almost inedible. With something SO spicy, I feel there should be a heads up!! And for the record, we have zero problem with spicy! This was unbearable!
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
The good stuff: house Marg, guac, and salsa. That salsa is truly delicious. Smoky and slightly spicy. The guac was good, too. That house margarita was delicious! No pre-made mixes here! The tacos were meh. The meat in both the al pastor and chicken tinga was very dry. I ended up ordering a carne asada taco and while it was the best of the three, the meat was overcooked on this one too. This place wasn't busy at all on a Wednesday evening. The service was good and the food came out very fast! Parking on the first block is restricted to residents, but you can drive up one more block and park easily. Not sure that I'd be back for anything other than a Marg in the future.
google avatar

Yelp
WARNING! Do not patronize this place! Worst food and service in Denver! Scammers and rip-offs. Food isn't fit to eat. Very rude and ugly staff. Prices are too high for the dog food they try and peddle! They sell gift cards then do not honor them. The food and bar is nasty...worst place on Colfax Ave!! Take your money somewhere else, you'll be glad you did! If you saw the kitchen you'll wonder how they even stay open! It's gross and unsanitary. Terrible, horrible place!
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
We stumbled on Mezcal after learning it would be almost an hour wait across the street. We sat outside and had the friendliest server I've experienced in ages! I had a pineapple jalapeño margarita and while it was fantastic I didn't notice a pineapple flavor - just tasted like a house margarita with jalapeño. I ordered Carne a la Tampiquena which was unfortunately served cold. The mole sauce was flavorful but the skirt steak was well done even though I ordered medium - never even ate it because it was so overdone. Excellent service but overall only 2 for the food.
google avatar

Yelp
I have heard so many great things about this place and mehhh. You can see the food in the pics, it was just ok and nothing to write home about. Service was ok I guess. As soon as we sat down we smelled something sour and sweet, we think due to the rag they washed the plastic table cloths with so all I could smell through dinner was these smell. We moved tables and it also had the smell. The meal was ok. I wasn't blown away sadly. Won't go out of my way to come back but would try it again if I was in the area.

Yelp
The charming atmosphere and delightful exterior drew me and my mom in to have dinner here at Mezcal the other night. We walked inside and it was freezing so we decided to sit outside. It was nice out, however, rather sunny. We had a water pitcher brought over to our table with glasses but the water was lukewarm and not cold and refreshing as I had hoped. I ordered the Mezcal Burrito and when it was brought out, I was overjoyed to dig into a large burrito smothered in sauce until I took the first bite and my mouth was on fire. The flavors of the burrito were very good but the spice level of the sauce was extremely high. As someone who is not a big fan of spicy foods, it was rather difficult for me to eat. I understand it is Mexican food, however, there was no indication of the spice level on the menu or warning from our server. I got it with the "Chicken Tinga" and refried beans and had to eat the insides of the burrito that were not touching the sauce it was smothered in. The burrito itself was very tasty but, because of the spice level, it's not something I would get again.

Yelp
Anytime you're spending seventy bucks at lunch for a few tacos and a plate of vegetarian beans veggies and rice, with no drinks other than water, it's time to say to oneself... what are we doing, getting ripped off for food that's simple and not that exciting? The best part though was the salsa. Adios!

Blake K.

Yelp
Mezcal is the best. Good food, good drinks, good service. This is all doubled if Luna is there. Incredibly promot service, excellent drinks, quick delicious food. We try to go there whenever he is working. 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Best Al pastor tacos I've ever had in Denver! The special sauce they have on them is 10000/10. Definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
The good things: Our server was very nice and efficient & I like the location. We've come here a few different times over the years and it's a good vibe. The bad things: We ate here 1 year ago and I said "never again" but somehow I'd forgotten that the food was horrible so we tried it again with the thought that maybe it was just a bad night. I was wrong. The food was just as bad as the last time we ate here. Effing terrible in fact. Soggy, cold and just flavorless.
google avatar

Mamie C.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with some friends. Everything was delicious. We had the nachos - best ever! Their street tacos were legit and their homemade corn tortillas were yum!! Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Can we just talk about how perfect Mezcal is?! Well, it is! AMBIANCE: Love it! The facade of the building has great bright tile and a sidewalk patio. Inside there's exposed brick, bright painted walls, and the coolest light fixtures. The tables have fun vinyl coverings. There's plenty of little accents throughout! SERVICE: Alfredo was just the best! He checked back with me just enough, gave me great advice on my taco choices, and ensured my drinks were never empty. Excellent! LIBATIONS: I sipped on the ancho margarita, because why not!? It was perfectly crafted with just the right amount of spice. There's plenty of boozy delights available for your choosing - I mean they do feature a full bar after all! SUSTENANCE: Chips and salsa arrived first, complimentary and delish! After browsing the menu and getting Alfredo's expert opinion I ordered three tacos - chicken tinga, barbacoa, and al pastor. While they were all super tasty - I'd have to say the al pastor was my fave. They offer a wiiide variety of street tacos for you choosing, as well as other dishes. Easy to see why Mezcal was such a big hit with me! Def can't wait to return and take advantage of happy hour and brunch! Yay!! **Pro Tip: HH (Happy Hour aka "The Happiest of Hours") is offered daily from 3pm to 6pm!! Yay!!

E M.

Yelp
Food was excellent! I do not recomment the chips and queso, but everything else was sooo good! The restaurant is very nicely decorated and set up. Will definitely be back

Yelp
Popped in before a concert across the street. We sat unattended for a bit too long, but once the bar tender had the opportunity to serve us, he was friendly, our food arrived quickly and was delicious and we really enjoyed our margaritas. We were able to make it to the show on time and had a very nice street taco dinner.

Yelp
Mezcal is a gem of a restaurant. Its ambience, cleanliness, friendly and efficient staff and hands down, fresh authentic amazing food. We come regularly for pastor tacos (which are the best in town, in our opinion) with a few potential restaurants coming in where we will go just to change it up. Their tinga is unique and flavor packed that is far from dry, my experience everywhere else, the chicken is dry and bland, not at Mezcal! Their asada taco, marinated to perfection and again with a unique flavor that sets it above many other places we have had it. If you like pozole, they do a red, and while you can get pretty good pozole that is quite authentic at a place down on Larimer/27th (it's good, real good for their verde), we always come back to Mezcal for their red pozole. It's packed with flavor, and absolutely delicious to eat, summer, winter, doesn't matter. Chips, light, freshly served hot, and crisp, their fajitas...hands down delish. Will leave it there as the other food reviews shared here, give enough to know you should come here! This family owned establishment welcomes you as you're one of theirs, they take pride in putting their best in service and cook food as if they are feeding it to their most cherished. And your belly will thank you! Oh and you absolutely must sit with Luna at the bar, he is beyond attentive, caring, friendly and funny,if you welcome the conversation, and makes a delish margarita! You come in twice, he will recognize you. Something that was appreciated and special to us, and now we enjoy just coming in to see Luna and the rest of the Mezcal fam.

Yelp
I do not see a way to delete my last review, so I am updating. I had previously stated that the food must be garbage because it was ready so quickly. I apologize for stating this. It was dramatic and unnecessary! The manager did decide to refund my money. But that's not why I updated my review. Having never eaten there decided to try it out in person, i.e., put my money where my mouth was. Allow me to reassure you that the food is NOT garbage. My friend and I ordered margs...multiples, actually. They were very, very good. We ordered guac/chips. Again, wonderful. The guac was spiced properly. It was super creamy and delightful. The chips were warm and tasty. We ordered enchiladas for our entrée. Again, exceptional! Our wait person, Matt, was Uber professional, attentive, and pleasant. Outstanding service on his part. It was 100% a great experience. If anyone knows how to delete a previous review, please let me know. Mezcal certainly didn't deserve that!

Yelp
Taco Tuesday special, hell yeah! Who would have expected a fancy Mexican fusion restaurant to serve $1 street tacos? I decided to try one of each for an amazing, filling $5 lunch. The fresh chips were also delicious and the salsa, while very mild, was also very unique and flavor (though if you don't like cilantro, you will NOT be a fan). The carnitas was my favorite of the five. I also ordered a side of duck fat refried beans because - uh, duck fat refried beans, duh! The Boy, who is quite picky when it comes to Mexican food, was also blown away. The tamale was incredible, the red sauce was delicious. The green chile, much like the salsa, was flavorful if not very hot. He was so impressed by the tamale that he got upset when he learned it wasn't available as an a la carte option. Worth a trip across town. We'll be back in the very near future.

Karli R.

Yelp
Amazing food! The enchiladas and Pozole were on point. The service was great. Very polite. The ambiance great for night out or lunch with friends. Recommend 10/10
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
Very tasty soft tacos. The house margarita at $8 is a bit overpriced, but at least it's not a watered down boozeless concoction like you get at a Chili's. Dollar for dollar, it's A-OK. If it was a little less expensive, I could find myself really liking this place a lot. Good salsa.
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
I will not return to Mezcal. The service took forever, and the food wasn't worth the wait. After being seated, we waited for 20 min for our waiter to bring chips and salsa to the table. There seemed to be a lot of staff, but our waiter seemed quite rushed, albeit kind and apologetic for the wait. I ordered the carnitas, barbacoa, and fish tacos, and found all to be quite under-seasoned and lacking in any flavor. Luckily the restaurant's stash of salt, pepper and cholula sauce was close by, so I was able to salvage the meal.
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
This place is pretty decent. I didn't feel like there was anything spectacular here but definitely had a good time and some good tacos. I went for taco Tuesday and they really have some killer prices on the tacos although even without the special they're still really reasonably priced. My BF and I both had the Chicken Tinga and the Pork Belly tacos and they were both really good. I would have liked to give 3.5 stars if I could because it was good and our server was really nice it just wasn't fantastic to me. Probably need to go back and try more and then update, lol.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
This place is always consistent, never great never bad. Not much flavor or spice to the food. They have a ton of tequila though so guess you can drink away the blandness..... Service was poor for midday with no other customers, my food was made incorrectly.

Dissapointed R.

Yelp
Having been coming here for the last 2 years, it seems to just be going down hill. Every time we go we are reminded why we don't go here. The servers are always sitting down at the bar eating food, they will stop eating to tend to you but never wash their hands. Just spent 39$ on two tacos, a combination plate and coke and chips and salsa. The service is always the same, you walk in, there are dirty tables, the servers are always eating. Just a bad experience everytime. It used to be good.

Yelp
If you're wanting some good Mexican food, you should go here! Although, I was very disappointed with their decor as it used to be way more interactive with Spanish comic books along the walls...that are now covered up. Bring that back!!! It was so unique!!
