Where to Find the Best Micheladas, Cantaritos, and Margaritas in Detroit

"As the name suggests, agave-based spirits have a big presence at Mezcal, which refers to the distilled alcoholic beverage produced mostly in Oaxaca made from 30-plus types of agave. Aficionados can splurge on classics such as margaritas, spicy cantaritos, and on mezcal flights — many of which are sourced from smaller craft distillers. For large groups, the Instagram-worthy La Mezcla Perfecta is a sharable, giant cantarito that, for $110, serves four and uses a full bottle of tequila, grapefruit, lemon, orange juice, and soda." - Serena Maria Daniels

Best Metro Detroit Desserts | Eater Detroit

"This is one of the very few Mexican restaurants in the region that offer a flair of fine dining sensibilities. In addition to its popular birria, tacos representative of several regions in Mexico, and its showstopper aguachile de ribeye, the menu also features a variety of desserts. House-made ice creams come in flavors like avocado or sweet corn, tres leches cake are topped with bits of pretzel, and a pan de elote is accented with house-made whip cream, mazapan crumble, and caramel popcorn." - Serena Maria Daniels

Detroit’s Essential Mexican Restaurants

"Mezcal Mexican Bar & Kitchen has quickly expanded its footprint in metro Detroit, with locations in Ferndale and more recently, Midtown. Diners can expect traditional carnitas, torres de mariscos, birria, and aguachile de ribeye at the Midtown spot, which is more of a fine-dining affair. Both locales carry a variety of tacos, as well as a huge selection of agave-based spirits." - Serena Maria Daniels

We will definitely be back! They have music on Friday evenings

From the moment you step inside, this restaurant captivates with its striking ambiance and confident menu, one that doesn’t just play it safe but dares to take bold, rewarding risks. My wife and I have dined here four times, and with each visit, we leave equally impressed and delighted, continually discovering new layers of creativity and depth in the cuisine. On our most recent visit, at José’s recommendation, I ordered the ribeye, a dish I typically reserve for only fine steakhouses or my grill. To my surprise, it was among the best I’ve ever had: expertly prepared, richly flavored, and paired ingeniously with a bacon-wrapped banana pepper stuffed with mozzarella. The combination was unexpected yet utterly harmonious, a masterstroke of culinary balance. The house salsa deserves special mention; it ranks among the best I’ve tasted anywhere in Michigan, vibrant with freshness and just the right heat. My wife is partial to the elotes bowl and queso, both consistently excellent. As for me, I find childlike joy in deconstructing the empanada, peeling away the crust and dipping it into their velvety guacamole, an indulgent, flavor-packed ritual I now look forward to each time. The bar program mirrors the kitchen’s confidence with well-crafted cocktails and an inviting atmosphere that make it a destination in its own right. In short, Mezcal delivers not just a meal, but a true Mexican dining experience, one that celebrates bold flavors, inventive pairings, and genuine hospitality.

Marcela and Ángel are great at the bar. The food is really good! Enjoyed the drinks too! The carajillo is a must if you like the expresso martinis. Super rico, recomendado. Las salsitas picosas.

This place is amazing, the food was so delicious and our server Angel was a class act. He created the drink I ordered, the Pom-Flower, and it was hands down the best drink i’ve ever had. Give this man a raise!

What’s not to love about Mezcal? Friendly and fast service, zippy cocktails, and delicious food. Our waiter was very nice and checked in on us several times throughout our meal. As we were ordering, he input our order on his device and our Chips Trio came immediately! The guac was okay, but the queso really stole the show. I got the Ella Baila Solo, and the smokiness of the mezcal really showed through, while still balancing the other flavors of the cocktail. I was eating light that night, so I got the Mezcal Soup as my main. The chicken in it was a little dry but nicely shredded and the broth was super tasty. The menu was huge, so we’re looking forward to coming back and trying something new!

Google
I recently dined at this restaurant it was really clean and had an appealing interior, which set a welcoming tone right from the start. The nachos I tried were slightly better than average, though they didn't particularly stand out as memorable. However, the tacos were a different story—they were truly delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed both types that I had. The staff added to the positive experience with their friendliness and efficient service, making the meal even more enjoyable. Overall, the restaurant delivered a pleasant dining atmosphere, great tacos, and commendable service, making it a place I would recommend to others looking for Mexican cuisine in a nice setting.

Yelp
You gotta check out Mezcal in Detroit! This place serves up some seriously tasty Mexican food that'll hit the spot. The vibe is super chill, perfect for hanging out with friends and just enjoying the moment. The staff here? They're the best! Super friendly and always ready to help you pick out something amazing to eat. It's like having that buddy who knows all the cool places and is always up for sharing their favorites. Trust me, the food is bursting with flavor, and you'll be savoring every single bite! So, if you want some delicious eats, a laid-back atmosphere, and a crew that makes you feel right at home, Mezcal is where it's at. You'll walk out with a happy belly and a big grin!

Yelp
Oh how much I wanted to love this place!! Pros -Good Guac -Ambiance (love the vibes) -Good Soy Taco -Good location Cons - Beans seemingly from the can. Please take the time to make flavored refried beans especially for the vegetarians. -Chips that came with nachos were not sturdy enough for the toppings. They broke off very easily. -Chips and salsa are not complementary -Nachos had the option of steak/chicken but there needs to be a veggie option as the meat is more expensive than veggies. -The tortillas for the tacobirria were not cooked long enough to have the crisp it should. -The nachos in the happy hour deal does not come with all the ingredients listed in the normal menu so while it may seem like a good deal, it's actually not a deal at all. It seemed like canned nacho cheese, chips, and pico (Our food came out within 5 min) -The service was not amazing like prior reviews. We had to ask the server about happy hour deals and she told us it ended at 5 (it was around 4:20pm). When I asked if the nachos on the happy hour came with beans and she said I'm sure it does but it did not come with the beans or the guac. We ended up paying the full price of a regular nacho order + and order of guac. -They added an automatic 20% gratuity for a party of 2 which was a little weird to me (normally see this in parties of 6 or more) -Tacobirria order did not come with rice and beans which are items that usually come with a taco order I do love the Ferndale location and the staff there were great too! I would recommend the owners do make some changes because they are rivaling their close neighbors in Mexicantown. Would love to try this place again if changes are made :)

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing--I'm talking next-level tacos and nachos that you just can't miss. The service? Top-notch! Our server was super friendly and everything came out lightning fast. The ambiance is just perfect, especially if you're celebrating something special. I had my birthday bash here with my friends, and it was beyond pleasant. To top it all off, they surprised me with a slice of tres leches cake that was to die for! Highly recommend this spot for any celebration, or even just a casual dine-out or takeout for Taco Tuesday night!

Yelp
The restaurant has a modern Mexican vibe. Food great and the service is excellent. When they first opened the service time was very slow but I'm glad I did not experience that the second time around. The nachos are a must try!

Yelp
Food was delicious. We got the Birria tacos and Fish tacos. The drinks were also good. We got the Old Fashioned and Spicy Paloma. We were surprised this place was empty on a Saturday. I believe the owners should invest in marketing bc this place is too good to not be booked.!

Yelp
Nice Mexican restaurant downtown. Very nice ambiance. The food was really good as was the service. Stopped here Thursday after 1 and it wasn't busy since it was after the lunch rush. I would definitely come back here. It's also right next to the parking garage downtown and across the street there's a parking lot you can park in for a small fee also. Which is a plus because sometimes parking can be a hassle downtown.

Yelp
First, the food is super tasty and they have tamales which is not easy to find. Second, what a FUN place to go! They have dance classes, and it seemed to be free. It was lively, nice couples or singles just stop in to learn various Salsa dancing, etc! Tip: Make reservations if you are going on a weekend. Our wait was about 45 minutes, but it was a Friday night. We almost left but I am so glad we didn't. Everyone seemed to love their drinks, I had a delicious non/alcoholic Strawberry Margarita! The chips were homemade and the salsa was really good. The ambience was so fun, but you could enjoy a nice dinner with friends and still hear each other speak. I can't wait to go back with friends. We parked right in front of the Restaraunt, so very convenient. It was a fin time in the D!

Yelp
Excellent food and service here! We were seated and waited on promptly, even on a Saturday night. The birria tacos were perfect, with a rich flavorful broth to dip them in. I absolutely loved the Al Pastor taco with tender pork, pineapple, onions and cilantro. Probably one of my top favorite tacos now! All the food was flavorful, fresh, and nicely presented. The delicious margarita I had was almost too pretty to drink (but I did, haha) The drinks are excellent but pricey. I would have trimmed $30 off my bill without the two margaritas, and that's probably what I'll do the next time. As good as they were, I'd rather save the money. Nice atmosphere, with a cozy feel. Our server was excellent, and you can pay your check online, which I love because it speeds up the process. I'll be back :)

Yelp
New midtown Mexican restaurant ! It is pretty authentic, price is a little high but u are in midtown so expected. -margaritas where strong -ambiance on a Saturday was fun! Live music (unsure if this happens every Saturday) -plates where smaller portions but good -did not see quesadillas on the menu (but I'm pretty sure they can make some ) -service was nice and helpful -chips and salsa are extra

Yelp
I LOVED the Italian margarita - maybe a little too much. The food was good too. I love that they have vegan/vegetarian options. It is a bit expensive, but what isn't these days. The service was pretty good, but make sure to check your bill because gratuity is included.

Yelp
We stopped in to try Mezcal a new neighborhood spot. As another reviewer mentioned, it was very expensive for mediocre food. The ceviche was heavy heavy lime and cilantro. It was missing so much. The flavor was flat and bitter despite the amount of lime. The texture of the fish was great. The tacos were alright. Everything we ate just felt like it was missing depth of flavor. The service was good however, we asked for more chips for the ceviche, and they never came. The ambiance was fine, but we both thought the music was too loud. 2 drinks, ceviche, and 6 tacos = $80 It's just too much for what we got.

Yelp
Cool place inside and out. More of a cool bar than an authentic Mexican food restaurant. Food was okay at best. Salsa was not that delicious. Service was average, door greeters were friendly.

Yelp
Went for restaurant week and the menu was very nice. There was a $20, $30 and $35 menu. Chose the $20 menu because it was tacos birria and they were delicious. Chips and salsa were also very fresh and good. The Italian margarita was absolutely delish also. Made like a martini not served on ice. I'll be back. Saw other dishes that guest had and they looked good too.

Yelp
We stopped in to try out this fairly new restaurant in midtown. The food was pretty good and so were the drinks. Our service wasn't bad, but it didn't stand out as good either. Our waitress kind of just got the job done. I do think it was a bit pricey considering what we got, so I don't think this will be somewhere we come often, but it was a nice place to try after exploring the city.

Yelp
We visited Oaxaca a few years ago and loved it, so we were really excited to try Mezcal. We only had time for cocktails and apps so we sat at the bar and ordered a Mezcal flight and a Mezcal cocktail. I was so happy to see that they served Mezcal exactly the same way as they do in Oaxaca. The glasses, worm salt, orange slices and fried crickets were exactly like how they were served in Oaxaca. The cocktail was delicious and nicely served too. We ordered the empanada de tinga, which was a lovely crust filled with spicy chicken. Delicious. We also had to try the esquites, Mexican street corn in a bowl since we ate it many times in Mexico. It was spot on. I am really excited to come back to try the full dinner menu after such a successful beginning.

Yelp
Tuesdays are Tuesdays. The only thing that takes the edge off are tacos. Today at Mezcal I had the best taco salad I've ever eaten. The romaine lettuce was cut thin, there was just enough rice, corn and beans so that every bite was perfectly proportioned. And the flour shell was light airy not greasy. Totally perfect.

Yelp
Came for drinks so can't say much about the food. We did get guac which was good. I ordered from their menu drinks ; Rebelde, Siesta, Paloma, and a Carijillo. Very pretty presentation and all tasted awesome. I didn't love the Paloma but that's probably just a personal preference because there wasn't anything wrong with it. I was with 2 other people so 3 in total and sat at the bar they ordered other things but my bill was 4 drinks and the guac ~$65 they did charge 20% gratuity automatically so ~$78 I tipped an extra $10 so my bill ended up at ~$88. I didn't see anything written their menu or posted that its a standard practice to add 20% gratuity, maybe I didn't see it though. I take issue with that solely based on principle. Nice place though.

Yelp
So happy we decided to try Mezcal. Try the BirriaTacos! We'll be back! Service, food, margaritas...all 5 stars!

Yelp
Stopped in here on a Thursday because it was convenient, and we're so glad we did! We chose to sit out in their small patio area. We were promptly greeted by our server. Our server was knowledgeable and helpful with recommendations. We opted for the quesobirria and tacos (chicken, asada, and al pastor.) The quesobirria was the star of the show for us! Give this place a try you won't regret it!

Yelp
From the moment we walked in we just loved it, excellent, excellent service, delicious food there was not one thing that I did not like about this location or their staff highly recommended and we will definitely be going back

Yelp
So extremely delicious! The Mariposa is one of the best cocktails I have ever had in Detroit. Super cute place and very accommodating staff. Would love to bring my fam here some day.

Yelp
I had Nachos. Very nice presentation and the food wasn't bad. I was told just go to the bar. I asked for a table and was sat a dirty table. When I asked for the table to be cleaned the waitress wasn't happy. I don't believe in being rude to anyone who handles my food so I was still nice. She warm up and everything was pleasant afterwards. Service got much better. I don't know if I would come back.

Yelp
The food and drinks were excellent! Margarita was strong and delicious. Service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
First of all Alma made our experience so warm and welcoming!! We're from San Diego and were in search of some authentic Mexican food with a good ambiance and were very lucky and surprised to find everything we wanted here!! Make sure you ask for Alma, she's so friendly and accommodating!! Five stars!

Jordan S.

Yelp
Food was incredible. Spicy, flavorful, filling. Get the California burrito, it's amazing! Chips with quac, salsa, and queso were next level. Even the chips were fresh and spiced. Waitress was kind and helpful.

Yelp
Great Steak fajitas! We try all the new spots and this place did NOT disappoint. Perfectly seasoned, great friendly staff. Mad our entire date night. Get down here and try it!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with a friend; we both had the carne asada tacos which came with a lot of meat but were not super flavorful. Guacamole was good and the cocktails were fine.

Yelp
Tasty food and friendly service. Welcome to the neighborhood! Looking forward to making our way thru the menu.

Yelp
Very expensive. Mediocre food. Don't bother. Mezcal went into the old Savant/Bolero space on Forest. They've made a few slight changes to the interior but otherwise it looks the same as we've known it for years. No chips or salsa are brought to the table as in most Mexican restaurants. If you want them, it will set you back $7. We ordered the guacamole ($10) which was very good. We then ordered a torta and two types of tacos. The torta is made with a "sub bun" and it does not come with anything. No lettuce, no tomato, no onion, etc. You only get the meat and cheese on the bun and no rice and beans. For cost ($15) is double of what you'll pay at most other Mexican restaurants and not as good. We also ordered a beef taco ($4.5) and a puffy taco ($5) which is just a taco which has been deep fried. They both tasted fine but absolutely no different than you can get at any taqueria in SW and again...double the price. They don't even double up the corn tortillas on the tacos. They use only one so they fall apart when you try to pick them up. I know this is the sister restaurant of that on Nine Mile in Ferndale but don't see how this one will last. You can go to nearly any Mexican restaurant in metro Detroit and get better food with larger portions at half the price. Once was enough.
