The Best Mezcalerías in Oaxaca City | Eater

"Brought to you by the owners of Mezcal brands El Jolgorio and Nuestra Soledad, this intimate bar is an excellent s pot to learn about and enjoy mezcal from a kind and attentive staff. In addition to the array of multicolored branded bottles on the back bar, they offer an interesting selection of house mezcales exclusive to Mezcalogia from different communities in Oaxaca, including Matatlán, Santa María Zoquitlán, and Ejutla. At night, there’s often live music from a variety of local acts." - Niki Nakazawa

Google
We had a great experience here with Noe. What started with a Mezcal flight ended with multiple cocktails and a great experience. The atmosphere is friendly, other patrons joined us at the bar and everyone had a good time. Noe faves us recommendations for great local spots off the beaten path. We highly recommend stopping by

Google
Such a fabulous cocktail bar. My friend and I tried two mezcal cocktails and they were delicous. Javier was very attentive - he brought us popcorn to go with the drinks. This intimate bar has gorgeous Oaxacan decor. A great place to try mezcal!

Google
I decided to make a mezcal tasting and had an amazing experience. Javier was explaining a lot, his knowledge was huge. I could learn a lot about this wonderful topic. Thanks a lot!

Google
Short explanation but well done. Great mezcals and tasting of 4oz from 4 different regions (1oz each shot) for only 350 MXP.

Google
Gracias Javier!! My boyfriend and I enjoyed an amazing mezcal tasting (for 450mxn) with lots of interesting facts and delicious mezcal. We came early, it was still empty and Javier really went into detail and explained so much to us. Really worth it!!!

Google
Disappointed by the experience. The drinks were mediocre at best, yet priced as if they were something extremely special. There are plenty of places in the city offering much better quality for far less. This spot feels more like a tourist trap than a true gem—unfortunately, I fell for it. Not planning to return.

I just turned 40 in this bar, very quietly, no one was watching and I didn’t tell anyone. My girlfriend and our child were asleep in our Airbnb. I did the mezcal 102 tasting, and it was wonderful. With each pour, I received an informative description of what I was about to taste, by a bartender who had no noticeable signs of bitterness or fatigue. I only wish I were more fluent in Spanish. I understood enough, we got through it together. The ambiance was perfect, the level of the music was ideal, I’m 40 now, I am aware of these things. I couldn’t recommend this more as a stop for you and your family, as long as your family doesn’t include young children, if it does, I guess come alone, when they’re asleep.

Google
Damn good place to taste a couple of Mezcals. The place is warm and inviting, got a great team of passionate bartenders. They have a decent selection of Mezcal - although not the biggest in town - definitely worthy of a visit. Located in a great area of town with loads of other cool places.

Yelp
We had an enjoyable stop here. The cocktails were well mixed although the whole menu wasn't on offer the night we visited. The bar was busy and the bar itself is small so I think the limited set made sense. It was fun to join the lively crowd for a bit and watch a parade go by.

Yelp
It's an amazing and unique place, small. Focused. Mezcal only with a few mixers. Guitar player the night we were there. Magical! I'd not trade the evening we spent there for 100 other nights in other standard, predictable bars in 100 other places. And that's the twoof!

Yelp
I went here recently and the bartender charged me 345 pesos for one Mezcal. The place is ok but I don't appreciate being ripped off. Be careful.

Yelp
Came in for a drink after seeing the reviews only to realize this is a spot for hipster tourists. They only had ONE cocktail available, a sugary margarita with too much ice. Do yourself a favor and check out La Mezcalerita, a 4 minute walk away. Their mezcal is on point if you want to sip it straight, their cocktails are amazing and not filled with mostly ice, and they have a rooftop terrace.

Yelp
The best mezcaleria i found. Their main line is by Cortez family, my favorite line is Neustar soledad followed by Joyeria just cause it is more expensive. Allowed tasting many, Louise at bar speaks flawless english, maybe as he was in oakland till last month. Good explanation of agave types, ask someone to walk you through. An easy repeat. Tasting mezcal, a general guide. I could not find bars with varied branded collection for tasting. So two options, goto a mezcal shop and if will allow you to get a taste and more if you are buying or goto a local mezcaleria that mezcal makers have a connection to carry their line.

Yelp
Great Mezcaleria with friendly and helpful staff who are able to communicate in both English and Spanish fluently. Their Mezcal selection was fantastic, reasonably priced, and their cocktails were balanced and delicious. Complimentary popcorn is always a nice offering, too. They had a guy playing acoustic music with a mix of 50/50 American/Mexican songs which worked well for the vibe.

Yelp
Very cute tiny little bar! Seating for maybe 20-30 people in the bar, but definitely worth coming to. We stumbled on the bar randomly around 11pm on a Tuesday and it was one of few places still open, and the only one we found that was still lively and busy. The Palomas that we ordered were delicious! So good that I didn't think there was much mezcal in them but I definitely felt them!

Yelp
We had a wonderful time learning about Mezcal and trying a few different styles. The bartender spoke great English and we enjoyed talking with him about Mezcal and Oaxaca.

Yelp
Well, this is embarrassing: we were at this bar 3 out of the 7 nights we were in Oaxaca. It's not that I don't love variety but why drink elsewhere when everything is so perfect here? Victor, the bartender who took care of us on 2 of our visits, took great pains to explain the mezcal we were tasting and really pushed us to explore our preferred mezcal flavours and palates. I walked away that night knowing that a good mezcal, and my preferred flavour, is like a good cigarette: smoky, rich, and full-bodied. The cocktails similarly were really well-crafted- I highly recommend the bizness cocktail (tangy, spicy and strong as ****). Did I mention that Victor speaks fantastic English? Bonus point. Above all, the thing that is really special about this place is the atmosphere. An intimate and sometimes very hot space, you can be left to your own devices for hours with the bartender until suddenly the place is rolling with debauchery, live music, and drunken lovers.

Yelp
We were thrilled to find this gem after being turned away at several restaurants because Christmas Eve dinner was being served (many of them were empty and we just wanted a drink). Anywho, there were two perfect seats at the cozy bar and a talented young man was playing the guitar and singing. My husband requested a somewhat obscure song and the singer played it really well. They served a variety of cocktails, I had the Morenoni and Mercado. Super cute place, though I think it might have been too crammed if every seat had been full. The bartender and the server were both very helpful and answered all of my questions about the drinks. I will have to return to try the gin mescal.

Yelp
Had an amazing evening at Mezcalogia last night. Matt was fantastic and was so helpful in reaching us all about Mezcal. The live music was fantastic and the vibe in the bar was amazing. We'll be back and I highly recommend.

Yelp
I saw reviews for this place and really wanted to go. This is a gringo dive bar with bad drinks. The night I went they had a guy playing 90s American songs. The drinks were very expensive and horrible, and the staff was not helpful. Luckily there is a handful of great spots nearby; There is a Mezcalería with really good stuff called "in situ" nearby with a cool vibe and a guitar player who plays Latin music. If your looking for cocktails "zanduga" makes great drinks, cool design and the staff is really nice and attentive, also just around the corner.

Yelp
By far my favorite bar in town. Small, intimate, and the staff truly cares about you not only enjoying mezcal, but ensuring you're drinking the one you want. They provide samples, if you're confused, and I couldn't have been happier about it. There's a select batch of mezcal I like, and they ensured I got a shot of the right one. Plus, it's really got good vibes, and you'll decently leave with a smile on your face.

Yelp
Fun and lively little bar on the north side of the centro. I've been here a few times now and it's a reliably good spot to take friends. The mezcal selection isn't my very favorite in the city but they have some good ones that are on the less expensive side. The live cover music has almost made me turn away from entering twice but I've gone in each time and enjoyed myself.

Yelp
There are waaay better places to find good mezcal in Oaxaca. The foreign influence (San Francisco) is apparent, as the drinks are pricey (by Oaxaca standards) and had very little, if any, mezcal/alcohol content. My $200 peso drink was advertised as a chocolate drink, and it was a combination of spice and gas. They garnish with chapulines to make it "Oaxacan." We also had an incident where a patron who was clearly drunk followed me to the bathroom to hit on me. Later, we were surprised to see the bartender still serving him, even though he almost passed out in front of her. When I asked the bartender why she was still serving him, she retorted, "Do you want me to answer that?" Additionally, they charge for using credit cards, but of course they don't tell you that until you get the bill, even though we asked about acceptance of cards before sitting down. I regret wasting a night here.

Yelp
Great place to learn about Mescal and enjoy its wonders! Staff is super and spends time with those if us just learning about this nectar. Really enjoyed all the tastings offered and the education. Highly recommend

Yelp
You must visit this cozy bar! Delicious and inventive drinks. In fact, ask the bartender to surprise you with a drink containing your favorite flavors. Super duper staff!

Yelp
Great food, nice atmosphere, excellent mezcal, and a super friendly, knowledgeable bartender who helped us appreciate different mezcal varieties.
