"Knowing that food options on the train were limited, we stopped for dinner at Mezzaluna, an unfussy pizzeria. At a table nearby, two people sipped wine while their Boston Terrier quietly sniffed around for bits of crust." - Gina Rich

Pretty solid Italian food, pricey but you’re in the upper east side. Many customers seemed to come because JG Melon was too busy. Pasta was tasty and al dente. Calzone was baguette style, good but heavy.

Google
Quaint Italian resto. Friendly service and great variety on the menu from salads and antipasti to pasta, pizza, and salmon and steak. Our table ordered margarita pizza, lasagna, ravioli, and linguine nere. Perfect al dente pasta and a mildly spicy tomato sauce with nuggets of tomatoey grape tomatoes made for a perfect black linguine. Everyone was happy with their meals.

Google
I have been coming here for 40 years always a New York City favorite a little on the cramp side, but great food great service a little pricey. And amazing pizza And the best tiramisu I think they were the first to serve it in New York City too.

Andrew Davis

Google
Food is probably a 3, but the prices make it a 2. Bread came with olive oil and two empty slots (others received olives and cheese). Meatballs were dry and the “famous” penne vodka tasted like it was heated in a microwave. White cloth prices in a pizzeria atmosphere. Avoid.

Google
Absolutely loved the veggie panini. Buffalo Mozzarella pizza would have been greatly enhanced with some cherry tomatoes. Service was great. Atmosphere and crowd were eclectic and fun. The music selection was unfitting for a trattoria. Rap? Still, I would highly recommend this spot. A real NY example of how important and well executed food is in the city.

Google
This place was highly recommended for it’s delicious food. Hmm, I would not even say it was ok. We ordered pizza, shrimps and calamari. Calamari was so bad, it had bitterness, I’m not sure if the problem was with souses or calamari itself but we couldn’t eat it. The service was pretty good, everyone was nice and understanding, they didn’t charge us for the calamari, and it was not a problem. Pizza with mushrooms was ok, as shrimps were, but I will not come back or recommend anyone this place. Come on guys! The main reason we go to restaurants is delicious food!

One of the best lasagna I ever had. Original recipe , very delicious

Google
Pasta is great, but this place is not cheap enough to make it your regular. Service is courteous. While the artwork on the wall looks great, the ambiance lacks charm and reminds you more of a corner diner than a mid priced Italian restaurant.

Sydney S.

Yelp
The atmosphere is nice but the food is good, not great. My friend & I started with a salad (the one with fennel) & I wasn't a huge fan but taste is personal. We also shared the spicy pizza & the flavor was great! Service was inconsistent, with long waits between service. If you visit, stick to the pizza, wine, and dessert side of the menu.

Jenn C.

Yelp
Love this place for the food ! The ambiance super authentic! Service exquisite thank you Roberto Manfè! Bravo !!!

Lee A.

Yelp
Fabulous Loved it for years! Pizza is Amazing! Service is good. Pasta is the best! A little tight quarters but that is a known

Chris S.

Yelp
I found the service ok. The Restaurant is overpriced and very loud. I found the portions to be small as well. Charging $25 for appetizers and $ 29 for a simple dish of Pasta is outrageous!! Avoid !!

Yelp
I gave five stars for the brick oven pizza. Saturday is not the day to go.. Fantastic pizza comparable to Ribalta my other favorite Italian brick oven pizza.

Jessica W.

Yelp
Best Italian food in all of New York City. Staff is kind, warm and cozy ambiance, Italian music, the vibes are immaculate.

Lara C.

Yelp
The best, best service, are kind to loyal customers, consistent food and great variety

Yelp
We live next door to Mezzaluna. If you are black, Latino or a non-white person do not come here. You will get lesser service. You will not be treated equal to white patrons. You will be persecuted as a diner of color. Please stay away. I took my little sister here for her birthday, and they brought along a friend from the neighborhood. I had called ahead to change the reservation from 6:40 PM to 8PM to be respectful of their time. The person who answered the phone was very angry to change our reservation. I was reprimanded for changing the reservation, but I did not mind being scolded. It was a birthday after all and I did not want anything to go wrong. When I was seated I reiterated to our waiter that it was my sisters birthday. The restaurant was not at max occupancy this particular evening. While dining for the next hour and half we saw 4 tables receive happy birthday congratulations with their dessert. We were excited that my sister would be next. I had selected Mezzaluna this evening for this reason. She never received the same treatment other diners and their families received. We did not even get offered the dessert menu. When I complained, the manager took it personally. He became visibly upset. He argued with me loudly in front of the entire restaurant because he did not like that I complained. The host even threatened to call the police on us. (I had tipped 18%!) We had to leave and go to a different restaurant. While at the other restaurant, I saw that we had three missed calls from Mezzaluna (I included the snapshot here). I called back and the manager apologized and asked us to return, but it was too late. Why would we go back? My sister was crying. I felt terrible. We were all incredibly shaken by the experience. My sisters are traumatized. They went home and cried to my parents. Consumers of color in the neighborhood please be weary of Mezzaluna, and do not come here. I do not believe the owner of Mezzaluna wants to be known as the proprietor of a racist restaurant, and I hope they will take immediate action to train their employees about racial bias. If this happens to you here, please write about it and report it to the city, so Mezzaluna can be held accountable. The voices and experiences of black and brown consumers matter.

Yelp
Stopped in to Mezzaluna on a Saturday around 7pm. We were seated pretty immediately. The ambience is cozy but kind of packed. The tables are pretty close together. They only had wine, which was slightly disappointing because it is summertime and I was cravingggg an Aperol Spritz! My cousin is a regular here and she ordered us the Pollanca Salad (with grilled shrimp instead of chicken!) and the Caprese pizza. They brought us a small basket of bread and a cute little tray with deliciously spicy olive oil and an assortment of olives. The food was prepared so quickly! The salad was so fresh, fruity and balanced. The shrimp was so good and I think we made the right call over the chicken! The pizza was superbly thin with a generous amount of buffalo mozzarella (the literal best cheese of all time). Overall, I really enjoyed the food. The staff can't be a bit brief with you but there did seem to be a language barrier so I'm not sure how much of that was my own misinterpretation. They seemed to want to rush us out as we continued to talk a few minutes after paying. I would definitely dine here again, though!

Yelp
Split verdict on Mezzaluna. My wife had a great meal there pre-pandemic. We were seated in the street side COVID hut. It was open on one side, but was plexiglass and there was music playing. The space was very echoic and loud. There was a waiter's station immediately next to my wife's chair. The staff would spray disinfectant about 6" away from her head every five minutes. After a while, I spoke to the host about it. He apologized and it stopped. The chairs were uncomfortable and the small table was lower than usual. We were started off with some OK bread. Wine by the glass was OK. The food almost balanced the dining experience. The special artichoke salad was very good. My wife said that the branzino was among the best that she ever had. My heart said pasta, but my head said healthy, so I ordered salmon. It was OK, but well done instead of the medium that I requested. The space was not conducive to lingering. My wife really liked the food. I thought that it was OK, but was outweighed by the uncomfortable dining situation. Would give it another try when we start dining indoors, but I'm not in a rush to go back.

Yelp
My favorite place to visit every weekend, to enjoy a delicious margarita pizza, Vitello Tonato, the service is timely and friendly with fair prices Mi lugar favorito de visitar cada fin de semana, para disfrutar de una deliciosa pizza margarita, Vitello Tonato, el servicio es oportuno y amable con precios justos

Lisa W.

Yelp
Came as a walking on a busy Saturday night and had a great meal! Service was really busy, but the team was doing there best to keep up with the the rush and we had a great evening. Started with the caprese and carpaccio, both were delicious, great fresh produce and well seasoned. After that we had a fungi pizza and the sfilatanio capri (calzone) - both were delicious! Pizza dough well seasoned and nice bite and delicious tomato sauce as for the 'calzone' it was well filled and unique! I would have liked a bit more tomato sauce in the calzone, but thats personal preference. With our meal we shared a bottle of vino nobile, great wine but do have tho say wine list is on the pricy side, would be great to have some more afforable bottles for neighborhood restaurant. All together 2 appetizer, 2 pizza, a bottle of wine and 2 coffee for almost $200! However great tasty meal.

Chloe K.

Yelp
This place is popular!! Expect lines even on weekday nights!! We ordered a salad, two pastas and a pizza. The salad looked simple but is very nice! Pasta is very al dente and fresh, and the pizza has a thin crust which is so nice! Portion is generous and food is overall very decent, but not exactly a wow factor. Definitely worth eating here if the line isn't too long!

Glenn L.

Yelp
Fake bubble gum like cheese in pizza. It's a fact and it's Fake AKA Not real cheese . Cheap substitute for real cheese. better off buying frozen pizza at least you can read the ingredients on the packaging

Monica T.

Yelp
Very packed inside but the food was yummy. One of the last places I went with my then boyfriend and my friend who lived in the area and mentioned it. We got in and seated pretty quickly without the need for a reservation though we had to ask more than once about my getting leftovers wrapped up. It definitely was pretty good overall so no complaints here.

Nicole T.

Yelp
We were super excited to try the pizza here but sadly disappointed. The food was below average, the flavors were charred and service was the worst. The calamari appetizer was charred and had overpowering flavor of a brickette They brought the wrong pizza to my husband and when we brought it to the busser's attention the waiter came out after 15 mins. Well by then he had been so hungry he decided to just eat it bc clearly they didn't care. The water was served in small half glasses and refilled once only after we asked. They still charged is for the pizza and no apologies. The pizza itself was not fired long enough and was soggy and floppy in the middle with runny sauce. There are so many other deserving restaurants that need your patronage more than his sorry Italian facade

Lisa M.

Yelp
We were waiting for an hour for our dinner and complained 3 times. They were getting annoyed with us for asking. People who came in after us were given there dinner before us. I understand mistakes are made but how about offering coffee and dessert as an apology?? Nothing!!!

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Best bread best selection. Amazing amazing food that I highly recommend you go to asap if you haven't already!

Anne D.

Yelp
I was here for dinner, but did not get what the "regulars" seem to receive-- an appetizer of cheese olives and celery. I asked the server why I wasn't offered this and was told they charge extra. Weak response. I got my takeout bag and asked again about the appetizer, he looked at me like I had 3 heads. P.S. not on the menu as an appetizer. Bad form.

Priscilla B.

Yelp
Very small pizzeria restaurant that's ALWAYS crowded. You're seated elbow-to-elbow with other tables, but the food is worth it. The pizza, among other dishes, is absolutely delicious! However, my main complaint is the timing of the kitchen. I ate with three others, and one ordered pizza. His meal got to the table well before the rest of ours and he finished before our food came. The staff did apologize (the pizza chef came out to our table to give and apology) and gave the pizza-eater a complimentary cappuccino. Will be back because the food is iconic, but was dissatisfied this time.

Peter J.

Yelp
We walked in on a Sunday afternoon. Waited in line about 5 minutes. Got seated immediately. It's a tight space and place. They have methodically extracted every seat from the restaurant. The waitress was nice enough. The service was quick. We got our bread. With olives. We ordered a salad and a pasta dish. They were both good. It came out pretty quickly. The dishes were a bit on the pricey side, but everything was done so efficiently. I did enjoy my meal and I would come back.

Gia G.

Yelp
Wonderful food and wonderful service. The waiters were the right amount of attentive, and the food was coming out at a very good pace. We have loved the restaurant for years, and the quality of food has not changed. Definitely recommend.

Dorothy W.

Yelp
I cannot fathom how this place doesn't have a 5 star review. I've been coming to this restaurant for my entire life, and have never had a single bad experience. The staff is warm and welcoming, service is phenomenal, and the food is ambrosia. Truly the penne and tiramisu would be my "last meal" request before I die. This is the best Italian restaurant I have ever visited, and the best tiramisu. I've travelled all over Italy and eaten at multiple Italian restaurants and no mater where I go, no others compare. This is a gem and 100% worth the hike across town and worth the flight across the country. Everything is delicious and the food is fairly priced for the quality, in case you're concerned about that.

Julia M.

Yelp
Food is okay, but it was extremely loud and tight place, seems they didnt consider acoustic in the restaurant and sitting next to someone breathing on their food not fun.

Melissa P.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing as well as the chicken Milanese and iced tea .. the only thing that's preventing me from giving 5 stars is that the food is rather expensive (especially the pizzas)

Mery I.

Yelp
We came to Mezzaluna for lunch after I saw it on Instagram a bunch of times! The interior design is pretty special and you recognize it in pictures ;) We ordered the Bufalina pizza and it was delicious! Loved the thin crispy crust! The iced tea is also very good and refreshing :) I'm not sure if I should rather give it 4/5 Stars because it's pricey though...

Briza R.

Yelp
Me & my friends went to out to dinner at this place because we saw it in the new gossip girl reboot. Everything was going okay until the manager came out & started arguing with a customer. The argument got extremely heated & I at one point thought the manager was about to hit the customer. I thought the whole situation was extremely unprofessional. For the manager to even let the situation get to that point says a lot. The pizza was too salty.

Raphael D.

Yelp
after I tried the tiramisu . I rethought all my life choices it's literally the best bite I've ever put in my mouth. I've reviewed 79 Italian tiramisu's in nyc and this one was by far the greatest. the penne alla bisancia slays and the salads are bomb don't miss out on this restaurant

Ross H.

Yelp
Mezzaluna is located on 3rd ave in between 74th and 75th. It is a small location, but has a great menu and very attentive wait staff. The crowd in the restaurant seemed to be locals who come here all the time. The menu seems to be stronger with the pastas and pizza. I personally came for the pizza as it's sort of a thin crust personal pie and that's what I was in the mood for. I got the spicy sausage pie and it was great. Fresh mozzarella and baisle, and they served it with a side of this spicy olive oil that was very interesting and a great addition. I can tell that their main dishes and pasta are well prepared from seeing things go to other tables. Here are a few takeaways. 1. Place is expensive simply put so know that going in 2. Small venu so party bigger than 4 might not be a good idea 3. They are closed from 3:30 - 6 pm so don't show up between those times The food probably deserves 4 stars but the prices are just too high for me to give the place more than 3.

Kaylamay S.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place. Service was great. Good was awesome. Best panini I've ever had

Marc C.

Yelp
Really good Italian pasta dishes in nice neighborhood. A bit expensive for someone from out of town but probably normal prices for NYC.

Christian S.

Yelp
Favorite Italian restaurant in the city, I was a regular over the summer and the staff is so diligent, when I brought a date for the first time they hooked me up with a free tiramisu! The creamiest penne, some top notch pizza and my favorite tiramisu!

Allie L.

Yelp
We finally came to this spot after walking by it many times. It always looks busy with a nice soft buzz of people. We came here on a Tuesday night without a reservation and were given a nice table by the window. The restaurant had a nice vibe - warm and casual. We didn't get any appetizers but they bring out some bread and yummy olives which were great. We each got a glass of Nebbiolo and we were surprised by the prices of the wines by the glass. The Nebbiolo was $17 and this was on the lower end for the reds. I would expect there to be more variation in options. For food, I ordered the linguini with clams and my husband had the lasagna of the day. We both really enjoyed them. The other food we saw looked good too. Prices on food seemed reasonable enough / what I would expect so again was confused by the wine prices. Service was very nice and efficient. Would definitely come back again except I do hope they build a bigger wine by the glass list!

Tony M.

Yelp
Ok, I love tuna. So when I saw a tuna and caper salad I was in. Then it arrived at the table. It smelled like cat food. Are you kidding me, they used canned tuna! So much for gourmet dining in Manhattan. Don't charge a premium for cat food. Next, we arrived 1:20 minutes before closing but were pressured to order because they were closing soon. The place is cramped, and the bathrooms are impossibly small. Find a different place, you will be better off - unless of course you like cat food!

Allie M.

Yelp
This place is located near my office. I like to eat here. The beautiful design and delicious dishes. My favorite pie here is the spicy sausage pies. Every ingredient is neatly placed on the pie: tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, sausage, and basils here and there. The pie is delicious. Really nice crispy crust, and fresh ingredients and toppings. Everything was delicious! I recommend this place to everyone!

Benjamin d.

Yelp
My favorite pizza spot in NYC. Wood fired. Fresh ingredients. I eat here often and am never tired of it. Caprece, Bufalina, anf Margarita are my gotos.

Matt M.

Yelp
This has been a favorite for over three decades now -- simply delicious, rustic Italian dishes on the Upper East Side. I'm especially fond of the black linguine here, and have long been a fan of Mezzaluna's battuta. (The battuta's simply perfect for hot, muggy afternoon meals!) It's a little cramped here, yes, but that's part of the place's charm. Expect to spend around $40 a person without buying more than one glass of wine. Well worth it.

Alejandro V.

Yelp
Made a reservation on a busy night to dine with friends from out of town. The manager said that they never recorded it.

Raquel A.

Yelp
Great lunch spot! The salads here are so fresh and flavorful. I had the truffled pecorino it was sweet and salty with the pears and nuts yum! I especially liked the burrata pasta it was good! Only thing is the waiter brought it over at the same time we had salads so it was cold. I also saw they served bread to others and didn't offer us bread or olives. My water glass was empty a couple times and our plates were picked up too quickly. The food was spot on but the service was sub par. I will def come back and hope service is better next time.

Jayme S.

Yelp
This place is great. After hearing good things my 2 friends and I decided to try it on a Saturday night. We waited a couple minutes for a table but definitely wasn't bad for a Saturday. We had the caprese appetizer, the pesto pizza, the penne alla vodka with mozzarella, and the pasta with asparagus. Everything was amazing. The alla vodka with mozzarella was my personal favorite and I will definitely be coming back for it. The service was also great - very attentive staff and they threw in a desert on the house. My friends and I have been raving about it and can't wait to go back. Highly recommend.

Nancy P.

Yelp
Adriana, our bartender was amazing! And the food, as always, was very, very good. Incredible pizza with wild mushrooms and artichokes! The rest of the menu looks amazing as well. Adriana picked the best wines for us too. Highly recommend!

Hayley M.

Yelp
What is there to say about a legend such as mezza? It's hard. Imagine describing Mohammad Ali but it's actually just an Italian restaurant on the upper east side that serves thin crust pizza and fire iced tea...I digress. Don't bother going anywhere but here. Yeah, the prices are steep but it's inflation and developers are hounding. An 11 out of 10. Baci baci

Alma H.

Yelp
Mezzaluna WAS fantastic. The place is now more expensive for less good takeout. The Linguini Vongola now has very few clams on the reduced amount of pasta . When I called to complain about having received white linguini, rather than the black linguini I had specified, I was informed that there was no difference. HUH? No offer to make up the error with a reduced price on the next takeout order was made by the manager. I won't be doing takeout at Mezzaluna again, nor is it likely that I will rush back when they are able to offer sit down table service again. Disappointing to see inferior service and product at a time when most restaurants are hoping to survive.

Jamie M.

Yelp
Lasagna lasagna lasagna. Melt in your mouth texture, the creamy cheesiness is heavenly, perfect portion. I couldn't say more great things. Best meal I had in a long time. Definitely coming back ASAP.

Ameena D.

Yelp
Dropped into Mezzaluna for lunch yesterday...overall it was just okay for us. Ambiance is a big problem because tables are SO CLOSE together you can't move. The claustrophobic atmosphere didn't exactly lend to a pleasant dining experience. The restaurant is also very noisy so conversation can be challenging. Service is just okay. Our server didn't come to our table for a good ten minutes and when he finally did he wasn't friendly in the least. Maybe he's just overworked? Food was mixed: -- Initially I ordered the halibut special but was told 5 minutes later that they were sold out. Had the shrimp salad instead which was quite tasty but ridiculously small for $21. -- Daughter had the funghi pizza which she loved. I can attest to the fact that the crusts were excellent. -- Husband had the pollanca salad and finished the whole bowl. Was it worth $19? Not really. -- Complimentary bread basket wasn't great as the bread was a bit dry and cold. Mezzaluna seems to be popular in the neighborhood, as evidenced by the fact most customers knew the staff by name. It would have been nice to have been welcomed as warmly as other diners but we really weren't. Based on yesterday's experience it's doubtful we'll return.

Jenna M.

Yelp
The food is great and fresh, yummy salad without just "green salad" :-) But little bit more expensive than before! "Antipasti" no less than $ 23, "dessert" no less than $ 12 for a gelato ... i'm not sure i will be back often but i love the food!

Alexa D.

Yelp
Top notch! The pizza and pasta is great! it's a must neighborhood place! Very cute upper east side Italian restaurant with amazing food

Mary Kelly F.

Yelp
The food here is amazing!! It's authentic Italian! The pizza and pasta are both equally delicious.. It's a little expensive but every good Italian place on the upper east side is. The service is great as well!! I highly recommend!!

Morgan D.

Yelp
Pretty basic Italian food. Packed place- we went around 7pm on a Tuesday and all the seats were filled. Liked the food, prices were kind of crazy. $17-20 for an appetizer-like salad. Didn't realize going into it that it would be so expensive. Wine was $12+ for a glass of red or white. Not sure if I would go back- service was good; however I think there may be some less expensive Italian spots right nearby.
