12 Hawaiian Restaurants To Try in Portland | Eater Portland

"No-frills food truck Mgwalexs — inside an old trailer on Northeast Cully — serves bites like spam musubi and potstickers alongside pineapple chicken, two- and three-meat combo plates, burgers and gyros, and stand-out sides like a peppery and flavorful mac salad that’s garnered a cult following. They also import cans of Hawaiian Sun fruit drinks from the islands." - Jenni Moore

Where to Eat and Drink in Cully | Eater Portland

"Mgwalexs Hawaiian Grill could win an award for strangest build-out of a food cart in Portland. To place orders, customers enter through a door next to the cart and find themselves in a makeshift room that feels like a secret. Customers head through yet another door for booth seating, to enjoy some of the best chicken teriyaki and garlic chicken around." - Kara Stokes

Google
This was my first time ordering food here, and when I went to pick it up the lady at the counter was so kind! She gave me samples of their two most popular chicken dishes (which were AMAZING) and then threw a small cup of Mac salad in my bag for me to try! Overall it was such a pleasant experience and I already promised her I’d be back to try something else off the menu! The place is clean and cute and their menu is huge! Also- 10/10 on the musubi! So good

Google
5/5 grabbed some garlic chicken on a whim today at their grand opening of the new location. Bomb. Surprised to see some macaroni salad inside the to go container, normally I wouldnt eat one that mom didn't make, but that shgdthnamf.

Google
How do they not have 5 stars!! Me and my daughters comfort meals 🩷 We miss you guys on cully but will follow you guys wherever! The passion orange combo plate with the Mac salad and rice is always our go to! So delicious!! ( always add that extra scoop of Mac) !!

Google

Google
I can't say anything bad about this joint because I literally can't think of any. That's the god honest truth. This spot serves the best fast Hawaiian food. It's right there next to Roxy's another fav Hawaiian place. I always get the sweet garlic chicken cuz it reminds me of the fried chicken I remember eating back in South Korea. Also their Mac salad is the best hands down. Idk what they did but it hits the spot every time I eat there. There's many other delicious dishes you can order but whichever one you order you won't be disappointed.Only thing you might regret is not having tried it sooner!

Google
Food was edible but on the dry/bland side. Portions for the mac were TINY.

Myranda Orr

Google
Amazing flavors and fairly priced. My favorite is the crispy pineapple chicken and spicy masubi. Must try!

Paige Rochelle

Google
Had lunch with a coworker while working near by, the chicken was very moist and flavorful. My friend got the teriyaki burger and she was pleased with her choice. Overall Would visit again I like that there is an indoor seating area to get out of the elements despite it being a food truck.

Tanner S.

Yelp
I love this place! All employees I've encountered have been nice & helpful. The kalua pork is fantastic (I get it almost every time I go) The building isn't amazing but, I go for the food, not the building! It's a great food cart with a covered seating area if you care to dine in.
google avatar

Warren C.

Yelp
Pretty good Hawaiian food stall. Very straightforward. Ordered some BBQ and kalua pork. Cashier was friendly. It's a bit hot and stuffy to dine inside, so I'd look at this more of a takeout place. There's a few parking spots in the small lot.

Howard M.

Yelp
I have a very small food budget. I had the chance tonight to treat myself and I must say that my bad review is not all this venues fault because I also used one of the rental delivery people.. however I looked carefully at the menu picked out the thing that sounded the best. When it got to me, it was bland and tasteless. There was supposed to be a sauce. And I consider this an insult, but I could've done just as good by going to the grocery store and getting microwave chicken nuggets. To top it off and I looked at my bill. I ordered diet soda. I got regular soda and I can't drink sodas because I have diabetic issues. I just have to say no just know.

Tony K.

Yelp
Worst Hawaiian food ever! Had the loco moco and it was a disappointment! They didn't make their own patty and the gravy broke! I have never ate Hawaiian food this gross ever! Rice was soggy, patty wasn't seasoned and gravy was gross! This place shouldn't be open!

Andrew A.

Yelp
It will fill you up but the food quality is meh. Musubi rice was dry. Garlic chicken was mushy. And $4.75 for that "side" of mac. Bruh that box is the size for the sauce. That alone will keep me from coming back here.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Came here randomly off a recommendation. Was not disappointed! Very good food, average prices for what you get. Will def come here again!
google avatar

Aj W.

Yelp
Went to Hawaii and ever since have been very particular about my Hawaiian food, this is definitely one of the places that's a go to for sure.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I have no idea what's up with this name, but I found them online and I wanted Hawaiian food delivered and this looked good. And it was good. Personally I liked that they used more veg than most places, but I really wish it had come with sauce. I know me though, so I always have good sauces at home (I really do like too much on it, oh well). They teriyaki chicken was really good to me for some reason. Usually I don't care too much for that, but it was well marinated and didn't need anything extra, that's for sure. Plus I went with the noodles on that one and was really glad I did. Mac salad is typical, but that's what I like about Hawaiian mac salad - all the mayo. Everything tasted good and the portions were plenty.
google avatar

Aaron J.

Yelp
Ooommmmgggg. Amazing! Sorry if the pics are blurry we were in a hurry to eat The Mac salad is AMAZING. They send a ramekin's worth and that's all you need because it's a heavy component of the meal! But it's aaammaazziinnggg. The short ribs were devoured immediately. The pork and chicken dishes were PERFECT. We LOVE when a chicken dish shows up and it still has that good crunch. It's clearly freshly made and the sauce hasn't made it soggy, like what you'll get from some restaurants. I will say we were not fans of the masubi but we didn't get to it for a while. Maybe if we had eaten it right away, it would have been better? Good Hawaiian food is hard to find, when on the mainland, but this place, yeah we will be ordering Mgwalex's again!!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good Hawaiian food one of my favorites I usually order the pineapple chicken it's pretty delicious and the prices are pretty good.
google avatar

susy p.

Yelp
Best Hawaiian Food in town!! You must try their pineapple chicken it is the best thing ever!!!!!
google avatar

Mindy K.

Yelp
I ordered the shoyu chicken plate. They gave a generous portion of chicken that seemed like it was marinated a little too long for my taste but okay when eaten in small portions. They had a pretty large menu including gyros. I would come back if I'm in the area again.

Martin C.

Yelp
Super friendly, speedy service, good food. I would not recommend the loco moco. Burger was a frozen patty, unseasoned, with what tasted like Grandmas Brown Gravy pack from grocery outlet over rice with two also unseasoned sunny side up eggs. Eggs were cooked perfectly though. Not enough gravy, too much rice. Mac salad is fantastic. Again, the loco moco is my favorite Hawaiian dish, and I was very very disappointed with this because I really like this food cart usually.

Yelp
Trying to find the words to even begin to describe how delicious my dinner from Mgwalexs was last night. It most certainly blew my socks off! Now, I am no Hawaiian food connoisseur. I haven't even been to Hawaii, if I'm being honest. But I do know that I love Hawaiian food. I have my favorites and it takes a lot for me to branch out. BUT, last night, I had a craving. I didn't want to leave my house and knew I was going to rely on a delivery app. I pulled out my phone and started to take a look at places offering delivery. When Mgwalexs pulled up, I jumped on yelp and saw sooo many great reviews, so I decided to try it! We ordered: Sweet Garlic Chicken w/ rice & mac Shoyu Chicken w/ rice & mac Potstickers Extra side of mac Our food got to us quickly and was even still warm! The sad part is, I am guessing they were out of rice, because were given yakisoba instead. Which ended up being perfectly fine because it was DELICIOUS. Both the garlic chicken and shoyu were good... but let me get to what was my absolute favorite... The. Freakin. Mac. Salad. IT WAS SO GOOD. Like SO SO GOOD. I am picky about my Hawaiian mac salad because I prefer it more savory than sweet. And this easily became my new favorite. Hands down. The sides are of it are pretty small, so if you are a mac salad fan like me, order yourself an extra side!

Yelp
I love love love this place I just discovered it after driving past it and I so regret not trying this sooner their spam Musubis as well !! Omg to die for i so recommend trying this place out and it is affordable as well !
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
If I was rating only the spam musubi, this would easily be a 5 star review; they are garlicky and amazingly delicious (even the next day). The ratio of rice to spam is really nice. The garlic chicken is also very ono. I had the loco moco this last time, and it was good, but not great. The gravy was perfect, but the burger was pretty generic, overcooked (tough?), and not enough to go with the massive amount of rice. To be fair, I opted for only rice, and no mac salad. It's pretty inexpensive (I think just $12 or $13), so if I order it again, I'll see if I can add another patty. We also had some kalua pig, and it was too sweet for our tastes... I do want to try some of their other dishes next time, but we'd be pretty dang happy with just the musubi and garlic chicken. I wish there was a description for the bacon musubi... We might just take a leap of faith next time and try them out. We've only ever ordered delivery from here (I think through Caviar).

Yelp
I keep meaning to try new items, but I loved the first few items we tried I just keep ordering them. The food is consistent and delicious. Highly recommend the sweet garlic chicken and the macaroni and cheese!
google avatar

April J.

Yelp
Food always amazing and staff super friendly. Even thought it's a cart, it has a covered area with tables to sit at if you don't want takeout.

Douglas J.

Yelp
This place. Just went in for a side of Mac salad. Got the 8oz 'shareable' which they said was $3.95. Realized later they charged us $4.75. They confirmed 8oz as we picked it up. It's this tiny box. Weigh it when we get home. 4.5 ounces... definitely not shareable. wtf.

Yelp
Ordered from GrubHub, through Yelp!, and had a pleasant experience. It was an estimated 60 min until delivery which was fine by me on a Friday night. The GH driver provided the best customer experience - he was a few minutes early, called while he was approaching, and told me to expect him in a minute. This allowed me to anticipate the arrival as opposed to someone just knocking on the door. When he showed up, he also advised I grab the bottom of the bag to prevent an accidental drop. 5 stars for him! On to the food ... it was good, not outstanding. The gyro was really good, the fries a little dry and no flavor. Kids had musing (woo hoo) and Kalua pig & chicken teriyaki - too much ginger flavor in the pork sauce and a little too sweet. My biggest issue was with the rice - each plate had a ton of rice and it was mushy and over sauced which resulted in throwing most of it out. Try get some chicken katsu on the menu?
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I've never heard anyone refer to this place by name. I usually pass when a menu tries to be all things: here's its burgers, gyros and Hawaiian food, oh and throw-in a few Chinese staples so as to not discriminate. And normally, a patty on a buy-in-bulk sesame seed bun, iceberg lettuce, tomato, and boring dark yellow cheese elicits a yawn (and a throw back image to the 1980's.) However, sometimes a simple classic is all that's required. Couple that craving with a $5 price tag and you have satisfaction. The owner/window gal was nice. They offer ample covered seating, but you will sweat if over 90 degrees. The parking lot is funky. And for ambiance there was John Doe sores all over his back behind me and lovely Mr. and Mrs. Meth looking in my car window. All that said, I'd go back.

Igor K.

Yelp
I've searched all of Hawaii for this taste, only to find it in a food cart in Portland. 10/10
google avatar

Matt Z.

Yelp
Stopped here yesterday and absolutely loved the teriyaki chicken combo in the Mac salad is some of the best I've ever had. Nice covered area to sit and eat your food to go along with the food truck.
google avatar

Taisiya S.

Yelp
This place is solid. You can even order ahead and have it ready when you get here if you are on a time crunch. I was here yesterday and ordered the KalBi Ribs and ate them on the go so I didn't take photos but came back today with the hubs and got food for us and our son. Hubs got the Rib Eye Teriyaki, I had a mix of the Garlic Chicken and Rib Eye Teriyaki and our son had the Kalbi ribs. Each one was amazing. They come with Hawaiian macaroni salad and 2 scoops of rice. The rice was perfectly cooked and sticky and the macaroni was so tasty without being overly sweet. I loved it. I even had to edit my review to rave just a lil bit more about this perfectly awesome Hawaiian macaroni salad. OMG....OMG....I think I'm hooked on it as I keep coming back just to have more!! The Garlic Chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy inside, I couldn't finish it so I gave 1/2 of my meal to my daughter. Definitely will be back as the prices were between $7.50 - $10.50.

April J.

Yelp
My husband likes to get takeout from Noho's and this time I suggested we try Mgwalexes and I'm so glad we did! The mac salad was the best I've ever had with the perfect amount of finely chopped carrots and scallions and an indescribable savory yum factor. The shoyu chicken was tender and flavorful. I can't wait to try other dishes.
google avatar

Gabriel A.

Yelp
Food is super good, service is good, prices and portions are alright. Hits the spot especially if you're looking for Hawaiian comfort food. I didn't eat there but I'd be happy to if I had reason to, it's a comfortable spot. Go eat here.
google avatar

Annie W.

Yelp
Just got some food delivered from here and it's so delicious! Hawaiian comfort food at its best. Ordered the shoyu chicken, kalbi ribs, and teriyaki chicken. All super tasty! Came with rice, yakisoba, and Mac salad. Loved the salad!! Recommend getting extra sauces on the side to drizzle over your food, but it's flavorful enough with it too.
google avatar

Spencer M.

Yelp
One item I ordered stated "served with your choice of Coca-Cola Product" get jt was a required addition to the cost of the combo. This is not "included", it's extra! The side salad did not include (or ask for) dressing options so it was a useless order. Pretty sure the "Sriracha Mayo" was only straight sriracha sauce. I was tempted to give a 3 star but the food was VERY GOOD!!! The meat was juicy and tender, it was just the side options that were a little off.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
The musubi was some of the best I have had in Portland. The pulled pork was not good(who eats a 2in by 3in size of fat?) 2/3 or more was pure fat and not eatable. The chicken was good...the rice was too done and mushy.

Christian G.

Yelp
I don't write many reviews, but I had to take the time to give this place some props. My partner was born and raised in Hawaii, so we are pretty well versed in Hawaiian food. This place has excellent quality and consistency. It's light years beyond any other Hawaiian place I have ever tried in Portland. I used to love Ate-Oh-Ate on Burnside, but after eating Mgwalexs I can't go back. Everything I have tried there is TOP TIER! The best thing on the menu IMO is their Shoyu Chicken. I have become addicted, and I order it almost weekly. The Garlic chicken/shrimp and Kalua pork is also excellent. Their pasta salad is seasoned perfectly, and it goes with almost everything on the menu. However, if you try only one thing, make it the Shoyu chicken! Or go with the Aloha Combo and get both the garlic shrimp and Shoyu chicken with rice and pasta salad. The prices are very reasonable (and totally worth it!). They also pack their food expertly, with sturdy containers, and they have never once messed up my order! My ONLY complaint is that they used to have this Baklava for desert that was just Devine, and it just disappeared of then menu! Please, please, please bring back the Baklava! Thank you Mgwalex, from the bottom of my heart, for making life just a little more tolerable during this pandemic by continuing to make stellar food at reasonable prices. Now if you could just stay open past 8pm so I could order from you even more!
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Always quality food this place is open and received great businesses through COVID, so I'm happy to eat hear regularly:)
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
They should call it OMGwalexs ... so good! Especially the macaroni salad. Weird flex but try it, seriously And pineapple chicken, seriously good
google avatar

Marshae P.

Yelp
I ordered the Sweet Garlic Chicken. It tastes very good but by the time I was ready to eat it the steak caused my chicken to get soggy. I suggest getting containers with air holes. I would definitely order again. Comes with rice and macaroni salad!
google avatar

Zach O.

Yelp
If only I still lived in Cully, I'd be in the triangle twice a week; chowing down on Mgwalexs. This place kinda weirded me out for a while, as I dont usually trust the whole "We've got burgers AND gyros AND teriyaki!" thing. Advertisements like that make one think that maybe the place cant do one thing well and are just covering their bases with an overcrowded menu. However a few paces inside, Hawaiian grill becomes the clear specialty of Mgwalexs. The most popular dishes are a mouthwatering sweet garlic chicken dish, and a more fimiliar orange chicken dish. For me, its the Kalua pig with extra mac salad all the way. Honestly doubt you will try something here you dislike, as meat rice and mac salad is pretty much the holy trinity of quick eats.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD. At first I was hesitant about mixing rice and Mac salad but holy moly. DELICIOUS. The sweet garlic chicken and chicken teriyaki are amazing. This is officially my new comfort food spot.
google avatar

Mikhail H.

Yelp
We got this on takeout. Alright - so their Kahlua pork, rice and mac salad are worth the three stars - portions were pretty epic too. You never know what you are going to get when you get takeout and we did three different meats to try them out. I personally did not like the other two. The shoyu chicken I did not care for at all by my husband loved it. Neither of us was a giant fan of the ribeye which is normally a favorite meat of mine. But, again, the three stars is just for the Kahlua pork alone because that was so delicious! We are definitely going to give it another go.

Kym L.

Yelp
Da bomb. Shoyu chicken is the best in town and you can't beat the uniquely creamy and garlicky Mac salad.

Chelsie B.

Yelp
Best hawaiian food in portland! Not always open during their posted hours, but when we want hawaiian food we always try and go here.
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to order from. Their pork is off the hook good. Tender, hot and a little sweet. I usually get the garlic chicken and pork combo but nothing here is wrong. I recommend adding an extra cup of Mac salad with anything cause it's really good.
google avatar

Anjelica G.

Yelp
I'm going to tell you now.. this is not authentic Hawaiian food. From the Mac salad to the katsu sauce.. nope. Not it sis. If you want to try something real good, please try L&L Hawaiian when you go to cali .. that's realllll!! I keep wasting my money on shitty "Hawaiian" spots in portland. just not it. I know my food and I know when something is made at home and something that was store bought.. most of the shit is store bought .. literally got A1 streak sauce for my Chicken Katsu ... excuse me? Lol nah sis. No thank you
google avatar

K F.

Yelp
Poor customer service and the food has really gone down in quality. Stay away from this place!
google avatar

Cacey C.

Yelp
Hate to leave a bad review I wanted to love this place. I ordered the veggie yakisoba, spam musubi, and Mac salad. The yakisoba tasted old and slightly burnt like when a pot of coffee has been on too long. As for the veggies in it there was one piece of broccoli and the dish was so heavily peppered I took two bites and gave up. It came with 2 spring rolls also so heavily seasoned with pepper I couldn't eat. The spam musubi was awful, tasted as if it was very old, dried out and had a weird fishy taste. The only thing I ate more than a bite of out of everything was the Mac salad which was moderately decent but again heavy on the pepper. So disappointed.
google avatar

Menavy R.

Yelp
Their Hawaiian garlic chicken is on point! Ordered delivery got to me pretty fast and the food was still nice and hot. Definitely will be ordering again!
google avatar

Taeyonia L.

Yelp
Customer service is splendid and food is awesome. They are soo nice and I've never had complaints about there food nor service. My entire family eats here. Their a must try!
google avatar

Mackenzie B.

Yelp
The shrimp combo is sooo good! More then plenty of food for the price , such a good deal. The shrimp is so crispy and the sauce is perfection:)
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
I found this place on Uber Eat and they have good food with a nice price. Their mac salad is tasty and the sauces are great to drizzle on rice! My most favorite so far are Kalbi ribs, Teriyaki Chicken, and Shoyu Chicken
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Let me tell you about this place, I used to eat their food occasionally but it got old quick and I started going to another cart quite often and today while I was waiting for my food at one of the other cards the Mexican gentleman at the Hawaiian foodcart came over and told me he did not like me coming to the other carts so often and did not want to see me there no more now I asked what kind of business owner would do that to neighboring businesses I'll tell you what kind a jealous one just because his business is slow is no reason to run off customers of his neighboring businesses that obviously have better food than his and is not pre-made. Perhaps if he did not allow the man that lives in the shed behind the old BBQ place and hasn't bathed in months to hang out at his place perhaps he would have more business.
google avatar

Ty Y.

Yelp
Came here with a co-worker. First thing I saw was the "Hawaiian Sun" products. It put a smile on my face. So I ordered the Kalua Pig plate. It came with 2 scoops of Rice (which was a bit on the soggy side, which told me that there was too much water in it while cooking) 1 scoop of "Mac" salad with a bit much on the pepper, and I was expecting it to be sweeter and creamier. (I must be spoiled from back home style) The Kalua Pig... I am on the fence on this, because I know everyone has there own recipe for this dish. Let's just say that the portion was of good size, and the meat was very juicy and had a very strong Smokey taste to it, and leave it at that!

Ashley N.

Yelp
I ordered the Shoyu Chicken through GrubHub delivery, first time eating here. It was great! No clue if it's traditional Hawaiian but it's better than a lot of other Hawaiian food I've had in Portland. It came with a huge serving of rice, a side of mac salad and also a little cabbage/greens salad which was a nice addition. The mac salad is some of the best I've had, it actually had flavor, definitely some herbs/spices in there. Again, not sure if this is traditional but most of the mac salad in Portland is just flavorless creamy macaroni noodles and it's effing gross. Not this place, plus the chicken was flavorful and not dry. Everything tasted great!

Eliza K.

Yelp
This is the second time I used the GrubHub to order food delivery. I decided to order Hawaiian food and chose this food place. The delivery was very fast and food are warm. I got Kalua pig dinner platter and chicken wings platter. It comes with 2 scoop of rice and small portion of macaroni salad. The macaroni salad is lacking of flavor. The Kalua pork is a little bit salty. The chicken wings is good. The price is reasonable. It's good for people on the go and quick bites.
