13 Houston Restaurants Serving Stellar Central and South American Cuisine | Eater Houston

"This Honduran restaurant is the definition of a hidden gem, but deserves to be seen, and tasted. The sweet, orange sauce poured over the Pincho Res (beef skewers) makes for a deliciously unique pairing and should not be missed. The salty cheese served on the side will take your taste buds straight to Central America, and the crispy, meat-stuffed pastelitos are the cherry on top." - Christina Autry

Great experience. It was my first time in the restaurant while visiting TX, enjoyed the food and if I am ever I back in TX I would definitely visit again to try other dishes.

Google
Reviewing other recent posts and there seems to be a lack of quality or care now from this restaurant. The Baleadas barely had anything inside. I ordered a simple one with beans, cheese and sour cream. I pretty much got tortilla with a thin scrape of beans and sour cream. 95% was just tortilla. It is sad to see such a great place lose its heart for the food. As of now we will find a different Honduran restaurant to spend our money. Look at recent reviews not old reviews. This place has changed. It was great in the past but not anymore.

Google
Took a bit to get our food but was well worth it when biting into it! The plantain with beans and cream was amazing! Pastelito was good which is why there's bit of the 2 that were served. The special that day of coconut chicken mixed with the rice was very delicious when combined. The rice was best I've had overall. Servers are extremely nice. Food was very good, will return soon!

This is one of the places that cooks very similar to my family's cooking. Not all Honduran cook the same. If you want to taste a lil bit of our culture this is a great place. There may be a wait, but its always worth it for fresh, authentic, and delicious meal. My kids enjoy eating here too 😋

It's a great place if you want to have authentic Honduran food with excellent service!

Google
The food was amazing! My mother had the breakfast plate and I had a baleada with beef. The restaurant is really nice and I loved the Spanish pop they were playing.

Google
The wait was a bit long but was worth it ,once the food was served. Everything was delicious and cooked well. The waiter was patient and helpful with I understand some of the items.

I love this place The service is always the best. The food is so delicious recently remodeled, and it looks so nice music not too loud.

Yelp
Great experience at Mi Bella Honduras! My boyfriend and I have been to several Honduran restaurants and Mi Bella Honduras is a worthy contender. It is located in a shopping center, so lots of parking available. When you enter, the restaurant is nicely decorated and the staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. He ordered the carne asada and I ordered a fried chicken dish with plantains (I've had at other Honduran restaurants but can't remember the name). Mi Bella Honduras made my dish very well - the portion was large and I liked that the chicken was on top of the plantains to capture all the flavor. The sauce was delicious too, almost like a Cane's sauce but Honduran. Great food and good experience!

Yelp
Amazing Service, Awesome Food, and Ambiance on Point!!! Totally recommend this restaurant!! My sisters and I came from the SF/Bay Area added this place to our Houston trip. We were not disappointed! Super delicious!

Yelp
We just moved to the area and wanted to try this place out, the servers are very nice and quick. The food was absolutely delicious and you can tell homemade. They do serve beer and a lot of different drinks. They have a super nice bar seating area. We really enjoyed the food and will be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was so good! Portions are big so just a warning to those who eat just a little. Servers were nice and knowledgeable of the menu. The ambience was beautiful and the music was not too loud. The plus was that they were playing Kitchen Nightmares while eating so I was entertained watching that with my boyfriend. I really hope the quality of food does not go down later in the years! I will come back ‍

Yelp
Delicious Baleadas and traditional offerings that took me right back to Honduras! You won't regret ordering the Pollo con Tajadas. QUÉ SABOR

Yelp
The food was good my husband enjoyed the flavors, but my gas-good rice was a bit mosh for my taste. But overall was good. The service was ok waiter could have been more attentive instead of being on the phone. The place was clean and very nicely decorated.

Yelp
It took almost an hour to get our food. When I got my fried chicken it was dark meat not white meat. We had to leave so when we NEVER got our soup ordered an hour before they said it's ready now we will make it to go. Our empanadas were soaked in the juice from the cabbage, I guess they had sat so long waiting to be brought to our table. I had to take my chicken to go as well. The whole experience SUCKED!

Yelp
Good Honduran food. 1st time trying this type of food and was impressed. Food took a bit to come out but well worth waiting for. I got the coconut shrimp and it was so good. Prices are fairly reasonable :-)

Nicandra M.

Yelp
Food was really good, service was ok and ambiance could use a little push by owners and staff I'd definitely try again
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
The food was not the best and was not super bad eaither , it was more like food when someone is learning how to cook. The place was pack so maybe was my dish and not the whole menu. I wont be back the service was also slow and I got my drink 10 min after i got my food and it took a while to get the food.

Yelp
Buena experienciaaaaaa! I've been looking for a Honduran restaurant for a while and this place is IT. Big portions. Cheap prices. Good food.

Yelp
The Bella Twins vs Roman Reigns? You can keep Roman around and wait for the summer Reigns. Just give Me Bella. Get it? Mi Bella. It's an absolutely wonderful Honduran restaurant in one of the most Honduran parts of town, which is an absolutely gorgeous area by the way. I love it and it's really hard not to. I'll probably be back here many times in future. It's also in the same plaza as my gym, so it's been a post-lifting cheat-ish snack on about half a dozen occasions this year alone.

Yelp

Yelp
SOPA DE MARISCOS that's all I have to say Best soup I have had the service is great and they are really good wait. Food came out quick and was fire!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Good authentic food in the heart of Spring Branch. Service was good, very friendly and had a mom and pop vibe. We order the fried chicken, and cocnut shrimp. I wanted to order more, BUT there was just 2 of us, so definitely will be back to try other items!
google avatar

Yelp
There is nowhere else in town that I can find some really good conch soup with plenty of fresh conch. Staff barely speaks English, but offers the best customer service.

Daniela P.

Yelp
We came here with my sister the other day, to be honest I wasn't expecting much since my last experience here was terrible BUT idk if they change owner but they did a great change , the place is beautiful and the food was more that delicious and the waitress was so nice, and made us feel so welcomed , now I highly recommend this place , ppl looking for good Honduran food this is the right place for you, you will not be disappointed! now this one is one of my favorite restaurants
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 10 years and they've consistently stayed the best Honduran food in Houston, in my opinion. Every dish reminds me so much of home- baleadas, pastelitos, tortilla con quesillo, enchiladas, etc. Never been disappointed with any dish and have ordered almost every item on the menu. 10/10 recommend.

Jime F.

Yelp
Food was great. Amount perfect. Service great. The price was good. Descent price great taste of food.

Yelp
We visited Mi Bella Honduras Restaurant while running errands in the area. This place is located in a strip center with ample parking out front. The staff was friendly, professional, and set good time expectations for our to go order. My mouth was watering at how delicious everything coming out of the kitchen smelled. I can't wait to try the food here again. It tastes like someone's grandma prepared it for you, which I love when I go outside my comfort zone during lunch. We tasted the: - Yuca frita - Carne Asada - Encurtido - Chimol - Tajadas - Arroz y Frijoles - Chimol - Baleadas The prices here are extremely reasonable. If you are in the area or willing to make the drive, I definitely recommend this restaurant and will be back to try something else.

Yelp
Food is fantastic and service is always great. Had order many times here and come with my fami. I love their fry fish with green plantain and baleadas.

Yelp
Impressed! Food was delicious and the manager went above and beyond to please us as it was our first time eating there! Excellent food and service! We had mariscada and desayuno tipico con pollo y curtido.

Yelp
El servicio al cliente siempre es excellente y la comida es rica , un lugar muy limpio.

Yelp
Where the heck have baleadas been all my life? Never heard of these wonderful breakfast items before our recent Houston visit, but for my money, they're just about perfect. See, the wife and I almost never go out for big weekend breakfasts anymore--we prefer to reserve our big calorie intakes for lunchtime--but eating light, healthier breakfasts at home can get tedious, too. A baleada fills the gap perfectly. At the least the one I got at Mi Bella Honduras did: Specifically, this was the "Baleada Super Especial," which was quite simple for being "super especial": a big, light, airy flour tortilla with just a bit of crispness, black beans, sour cream, cheese, avocado, and tender carne asada, all for the ridiculously low price of $3.75. There's a selection of Mexican and Central American hot sauces on the table if you want to jack up the heat a bit. Mi Bella Honduras looks like any Anglo strip-mall breakfast joint or diner, except that this one had TVs blaring Latino variety shows.

Yelp
Not sure if I ordered the wrong item or maybe im not well versed on Honduran food. But the flavors weren't right for me too greasy, too monotonous no variation on the spices (i ordered several dishes) . I do have to mention the pork (chicharrón) was good. Service was very slow, restaurant was full so i can understand that. But not my kind of flavors.
google avatar

Stephanie Z.

Yelp
It's soooo yummyyy! Great food!!! Great prices!! Me and my husband come almost every week

Frances M.

Yelp
I've been here plenty times but I recently went back to check it out. I brought a friend who never had Honduran food and I practically bragged about this place. When we finally got our food, everything came as expected, but while we are eating the staff was either texting and not checking in on us. I've been to this location several times, but this really irked me. Although it is a casual restaurant, i expect better customer service than this. Overall, the food was okay. The employees just didn't seem to care that day.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Mi Bella is clean with good service and decent food. I enjoyed the fried chicken which is served along with plantains and onions which appeared to be pickled in beet juice. Mi Bella is in an old strip center on Long Point at Wirt.
google avatar

Gladys M.

Yelp
Well, this is the best Honduran place I've been to in Houston. I had a Baleada sencilla and a Carne asada plate. All of it was good except I didn't too much care for the tajadas. There were a little undercooked but overall it was very good. I would be going back very soon
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and had a good experience both times. It's good Honduran food. I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the desayuno Catracho, the Honduran breakfast. It comes with beans, hard cheese, plantains with cream, a slice of avocado, and eggs. It was simple but well prepared and delicious. The last time I was there, I got two baleadas, one sencilla (simple) with beans and hard cheese, and one especial (with egg and avocado). I don't love the hard sour cheese that seems to be a big part of Honduran cooking, but I don't hate it either. The waitress spoke English or Spanish, whichever you're more comfortable with, and she was very friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a casual Honduran dining experience, definitely head here.

Yelp
I had never had food from Honduras but went with my friend the other day. I was expecting the places to be empty since you couldn't see inside but once we walked in we saw they had tons of people. Given the reviews I wasn't expecting much. However they were very friendly. The food obviously takes time to make so no complaints there. I had their horchata that reminded me of the Salvadorian one. And their amazing juice, maracuya (passion fruit). Because I had never had Honduras food I decided to try the combo plate. The lady forewarned it was a lot of food. I figured I would take the leftovers home. The food was so good. I don't know what type of sauce they had but that made everything better. Would definitely come again but probably not on a Sunday as they're a lot of families there. FYI they do take credit cards. I saw people paying cash non stop.

Yelp
When I walked into Mi Bella I was immediately transported back to San Pedro Sula Honduras where my wife is from. The service is friendly and the food is just like back in Honduras.

Yelp
Perfect place for Baliadas! I'm not Honduran but familiar within a couple dishes through a friend.. I work close to this place so I've visited twice already and the girls who work there are really sweet, chatty but work pretty fast. I called ahead of time to pick up food and got it pretty fast. I love the Baliadas which are a huge thick flour tortilla with beans, avocado, scrambled eggs, cheese and an option of Steak chunks. DELICIOUS!! And really low coast of 4$ with meat and about 2 and change w/o meat. The restaurant has a homie feel, has a bar you can sit and eat too.. great choices of beer and Honduran drinks! I'll totally be visiting this place often!
google avatar

Manny G.

Yelp
I'm here for breakfast. I love getting a couple of baleadas with coffee. It's cheap and delicious.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Cute environment and the food was very true to the Honduran culture! Good value for what you receive.

Dilcia M.

Yelp
This place is amazing, very clean happy environment. The food is great, always served fresh. Authentic Honduran food.. You will not regret this place. Staff is very friendly
google avatar

Manuel O.

Yelp
Well first thing is that the food was great,on point, very tasty. You do have to wait a little bit for the food but it worth the wait, no music blasting here that it's unbearable, just good topical Honduras music. Why 4 stars not 5 waiters do seem to rush you while ordering, otherwise it would be 5 The value is good prices are good for the portions served
google avatar

Camille H.

Yelp
Excellent food for a great price! Went on a Saturday and almost everyone was eating the caldo de res (beef soup) even though it's summer in Houston. Just that good! The stuffed plantains and baleadas are also delicious. Staff spoke in Spanish so be prepared (menu has English on it though).

Yelp
Mi Bella Honduras Around downtown in Federal Way is this restaurant worth checking out. It has parking, enough place to sit and a pool table (Mesa de billar), and right away as you go inside you can feel that Central American food scent and atmosphere. The owners or people who tend the restaurant speak perfect English and are so sweet and polite. They keep an eye on your cup, but do yourself a favor and get a pitcher of horchata because the Hondurian horchata has peanut in it so it's like a peanut butter milk SO GOOOD!!! The plates are very reasonable around $8-$13 or pupusas, baliadas, stuff like that for:$2 or so, it's really reasonable. The meal is so amazing I forgot to take a picture (sorry guys) I had a baliada (a flour tortilla with refried beans with melty cheese inside and folded in half) and a pupusas. The lady of the restaurant comes out and our party got to meet her, how cool!!!! She showed us some things she has, they have a gift shop, in that gift shop you can get souvenirs from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala and she even has the favorite chips from the brand "Diana" so it is amazing!! The flavor is out of this world delicious!!!! Why I wouldn't go there: Their location is too far away for me. The prices could be lower. If you are vegan maybe you can ask for something but chances are you won't find that. Vegetarians you may have an easier time something more to your taste. Why I would go there: It's delicious! Very clean, great attention, it's divided in diner and pool room. The familiar feeling they have at home they bring to the restaurant. I would recommend this place 100%.

Eddy C.

Yelp
This place is great , sopa de res was amazing made the original way , staff was friendly, my family were happy we will definitely go back for baleadas, thank you.

Yelp
Great Honduran food the food was delicious it's has its own unique flavor and the customer service was truly above and beyond. . I really like it ...

P L.

Yelp
I got the pinche de cerdo which was very tender and a huuuge portion I only ate half. Good value for the price. Home style cooking. Not upper class, more working class
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
I think this is my first 5 star rating ever, but well worth it. I had the Carne Asada with rice and beans. Plus she offered tortillas or plantains or green bananas. I opted for the tortillas and the plantains. The Carne Asada itself was perfect. Soft and tender with a nice pink center. The beans and rice were good, but I was surprised the rice was plain white rice. The tortillas were massive, and I had to tear them down to make a taco size to use them to eat with. But all that being said the plantains were amazing!! They were the first thing I tried and the first thing I finished. As much as I enjoyed the food here really the service is what put it over the top for me. Nothing but warm smiles all around, even when you order like a clueless white boy.
google avatar

Jenifer S.

Yelp
My first time trying Honduran food...this was not a good experience. My family is Central American so I figured this wouldn't be too bad... I was wrong. I got the carne asada and when I went to eat a piece, the meat was cold and tough. When I told the waitress (and also told her I would just eat the baleada I got on the side), she was very embarrassed and told me she could have it reheated or packed in a to-go box. She let me know that I would still have to pay for the meal. I went ahead and chose to have it reheated-not a good idea, it made the meat more tough. Needless to say, I did not eat the meal. I wasn't much of a fan of the baleada either, but that may just be because I've never been a fan of Central American cheese. My lunch date got the shrimp (not sure which specific meal it was), he wasn't happy with it either and he's half Honduran. We will not be returning.

Mark L.

Yelp
Delicious Honduran food. Authentic flavors and well-cooked food. Reasonably priced and portions. Service could be a little faster, but overall, good value for the money. Best Honduran restaurant in Houston, TX. Would definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
First time here but will not be my last! Nice flavor and well prepared. I had carne asada with cabbage and fried green bananas. The server was from Honduras and we cheated in Spanish and English. I learned I had visited her town a few years ago. Price? A little bit more than a hamburger at Whataburger but not much. Atmosphere - not ever going to be a five star destination for the River Oaks crowd, but that suits me just fine! It is clean and friendly staff. It is salsa, bachata and Latin pop music - again a plus for me. If you are looking for a casual place to eat for a tasty but inexpensive dinner, try this place. I do not think you will be disappointed. Oh, they also "to go" as well.
google avatar

Maria D.

Yelp
Food was fantastic. I am Honduran and know what our country's cuisine should taste like. I love how everything is NOT super salty and ultra delicious. Loved it!
google avatar

Olga Z.

Yelp
This is one of the best Honduran restaurants in the houston area. The service is always great and the restaurant is clean. Some of my favorite dishes are the baleadas, sopa de res, pollo con tajadas and sopa de mariscos. Definitely have become my favorite Honduran restaurant.

Mylien N.

Yelp
The food is delicious! My husband brought me here like 5 years ago and been going to Mi Bella ever since. The service is great. The food do take a little longer to come out but it's definitely worth it. I recommend coming to this restaurant if your in the area. Parking in this plaza is a little rough.
