The Biggest Dallas Dining Stories of 2020 | Eater Dallas

"A meal that arrived without the expected ramekin of shredded cheese for fajitas spawned a viral tweet from the diner’s husband and transformed the patron into an internet meme, producing widespread jokes, social-media dunking, and sympathetic commentary about the pressures on struggling restaurants during the pandemic." - Amy McCarthy

‘Cheese Wife’ Becomes a Meme After Husband’s DFW Restaurant Service Complaint Tweet Goes Viral | Eater Dallas

"A now-viral social media post showed a woman waiting forlornly beside a plate of untouched beef fajitas because shredded cheese had not arrived after roughly 18 minutes; the image and accompanying complaint—tagging the restaurant—were widely mocked for poor timing amid the pandemic and were later deleted. The husband who posted it has a history of public rants about local businesses; he has since acknowledged the original tweet was dumb and badly timed, said they are longtime regulars, deleted related retweets, and attempted to contact the restaurant to apologize." - Brittanie Shey

Google
Excellent food! I had the fish ceviche, huge portion very tasty. The service was very good too. The team worked well keeping our drinks/waters full. The fact that everyone gets a salsa is a great way to start.

Google
This place always has the best food and amazing drinks. Do yourself a favor and try the mambo taxi margarita. The fajita meat is always top-quality and very tender. The outdoor patio is really nice with a large area for kids to run around and play and grown-ups to enjoy themselves!

Google
The Pollo Moderno was great. I love this location in Watters Creek. Nice patio with a large outdoor space. Amazing healthy options and a good place to take your family or friends.

Google
Mi Cocina in Allen has a nice ambience and a lively vibe, perfect for a fun evening out. I really enjoyed the Mambo Taxi—it was strong and tasty. The appetizers were delicious too, and everything came out fresh and quick. Great place to hang out with friends or relax after a long day.

Google
What a gem! We knew we were in for a fantastic experience. From the Manager, Christopher, who treated us like old friends and family to Roman, our server, who was spot on and very friendly; this place is a must for Allen, Texas. Oh, and the food was great too :) I would recommend this to anyone!

Google
Julian was our server tonight and the service was absolutely perfect. He treated my family very well and gave us open and welcoming energy. I had the brisket quesadillas and they were delicious. my son had chicken quesadillas with rice and beans and I think it’s safe to say he enjoyed it very much. There were two flies that seemed to enjoy our table but we were by the door so it didn’t bother us too much. Absolutely will be returning to this restaurant

Google
Never disappointed when coming here. We love the attentiveness of Alex Yerena and Valdomero. They treat us like family. Always return and bring more people with us for that reason. Good is always delicious and their drinks as well.

Lily G.

Google
Erika was probably the best server I’ve had here in years. She was so nice and polite and checked on us just the right amount of times! This lady needs all the raises!!

Yelp
Great place for a good time. Came with our pup and sat on the patio. I loved the attention the staff gave to my little fur baby, service was good & food was great. Highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, large clean space, but super bland food. The tortillas were undercooked for the enchiladas, the flavors were all very one note, not enough spice or even salt.
google avatar

Drovian08 ..

Yelp
Had a mango margarita, flautitas and mico burrito. Food was great, service was awesome and vibe was popping. My girlfriend and I had late supper out on the patio (our dog was with us) and had a good time. I like that patio is dog friendly, the staff gave our pup lots of love and attention and water for him. Def would recommend.

Yelp
Bday brunch spot! It hit the spot for sure. We sat on the patio and ambiance was amazing. It was a beautiful day and they had tv's outside which added a nice touch. Our server was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I had the shrimp tacos with queso and chips and a mambo taxi. They also sang for my bday and I got a complimentary dessert.

Yelp
Honestly it's a sad looking Mi Cocina when you walk in but the food and service is fantastic. I love this Tex-Mex chain and this one is in Watters Creek Village by the Allen Convention Center. The Rico Salad is nostalgic for me - I get it with salsa dresssing on the side. The chips are crispy and not salty. The queso con chile is liquid-y and gooey. There's a gorgeous patio for outdoor seating and the inside is large. Separate bar area. You know you're in Texas when the waitress asks if you want a Diet Coke to go. The service is truly spectacular. It was pretty quiet when I went on a Monday night and had to wait a second before a hostess came. Solid food - not the nicest Mi Cocina I've been to in terms of decor, but the food is the same quality as always!

Yelp
A bit if a noisy atmosphere so if you're trying to catch up with a friend, might not be a good spot for that. If it's your birthday, however, this place has singing waiters and fun atmosphere. While we were eating dinner about 3 people celebrated their birthdays! Our waiter was very attentive and gave us a spot in the corner but the whole restaurant is med to high noise level. The food came out relatively quickly after we ordered and was scrumptious. I loved the chips and salsa for the table. The chips looked rustic, were crisp and warm.

Yelp
The best of texas customers service 5 star food 10 star Friendly, clean and very tasty food Overall nice 10 star

Yelp
This is the spot to get mambo taxis! I haven't been here in ages but went for a visit here recently and actually enjoyed the food. Not sure why others give it a low rating but for tex mex food, this place does the job! The staff was nice and the restaurant is a lot more spacious on the inside than it looks on the outside. I didn't get a chance to order any entrees this time but all the appetizers we ordered were good. I def recommend for happy hour. Love their cocktail menu! And a plus because, it is is a family friendly place.

Angela M.

Yelp
Jose G. is an excellent server. Great food and great service! Fantastic food... Try the poblano enchiladas

Yelp
Parking very accessible, the ambiance is loud, but accepting. The staff is very nice and very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was very flavorful. I ordered the 'Tacos De Papa'. There was so many options come with and empty stomach.
google avatar

Azsure D.

Yelp
Vegan options!! There are three full vegan plates on the menu. Additionally, there are many vegetarian options on the menu plus the wait staff indicated plates on the menu could be altered to be meatless. I had the Tacos De Papa. Check the pic- this plate is huge. I could not finish it. I really enjoyed the meal. It starts with mushrooms marinated in red sauce. They are on some potato slices on little corn tortillas. These babies are piled high with deliciousness. Grape tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, and crisps. It's just a refreshing set if flavors while dining companions enjoyed Tex Mex favorites. Everyone was happy and enjoyed the evening. It was super loud, so we had to work to hear each other. #vegan #plantbased

Yelp
Food was delicious and came out quick. Our server, Josie, took amazing care of our large party. Everyone had their correct order & full drinks, the whole time. Even our kids who had multiple sippy cups!! She was so attentive to all of us. We will definitely be back with our group dinners. Josie made our night. The food was phenomenal, as usual.

Yelp
Mambo taxi the best but Karla's service is amazing. We had great time celebrating our anniversary and she make it be special. The chicken manas tacos is my favorite. Thanks Karla.
google avatar

Saida Y.

Yelp
I went here with a group of friends & the food was nice and refreshing. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very nice. They had a special with the margaritas and those things were strong, but still very good! The food had good flavor and the portions were big, and I loved their ceviche. I'd definitely recommend coming here & I'll be back the next time I'm in Dallas.

D A.

Yelp
If you pay $11 for a bowl of soup, you expect an adult size bowl not a slurp. They sent me something that was barely a cold cup of soup. There is a 4oz salsa container for reference.
google avatar

Steve E.

Yelp
Our server was Alejandro; he was terrific. When asked, he made drink & dinner recommendations. The food was delicious, the ambiance great and the cost was reasonable.

Yelp
I had the Deluxe 57... It looked good tasted average but my dish came out cold so I ordered another dish and it wasn't much better...very disappointed...

Yelp
Good food, good service. Ambiance is nice. Price is decent. Staff is welcoming And friendly. Will return.

Yelp
Loud, not my favorite salsa, but the brisket tacos are to die for. Absolutely amazing service and ingredient quality

Yelp
Not up to par today. Server was not attentive and food was almost cool. Normally one our favorite spots. I know Cinco day but still. We will be back ....

Yelp
I was so pleased to see fish on the menu! I have gained weight after covid and can't get it off so I've been avoiding Tex-Mex for 3 years, lol. But my sister and I were meeting for lunch and she had a very long drive in from the country so I let her pick the restaurant. I figured I'd find something light on the menu but this fish - it was absolutely delicious! But let me start at the beginning. I joined my sis who was already seated in a booth. It was early, not even 12pm on a Friday. The restaurant was not yet filling up, so I wondered why it took a few minutes for anyone to come to our table. When Jairo finally did, he apologized, so I let him off the hook. :) He asked if we'd like something to drink and I chose the Italian Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio $13. It was very good. I only found one type of fish on the menu, which I thought strange but was eager to try something refreshing in this heat. My sis ordered her 'usual' salad, which looked really good - lots of green lettuce but she said they forgot the avocado. It was topped with fajita meat and she loves it. But was still disappointed about the lack of avocado. My dish was perfect. The rice was awesome, it was NOT plain white rice, I forgot what it was but I loved it. The fish was cooked perfectly and the vegetables - oh my goodness! Unfortunately - or fortunately in this case, I never eat all my food, so I had enough to take home for later. I usually eat Tex-Mex in a Latin restaurant but this fish will be my go-to for next time. My compliments to the chef and Jairo was great! We liked the scan to pay option - less work for Jairo, I hope. He is an excellent server.

Yelp
We've been dining at this Mi Cocina location for over a decade. The staff are friendly, food is always good, and drinks are consistent every time. Homero at the bar is an excellent bartender and his service exceeds expectations. This place is an Allen staple!

Lorena T.

Yelp
I went to eat at Mi Cocina Allen and you had a great service our waitress Angelica was great she give us options about the food and drinks we really enjoyed very good service and atmosphere

Yelp
Love this place! Great food & drinks and Jocelyn gave us great service! Will be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
We enjoyed ourselves. The drinks were our favorite part. The waiters were nice and helpful. It was a little loud but not a problem. Only real issue was the air conditioning vent slowly dripping over the table.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Dined in for the first time in this location, the new remodeled patio looks amazing! Our server Roman took such great care of us, will definitely be back and ask for him!

Yelp
I was in the area and came here for dinner with some coworkers. It was very busy, but we didn't have to wait for any tables to free up. I ordered the Cocina Changa - Beef. While waiting, there was complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa had a bit of a kick to it which I enjoyed. I also liked how everyone had their own personal salsa dish. While it wasn't too long of a wait, all the entrees didn't come at the same time. My meal tasted good and I had a lot leftover. I was only able to finish half of the stuffed tortilla and got the rest to go. The portion size and overall taste was worth the price paid. It was also interesting to note that the receipts have a QR code for mobile payment as an option. If I'm in the area again for work, I wouldn't mind coming back here.

Abigail T.

Yelp
The service was phenomenal!!! Goose was so attentive towards our needs as a group and made us feel so welcome and like family. Goose is such an impactful member of the team!!! I also loved my rice and chicken it was so yummy!!! Friendly staff, nice environment.

Yelp
Someone recommended Mi Cocina to me, and my husband and I tried it. I had the Cocina Platter which is an appetizer sampler. It was really good, and I would get it again. The atmosphere and service were great as well.

Travis S.

Yelp
Josie is the best waitress we have ever had! The food and drinks are second to none. We will be back soon!

Timothy D.

Yelp
Joined my buddy for a late lunch and Angelica was awesome, friendly, fast and helpful with the menu. Keep up the great work.

Jenn W.

Yelp
This Mi Cocina restaurant is my favorite! The manager, Jonathan, is amazing! The food is always delicious. My favorites are the fresh salsa and tortillas, brisket quesadillas and mixed steak/chicken fajitas! The patio has a relaxing view of a beautiful tree and small pond. Perfect for a Sunday brunch. Highly recommend this one!
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
Came back on the patio with the pup again. Everything went smoothly and had a great waiter named Mondo! He was fast! Grabbed my drink Water and even brought some chips and salsa in about 30 seconds LOL! The drinks here are really good and the service is great. The food is kind of like upper scale cafeteria food though. I'm not sure if this is at all locations or just this one but if it wasn't for the drinks and the chips and salsa maybe the ceviche I'm not sure if I would come back.

Yelp
Bad experience. We waited for a table for 2 of us 15 min longer than the expected wait time (total wait time 55 min). It was Friday night, so okay. During our whole 55 min wait, 2 tables in the bar pushed together were being used by servers to put dirty dishes on. A customer asked the hostess if someone could buss them, as the bar area is first come first serve. She waived him off saying yes, but not intending to call anyone to do it. Finally, we were called to be sat. We passed 3 empty 2-seat tables and an entirely empty section of at least 6 tables near the back by the restrooms. We were sat amongst the empty tables, like a dirty secret. Probably bc we weren't wearing Tommy Bahama shirts and carrying Louis bags. Upon being sat, we recived chips and salsa rather quickly...but not from our server. Our server took several minutes to arrive. He took our drink order and ran away before we could order appetizers. The restaurant was loud, so really couldn't complain that he didn't hear us yelling "sir" at his back. I ordered a mambo limousine, simply bc the name of it made me laugh. They seem to have pre-made drinks in the back...mambos, margaritas...to keep the bartender from running wild. My mambo came out fast from the back. Was pretty good for a pre-made. It was when we ordered a mojito, that we noticed it took the most time and our server had to run to the front. It wasn't made well. The shrimp brochetta we finally ordered as an sppetizee did in deed have 4 jumbo shrimps. I hated how much cheese and creama they topped onto them. But, I figured out why on my 2nd shrimp. It was so fishy tasting, I couldn't eat another bite of it. Yuck! My entree was the El Ray. Combo platter of pork tamale, cheese enchilada and beef taco. This platter took the award for worst Mexican food plate I've eaten. The taco was dripping grease from first bite. The topping they proved (lettuce, tomato, cheese) was topped with the creama...which has no discernible flavor mind you). The beef was seasoned well, but taco shell was a bit stale. The tamale was loaded with pork, but did not have any sauce on top (menu doesn't state that). Worst of all was the cheese enchilada. The plate was room temperature, therefore the enchilada wasn't hot. The cheese had congealed (much like the cheese on the shrimp brochetta that we paid $13 for). The chili con carne on top wasn't enough to even save it. Gross. Although I boxed my leftovers, I left them there... didmt want to have that experience again.

Yelp
Quick friendly lunch service. Had the guacamole appetizer, the grouper verde, and a topo Chico. Everything tasted great. The server went out of his way to make me a special hot salsa with chile de Arbol salsa with diced Serrano peppers. Hit the spot.

Yelp
7/9/22: We arrived for an early dinner. We sat at a table in the bar area and it wasn't crowded. Jose was our host, and he was great. We ordered a shrimp ceviche and a enchilada dinner with fajita chicken. Their chips were thick and crunchy, and the salsa had a nice kick to it. I had a couple of bottled beers, and she had a Margarita Dilemma, then switched to a jalapeño Margarita. Jose was very attentive. The bar area was a little busy, but not overly so. The area was very clean and there were TV's throughout the bar. The food and drink presentation very pretty good. We would definitely eat here again.

Ella J.

Yelp
Wow, I love Mi Cocina. Their food is always so delicious and filling. It is always so hot, fresh and cooked with lots of love. I never leave disappointed. Their service is always above and beyond. I have NEVER had bad service there, but today I was extremely happy with our waiter Shawn. He was so attentive, outgoing, happy, pleasant and really made my experience that much better. They also just remodeled the outside and wow is it amazing. It's so cozy and heaters for outside too!! We will be going back and asking for Shawn!!!

Yelp
Every single staff member is so kind, helpful and makes you feel so welcome here. The atmosphere is relaxing and makes you want to come right back after paying. It's a very home-y feeling here! Staff is like family. Mambos are delicious and strong. Food is consistent & always perfect. For recommendations: Sunset Style Fajitas, Tacos MiTierra, Shrimp Brochette, Mamas Tacos, Tacos Habana, Rico Salad, Yellow Queso, guacamole. For spice lovers - ask for a side of the Serranos Y Limon, and Molchaete Salsa. I've been a regular at this Mico for 12+ years and will continue to dine here weekly as long as the doors are open.
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
Not good for large parties. They struggled to accommodate our party of 12. Instead of holding a table while another opened up to push them together they continuously took parties of 4 to 6 ahead of us. Normally a restaurant will take a reservation for a large party even if they don't take reservations, not this one. Our family of 12 waited for over an hour, standing. 1936 hrs arrived 2047 hrs seated Waitress nice enough. Apologized profusely for wait. Had a hard time getting order right. Food was good. Table of 12 without drinks came to $375 with tip.

Yelp
Saily was sweet and delightful! The atmosphere was terrific and the food delicious! It was soooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!

Yelp
Lunch today... enchiladas very greasy and burnt on the bottom of the tortilla. Service was good... food not so much

Yelp
One of my favorite Tex-Mex restaurants. Food is very delish; great quality meats and menu items and the staff is top notched.

Yelp
My friend and I went for lunch August 5th. We were seated quickly which was good. However, when we were seated it wasn't properly cleaned. There was food on the floor under our table, there was a dead fly on the mirror behind us and the waitress was horrible, no smile. She never came back to the table to take our order after 10 minutes or more. At that time we decided to leave. This is the 2nd bad experience I've had at that location and I'm not willing to give it a 3rd try.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know why this place is always so crowded...I had a horrible experience. we went on Friday night around 6:30, expected a 30-45 minute wait and it took around 50 minutes, no big deal. after waiting outside for 30 minutes we decided to see if there was enough room inside to wait, there was so we stood next to the doors and bar entrance. while we were there we noticed 2 tables in the bar that kept collecting dishes...why wasn't anyone cleaning them? there's an hour long wait and you have 2 tables ready to go but the waiter is too lazy to clean up? on top of that they kept collecting dishes. we were called after about 20 minutes of waiting inside and on our way to the table we passed 2 tables that were open with seating for 2. why weren't these used? IT'S AN HOUR WAIT, WHY WEREN'T THESE USED??? we got to our table in the back of the restaurant near the patio and quickly realized we were the only ones there. on top of that, there were 6-8 tables around us not being used...WHY??? it's an hour wait!!! we were first uncomfortable at being the only ones back there but no biggie, the tables on both sides of us were dirty, someone will be seated shortly, right? WRONG!!! it wasn't until 30-40 minutes after sitting down that they finally sat another couple next to us. we felt like they were banishing us, leaving us to be forgotten. after 15 minutes (we had already ordered drinks and food by this point) one of the men in a light blue button up noticed we looked unhappy and went to the back, he came back with a lady dressed like a possible manager. she made a point to come directly to us and ask how we were doing and I told her we felt really awkward sitting alone and she looked around and offered no sympathy, I said, "it sucks to be honest, and it's cold with the vent above us." she said she would turn the air down/off and did within 30 seconds, this is the ONE THING keeping me from a 1 Star review. onto drinks...my wife had a mambo limousine and it was pretty good for a frozen drink. I started with water. about 3/4 through my dinner I ordered a mojito that took 15 minutes to get and it was probably the worst I've ever had, basically tasted like sprite with extra lime squeezed into it. now the food...we started with shrimp brochette and they were pretty big shrimp which is always a plus, they weren't the best though, tasted a little dirty or oceany. the crema that came with them was bland as bland can get and offered nothing to compliment the shrimp, it was pointless. the guacamole that came with the shrimp was good with chips but I don't understand who puts guac on their shrimp...weird in my opinion. I was disappointed I didn't see quesadillas on the menu but no worries, I'll get a chimichanga...NOPE, the descriptions says beef or chicken but doesn't specify if it's fajita meat or ground beef/shredded chicken...I HATE THIS. don't make me ask, I don't want to get my hopes up for fajita only to be told it's not...this has happened many places. yes, I understand I could ask for fajita but I'm at the point in my life where I'm tired of asking restaurants about menu items...they should have better descriptions, PERIOD!!! I ended up getting the chicken sunset enchiladas and wife got a combination plate that had a cheese enchilada, pork tamale and beef taco. the chicken in the enchilada was okay but the chile/cilantro queso that was on top was also bland and offered nothing to compliment the enchilada. my wife's taco was so greasy it was unappetizing, the tamale had no sauce, just dry...and there wasn't enough sauce from the enchilada to help the tamale. the cheese inside the enchilada was NOT melted. the outer portion near the tortilla was but the inside was still pieces of shredded cheese...unacceptable. all in all we felt the food did not equal the price nor the crowd. we won't be back...maybe if a family member wants to have a celebration dinner there but we won't go on our own. service wasn't bad but not good. it would have been nice to have been asked if we'd like refills instead of motioning to the waiter we needed him. if you're a fan, cool...we're not. I understand how it is, we all like what we like.

Yelp
have only been after remodel. the patio was beautiful. we had a problem with flies but our server was so nice, they have mini table fans they bring out for you. loved the atmosphere. Tex mex will always be my favorite cuisine-loved everything and had leftovers to take home.

Glynn G.

Yelp
We always have a great experience here and our service is over the top! thank you Homero for your hospitality care and attention to detail. We drive past another MiCocina just to come see you.

Yelp
My hubs and I love a good mambo taxi and today we were lucky enough to be served by Emilio who was amazing! Tbh its not my first choice of places but because he was our server I would 100% go back just for his great personality and service! We found ourselves asking what his schedule was just to make sure we can get back to see him.

Yelp
I do not usually rate chain restaurants, but we went here to use a gift card last night, and it's adorable! We will totally go back for the atmosphere alone. The patio faces a cute courtyard with water views (as opposed to many places in general facing a parking lot or concrete jungle). The patio tables were spaced out nicely and plenty ample. The restrooms are nicely located for convenience whether you dine inside or outside. I like the private stalls! I was impressed they make people wait outside for COVID-friendly purposes versus everyone crammed in the lobby. Everyone I saw inside was spaced out well too. As usual, the mambo taxis were on point, and you only need a couple to feel just right. :) Side note - I would NOT recommend the skinny margarita. That's usually my go-to for Tex Mex, but it tasted like watered down lemonade. My waitress told me their skinny rita is "different and Italian." What?! She knew I didn't like it as I was politely asking for a mambo quickly after receiving the rita. She didn't charge me for it, so we tipped her extra as that was nice of her. I love their fresh tasting salsa, queso blanco, guac, and Rico salad! Mmmmm! We parked in the parking garage next door since street parking is limited.

Yelp
Beef fajitas were hammered and served with store bought flour tortillas. Flies were buzzing our indoor table during the entire meal. Staff were pleasant but our waitress was inattentive. She had a great attitude, she was just inexperienced and uncertain of what to do. Management really needs to focus on developing their people and getting rid of flies.
