Yelp
this place is delicious, not even going to qualify "for des moines" or whatever. it's good, full stop. honestly not loving the food scene in the area, but this is definitely a bright spot. it's sort of hole in the wall in a strip mall, with no big flashy signage, but man do they crank out some tasty food. a few years back, i had discovered this place and thoroughly enjoyed it. coming back this year, i was a little worried my memory was flawed or might fail me, but it was exactly as i had remembered.
sat down and our order was quickly taken. there's a lot to try on the menu, and we tried our best to try as much as we could. we got the empanadas, one chicken one beef - these are deceptively big because they are super loaded with filling, but delicious nonetheless. also tried the yucca and potato patties filled with cheese, both are good but v similar so i don't think you need to try one of each. got the potatoes serrano, which were like roasted potatoes with maybe chorizo or some kind of sauce and cheese, also good.
for mains, we all got the hornado con mote. it's roasted/pulled pork with rice, hominy, and a tomato/onion salad. the portion is HUGE! love the hominy, i so rarely get a chance to order it, so i had to make sure to order again here. the pork is juicy and flavorful. also tried the plantains in pretty much every fashion they serve it, sweet, tostones, and chips. all good.
the service is quick and v friendly. felt bad we couldn't eat all our food because we ordered so much and the portions were huge. adding this as a definite go-to whenever i'm in town.
