Mi Rancho Market (B- ) : Not bad, but not good enough for the "revisit" list
I've been wanting to try out this place given their tacos Mi Rancho Market tacos at $1.99 (al pastor / carne asada) are significantly cheaper than TJ's at $3.25 (adobada / carne asada). Walking in with Penny, my daughter and her boyfriend, I was quite excited. There was no air-conditioning, lights were out, and our party seemed to be the only non-Mexican patrons - all good signs for good tacos! And with four of us, we got to try more things!
Carne asada fries (B ): Being Canadian, it was like a Mexican poutine! Seasonings & sauces were good, but the beef lacked crust. The fries were cooked nicely, but they're clearly frozen fries. Good, but quite far from "great."
For all the tacos, I think they use a different type of tortilla from what I'm used to. It's thicker, wetter, and significantly doughier and to me, that very much took away from every taco.
Al pastor taco (B- ): meat was seasoned quite nicely, but no crust making the overall experience a little flat. Significantly inferior to TJ's adobada.
Lengua (B- ): Super tender with good meat flavor, but again, too light on the seasoning. The lengua at TJ's was significantly better.
Chicharron on salsa verde (C ): My daughter's boyfriend suggested I try this, and when someone tells me to try, of course I go for it! I guess I had preconceived notions of what the pork belly would taste like, and this tasted very different. A hint of acidity, and it tasted a little gamey. Didn't hate it, but can't say I enjoyed it.
Overall, a fun experience, but there are other taco places I would prioritize over Mi Rancho Market.
