Why Does Texas Love the Grocery Store H-E-B So Much? | Eater

"Designed to serve Texas’s large Latinx population, this store concept emphasizes authentic Mexican grocery traditions with in-store masa factories and tortilla presses, Spanish-language services and staples like dulce de leche and Mexican wedding cookies, making it a culturally specific, full-service market for Latinx households." - Priya Krishna

First time going. It was really busy but I went on a Saturday. Plenty of options and you’re able to purchase drinks and food to eat before or during to enjoy during shopping. I wish i had a mi tienda closer to home.

Google
We love this place! After church we come here to have lunch. My kids find it really cool and love the atmosphere. The agua frescas and tamales de elote are my favorite combo. I wish it was closer to my home so I could do my grocery shopping.

I order trays of rice and beans ala charra always delicious and reasonably priced. I buy for our tailgate

Google
Don’t get corn in the cup inside the store, they are stingy with the cheese and the cup is small so it’s not worth it. Also, don’t get the chicken tamales inside, they are dry and it’s alot of masa. Everything else is okay.

This is the best grocery store I have ever been to! Imagine the world's best Latin market married an HEB and they had a kid who turned out to be the #1 draft pick in the NFL. That's what this store is. Freshest produce, cheese, bakery, cakes, deli, meats, seafood, Latin cheeses by the pound, and tortillas so fresh they were too hot to carry to my cart. And that's just the front of the store. Behind that is the biggest, best HEB you've ever been to. And they even have clothing souvenir stores with some awesome Latin inspired gear that I didn't even get a chance to look at. And on the way out, fresh elote in a cup in the parking lot. I can't believe I have lived in this area for a year and never been here till today. It was so absolutely crowded on a Sunday that it was tough to navigate but that was not even a tiny inconvenience. They had at least 20-25 checkout lanes open, and I don't think any of them were more than 3-4 carts each. I went to the express lane and checked out in under 5 minutes. I will only be shopping here for as long as I live in the area.

Love this place wish we had one in Ft. Worth!

Google
Went here on a Saturday, it was PACKED. Probably not the best time to visit if it's yoyr first time. I think H-E-B can make some upgrades/renovations to the supermarket, looks a bit on the rustic side. The staff however were amicable, professional and cultural and that's AMAZING! I absolutely love the variety of products, food and cultural vibe here.

Yelp
Yes and yes, go there! I had one of the coolest food and grocery shopping experiences here! I was able to get breakfast as I walked in some yummy Mexican tamales... some sweet bread, and get some grocery shopping done. There is so much to look at, lots of prepared foods, and a ceiling full of piñatas to choose from. I legit felt like a kid in a candy store. But with prepared foods and groceries!

Geneva C.

Yelp
I love to buy my vegetables and fruits here, great variety of foods to buy. want to request for them to consider opening up a store closer to us. there's a store that closed on Ella corner of 18th street. it used to be a food arama . just saying be nice.

Yelp
Hazardous at times to be waiting with the cashier to ring you up and getting hit with a kart cause they don't enforce people to stop coming in the wrong way.

Yelp
Great, clean store. Lots of items to choose from in the bakery. Everything looked really fresh - had to have been baked the same morning. I really enjoy their agua fresca counter. I counted at least 10 different drinks on this occasion. I ordered the nopal con apio y pina drink, and...it was okay. I didn't care for the apio in the drink. I think nopal con pina would make for a really interesting drink. Nonetheless, I got my vitamins in that day. Right off the freeway too, so I'm sure I will be back, the next time I am in the city.

Yelp
When Mi Tienda first opened in 2009 never could go in the store. but in 2019 I finally got over the fear of being in this store. but today was walking out of store when I noticed about solar eclipse but didn't look up but I did caught off guard about it and will got sick but I am better now. I know the store doesn't want to hear this review

Yelp
Mi Tienda, meaning "My Store" in Spanish is seriously MY kind of store! When a friend asked if I wanted to go to Mi Tienda, a Mexican grocery store owned by HEB, on a Saturday with her family, I said sure...not anticipating I'd be in for quite the adventure!! The prices are crazy "barato" (inexpensive) and the choices are plentiful! One of the greatest aspects for me is the cleanliness and organization. We ordered tacos de barbacoa from the deli and they were delicioso. We tried their refrescos de agua (I had "maracuya" which is passionfruit). Yummmmm! The have a bakery where you can order yummy bread, cakes and pastries, and have plenty readymade goodies. Excellent prices on produce too! I purchased some new "huaraches" (an authentic Mexican leather sandal) at one of the stores located inside. Yes, there's little stores within the store! Ask the sales clerk what your Mexican size is. You couldn't tell me I wasn't at a little Mexican mall, y'all! I don't know about anyone else, but the entire time I was here, I felt like I was on beautiful foreign soil. We purchased churros from a kind Mexican lady with a cart near the exit and they were the best churros I've ever tasted, people. Vanilla stuffed is a winner! She's serves them warm too...yasss! Never had them warm. I've clearly been deprived. Oh, and I really dig tamarindo covered apples, and I was able to find the tamarindo paste here so I can make them myself! Whoo hoo! HEB, this was a grand idea! I gotta come back for sure!

Yelp
This place was a lot less expensive than other H‑E‑B in upper North Texas. Very authentic and filled with Mexican culture!

Yelp
My husband placed an order for my cake 2 weeks before my birthday and when it was time to pick up there was no cake for me. Not only did they note the wrong date but how they could have one ready for me the next day. Very disappointed so I ended up choosing a cake from display since it was already payed for. When it was time to cut there was a hair on the first slice of cake that we cut.

Yelp
Place is dirty they don't seem to have management at this location or at least management that cares, from the parking lot being a mess, trash everywhere to the inside of the store a mess as well, need better management

Yelp
my mom always go to mi tienda every day and it's looks Iike and a HEB place I we'll give it fifth stars

Yelp
I think it's an amazing store. Not one I would frequent, but it's good to know it's around. My neighbor always talk about this store and the good deals she always get. Today we ventured out to explore it. It's like stepping into a Mexican city. The colors, the music, the food. Having spent so many years in a border town, it's kind of like a second culture to me. I was able to find tamarindos and guavas. A broom for $3, and the best agua fresca I've had in my life. Seriously, it was amazing. I did get more stuff. It's part of H-E-B so a lot of things I can find at my regular store. Whereas H-E-B has an area for pots and pans and anything household, this one has an assortment of Mexican pottery. The flower section is like an H-E-B one, but this one is filled with piñatas all over. It's like stepping into a Mexican town. Loved everything about it. It's an hour away for me, but if I'm ever in the area I wouldn't hesitate to stop by again.

Yelp
Aye caramba! This is such a weird experience shopping at this Mexican grocery! This grocery is actually run by HEB, so you know this isn't some Michoacana fly-by-night foreign grocer. This place is their specialty store for Mexican stuff. I was amazed by this store when I came in. Mariachi music and gritos blare over the speakers. There's not an inch of boring in this store- papel picado paper flags fly over the aisles, and flags of the various states of Mexico are flown over the registers. Each area of the store is like a mercado in Mexico- where there's the seafood vendor selling their wares, trying to get your attention. Their tortilla factory in the store cranks out the tortillas, and they have the largest selection of tortilla varieties I've ever seen. I got green tortillas! (yes, they're supposed to look that way!) Checking out the butcher shop, it goes on and on and on. They have a huge selection of meats, along with the weirder parts that you don't typically see in the store- pig heads, tongues, tripe, intestines. I was surprised to see that their coffee selection was pretty limited, considering that they have dozens of varieties of chorizo. I was amazed to see the section selling religious items, like statues of The Virgin Mary or Jesus on a cross, or shiny CDs to hang in your rear view mirror that have an image of St John. Prices are fair here. I've never seen such a selection of Mexican specialty items than this store. It's a pretty amazing assault on all the senses coming in here.

Yelp
My first time visiting the store was on last Friday (12/31/21) Although the store was packed I can say that I will be going back. I was impressed with the variety of groceries the store has to offer. I was able to find what I needed and much more.

Yelp
My favorite place to go shopping for my groceries it makes me feel like I'm back at home in Mexico

Yelp
So I saw this Mi Tienda on an IG post. We saw a huge Concha and we definitely wanted to go buy one. We arrived and headed straight to the bakery department. Super big Concha not on site. We came to the conclusion that they bake them and cut them up in slices. We so wanted a Texas size Concha. Store was full of different items as well as food stands inside. I was like a little kid just admiring everything inside the store. Fresh & Hot food counter, fruit & aguas frescas counter, extra large cheese counter, fresh tortilla counter, piñatas hanging inside, the Virgin Mary statues .

Yelp
Always fantastic. The variety of items, particularly in the meat and fresh dairy section is fantastic, as are the prepared foods.

Yelp
Great store. Tons of fresh produce! Lots of variety in tropical fruits. It's owned by H-E-B and I love H-E-B so this is great!!

Yelp
I love when I'm working North of Houston because Mi Tienda is on the way home. Of course, I had to stop to buy an "agua fresca." This time I had a cucumber/pineapple one which wasn't too sweet like those usually are. It was delicious. I noticed lemonade, plain pineapple, and mamey. The entrance during "social distancing" had red marks and more than one station for antibacterial gel. The aguas frescas area separated the customer and the staff with plexiglass. I was tempted to buy more than the drink. They had these attractive strawberries and cream in the same fruit drinks' station. And I splurged. They're pretty tasty. As opposed to before where pastries are self-serve with tongues, this time each piece is individually-wrapped in plastic. They had a log roll with cajeta in the cakes' display. It looked so good. It's too bad Mi Tienda is far. I haven't seen this type of cake at the sister HEB. Maybe sometimes, a trip to Mi Tienda might be worth it, even if it's far from home.

Yelp
Mi Tienda is more than a grocery store...it's a community! I check the specials all the time and it helps me shop on a budget. The selection on fruits and vegetables is almost always great. There are a few items that are cheaper to get at Costco, but almost always Mi Tienda will beat Walmart. I'm still looking for the best place to save money at the butchers counter. The prices on meats are still at Costco unfortunately. I love the quality of the limes, bell peppers, and strawberries. Milk is reasonably priced here, so it's cheaper to get milk here than going to Walmart or Costco. Another plus! Mi Tienda is technically an HEB store. So if you are using the Ibotta app to find instant rebates you can use your receipts to do so. Savings! Yes!!! English and Spanish are both used here, so for non-Spanish speakers, there's nothing to worry about. Enjoy the savings of shopping at Mi Tienda.

Yelp
Mi tienda es una joya escondida de un supermercado aquí en el área de Houston. Por supuesto, probablemente ya le sepas si puedes leer esté comentario. Mi Tienda is a great place to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables. If you're hungry and can't wait their is a great Cantina with grilled chicken, pork and beef with plenty of sides. They make their tamales, chicharrones and tortillas on site. It is large but certainly not as large as a major HEB. However what it lacks in size it more than makes up for it in having the stuff that you really want. From a bakery to fresh meats to grilled food, homemade products that suit diverse needs of its customers. How about a whole, fire roasted chicken for $7 or a dozen handmade tamales for $10. Although most of the staff is Hispanic they are friendly to gringos and Hispanics and they all readily speak English to assist you in your shopping experience. Hasta Luego ya'll.

Yelp
They sell tacos on the weekend close at 7pm. Got there at 6:40pm and they were just selling meat, no tacos.

Melisa R.

Yelp
I got food poisoning drinking the mixed berry drink. I wonder if they throw out the drink at the end of the day or simply keep refilling. I saw them refilling when the jug was 3/4 full.
google avatar

Yelp
Mexican-styled HEB. MT does not have all of the regular items an HEB has, but is definitely worth a stop for some Mexican goodies. We like the homemade tortilla chips, the Mexican sour cream, various types of cheese, homemade guacamole, chile and lime potato chips, and candy, such as the caramel-coated peanuts and coconut candy. On our last trip, my daughter and I grabbed some cheap plate lunches at the front of the store. She had a quesadilla that was filled with meat and I had the tasty barbecue chicken. The food here is delicious and some picnic tables are setup in the front of the store to enjoy your food. After we ate, we tried a fresh mamey fruit drink. This is a must-have. Sweet, creamy and delicious and served in a 32-ounce cup. Just outside the store, we have purchased delicious churros and corn in a cup. If there is a line, the corn is worth the wait. I have found basic HEB items at MT, but some items are hard to find. On my last trip, I tried to find some Mio water flavor drops, but MT did not have them. There were plenty of Mexican sodas, though.

Yelp
It was my first time in this store and found it to be super fun, they have everything from fresh fruit and veggies to piñatas and flowers to fresh baked daily bread, fruit infused waters, groceries, lunch on the go and a place to pay your bills. This place has so much to offer. Staff is really friendly, there is plenty of parking around the store and facilities are well kept.

Maria M.

Yelp
Bought a agua fresca and noticed they also sell elotes. I asked for one but they didn't have any Chile so they offered salsa Valentina instead. Would not recommend.

Jesus F.

Yelp
Why don't they have Apple Pay or contactless payment, it being such a huge store not having that is weird it'd be something essential for your customers
google avatar

Rebecca A.

Yelp
The variety and products is excellent as well as the prices. However, the checkout needs extreme improvement. I waited 10 minutes before asking to speak to a manager. The lady in front of me did not have the right WIC items and the checker called someone to replace them. Like how does the checker think it's okay to do that. Just have the lady get out of the line and get them herself. I was so anxious because I had to be at work and this was making me late. I asked for the manager and the head cashier came (I know the difference) she's trying to check her stuff and receipt and after complaining to her about the time I was waiting (15 minutes by now) she decided to move the customer and I was finally able to check out. AND to make matters worse I was missing items when I got to work :/ The reason I'm giving them a one is because this is not the first time I had this problem at checkout. First picture taken at 12:53 (I had already waited long) second picture take at 1:03

Yelp
I love this store. Its a little out of my way but well worth it. Its always clean has just about everything you can need. From piñatas to grills to prepared meals and to go food. The only observation is that if you get anything from the bakery it.has to be paid in the bakery
google avatar

Brandy H.

Yelp
I love the freshly made flour & corn tortillas! (Little tortilla factory inside, so cool!) Fresh produce with super great prices. This is the place to come for all of your Hispanic dishes. They have everything you need. They even have a yummy roasted corn stand outside & bbq fajitas on the weekends plus the music is always pumping like your at the club. (Lol) Fresh juice bar, spanish bakery & restaurant inside. Pinatas for the kid birthdays. This store is always overwhelmingly packed though, no matter what time of day. (no exaggeration) Wednesday are the best days to go when it's not so crowded. Employees are very friendly & helpful. Except the security guy that drives around outside, he is a creep in my book!
google avatar

Edwin R.

Yelp
One of the best supermarkets in Houston for Spanish products the atmosphere is great here. This place is huge there's nothing you can't find they have it all here fresh seafood fresh meat market fresh deli cold cuts fresh bakery not mention homemade tortillas hot and fresh in the bag amazin taste to them. Love coming here.
google avatar

Larry R.

Yelp
Try coming during the week, Tuesday-Friday, their are not a lot of people and its a very very high possibility that you will find everything in stock and much better customer service, avoid Saturday-Monday. Take it from a worker. For the holidays, please try to buy everything ahead of time, it's a madhouse with people rushing the last couple of days. -Thank you for shopping at Mi Tienda.

Juliana M.

Yelp
Best Grocery store ever. I love everything about it. Fresh food, vegetables& drinks. Great deals too!

German A.

Yelp
"Mi Tienda" is Spanish for "my store." This is a store that directly and stereotypically caters to Hispanic cultures. That is the entire gimmick of this chain of stores, so dont expect anything else than biased Hispanic treatment on matters. There's carts outside, with fruit stands outside, music blasting from a preamp loudspeaker. This store has everything inside, rivals a Walmart, but very Hispanic items only. There's a bakery and sweet bread you pick out yourself. A Refresqueria with Aguas frescas, serving fresh juices like lemonade, etc. A restaurant style deli, only barbequed meats and sides, tacos to order. There's a tortilla store, guacamole stand, fish market, fruits, meats, even commercial tortilla dough manufacturing. It is always packed with people here, and everyone walks super slow because everyone is staring at everything. You can transfer money to Central America, there's a bank, a jersey store, a optometrist, everything. No 5 star because it's always packed, at the tellers, which is a good job for them, I guess. Go see it, it's very educational to experience. Almost nobody will speak English here, so be aware of that.

Estrellita S.

Yelp
I'm glad its around my area and it's amazing. And I love the feeling when you walk in of a little part of Mexico we definitely need more variety of Mexican products

A T.

Yelp
I stopped at this store to get a delicious jello cake that I've purchased here before. I asked one of the bakery employees if they had any jello cakes because I didn't see any available in the case. The employee at the register asked a co-worker too go and look in the back because they may have one. The individual looked at me and shrugged her shoulders without going to look in the back and said no we don't have any. Horrible horrible customer service. I won't be returning after this experience.
google avatar

Leydeen M.

Yelp
Worse customer service. I stopped to purchase a money order. Their hours posted are from 8:00 AM to. I arrived exactly at 8:00, there were already two people in front of me. The first cashier was busy with another employee and once she was done with her, she left. A second cashier opened at 8:03 by then there was already two others lined behind me. First transaction took 5 minutes and the second one apparently one cashier was not enough and took more than 15 minutes of them joking and laughing and talking.
google avatar

Rewa L.

Yelp
I love to do my produce shopping here. If you can tune out the musoc blasting , you will also. As a sister store to HEB, they cater towards the latin market. The grilled chicken is mouthwatering scrumptious.
google avatar

Ray L.

Yelp
What a store! Lots of stuff catered to foreign nationals.produce selection is huge...alltypes of items not typically available at a regular grocery store. Staff are relatively freindly but worthless to me in that none speak english.i gave it 4 stars based on that and also its in a bad neighborhood. Be sure to keep valuables out of site and lock vehicle. Guards do patrol the parking lot.worth going to for selection price and something different.this store is owned by heb catering to mexkin market.

Francisco P.

Yelp
The manager "Irma" is so bad , get her out of there as soon as possible Applied as checker and she said I had no cashier experience even tho I do . She stated "do you know the fruit codes you would have to put in?" No but that's why the word training exists right ? And let's not act like it would be hard to know the codes jajaja. Offered me a job pushing carts like I've never had a job before, wasted my time going to the second interview, she should be the one pushing Carts. Quit wasting peoples times and disrespecting them .
google avatar

Raul M.

Yelp
I often stop into this store when we are visiting the Inlays. We stop in here to buy some beer or other items for our BBQ. I have never done any full grocery shopping here although I think I would enjoy it. It's hard to imagine a grocery store that anyone would enjoy being in, but Mi Tienda is one that I love to go to. There are so many delicious snacks and foods at the entrance of the store that you will spend lots of time just deciding what to get. They have Pollos Asados, Liquados, Aguas, Raspas, Elote, Fruta and so much more. They even have tables where you can sit down and enjoy your treats. Another reason why I like to go here is because of their selection in Mexican beer. you can usually always find the beers you want fully stocked in the beer isle. Like I said earlier, I don't shop here for groceries, but I sure wouldn't mind. Especially since they have some good Mexican music playing loudly on the speakers. :) The only problem I have ever had here is finding parking. It can get pretty packed here on the weekends.
google avatar

George F.

Yelp
Mi Tienda is a cultural experience that every Houstonian should stop and experience at least once. From the fresh chickens to the hot tortillas straight from the oven, the entire store experience is a cultural delight. The staff seems a little young when I'm in the store, but the displays are always so well labeled and product is so clearly paced that you never really need to ask anyone for anything. But, if you do, staff is always near by. This location is ALWAYS packed, so parking is always annoying. I you do nothing else you have to stop by the smoothie bar or the fresh juice bar..... Joy in a cup!
google avatar

Albert S.

Yelp
Thr food here is extremly cheap and delicious. Breakfast can be bought for $2.99 it includes rice, beans and two breakfast entrees mainly egg mixed with a meat. Lunch is $4.99. Food is fresh. My only concern is the parking lot it is always crowded and break ins are common in this area. Other than that it is a great place to get cheap groceries and breakfast/lunch. You can buy a whole cooked/grilled chicken for 5 dollars.

Yelp
97,000 sq.-ft. store (more than twice the size of the first Mi Tienda) from what I heard. "Mi Tienda provides a unique, Latino-style market shopping experience with rows of fresh produce, a Panadería and a full-service Carnicería," said Juan Alonso, Houston Regional Vice President for Mi Tienda. "Mi Tienda provides a unique, Latino-style market shopping experience with rows of fresh produce, a Panadería and a full-service Carnicería," said Juan Alonso, Houston Regional Vice President for Mi Tienda. Mi Tienda is a Cocina, where customers can order freshly made pollo asado, carnitas, costillas, combination plates, tamales, tacos, tortas, sopas, menudo, pozole, chile rellenos, and chicharrones. Customers can enjoy these home-made dishes right at the store in the Mi Tienda dining area. I think its also awesome since the location is right off the freeway on Eastex Freeway (59) you cant miss it. If you coming from downtown up North 59 then you just have to exit Little York Rd and as soon as you do a U turn on feeder road you will see it back of Chevron Station .

Yelp
Absolutely love coming here. I always go for the candy aisle, as it's hard to find the mexican candy in stores such as walmart, target, etc. Whenever there's spending money, a trip will consist of chicken, jarritos, pan dulce, tortillas, and other goodies. Prices are great as well! I try to visit on weekdays, as there are less people than usual. And when you have the chance, get a large cup of corn outside from the stand. It does not disappoint! I say get the large because the small is more like an extra small cup.

Yelp
Agua Fresca yum!!!! It was nice to have a drink in their sitting area and people watch. I had one with pineapple and celery, also tried the watermelon and cucumber water.
