"Before the COVID-19 crisis hit, Mi Zacatecas, Cecilia Chairez’s tiny Mexican restaurant, was one of the Oakland’s dining scene’s great success stories. The only spot in the Bay Area specializing in the cuisine of the north-central Mexican state of Zacatecas, the restaurant had amassed a large and loyal following, despite its remote location in deep East Oakland, entirely on the merits of Chairez’s homestyle cooking: her slow-cooked stews, her enormous handmade tortillas, and, especially, her fat, freshly griddled gorditas — widely hailed as the best in the city." - Luke Tsai

"Mi Zacatecas, a small taqueria operated by Cecilia Chairez, offers unique Zacatecan gorditas and other regional specialties. Located in Deep East Oakland, it draws customers from afar, particularly Zacatecan immigrants seeking the flavors of home. The restaurant features a variety of Zacatecan dishes, including chicharrón en salsa roja, pork and nopales stew, beef barbacoa, and Zacatecan-style chiles relleno. Despite some compromises due to local ingredient availability, Chairez aims to familiarize customers with Zacatecan cuisine and make it popular." - Luke Tsai

Very homemade, special food. The owner runs this place and made us feel at home. Delicious, handmade food and great salsas too.

Google
Delicious! The gorditas are a must try, especially the nopales with pork. Al pastor is tasty too for tacos or whatever. Homemade tortillas are perfect - actually all the food here tastes homemade. We will definitely be back.

So good! Came in on my lunch and had a wonderful experience. Can’t beat a homemade tortilla paired with amazing service. Unfortunately she was in the process of making her spicy salsa (just means I’ll have to come back to have some) so I didn’t get to try it, but being the sweet human she was she grilled up some chile serranos for me! If you love authentic Mexican food then this is the place to be! Will for sure be coming back.

Google
Came here with some friends early on a Sunday morning for some menudo and barbacoa, which were delicious. The tortillas are my favorite part honestly! The owner is so nice and attentive. My friends used to get food from her when she was operating out of her backyard, so glad she has a brick and mortar. I will try my best to come out to Oakland more often!

Google
Excellent Mexican food with good vegetarian options. Their veggie burrito is one of the best in the entire East bay, and their gorditas are absolutely delicious. The chips and salsa are also perfection. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the restaurant is very clean and bright, and their prices are very reasonable especially for the high quality of the food. I will definitely be back, frequently.

Google
We have followed the owner from her previous location because the food and warm service are the best. The handmade corn tortillas, yummy pintos, and pork and nopales keep me coming back on a regular basis! Oh, and the horchata is homemade and not sticky sweet- never had better.

Great local Mexican restaurant with courteous clerks and scrumptious food. Definitely recommend to everyone passing by.

Wonderful food, excellent service. Almost feels like you got invited over for dinner.

Yelp
I've been waiting to come here for a while now! Today randomly my mom called me at work and said that if I've ate lunch already, which I said no. I suggested this place and she said okay. I went in with no expectations, but left with alot of satisfaction! The lady who took our order was extremely nice and welcoming! I ordered a gordita de chicharron and a taco de Barbacoa. I'm from Mexico City so the taste of the gordita was different than what I'm used to, but the flavor was yummy and very fulfilling! My mom also had the tacos de Barbacoa - those were super yummy and the portion was great! The meat was tender and savory. What I loved the most was the handmade tortillas! I will definitely be coming back with y family!

Yelp
Best menudo around. Clean, and full of flavor, the tripe is the perfect melt-in-your mouth level of gender. Excellent gorditas as well.

Regina M.

Yelp
Delicious food in a casual setting. Homemade style Mexican food with standout gorditas featuring tortillas made on site. The owner/chef is friendly and welcoming. So glad we came here today, we will definitely be back!

Yelp
HELL YESSSSSSS! THIS PLACE IS IT for me when it comes to best manuedo ive had yet! Daughter and pop joint making bomb ass food. I was in particularly craving manuedo and ive been complaining that the only good manuedo i can find at restaurants are mediocre at best. The best ones has always been someone's grandmother or mom makes it and that's rare because it's a lot of work and time. They serve manuedo here and, my cravings got the best of me. But im so glad it did because i've discovered this awesome place! The manuedo comes in two sizes, small and large. And whatever sides you order comes with homemade, flattened and fried right in front of you 8inch diameter thicc tortilla. The manuedo here do not play around with it's protein. So the manuedo comes with tripe (we know that) BUT you can also chose to have a beef cartilage bone or some pork. So, first when i say it comes with tripe, this isnt slices and slivers of tripe. I mean, cube sized, perfectly texture where there's a chew because its meat, but not chewy like im chewing on leather. It was cooked to perfection. I chose the beef cartilage and it was heavenly. And the tortillas were sooooo good too! I think i made the lady working there worried because manuedo isnt for everyone and i came in and pretty much demanded for manuedo; and i was not disappointed. Oh, and they served the manuedo with dried oregono, onion, lime and dried chilies on the side. How legit is that!?! I felt like i was invited into someone's abeula's house and got fed soul food. I was so happy i could cry. And despite how full i was, i had to finish it. I kept eating it cause it was so good. The tortillas arent your typical corn tortillas either. The masa they use has texture. It has some grittiness to the bite but yet soft. The tortillas are made Thick, buttery and had a sweet nutty aroma from the masa. If they solely sold their masa or a stack of tortillas, id buy them and roll it with up with some Oaxaca cheese. It was so good. My friend ordered a quesadilla with cabeza and it was also delicious. The cheese was soooo gooey when you bite into it. It stretches and you just have to keep biting it until the cheese snaps. The cabeza was so tenderly cooked but once again, not mushy. All wrapped again with their homemade tortilla. And like we didnt have enough food as is, we had tortilla chips with 3 types of salsa complimentary. This place is a hole in the wall. Minimal seating, mostly for individuals or maybe a party of two. not made for group dining. But boy, eating the food here did make me feel like I was with people. Come try it folks. You wont be disappointed

Yelp
I really really really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it missed the mark. We woke up one rainy Sunday morning and my boyfriend really wanted some menudo. looked up reviews and this spot looked really good. We were even patient when she was prepping the food. She was really nice and welcoming. But the menudo was bland and very disappointing. We ordered a couple of other things but it was just ok. I wish we had the same experience as some of the other reviews.

Yelp
A Culinary Journey to Zacatecas - Pure Authenticity and Flavor So, if you're seeking a truly authentic Zacatecan dining experience, My Zacatecas is the place to be. The combination of delectable, true-to-tradition dishes, a welcoming atmosphere, and friendly service is a winning formula. After dining here, you'll leave with a heart full of appreciation for the rich culinary heritage of Zacatecas, Mexico, and a stomach full of unforgettable flavors. This is, without a doubt, a hidden gem that deserves every bit of praise it receives.

Yelp
The storefront doesn't look like much, but the food is delicious and the service is friendly. My friend took me here, and she assured me anything I order will be good. So, I ordered two tacos, regular nachos, and a beef gorditas. I ordered two tacos, Chicharron and beef, both with cheese and sour cream. OMG, both those soft tacos were buried in cheese and sour cream! Generous, tasty meat fillings and easy to eat. Now, I ordered the beef and cheese Gorditas. That's all you get is beef and cheese. I guess I was expecting something like a Pupusa, where you get shredded veggies and stuff it inside. Now, the regular nachos were put together correctly. There were layers of chips, cheese, onions, sour cream, cilantro, and guac. But as I picked thru it, I saw that not all the cheese was melted. A few zaps in a microwave oven at home fixed this problem. Overall, a good experience for under $20.

Yelp
I don't eat out as much these days but was looking for something quick and easy in the neighborhood at the end of a long week. This spot looked promising so I headed over. It was quiet when I walked in so I said hello and told the woman it was my first time in. When I started looking at the menu, I could see what I was getting into, and I was stoked. Gorditas were the first thing in the menu. Then I saw they had picadillo and potatoes, as well as nopales with pork and had to get one of each. Got a couple more for my wife and kid and a couple of horchatas. No more than 10 minutes and I was headed home. Reader: food was on point. I'll be back to try the barbacoa (only on weekends).

Odiaka G.

Yelp
First time here and what a great surprise. We were given a warm greeting. The food was amazing! Some of the best Nachos I've had in awhile. My kids at the gorditas and love them. Will definitely be coming back.

Veronica G.

Yelp
I am originally from Jerez, Zacatecas and I can tell you this is a authentic as it gets! The food is delicious prepared with love and all the right ingredients! I highly recommend the Gorditas as this are the real Gorditas not that colonizers ads that are NOT real gorditas! Do you want bomb ass Mexican food? You came to the right place!

Thielson D.

Yelp
I'll admit - I came here after the Eater article. Getting here was a bit of a trek for me, and on the way - I had to wonder if it was going to be worth it. Let's face it: Good Mexican/taco places are a dime a dozen (thankfully) in the Bay Area. This place does things differently though. Simple and unassuming this spot has incredible tacos, awesome nachos, but what really stood out was the Gordita. When I think Gordita, I typically think along the lines of crunch wrap supremes that should never be mentioned in the same sentence with food from this place. I was ignorant about what a real Gordita even was until I came to this place. Everything is made fresh and that shows in the flavor and texture of what your eating. I got the picadillo con papas Gordita and it was the best decision I made that day, and a Jamaica (along with two carne assada tacos). A friend got the nachos and the group spoke fondly about the nachos for the rest of the day. Don't expect too many frills here - the food does all the talking, as it should!!

Ardeshir V.

Yelp
Cecilia is the proprietor and chef of this little jewel in the havenscourt neighborhood of east Oakland. The food is fresh and flavorful in large portions. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean. It's obvious those that know of this place appreciate it. She was sweet and the service was fast and I'm definitely coming back here next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
My son and I came around 6:30 on a Wednesday and the place was empty. I ordered 3 super burritos: 2 chicken and one ground beef. On one of the chicken burritos, which was for my sister , I asked for no salsa. We drove back to SF in traffic and we were STARVING by the time we got there. My son had ordered a ground beef burrito, but they were only labeled steak and chicken. He was hopeful that they just labeled it incorrectly, but nope! It was a steak burrito, unfortunately. He and I ate our food and both realized almost instantly that neither of these were the "super" burritos we had ordered. They didn't have sour cream or salsa. I checked in with my sister to see how she was enjoying her burrito and she said the chicken was dry and there was no sour cream on hers either. I was upset! This is NOT what we ordered or sat in traffic for! The next morning I called the restaurant to complain. I told the woman who answered the phone that we did not receive super burritos. I also said my son ordered ground beef, but was given steak. The woman said "we don't have steak", to which I replied "wish someone would've told us that when we ordered it." Next, the woman proceeded to argue with me about the lack of sour cream on the burritos, insisting that she made them herself and knew what she put on them. What she did not dispute, however, was that she did not put salsa on any of the burritos, although I only ordered one without salsa. Arguing with customers and refusing to admit errors are just poor customer service practices. Also, the burritos were DRY and Sour cream is just not something I have to lie about.

Yelp
If your like me and like fresh authentic food check this spot out... I heard about this spot from tic tok.. I have been craving Gorditas for a while and didn't want to drive to Richmond.so this was ment to be.. I made my way over to Mi Zacatecas. Parking on the street wasn't bad, but it was a week day... the have a sign but look for the piñata in the windows... then you kno your in the right place.. it's a warm inviting vibe once your in.. it's very clean and spacious.. some seating inside.. the kitchen area is open so you can see your food being made . I was so excited.. the owner is a very nice sweet woman.. I felt as if I was picking up food from my auntie.. she even offered suggestions on how I could fix my green salsa(y'all kno I be trying to cook everything at home) the masa for the Gorditas is her how recipe and everything is made to order.. me and my sister ordered the bean and cheese,al pastor and chicken Gorditas.. they came with 3 kids a salas red(hot) green and one that tastes like avocados .. i enjoyed all 3 but the red was really spicy for me. My the bean and cheese was my favorite (I'm a bean and cheese girl it's always gonna be my top pic) next would be the chicken then al pastor.. I'll definitely be going back and you should definitely try.. last thing .. I live about 20 mins from the restaurant and I made a stop for like ten mins. When I got home the food was still warm enough to eat .. and I couldn't wait to eat so I took a few bites before taking my photos of the food..

Yelp
Finally, truly healthy Mexican food! Home made recipes. Nixtamal tortillas (protein rich and gluten free). Catering was awesome, came with extra salsa and packed well.

David C.

Yelp
Gorditas are bomb!! Great service and nice ambiance! So delicious, mmmm so good lol the cheese is good too

Jeanette L.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with this place... They have the best Menudo in Oakland! I tried the Gordita de chicharrón and picadillo and they were amazing- filled with meat the right amount of crispy and chewy. The Menudo is so flavorful taste so clean and it has the right amount of space. I will be coming back here next week. I'm excited to try everything on the menu and look forward to doing that soon. If you're interested in trying food from a Zacatecas this is the place for you!!

Ben S.

Yelp
Mi Zacatecas is the best Mexican food place I've found in the Oakland area, and I've been trying everything I can for the past year. I am used to San Diego Mexican food, and NorCal has been a consistent disappointment--but not this place! The super burrito was an appropriate size, I got it with extra meat, and it was genuinely filled with delicious carne asada. My friend had the menudo, and she agreed that it was phenomenal. The red salsa also was a little different from any other I've tried and it had great spice with a robust flavor. The menu may look streamlined, but each item is great. I plan to be a regular at Mi Zacatecas from now on.

Christy W.

Yelp
This is a special spot for Mexican food--indeed it's Zacatecan food, almost impossible to find in the Bay Area. The proprietor Cecilia makes the masa by hand from corn kernal to finished product, and the results are spectacular. The tortilla envelope for the very special gorditas is tender and flavorful--a rare delight. Same for the very generously mounded steak taco. The ingredients are top-notch. The jamaica drink was also made from scratch, clearly not a mix because it was delicately sweet, not tooth-achingly sweet as the mixes for aguas frescas so often are. Cecilia and her team and doing Mexican food right from start to finish, with love and care. Visit them!

Mario R.

Yelp
Found this little whole in the wall place driving by. I looked it up on yelp and it has great reviews and pictures that I wanna say are almost false advertisement. I was really expecting something different than I got. I ordered the menudo and chicharon gorditas. Let's start with the menudo. It had Not one piece of the honey comb tripe as advertised in the picture where a bowl full of it is shown. The broth and pieces of meat were a bright orange and salty. It tasted as if they made more broth out of tomato bullion. I was really looking forward to a good bowl of menudo I'd seen this establishment had posted, and got something completely different well doesn't hurt to try other than my pocket. Over all there are way too many other places to get better menudo than this place but I figured I'd give it a try being its close to where I live. Chicharon gorditas that were also ordered w/ cheese did not have cheese inside and way over priced! My overall experience for this place is I will not be going back unfortunately because I really wanted it to be good.

Rhonda R.

Yelp
They catered our marriage celebration, and the guests couldn't stop talking about how good the food was! People went back for seconds, thirds, fourths... delicious. Everything was ready right on time and hot hot hot! Staff was very friendly and helped me load up my car, making sure everything got to our location in one piece. Very pleased with the experience, will happily be ordering from here again!

Nat B.

Yelp
Amazing food! Super delicious. Definitely a cut above most other taquerias in the area.

Valeria G.

Yelp
When I saw the abuelita in the kitchen whipping up tortillas and making the salsa I knew I was going to love the food! The food is phenomenal and the staff is friendly. We had the menudo, gordita de chicharrón and taco de asada. Definitely have to check this place out!

Adam B.

Yelp
Today we had the weekend barbacoa and two types of gorditas. A couple weeks ago we also had super nachos with pastor. Man! So flavorful with yummy tender fresh tortillas. Generous portions and everything tastes so very fresh. The pastor is the most tender I've ever had in the bay area. You can add rice and beans to any dish and the beans have a nice, lightly smoked flavor. When you walk in, the vibe is so welcoming and approaching. Wonderful spot! We'll definitely be back.

Jack D.

Yelp
In the neighborhood, any restaurant named Mi Zacatecas is off to a good start and sure enough it was comida zacatecana. Very friendly people, clean and nice atmosphere for a neighborhood place. Cecilia suggested I try the tacos al vapor, so in Zacatecas where she is from, they do the steamed tacos and with her tortillas made on the spot, they are delicious, the tortilla itself is a treat. The al pastor I asked for was good and the gordita with carne de puerco y nopalitos, pork with cactus, was delicious, one of those things when you taste it you know it's something special. So for handmade tortillas and the real taste of Zacatecas, Mexico, I recommend strongly Mi Zacatecas.

Chris R.

Yelp
The BEST Mexican restaurant here around Mills College! Thank goodness we found this place! We love to have good Mexican food and the food trucks are ok, but THIS restaurant is just really good! Yummy burrito, yummy chips and amazing salsa! Stop to search, go check it out!

Thelma P.

Yelp
The restaurant was exceptional. I am originally from Zacatecas so when I saw the restaurant I wanted to try it out. I had gorditas with pork and cactus and a cheese gordita. They were both delicious. I strongly recommend the food is authentic Mexican. Specifically to Zacatecas. If you are vegan or vegetarian go and try it out. Next time I go I will take a picture.

Doug E.

Yelp
Some of the best Mexican food north of the border. The flavors are so fresh and flavorful unlike some of the other taquerias around. We had the Gordita with cabeza. If your haven't had this cut of meat it's moist, juicy, and succulent. The meat melts in your mouth and the masa enrobing the meat was just perfectly cooked. The outside was charred just right and creamy too. We tried nachos too with chicken that was tender and marinated with achiote and pulled then scattered over the crisp chips. The tacos were topped with Barbacoa and was simply divine. Lastly the horchata was made fresh and you can really taste the difference from the pre mixed stuff. If you want the real deal, this is the spot.

Dmitriy K.

Yelp
What a gem! The food and the service were excellent. The owners were very attentive and friendly. Highly recommended.

Jesus A.

Yelp
Mi Zacatecas has some of the best Mexican food quality I've tried in a while the meat is cooked just right, nice and juicy, full of flavor. They make some of the best gorditas around , when eaten with the menudo 10 stars!! I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for some good quality Mexican food!

Flor M.

Yelp
I do not recommend if you are vegan or vegetarian.Tacos are $3.99 a piece regardless of if they are veggie or not. Veggie tacos only include beans, rice, cilantro, cheese and salsa and are super small. We were still hungry after we finished them off and neither one of us usually eats a lot in one sitting. I don't recommend coming here for the tacos as they are overpriced. You can get a plate full of three tacos, beans, rice and salsa and chips at Mar y Tierra restuarant in Hayward on A street for $9.99 and the rice and beans are just as tasty, if not more. Wanted to love this restaurant in my neighborhood but it's too expensive. :(

Marie J.

Yelp
Best food we had in our San Francisco trip! Well worth the wait, my children loved it. It's authentic homemade delicious Mexican food, we plan on returning here next time we visit.

Leslie L.

Yelp
Came here for lunch -- burritos were made fresh, chips with three types of salsa provided while we waited for food. Food was great, service was friendly too. Will come back next time in area.

Arthur V.

Yelp
Ordered 6 tacos between my brother & I. Salsas are very flavorful & we both preferred the asada over al pastor. Tasty hole in the wall.

Daisy L.

Yelp
Gorditas are bomb! I'm from Zacatecas and this is the only place I've been to that has Authentic gorditas.

Sheila S.

Yelp
The super burrito was good. They didn't pay attention to detail. I assume because I placed the order online. I asked for no rice and of course I got rice. Nachos were cold so wasn't that great. You'll probably have a better experience if you go into the restaurant.

Erika H.

Yelp
great food! it definitely reminded me of home. the owner was really thoughtful and talked to us about her inspiration for the restaurant. she even talked to us about the history of some of her decor. definitely will be going back!

Vinicio L.

Yelp
Excellent food, great service, and the owner is very nice. I have lived in Oakland for 9 years and their handmade corn tortillas are the best in the Bay. I have lived in Los Angeles and San Diego, and I'd put Mi Zacatecas corn tortillas up their with any of the Mexican restaurants there too...I don't eat meat anymore but when I did, the meat barbacoa consume' is not to be missed on a Saturday or Sunday (the only days they have it). Buen provecho!

Ed S.

Yelp
Came in for menudo and I wasn't disappointed! Delicious and very friendly staff. Highly recommended

Samantha D.

Yelp
Came here for the first time this Sunday because my friend was craving menudo. I got the barbacoa since it was a Sunday special. It was soooo juicy and delicious. It came with handmade tortillas on the side. Writing this review makes me want to open my fridge and eat the small leftovers I have!! I also tried a chicharron Gordita, and my partner ordered nachos and a quesadilla al pastor. The flavors were great across the menu. The little seating area is cute with onions, cilantro, lime and peppers to customize your dish the way you want it. The tables are big enough for 6 people each. The service was super friendly as well!! This is the type of gem I absolutely love finding. Comfort food made with serious love in a random spot you probably wouldn't have found if it wasn't for yelp. I am definitely coming again!

Jake B.

Yelp
Really good overall! The burrito was excellent, and the tacos sere really solid too. The chicken was a bit dry unfortunately, but overall satisfied! Very good value

Meme E.

Yelp
We met Cecelia, chef of Mi Zacatecas, and she is a gem. She makes homemade, authentic, Mexican food and serves it to you personally. The gorditas are made with fresh masa and with meats marinated overnight. I tried the nachos without the chips with carne asada and it came with sour cream, avocado, cheese. Yummers! Our group tried the the chicken nachos, tacos & gorditas. Everyone's favorite were the Gorditas! Highly recommended.

Bryan A.

Yelp
Great food...friendly people running things...this is my new go to spot! We had menudo, super burritos and super nachos so far. Looking forward to trying more things on the menu.

Arturo R.

Yelp

Gloria P.

Yelp
This is a unique variety of Mexican food the is a welcome change from others. Delicious!

Victor G.

Yelp
Mi Zacatecas is located on corner of 99th ave. & MacArthur Blvd. their specialty is Zacatecas home style mexican cuisine offerings: gorditas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, bacbaca y menudos(weekends), beverages. eats: lengua taco(2.50) -tender pieces of beef tongue. veggies -green chili sauce in plastic bottles to taste beef with cheese quesadilla(10) -cut into 3 triangles, dripping cheese with beef nuggets. -all ingredients tasted fresh, made to order. take outs: -small patio with tarp covering adjacent to order window. a few varnished wood tables with accompanying tiki chairs. -quality food with upscale pricing... -quick, friend service -possible parking issues with street paving underway.

Sharee g.

Yelp
Woke up a slightly with a hangover, called my friend...she was feeling the same way. It was either menudo or pho...we decided to try this place. It's new and close to our house. First..it's not really a restaurant. They've converted the patio to a small dining area with 6 picnic tables covered with tarps. Most of their business is take out. Not recomended for large groups. I had menudo and horchata. Menudo was great....horchata not so much. Oh, I had a lengua taco, that was good too!

Vila B.

Yelp
Yay, we made it to Mi Zacatecas new location! We've been fans and the new spot is so cute (even just looking in from the front door). Every dish is still tasty and the menu is more simplified. If you like horchata, it's good here, not overly sweet and sugary like so many others. The meats is always tasty. Also, great service! We had a really friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Kaila L.

Yelp
This place is the cutest!! It gives such a feeling of being in a small town in Mexico. The customer service was great and the food was amazing! I ordered the chicken gorditas, my boyfriend got the lengua and chicharron gorditas and my son got just a bean and cheese Gordita. I almost forgot to add that their hot sauce is my favorite!!All of them tasted soooo fresh and authentic. We will be returning to Mi Zacatecas whenever we are in Oakland area again to try other things on their menu, I wish there was one closer by my city. Definitely give it a try!

Mario B.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. The service is awesome. Highly recommend the cafe de olla and menudo. The gorditas de frijoles y queso are great. You really can't go wrong with anything you order
