On the Grid : Coppelia Ice Cream

"Copellia is a Vedado institution. Established by the communist government as a place for locals to get absurdly cheap ice cream, it became a spot for socializing and family outings. People wait in line for hours, but they say they that's part of the experience. As a foreigner, lines are shorter, but prices higher." - Noah Friedman-Rudovsky

The 11 Best Ice Cream Shops In Miami - Miami - The Infatuation

"The decor at this Flagami spot will definitely remind what kind of ice cream you’re about to have—everything is the colors of the Cuban flag. This delightfully old-school spot has flavors like mamey, guanábana, guava, and more. If you’re here to do some damage, go for the ensalada, which is a sort of giant ice cream “salad” (basically five scoops in a bowl). Or get the copa lolita: two scoops of ice cream over flan. Almost any ice cream you order here is finished with a dusting of Maria cookie crumbs and whipped cream." - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo, mariana trabanino

The Best Things We Ate This Week

"Turrón de Jijona Ice Cream This little Cuban ice cream parlor by the airport takes its name from the famous Coppelia ice cream palace in Havana. Needless to say, you’ll find a lot of very Cuban flavors here, along with unique takes on sundaes, and even a special lingo for scoops. Our favorite thing to get is the ice cream flavored with turrón de jijona, a traditional soft almond nougat from Spain that’s really popular around Christmas. It has a toasty flavor that reminds us of a cross between almond butter and marzipan. You can order a soldado (one scoop), jimaguas (two scoops), or tres gracias (three scoops). Make sure to get all the toppings, including a generous dusting of Maria cookie crumbs." - ryan pfeffer, carlos c olaechea

Miami Coppelia Ice Cream - Review - Flagami - Miami - The Infatuation

"Miami Coppelia is inspired by the famous ice cream palace in Havana that goes by the same name (minus the Miami part, of course). Cuban ice cream parlors have their own scoop lingo, unique flavors, and special preparations, and this Flagami spot continues those traditions. The space is nowhere near as grand as the original in Cuba, but the decor will definitely remind you of what kind of ice cream you’re about to have—everything is either red, white, or blue, which are the colors of the Cuban flag. Here, you can expect to find flavors like mamey, guanábana (soursop), guava, moscatel (rum raisin), malta, pineapple and mandarin, and much more. A single scoop here is referred to as a soldado (soldier), two scoops are jimaguas (twins), and three scoops are tres gracias (three graces). If you’re really feeling gluttonous, go for the ensalada, which is basically a giant ice cream “salad” (basically 5 scoops in a bowl). Or you can mix things up by getting a special sundae, like the copa lolita: two scoops of ice cream over flan. Almost any ice cream you order here is finished with a dusting of Maria cookie crumbs, whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and a lady finger, but you can also ask for chocolate syrup and sprinkles." - Carlos C Olaechea

Google
Delicious ice cream and friendly service! Definitely stop by if you’re in the area.

Google
A charming spot to enjoy some delicious ice cream! While it may not be the most premium, the flavors are delightful, and it has a nostalgic feel that takes you back to an old-time ice cream parlor. Every time I’m in the area, it’s a must-visit for me. The prices are fantastic too, making it all the more worth the trip!

Google
When I lived in the area many years ago we used to stop here after the movies on LeJeune. Today, after many years, we decided to stop by to treat family who recently came over from Cuba. Unfortunately, this is not the same establishment of many years ago. The employees were serious, not showing any sign of wanting to actually wanting to take our order but not providing any smiles. Unfortunately, the worst part was the unbearable hot temperature but the response from the employees when we asked them to lower the temperature: “The ice cream will cool you down” and they were not kidding! Good ice cream, awful customer service. NEVER coming back!

While visiting Miami I was craving ice cream. This was the closest shop to me. My wife and I love this little gem after visiting. The owner/manager I believe, didn't speak very much English but with my limited Spanish and the Google translate app we did fine. Lots of fruity flavors for me and regular kinds for the wife. She played it safe with a peanut butter flavor. The lady that served us had a youth and vigor about herself that was infectious and she truly seems to love her job! She was very helpful getting our selections and samples to see what we liked. I had the Ensalada! 5 scoops! I would definitely come back again if ever in the area. Clean little place and good quality product!

Google
I always come here because it makes me feel like I’m in Havana, precisely at Coppelia. Copa Lolita is always my ride and die. They have such a variety of flavors and different toppings to add it. Although the place is very small, and sometimes can be crowded, it’s a must visit for anyone who wants a delicious ice cream at Cuban Style.

Yelp
Busy but worth the wait to try unique ice cream flavors such as guava. Lots of seating areas in and outside.

Yelp
Every time I come here to eat ice cream, they always get the order right and it always tastes good. This time I got the brownie order with chocolate and dulce de leche flavored ice cream. The service is great, but it is almost all of the time full of people. The ambiance is great

Yelp
Miami Coppelia is amazing. The flavors are very diverse and tasty. There are lots to choose from and lots of things to get with your ice cream. The employees are nice and are quick. It is very affordable and quality. I've come here many times and it has always been remarkable! The ambiance is nice. It reminds me of Coppelia back in Havana. This is a place to have on your bucket list.

Yelp
Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to find actual mantecado ice cream is like? well, here you can find it. not vanilla, actual mantecado. Other than that, this place has lots of flavors and many kinds of combinations with pie or cookies or bananas or flan, or... I don't know. You get the idea. I'll just say: go, order, try, repeat, I liked it a lot. I had taken pictures, but for some reason they are not in my cell phone now, so, just trust me. The service is nice, very family-style. The store is not that big, and not at all fancy, but it is actually the perfect atmosphere they're trying to create. Coppelia is a famous ice cream place in Cuba and the Miami Coppelia sort of recreates the Cuban Ice Cream experience. Just one thing: The parking of the "strip mall" is very uncomfortable, with the tight spaces and all, but at least there's one.

Yelp
GREAT ice cream at all times and diverse choices of flavors and toppin and great environment will always recommend this business

Yelp
Make sure to call before driving over here to get ice cream. We drove from South Kendall only for it to be closed upon arrival. The hours state they open at 1:30 pm. We arrived at 1:45 pm and lights were off and door locked. No sign of life. Shocked to see that this is a common occurrence here, since I see on other reviews on Google stating similar issues with the hours. Either update your hours or open and close when you say you will. Very disappointed that this happened since we were excited about having their ice cream. The name reminds my Mom of Cuba. She was really looking forward to it. There are so many other great places with fabulous ice cream around here. I'd rather go support them than a place that doesn't respect their posted hours.

Yelp
This is a cute little ice cream shop that gets quite a bit of business. Came in and it was pretty empty and within a matter of minutes it filled up. I got the Copa Lolita which comes with two scoops of ice cream and a flan. My ice cream flavors were dulce de leche and chocolate fudge brownie. The employees were quick to serve and very nice as well. You have the choice of the typical ice cream toppings: whipped cream, cherries, sprinkles, etc. They have a variety of different flavors which makes it hard to decide what you want but they all looked extremely delicious.

Yelp
Nice place for ice cream. The service was great. Very friendly and attentive. Plenty of space to sit and enjoy Cuban fruit flavors. Affordable pricing. The ice cream tasted good.

Yelp
Forget all the fancy trending ice cream shops Miami Copelia beats them all and it's simple, delicious and a great find. I just yelped ice cream in my neighborhood and this was the mood I was in. Something local with a no hastle drive very far from home. So thankful I found this spot because I'll definitely go again. I ordered a scoop of vanilla for my kid and when they told me $1.50 and check out I had to order something else because of my surprise. I ordered a scoop of dulce de leche and both were incredible. However they have a huge menu to choose from done up many ways. Shakes, Banana splits, you can choose toppings, served with cake, served with flan. So many to try. Scary for the diet, but looking forward to indulging when it's ice cream break for the baby. I actually want to put this place in the same category of must see and experience places to go in miami along side Versalles for tourists or locals looking for that old school feel that's hard to find nowadays. Parking is limited because it's located in a tiny shopping strip and don't expect a fancy place... it's just a parlor with old school swivel chair seating and simple ice cream serving cups & aluminum plates. So cool. Seating is limited. There is inside and outside seating. It seemed that ppl love this place as I experienced a large crowd come in right after I made my short line. Luckily I got there right on time before the rush. It must have been around 7 pm on a Sunday They are open til 11 pm everyday making it so convenient for a late night craving It's located in the middle of nowhere else to really go to. It's a destination place just to satisfy your ice cream craving. Nothing trendy just in a busy street in a miami neighborhood.

Yelp
One of the most delicious Sundae's I've ever had. The whip cream is more like marshmallow sauce and it's perfection.
google avatar

Nancy A.

Yelp
Are you cuban? Do you miss your home? Then come here! My mom was so excited about the mamey ice cream and I tried the flan. both things were inexpensive and delish. They have ample parking up front, and some old school seating arrangements. They are open late too.

Yelp
So much about this place I loved from the moment I walked in. It was a busy little shop that's a but difficult to maneuver around because of the way the chairs are laid out... but that's not a big deal. This place was busy. Every seat taken and people smiling and talking while eating Ice cream. Once to the counter, I noticed that the whole menu was in spanish. I was surprised but really happy. The women working was so nice, we sampled a few ice creams and she gave us some suggestions. The ice cream was good price. It was delicious. I loved the malta flavor ( yes, Malta) the mint chip was so creamy and delicious. The brownie was a pretty big piece and warm.. yummmm The atmosphere was great, so many people talking and having a good time. I will definitely be back to support this little spot!

Yudenia L.

Yelp
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
The place is very clean and friendly. I ordered their popular Copa Lolita: flan with 2 scoops of ice cream. The flan was absolutely delicious. But, both scoops of ice cream had no distinct flavors. I had the maracuya (passion fruit) and the malta (malt) flavors. I couldn't taste any difference between the 2 flavors. One scoop was pink in color and the other scoop was beige . That was the only difference that I could notice. There really wasn't any flavor whatsoever in their cream. Sad! I may come back here again for the flan. But, their ice cream is a complete bore! ....& this is an ice cream shop, right? I could've done just as well by picking up a cheap pint of ice cream at a grocery store.

Danial P.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. Got a dulce de Leche and chocolate banana split and it was some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Highly recommend this place.

Alexis R.

Yelp
Todo es muy exelente everything it's excellent very highly recommended the valentini ice cream it's very good flavors the service it's great family owned and operated overall very nice place to spend time with the family.

Heddi S.

Yelp
My 4 year old daughter loves going out and sharing a banana split as a family. It's a special time we share together and the Coppelia is close by our house so convenient for us. Last night we went, she had been asking to go for days and was super excited. She and my husband went up to the counter to order, and she tried to converse with the ladies serving the ice cream, but was completely ignored which hurt her feelings. We ate our banana split, which was subpar, consoled her and explained that maybe they were having a bad day and left. It was such a shame and it makes me feel terrible when grumpy people ruin things for her. You work in an ice cream shop, you could at least fake it. Next time we'll take the extra trip down to Walls on US 1. They have never disappointed-always a great experience all around.
google avatar

Gaby F.

Yelp
We were 4, all cubans and the name of this place made us try it. The ice creams were good but nothing different from what you can buy at a grocery store. The staff is very friendly; they treat you like they have known you for years, very sweet. There arent that variety of flavors, mostly the classics. The place is small and clean. Good for an afternoon craving, if you live in the area at least.
google avatar

Sheyla G.

Yelp
It's a great spot to get rid of your ice cream cravings. Plenty to choose from, nothing to do with the Cuban Copelia in Havana where you can only pick one flavor one time purchase per person up to two scoops and not all the flavors are offered on the first floor. The store itself is tight and has all of the tables on top of each other which can be annoying but at the same time you get to laugh with the unmet ice cream neighbors who always have something funny to say. If you come here at night any day of the week is packed. Come over to experience the true flavors of real Cuban ice real.
google avatar

Monica B.

Yelp
Best Cuban ice cream please .. since 1997 it's my favorite place .. the girls working are super friendly and attentive
google avatar

Jim E.

Yelp
Hot Memorial Day weekend and we wanted some ice cream to cool off. Found Miami Coppelia in Little Havana part of Miami, which was near the airport and our hotel. Lots of flavors to pick from and reasonable prices. Ice cream was very rich and filling. Limited parking in the strip mall adjacent.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
There's nothing unique or interesting about the ice cream here. The same mediocre store-bought ice cream that you could get in any American supermarket. If there was something that made this Cuban ice cream, it wasn't obvious to me.
google avatar

Ela G.

Yelp
The ice cream here is delicious, and so cheap! I'm giving it four stars only because the parking situation isn't ideal, but then again, this is Miami...
google avatar

Emma F.

Yelp
The ice cream is amazing . The flan is perfection paired with the ice cream . The price is unbeatable for how great everything taste . Totally recommend this ice cream parlor . We went after work . And the Parking is very restricted since is in a small shopping center but since it was after work ours we all found parking .
google avatar

Alicia G.

Yelp
This is a little shop in Miami that has the same name As a very famous ice cream shop in Havana, Cuba . I have heard of it a lot but never walked in. My daughter finally convinced me and we walked in. It looks like a typical cafeteria, the lady that takes care of you is very fast and nice. The ice cream is delicious and the combination of the dishes are to die.if you are in the area please stop by this place is definitely a must try.
google avatar

Liliana R.

Yelp
Mmm sooo good! Long lines but it was worth it for the copa Lolita . I got it with Mantecado and Dulce de leche. BEST DUO EVER! I recommend this place to anyone at any time!

Elier D.

Yelp
Great ice cream place the customer service was amazing when we pulled up the ice cream shop was closed but the owner opened her doors early and let us get ice cream great experience And really similar to the ice cream in cuba
google avatar

Janet G.

Yelp
We decided to try this after a Miami local recommended it to us. We arrived and there was a long line so we were like it must me good... well let me tell you it's was worth waiting on line. The ice cream is so creamy and natural tasting.

Madelinn P.

Yelp
BEST ICE CREAM EVER. I grew up eating here since I was little and it's been my best memory. I now live in Orlando FL and I drive down every couple of weeks to see family and it's a tradition to have their ice cream. The rum raisin is to die for. 10/10
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
Had dessert here last week and it was very good! I ordered the Copa Lolita which is two scoops of ice cream, flan and some vanilla cracker. The ice cream was good but a little icy. I had the cookie and cream and the chocolate brownie. Extreme sugar overload! Downside is they only accept cash unless your buying for the whole family. My ice cream was about $4 so it's very affordable!

Erik P.

Yelp
Cute little spot in a little plaza. Not the fanciest or newest but definitely cozy and familiar. There is a wide variety of ice cream to choose from. I got the Copa Lolita which is a flan and two scoops or any kind of ice cream for about $5. Then toppings varying from sprinkles to peanuts and more. All very affordable and delicious.
google avatar

Abisai H.

Yelp
Cuban flavors and even the same name for the different ice cream selections! This place takes you back to your Cuban roots the moment you step in. Offering wall decor similar the the coppelia in Cuba, you immediately are taken back to the motherland. There's great flavors to chose from such as Mantecado, naranja piña, dulce de leche, Malta and many more. It is a loud place and can get very packed with long lines but it does move pretty fast. The service is good and the workers show efficiency.
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Miami Coppelia is a nice surprise. I was driving home one night and saw a massive line outside their door. I became curious and stop by this little ice cream shop the next day. It's a cute, yet simple ice cream parlor. Nothing too fancy here but the ice cream is delicious and the staff super friendly. Just keep in mind if you want to use your debit card the minimum to purchase is $10, which for this place can get you a whole lot. Enjoy!
google avatar

Carlos R.

Yelp
Five star on everything. I've been coming to this location since I was a little kid. They're ice cream tastes better than any ice cream I have ever had. The ladies that help you are all awesome they're always polite and in a good mood they make you want to come back. The lines are usually always long but that just means they they're doing something right. You definitely have to try the copa Lolita which comes with a flan and 2 scoops of ice cream of your choice. They're prices are also very good.

Yelp
Place is a hole in the wall but Icecream are really good if you are looking for cuban flavors

Yelp
My mom had been telling me about this ice cream shop called Coppelia for months before my husband & I went to Miami for vacation this summer. She told me about how Coppelia originated in her native Cuba (post Castro per my father), and how people at her job raved about it. So one night after dinner we decided to make the trek to the NW section of Miami...where the only Coppelia outside Havana can be found. Upon arriving, we found parking quickly, as all the surrounding business were closed. When we walked in I felt as if I had stepped into a modern day Cuban eatery featured in several travel shows as of late. The walls were decorated simply with photos of Cuba. The seats were of the old school variety, painted orange, and green and a TV blared the news in Spanish. Two old ice cream freezers sat right up front, and all the tubs of ice cream were stacked haphazardly on top of each other. The two attendants seemed tired, but were both friendly. Another thing that should be mentioned, it was a Monday night, after 9pm, and there was a line.... As we waited our turn, I was amazed at all the different flavors being offered, Mamey, Guava, Coco Almendrado (coconut w/ almonds), Pistachio, Chocolate, there must have been over 20 flavors to choose from, reflective of Cuban and American tastes. Coppelia offers several types of desserts; from sundaes to banana splits, and milkshakes. They even have a mini-flan sandwiched between two scoops of ice cream! Each dessert comes with whip cream, chocolate sauce, a cherry, and a sugar cookie wafer. Or you can do what I did, and have it plain. There isn't a thing on the menu that costs more than $5. Speaking of the cost, there were four of us, and we each got multiple scoops of ice cream, and yet the total cost was under $20, $15.86 to be exact. After much consideration, I decided to go with the Coco Alemendrado & Chocolate. Now let me tell you, I like ice cream, sometimes I can even say I crave it...but this, this ice cream was like heaven in a cute vintage serving dish, and long silver spoon. The chocolate, was not your basic chocolate, but more like a dark chocolate, where the flavors of pure cocoa danced on your tongue. The coconut-almond was rich and creamy, with just the right hint almond. When I paired the two flavors together, I found that the union was better than anything Almond Joy could ever hope for. We liked it so much, that we went back with friends two days later. I had the same combo, but added Caramelo to the mix. Caramelo, was another hit, it tasted exactly like the syrup used for flan, not exactly caramel, and not exactly burnt sugar. It was fantastic. The whole experience was decadent and dreamy, and yet I didn't feel sick afterwards. The portions, are perfect, not so big that you suffer from a sugar coma afterwards, and not too small that you end up buying a pint of Ben & Jerry's at Publix on your way home. In short, it satifies. So the next time you find yourself in the NW, or if you're simply in the mood for some excellent ice cream go support a local business and give Coppelia a try. It will make an ice cream purist out of you.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and boy am I glad this place exist. Aside from how good the ice cream taste, the price is amazing! The staff is friendly and the place is clean. I highly recommend to everyone!
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a wonderful place, and without the line at their store in Cuba. At the original Coppelia's in La Habana, locals stand in line for hours to get a treat. There's a separate line for tourists or rich locals... but that's another story for another day. Everything I've tried is delicious here, but my favorite is the Tres Gracias. This location isn't as busy as the one in Hialeah, so try this one if it's closer to you!
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
This was only my second time giving Cuban ice cream a try and i'm sold! I first heard of coppelia through a commercial on univision when I was at my grandmothers house and my interests were sparked! According to my grandma this is the same brand of ice cream that you can find in Havana (Even today!). Coppelia isn't as healthy as frozen yogurt but i'm more than willing to sacrifice the calories for this amazing ice cream. This is because: You get the creamy taste of gelato, you get those lady finger cookies in each ice cream, you get some cookie crumbles with every scoop, also some caramel, and some really creamy whipped cream. It's just too tasty to pass it up! My personal favorite flavors include: Dulce de Leche, Caramel, Turron, and Cafe. The only reason I haven't tried every single flavor that they have to offer is because i'm too shy to go up to the employees and ask for a sample of every flavor that they offer. haha! The thing that makes all of this even better! ... it's just so cheap to have some some ice cream here when you compare it to other main stream places. Other things that I like about this place: -You have your ice cream served in classic glass and metal ice cream bowls. -If you order a coke - You have the option of getting it from the glass bottles! -There is a water jug with little cups for everyone to wash down the ice cream with. I can't wait to have some coppelia ice cream again!

Yelp
I must say...flan with ice cream?? Never had it but I was very impressed. Yummy!! The ice cream was very good, creamy. Flan was too! Very inexpensive too! They also have sundaes, brownie sundaes and banana splits.
google avatar

Sheila G.

Yelp
I love this place, they have the same names as the original coppelia in Cuba and it's sooooo good!!! They are usually busy, but the service is always quick and the ice cream is so good. I would take this place any day over Ben & Jerry's or any other. The prices are reasonable and they have tables for you to seat and enjoy or you can take it to go.
google avatar

Sarai G.

Yelp
Every time I come to back to Miami Copelia it brings back memories of my childhood in Cuba. Back in the 90's you were lucky enough if you even got to eat icecream at Copelia because most of the time there was either no electricity or only 1 or 2 flavors of icecream to choose from, but the menu would look exactly like this one at Miami Copelia. So with that said If you ever hace a sugar craving and are in the mood for icecream try Miami Copelia they have wide variety of delicious yet inexpensive icecream flavors.
google avatar

Allison D.

Yelp
let me begin with the ice cream... It was really really good, traditional old fashion ice cream, the one we use to have back in Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico or Cuba, traditional flavors that makes us think about the past and the ice cream we use to eat while growing up...for those who where raised in the islands! The way its served and decorated is the same as having ice cream in the 80's or 70's, same style, decoration and garnishes. When I went there it was only one lady serving and handling everything, really nice and efficient, everything was clean and in place, its a really small ice cream parlor with a few tables to sit located in a little corner of a shopping center. I had 3 flavors of ice cream, Malta, Mantecado and Turron Jijona topped with cremita and crumbled cookies, all super good. Now the only reason why I am rating this place with 3 stars is because LOL the place is sooo ghetto, the decoration is really bad and you have to wait in line for a while to be helped even though the line runs fast, it also gets really crowded, but you will find a place to sit after.
google avatar

Eloise N.

Yelp
The flavors are good, the prices are cheap, and the atmosphere is family oriented. Not much variety in flavors or products but the ladies behind the counter are very friendly. Nice little joint for a craving.

Yelp
Coppelia has become my go-to place for ice cream. They have such a huge variety of tropical flavors, it's always so hard for me to decide which to pick! So far, Guava and Coconut have been my favorites. Another thing I love about this place is how good their prices are! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Love this place, it's small but their ice cream are delicious. They have about 30 flavors and my favorites are guava, mantecado and almond with coconut oh and I love the pineapple cake as well. I went today with hubby and daughter and we had the copa lolita (ice cream with flan) and a cake a la moda (ice cream with pineapple cake) yummyyyy
