Went in with my grandson to get a couple pizzas to go after seeing a great review on the Beaverdale group on Facebook. We were not disappointed, both of our pizzas were delicious!! He especially loved the complimentary slice he got to eat while we waited!

Google
Pizza is amazing and staff here treats you like family! We did the take, design our own at home, and bake at home option! Highly recommend eating here or ordering it to go!! So good!!

This is definitely our new go-to pizza place! Great service, awesome food, and always a great place to sit and eat. We love it!

Poor Michaels pizza was an iconic pizza place attached to Michael’s restaurant. Located at 4044 Urbandale Ave. They did carry out only and they always have a fresh slice for the driver to eat on their way home. Their pizza was absolutely perfect every time. The owners decided to retire, and actually sold their recipe to a new restaurant opening up around the corner as “Michaels”. We have tried the pizza 3 times over the years. The first time we figured they hadn’t gotten it down right. Several months later the same result. So it’s been years. We decided to try it last Saturday night. The four of us arrived around 6pm. The place was empty and the employees were in the back so we weren’t sure it was open. One pick up order came in the entire time we were there. They still do the driver slice. The service was fine, but the pizza was not. It managed to be both burnt and uncooked at the same time. The sausage looked gray and the cheese was sparse. It looked nothing like the photos I saw posted here. The parmesan cheese on the table had mold in it. We brought this to the attention of our server who was a nice young kid and brought us a fresh shaker, but the “manager” never appeared. When the server brought the bill, and asked about the food, my husband had to comment that it was probably the worst pizza he had ever had. Our friends silently gave their opinion by not eating more than one slice. I don’t know what happened to Poor Michaels recipe. but I wish they would resurrect it. Beaverdale is a great area and they need some really good pizza.

Google
Based on takeout order(s). Have ordered Michael’s twice and both times have been left wanting more. Their large size is more like a medium and the ingredient quality just seems lacking. The sausage tonight tasted off, as well as the coloring. With a lot of options nearby, I won’t be running back to Michael’s.

Great local pizza , highly recommend. Love the pineapple pizza best

Google
We started going to Michael’s during the pandemic, and made it a weekly pick up. I love their sweet and salty pizza but I tried the pizza blanco today and it was incredible. It had really high quality ingredients. Their ranch is the best ranch I’ve ever had, and the onion rings are thin and crispy and addicting. It’s also really nice to be able to get specialty pizzas in the personal size. Our whole family has very different pizza taste, and that makes everyone happy.

Looking for a place to get your pizza? This is the place to go! The location is awesome with some captivating original art hanging on the walls. The service is always the best anytime I go during my lunch breaks! Highly recommend this spot for any of your pizza cravings.

Yelp
Stopped by Michael's tonight for takeout. Pie was ready when expected; I ordered a medium supreme, which was delicious. The size could feed 2-3, but probably want a large or second pizza for more. Lots of fun offerings on the menu; I worked through the specialty pies during the pandemic and there wasn't a bad or uninteresting selection in the bunch. I've tossed in apps/salads in the past too, all are good. They have specials they list on a chalkboard, not listed on any of the menus I saw but may be out on social media; otherwise, I'd ask. Could be a little awkward if you were dining in, though they do have a handful of beverages in the cooler; would be fun to bring a group, order pies, and slam some brews. Michael's is a Beaverdale staple the continues to deliver.

Yelp
Needed a quick meal idea tonight and Michael's for the win! 30 minutes for 2 large pizzas. I arrived at the quoted time and had to wait an extra 5 minutes and was slightly bummed, not that I had to wait but that i didn't get the driver slice I got last time and that Michael's used to be known for. Oh well. The pies we ate completely made up for it (even though we also learned they no longer make the reuben pizza).

Yelp
The place is small with just 5 or 6 tables... most of the business comes from pick up orders. It is very cold in the restaurant when the door opens. The staff are very attentive and helpful! The pizza I had was Supa Chzzz. The crust was thin and tasty. The pizza as a whole was pretty tasteless. I added peppers and oregano but really could not get much flavor. I probably would go back in the summer vs winter. I would try something that had some spice to it as well. I am not writing it off but I was underwhelmed. I will be back for a second opinion.

Yelp
I'm from Chicago and was visiting a friend in Iowa. One night we had Michaels Pizza an and it was delicious!

Yelp
Finding good pizza is soooo hard. I live north of Des Moines where there just isn't any good pizza, so I decided to see what was available in Des Moines. This was supposed to be one of the best in town and I think it's pretty great.

Yelp
This is really good pizza, even on take away. We've ordered the last two Sunday nights, and both times it was really superb. We got the meat lovers. It's a great combination of meats scattered out nicely on the pie. The sauce is really tasty. The crust is great. It has a nice crispness to it without being to hard. We got the spinach dip last night, and man, it was great, genuinely great. The pizza crust as the dipper was wonderful. The addition of a bit of goat cheese gives a tang to the dip. We will get it again!

Yelp
Michael's has what we think is the best pizza in Des Moines! Wonderful crust and ingredients, and plenty of them - - the Cajon Creole has great sausage and cheese and just the right amount of jalapeño bite! Also, the Sweet & Salty is my wife's favorite pizza of all time. Fast takeout & very friendly staff. What more could you ask for?! Michael's is really great!

Yelp
This is our favorite go to, delivery Pizza! Prices are competitive for non- chain Homemade Pie! This is a long standing Beaverdale Mom and Pop (Lindsey & John) establishment. 9/10 times perfection. Fast, delicious, and well worth a try! We are regulars from wayyy before they bought the former Poor Michaels Pizza. The excellence has continued from pure B,S,& T. Now, I am hearing that the former Saints and Sinners (closed) has been bought by the owners of Alba and Eatery A - and they are vowing to put this Beaverdale staple out of business. SERIOUSLY? Support Local, support small business.! BTW - I am Not from California..Des Moines, Iowa here!

Yelp
Worst ruben pizza I've ever had! Pretty sure there was no corn beef on this pizza. Pulled back the cheese and it looked like refried beans had been smeared on the crust. No dressing and just not good. I did order at the end of the night but every pizza should be as good as the first.

Cheryl R.

Yelp
Picked up a pizza and spinach dip to take to a friends house. When we opened the boxes we couldn't believe what we saw. Worst looking pizza ever and the dip was even worse. Hardly any toppings, could see right through to the crust, could count the pepperoni on two hands, floppy crust, frozen pizza is 100 times better. Stingy on the cheese. The dip came in a foil container, was at the most maybe 1/2 inch thick. Cold, pasty, we had to scrape it up with the side of a spoon. The whole meal cost $45.00 and it was embarrassingly rotten. It was our first and last time there. Looks nothing like the pictures that they post on Facebook. I can't believe people are giving them a good rating.

Yelp
Saw this joint on yelp and decided to give it a try. Two pizzas and a beer for $40. This was some darn good pizza. Can't wait to stop by again.

Yelp
I had a hard time deciding to write a review. Having read the reviews here I was looking forward to a great pizza. Unfortunately it was so so. The crust was nice and crispy and the sauce was nice. Somehow when it came together it was just a little off the mark. The service was great. The price was little high. A small w/2 toppings was more than expected. The side salad was limp. Very skimpy for $4. I would not do that again. It had only 2 very thin slices of cucumber cut in half, I think to make it look like more. I wish I could be positive but I was disappointed.

Yelp
Michael's tastes and chews like authentic New York pizza, which I've had countless times. I'm not exaggerating when I make the comparison. This is one of the few, actually the only place that I'll get excited about plain cheese pizza. The crust, sauce, cheese and spices on this pizza make toppings entirely unnecessary.

Yelp
Best pizza in a very long time. Had meat lovers with mushrooms added. They are a little pricier than some but very much worth it. Did curbside pickup and only waited a few minutes, very prompt.

Yelp
One of those classic Beaverdale sites they've moved over here from their original location sometime ago. I still buy pizza from them to go usually and it's always home of the driver slice. A really nice couple runs the place and I believe are the owners and they really care about the quality of the pizza and care that you have a good Pizza. they also have a wonderful white sauce Pizza which I think is hard to get right but they do. They also have an individually size pizza which is wonderful if you just feel like pizza but don't want have a bunch of leftovers. If you want to stay they do have beer and pop and it's a nice kind of fun dinner place for two or a small group. so glad they're still around and try to support them as much as I can unfortunately they are kind of located in the less busy of the strip malls in Beaverdale but they're worth searching out and getting the pizza.

Yelp
Michael's Pizza: A quaint Beaverdale joint set in the heart of the neighborhood! I'm fairly certain it's ran by a couple, and I enjoyed that homey feel. The pizza was decent--I would say mostly traditional types on the menu. You can buy bottles/cans of beer. And you can enjoy a night out!

Heather N.

Yelp
Ordered pepperoni pizza. It was just ok. Nothing was bad, it was just mediocre. The crust was bland and a little burnt.
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best pizza I have tasted in the dsm area! They care about their patrons and they menu prices are pretty competitive with the area. Not a ton of parking but it's in a strip mall. The owner was great and wanted to sincerely know how the food was. Which again, was great! Thank you for a great first experience!

Mike K.

Yelp
Got the meatlovers with mushrooms added. Literally the best pizza I've had in years. Price is a little higher than some competitors, but very much worth it. Did curbside and pizza was ready early and they brought it right out. Sometimes tough times call for great pizza!

Yelp
Tried Michael's for first time tonight. Not a huge restaurant but comfortable. I had a half Reuben, half cornbeef special. It was simply amazing. Great flavor and a ton of cheese. Crust was very thin, which I don't normally get. Still the flavor won out easily. I highly recommend trying them.

Yelp
They say they deliver, what a joke every time I have called to order they say to busy, short on staff or some other excuse. The people who answer the phone to take oder are rude and very unprofessional! I placed our order, my husband got there and when got home they did not give us our full order. Now mind you, when my husband got there they said they are not busy at all glad we placed order. I called to see if they would deliver what they forgot and we are in delivery area. The first person talked to said um just a minute. Then rude lady came on phone and said what's the problem. I explained and ask if they would be delivering what they forgot. She rudely said, we are very busy..but you can come back and get it. I replied, my husband said no one was in there. Her rude reply, we run a business and we just got 4 orders. Well guess what...no more order from me! FYI....just to let you know food is not that great! Put rude employees on top of mediocre food. I would recommend to go some were else!

Steve R.

Yelp
Excellent pizza and a great crust. I really like their pizza and have dine in and carry out. I have not tried to get delivery but if you pick it up you can get a drivers slice which is a nice touch. I have eaten here dozens of times, always good.

Yelp
This place ties with Gusto for me. My hubs and I tried the Michaels favorite the 1st time around and just tried the sweet and savory tonight. We also got the stuffed peppers app both times and those are so good!! We tried to make something like those at home but just can't them as to be as good. The pizza has a really great thin crust and the people there are super nice. Definitely give it a try!

Yelp
Found this place to try on Yelp. We had onions rings for an appetizer, all meat pizza and BBQ chicken pizza. Shelby had shrimp pasta. The menu said thick cut onion rings but they were shoestring onions rings. Good flavor in the breading and mixed well with ranch dressing. Pizza was thin crust which isn't my favorite but held up better than most I've had in DM. The rest of the pizza was great and loved the BBQ sauce. Pasta was cooked just right and alfredo was a nice pairing with the shrimp. Prices were average for DM. If you plan on dining in keep in mind the place is small. You want to consider carry out.

Yelp
Great lunch at Michael's today. Best thin crust pizza!!! Great deserts! Love their house salad and house dressing. Michael and reuben pizza are outstanding. In Beaverdale neighborhood. Very nice atmosphere. Good Service.

Yelp
LOVE there pizza !!!!! Best crust, wood fired! I tried the gluten free pizza , and that was good too . Homemade dressings, their ranch is especially wonderful . On Sunday's they have a great wing special . Good customer service as well . I don't eat out much, but Michael's is definitely a go to favorite for me !

Yelp
This is a great little place in the Beaverdale neighborhood. The Reuben pizza is excellent! The staff is very affable and they have a complimentary driver slice to go.

Yelp
Michael's has great pizza, with great ambiance. It is a small location, only about 5 tables. It reminds me of a smaller pizza joint that you might find in a larger city. We tend to go on Friday's, when their special is a large pizza for $12 (1 topping). Staff is always friendly.

Yelp
I can't believe there are not more reviews on this place. My husband I think they have the best pizza in Des Moines. We order at least once a month and are always happy with what we get. Their crust is the perfect authentic old world crust. It is thin, but not too thin. It has just the right amount of chewiness for me. Their sauces are excellent and the ingredients are always fresh. We ordered on Friday night and my husband wanted the taco pizza. They had removed it from the menu (not sure why because my husband swears it is the best), but they told me they would make him one anyway. Great service, great food.

Nick K.

Yelp
Great pizza place. I tried it for the first time tonight and was very pleased. Not only were the pizza and appetizers fantastic, but the service was friendly AND they give you a slice of pizza for the road when picking up! First place I've ever seen do that. I'm honestly surprised the place doesn't have more reviews--we had a great experience and will surely be going back.

Yelp
This capped off my Des Moines weekend. They had a Large special happening on Sunday ($2 off, I think), so we got their Supreme equivalent. It was delicious and just perfect for capping a busy weekend before flying out.

Kris D.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza. Great thin crust, high quality ingredients. The vegetables tasted fresh and fire-roasted, the pizza used fresh garlic and the perfect amount of cheese and sauce. I tasted a bite of their chocolate cake and was blown away. The ganache was so light it tasted like mousse and was a great balance to the darker chocolate cake. I also got two free slices of random cheese pizza. Not sure why. The place was a bit...odd. Perhaps chalk it up to "Beaverdale charm?" The website has a full lunch menu, complete with pizza by the slice selections. The site also said they are open 11am for lunch. We showed up at 11:20am. The door was locked and the lights out. A young man came up behind us on his bike, told us he was a little late, but that it was no problem and the ovens were on. We followed him inside. It would be fair to say it appeared to be disorganized business. There were no offerings of pizza by the slice (although he did say he'd make us something) or any lunch menu as promised on the web. He informed us his tries at a lunch menu had failed. Which makes sense, what with the fact he didn't show up until 11:20. But he seemed to be a super-sweet kid. I think this business could really be successful if they were a little more disciplined.

Regina M.

Yelp
This place was filthy. Old food under the table. Bathroom was overflowing with garbage and toliet beyond filth....will not go back -very unsanitary....

Rich B.

Yelp
This is 5 star all the way and the staff is very friendly. Love the cozy dinning room...they have many choices for pizza and it is fantastic!

Yelp
The thing is, oh, how I'd like to give this a better review, but these kids just don't have their stuff together at all. The pizza is wonderful, but I've been there three times and I've never gotten what I ordered yet! The first time, I walked out the door with someone else's take out order, the second time they got some, but not all, of the toppings I ordered. The third time we sat in the restaurant for this first time. Every single table- every single order! was wrong. They plated takeout orders. They boxed up eat-in orders. They gave the wrong orders to the wrong tables. They came out and asked people what they had ordered because they didn't write it down correctly. And on and on. Our server made me start over listing the toppings we wanted on the pizza and it still came out wrong. Another issue is consistency, just in everything: the second time we ordered their meatball pizza, which at that time was the best I'd ever had. The meatball slices were about 1/4 inch thick. This last time tonight, the meatballs were shaved: sliced so thing you could read a newspaper through them. The place is adorable, the pizza is wonderful, even their beer and case drink selection is interesting, but they need someone in charge who knows the business, because the busboys can't bus, the wait staff can't wait, and somehow or other they just can't deliver anything on time, to order, or in any consistent way. I'm rooting for the kids, but it feels like the lunatics are running the asylum.
