Saturday visit about a week after they first opened saw a modest line. An equally modest selection of pastries suggested focus and quality. French accents among the staff bolstered that suggestion. Counter service only with no tables, and no toilet, though, there are two counters against the windows, with no seats, that might be utilized down the road. Pricing significantly lower than some of the major players around town.
Chocolate Croissant: Classic shape, with a more pale color and a bendable texture, still warm. What it didn't have was that all-important crackle. Flavor was a little different from a classic croissant, with more wheat and a hint of a donut vibe to the dough. Melty chocolate. Still buttery and still good, though I have a few I'd rank higher.
Cannelé de Bordeaux: Sticky, crunchy, and nicely pliable. Burnt tasting (in a good way) on the exterior and very good flavor throughout, with a very moist, custardy center. Superb in every way.
Toasted Oats Cookie with Praliné & Orange Marmalade: A lot going on here, and it kinda works, though a bit busy and more than a bit sweet. Yes, it's a cookie, and cookies are supposed to be sweet, but this is SWEET. Nice butter content and moisture, though; this bendable, tender cookie had lots of good attributes.
Chocolate Chunk Cookie with Buckwheat and Fleur de Sel: Thick cookie with extremely generous content, both as a filling and incorporated into the dough. The buckwheat cut the chocolate intensity just enough to keep it from being a little too much. Another very bendable, very moist cookie.
