Boston’s Best Cake by the Slice | Eater Boston

"It seems like Basque cheesecake has been everywhere in the past few years, and we’d be remiss not to feature the best example on this list. The Hottest New Bakeries Around Boston

"After many, many months of weekend pop-up orders, owner Thomas Ferté has turned the lights on at his highly anticipated French bakery Michette in East Somerville. For the uninitiated, the buckwheat chocolate chunk cookies are a non-negotiable order, but other sure bets include the slices of creamy Basque cheesecake, pistachio chocolate croissants, and a wedge of any tart — sweet or savory — that happens to be on display." - Erika Adams

There’s this adorable little bakery right downstairs called Michette, and honestly… it’s dangerous. The smell of fresh bread in the air? Basically a daily attack on my willpower 😩 And the flavors change all the time — like, you can never get the same pastry twice. I just wanted a coffee today to clear my head, and somehow walked out with three different ones. How am I supposed to lose weight like this?? I’m blaming the croissants 🥐 They’re perfectly flaky, the scones are soft and buttery, and every visit feels like opening a blind box. The prices aren’t terrible either… which makes it even harder to behave 🙃 Little indie spots like this are my weakness. I kinda wish you were here to try them with me — I feel like you’d appreciate the chaos. 😄

Google
Best croissant in Boston by far! I’m addicted to the guava rolls as well. Just the right amount of fruity and not too sweet.

Google
Picked up some delicious pastries for breakfast. Small place with excellent pastry choices and quality. A line does form for their excellent offerings - so do come early! There is no place inside to sit and savor the delectable offerings - best to pickup and enjoy at home. Very friendly staff. We got our order fresh off the oven. A definite go-to bakery next time here. There is street parking up front.

Google
Cute French bakery in East Somerville serving some delicious pastries and bread. About as close to a French bakery as you’ll find in Boston. Small bakery in East Somerville, not the easiest to get to, but at least that means there won’t be a big queue! I tried their almond croissant and their baguette. The baguette was superb: crispy, the perfect amount of chewiness, honestly I was transported back to Paris. Extremely authentic. The almond croissant was very good (and beautiful!) One small criticism which prevents this from reaching 5 stars: I felt like the almond paste could have been more flavourful, and the croissant itself could have been slightly crispier. But still overall solid.

Google
Read about this local but somewhat ‘isolated’ bakery in Cambridge Daily with good reputation of tasty bread and pastries, including baguettes. Came to try out an assortment of things, and of course their 🥖 baguette. Everything was delicious, lovely Basque cheesecake, and the good 🥖! Nice addition as a local favorite bread shop. Will definitely return for more.

Google
I pass by this place all the time and finally decided to stop by. I’m glad I did! It’s a cute little bakery with very warm and cozy vibes. There isn’t a lot of shop space, so keep that in mind. I’ve seen a small line with the last person in the doorway before. I got a spinach and feta za’atar. It was a flaky and crispy pastry. I loved the spices and seeds on top. They added a nice texture to the pastry. The flaky layers were perfect. Even though I ate this a few hours after I bought it, it was still crispy. I’ll definitely come by again! Edit: March 26, 2025 Added photos of the pistachio bun and cardamom bread. The cardamom bread was heavenly with its flakiness and cardamom spice. The pistachio bun was more like a cream donut, but there was a lot of cream which I liked!

Google
I am a HUGE fan of Michette and have been a customer since the early days. I always rave about the viennoiseries to friends and anyone who would listen. I would give 5 stars across the board, but today I was very confused about the quality of the croissant. I’m used to very flaky layers and a light crisp exterior, but today’s was nothing like what I got in the past — just bread-y with a flat butter flavor. I hope this was a fluke because I would consider Michette to be one of the top French bakeries in North America and would like it to continue to be so. To be fair, this was the first time I’d visited Michette in 2025 so there may have been a change in the recipe or something?? Very disappointed.

Google
I woke up at 5am the other day and couldn’t get to sleep, so after a couple hours I ventured out and found Michette. I tell you, this place has the best cinnamon rolls I’ve ever had. 20/10, hands down I would get it again. Perfect texture and none of that sugar goop that just turns the roll into mush. The bread’s good too, they’re probably one of two good bread bakeries in Greater Boston, the other being Clear Flour.

Yelp
Overall: what stands out about this place is their creativity to push the boundaries. They have classics but you definitely should come to try their uniqueness. Food: caneles *chefs kiss*. Don't get dissuaded by the "burnt" exterior. It's a byproduct of the copper molds used that give it that color! In fact it accentuates the caramelized taste and adds incredibly to the custard like interior. The cool goods they have that are off the beaten path include a passion fruit Madeline. You can tell they use real passion fruit by the seeds embedded into the Madeline but the best part is how the seeds aren't sour like usual. Service: was only a grab and go since it's a tiny spot but it's incredibly quick! The line moves very fast so don't feel discouraged.

Yelp
What a lovely little gem--so glad there's great coffee and breakfast treats within walking distance in East Somerville. Friendly, charming staff even when there's a line out the door (which there often is during peak times). Outstanding cold brew and espresso with their homemade syrups are a must-try. Especially their caramel! My favorite pastries are their ham and gruyere and lately I like the chorizo and onion even more. Stop by!

Yelp
I come here regularly and have been a fan since day 1! This is one of the best bakeries in the Medford/Cambridge/Somerville area and they have some really good croissants here if you stop by right when they open. Personal favorite items of mine here are their chorizo croissant (flaky, crackling, savory goodness), pain au chocolat (classic!), and their cream cheese guava roll (yum!). See you tomorrow?

Yelp
Came by here because of the reviews! Nice little bakery/cafe in Somerville. There's some seating outside. I got the almond croissant and it was just okay! I think there was a lack of almonds and it didn't have much crunch/flakiness on the outside. The matcha did not have any matcha flavor so I would not get again. The workers were really nice and quick with service. There's some street parking

Yelp
My friends recommended that I should go here for some time now and I finally made it. I came here around 9:30am on a Sunday. There was a short line about 6 couples in front of me. This is more of a to-go/takeaway spot. Inside is very small with one window table that can fit about 2-3 ppl while standing, the other window table is used for the beverage condiments and napkins, outside in front of each window though are benches you can sit on if you are eager to start eating these yummy pastries. While standing in line you can smell the delicious pastries made. Ordering was easy, everything if not most items were in a showcase with labels. We ordered the croissant beurre (butter croissant), cannelé, pain suisse and the guava roll. The staff was really nice with helping us decide what pastries to choose that were new to us. Unfortunately by the time we got home we noticed the guava roll was missing from our order so I called to explain that to them and they were able to refund it. Other than that little hiccup, I enjoyed all the pastries we got. They were out of the pistachio croissant which is what I was looking forward to the most, so they said next time to call ahead or order online the day before after 5pm and they'll have it reserved.. this goes for any of the pastries but keep in mind the online order is a $10 minimum. So I can't wait to get that next time as well as my guava roll!

Yelp
I was excited to try this bakery, and it didn't disappoint! At Friday around 8am there was no line outside and plenty of items on display. I ordered the almond croissant, and wow was it was amazing. Buttery and flaky with a generous, even layer of frangipane throughout. I really appreciate how they make sure to fill even the ends of the almond croissant with a liberal amount of filling (oftentimes, I've found that bakeries only place filling towards the middle of the croissant). There's no seating inside, but there are some benches outside if you want to enjoy your pastries immediately. I recommend toasting them at home first - it was delicious warmed up!

Yelp
As an ex-big law alumna myself, I can appreciate the trajectory of Thomas, the owner of Michette who exited the big law life and is now making some of the best croissants and pastries I've had. Pro-tip: come here early on the weekends to avoid the lines and also snap up the more popular offerings before they run out. We didn't get a chance to try either the chocolate croissant or the chocolate almond croissant but ... Just look at the beautiful layers in the plain croissant and the pain suisse. I was eating elsewhere soon so wanted to conserve stomach space and originally planned to consume just half of my croissant. Well. Talk about a fool's errand. It was gone in a few bites. Nice, flaky, lots of chew in the inner soft part, crumbs everywhere (as it should be). I think the obvious comparison is Colette - Colette's version is a tad less heavy on the butter, a little more airy. Both are ones I'd eat again without question. I'll be back to try the focaccia, which looked amazing. It's times like these where I wish we had better options in Newton and also where I'm kind of glad I need to go out of my way to get these goodies. Street parking only, have to download the Park app or bring quarters.

Yelp
Nice spot in East Somerville, had a line out the door on a Saturday morning, no AC in the building and the staff wasn't overly cheerful nor rude, cortado was good and pasties were standard. Would go back and give us another go but probably get some bread next time.
google avatar

Yelp
I cannot stress this enough. GET HERE EARLY. They are small batch right now and their stuff is FANTASTIC meaning people EAT IT UP. Everything I've had here has been fabulous. There is nothing like French lamination. Michette is on to something here! PS very nice staff and tasty cold brew

Pat P.

Yelp
Wonderful fresh pastries and friendly staff and owner. Lamination was lovely and their Guava Roll is delicious. Great spot in East Somerville not far from the Assembly Row and Sullivan Square orange line stations. Worth a trip.

Yelp
Saturday visit about a week after they first opened saw a modest line. An equally modest selection of pastries suggested focus and quality. French accents among the staff bolstered that suggestion. Counter service only with no tables, and no toilet, though, there are two counters against the windows, with no seats, that might be utilized down the road. Pricing significantly lower than some of the major players around town. Chocolate Croissant: Classic shape, with a more pale color and a bendable texture, still warm. What it didn't have was that all-important crackle. Flavor was a little different from a classic croissant, with more wheat and a hint of a donut vibe to the dough. Melty chocolate. Still buttery and still good, though I have a few I'd rank higher. Cannelé de Bordeaux: Sticky, crunchy, and nicely pliable. Burnt tasting (in a good way) on the exterior and very good flavor throughout, with a very moist, custardy center. Superb in every way. Toasted Oats Cookie with Praliné & Orange Marmalade: A lot going on here, and it kinda works, though a bit busy and more than a bit sweet. Yes, it's a cookie, and cookies are supposed to be sweet, but this is SWEET. Nice butter content and moisture, though; this bendable, tender cookie had lots of good attributes. Chocolate Chunk Cookie with Buckwheat and Fleur de Sel: Thick cookie with extremely generous content, both as a filling and incorporated into the dough. The buckwheat cut the chocolate intensity just enough to keep it from being a little too much. Another very bendable, very moist cookie.

Yelp
You can tell this place is popular; we arrived to find there was already a line out the door. The entire place is very small, with little seating to accommodate everyone. The service was quick, but as I was waiting for my coffee, I felt there was no good place for me to stand without being in the way. For 10am on a weekend, I was surprised to find out half of their selection was already sold out, leaving us with little to choose from. Their pastries are relatively good. In general, their puff pastry dough lacked the flaky and crisp texture that is expected. The croissant was average; I probably wouldn't get it again. The other two, the fig and bacon pastries, were better, but again missed the mark when it came down to texture. I almost found them to be a little dry. The chocolate chip cookie, on the other hand, was exceptional and I would come back solely for that. One thing I found disappointing was their coffee. I dislike getting American-sized cappuccinos, because they often have a more watered down flavor. I was expecting that since this was advertised as a French bakery, their coffees would be the traditional size, but I was wrong. It didn't taste very good and I probably would not get it again. The prices were all very reasonable, especially for the area. I would come here again, but make sure to be one of the first people in the door to get good pickings.

Yelp
Finally made it to Michette at 9:15 on a Saturday and they were already sold out of their first bake! Sadly I didn't get to try the canele, and the vegan toasted oat cookie was disappointing and underwhelming (it was supposed to be filled with praline and orange marmalade, but maybe they forgot in this batch because there was zero orange flavor and hazelnut praline was just on top which wiped off on the inside of the bag). I really liked the rosemary potato gruyere focaccia, and basque cheesecake, and the baguette was maybe the best I've had in Boston! The cold brew was just ok, but they had interesting latte flavor options (just wish they had Oatly).

Manon M.

Yelp
The pastries here are always STUNNING and soooo delicious. I am from Namur, Belgium and honestly the quality, taste and freshness from Michette fully measures up to the pastries in my home country. I am so proud to have a boulangerie in Boston that I can bring my parents to. Definitely try the apricot pastry if you have the chance!
google avatar

Casey A.

Yelp
Stopped by here at around noon on a Saturday because I'd heard the buzz about it. However, they had clearly had a busy morning because they only had two types of pastries left and were out of non-dairy milk. I got a toasted oat cookie and guava pastry to try and they were both so good! I wanted an oat milk matcha but couldn't get that since they were out of oat milk. I'll definitely be back to try it out again though! There also isn't any space to really sit around except for a couple seats on the sidewalk so plan to grab and go.

Yelp
I was excited to try this new French Bakery in Somerville, so I rushed in the morning of a Wednesday around 8:30am. It was the opening time, and the staff was helpful and friendly. I waited an additional 5 min to get warm chocolate croissant that were baked in the oven. So i started with an iced coffee which taste great, a real espresso strong taste in it. Then i had a Rhubarb raspberry tarte, very delicate & delicious taste with pistachio and rosemary, and finally the warm chocolate croissant, so good that it reminded me of the ones i used to eat in my hometown in France! Excited to try more soon!
google avatar

Lazaro S.

Yelp
The taste of burnt bread lingers. Sadly, the baguette I bought at 1pm on a Wednesday was not worth it. The entirety of the baguette is noticeably burnt(realized this late as I sneaked a bite in my driveway) so I sit wondering why the cashier even handed it to me. I also bought a chocolate chip cookie, on recommendation by the cashier, which turned out to be burnt on the bottom and purposely doughy on one side? ‍ I'm very disappointed and will neither return nor recommend the place to others.
google avatar

Angie T.

Yelp
We drove across town for this place and it was well worth it! We got there before 9.30am on a Sunday and they were already sold out of a few items (including croissants), but we very much enjoyed the ones we tried. The Guava and Honey bacon danishes were amazing - super buttery and flaky, great mix of sweet/savory. The quiche was solid and the praline/orange marmalade cookie had a pretty unique flavor combo. It's quite a small space and I'm assuming the production is also small, so make sure to get there early! They also sell loaves of bread and coffee/tea beverages. If you love pastries, this place is worth checking out!
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
Every bite of the pastries from Michette reveals delicate layers and layers of buttery, flaky goodness. It's a true masterpiece of culinary craftsmanship. With the first bite, you're immediately met with a symphony of textures and flavors. The outer layer is perfectly warm and crisp. Whether you're in the mood for savory, sweet, or just plain simplicity, you cannot go wrong with whatever you decide. We enjoyed the chorizo gruyere and the guava cheese pastries. We arrived promptly at 12 pm on a Saturday and were lucky enough to snag a couple of pastries before the afternoon rush. Just 5 minutes after we arrived, the line was already forming out the door.
google avatar

Yelp
True French bakery in Somerville. Finally!! I was so excited I got one of almost everything!! Delicious. The owner is so nice. And the shop is small and the lines can be long especially on the weekends. But go there, close your eyes and pretend you're in Paris!!
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Such a nice bakery! The baguette was nice and crunchy and had a sour dough taste. The chocolate croissant was really good and I definitely recommend heating it up in the oven. I've been meaning to try this place out and I'm so glad I did. Everything looked so good.

Vincent W.

Yelp
This place has been on my places to try for over a year now, it was so disappointing I came in early to make sure Ii get everything fresh, croissants had zero crunch whatsoever, all bready, I literally squeezed them and not one flake, flavor also not great. There was a banana sesame pastry that consisted of raw dough, completely inedible. Every product that I bought that were made with a croissant dough was just a sad soggy mess
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
Wonderful new small bakery in Somerville. Another one of those were the line out the door caught my eye. Things sell fast and slowly come out the ovens so either arrive early or make do with the limited options. Thankfully they had plenty of chocolate croissants when I got there. They were the real deal, flaky, and very fresh. I also bough some canelé which were also great. Will try more goodies the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Tom W.

Yelp
Recently tried three things and was impressed. One of the best croissants I've had. So flaky. So much butter. Fantastic seeded baguette. And a really solid chocolate chip cookie. The staff was also friendly. Of course, there was a line on a weekend morning, but it moved quickly.

Espresso T.

Yelp
I love how the French pastries look at the counter, but I have been disappointed a number of times over the last several months so I will give them a 3.5 star rating. I truly hope the owner examines the quality to make improvements. The flaky croissants, and there are a variety of them that use the same/similar dough, all have the same issue - a center that feels undercooked, soggy and very greasy. I have tried the plain croissant, the pain au chocolat, and the ham and cheese croissant. They all have the same issue. I really wonder why the owner isn't doing any quality control given that it feels like that it aspires to be a good French bakery. There are several places in Boston that do a better job, and it's very disappointing that Michette has not made any improvements on this for so many months since its opening. The ham and cheese sandwich was very good, and so was the pistachio cheesecake. The buckwheat cookie though, was just okay. It was way too sweet and it taste way too one-dimensional because the sweetness was overpowering.
google avatar

Estephanie A.

Yelp
I bought the chorizo Gruyère croissant and pistachio chocolate croissant. It was everything a croissant should be - so flakey and light and buttery. They don't skimp on the fillings either so good and savory. I couldn't even get a picture of the chorizo croissant because I ate it so fast. The barista was very friendly too. It's a small neighborhood bakery so don't plan on sitting inside as space is limited/not a wifi telework spot . BUT OH SO WORTH THE STOP!

Ruby Y.

Yelp
Amazing food and drinks. In my group we got a chocolate pistachio croissant, a guava cheese pastry, banana bread, a baguette, iced tea, and an iced London fog. The drinks were good, but the food was out of this world, especially the croissant and guava pastries. The baguette was one of the best I've had in this area, and I would absolutely go back. They were very welcoming and were kind enough to explain what was in many of the pastries. One thing we didn't realize from reviews is there's no place to sit inside, but there's a park close by so if the weather is nice it's a great picnic.
google avatar

Judy O.

Yelp
This is a real gem! An authentic French bakery. Incredible baguettes, croissants, sandwiches...and don't get me started on their Basque cheesecake. Omg...silky smooth deliciousness! Check them out. You won't regret it!

Joanna M.

Yelp
Best chocolate croissant I've ever had! And I lived in Montreal for 3 years. Almost didn't get coffee because of a review on here but I'm glad I did - the latte was excellent. Cute little place if somewhat out of the way, but I wouldn't mind making the trek!

Ov M.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but they have a ton of work to do. They made several mistakes on my online orders. Every time I go in, whether ordering online or walking, the wait is always really really long. Their baked goods range from amazing to " why did I just pay $10 for this?". The prices for small coffee are also pretty expensive. They are a new business and I hope they do well and make adjustments. I gave them a few shots before I wrote this review.
google avatar

Natasha T.

Yelp
Cute little bakery with the best pain au chocolat outside of France! I will come back to try the canelé.
google avatar

AJ K.

Yelp
I was so excited to hear that a French bakery was opening up in East Somerville this year, and Michette definitely lives up to the hype! The kitchen is constantly turning out baked goods, so you are guaranteed to get fresh, hot croissants, focaccia, cookies, and cakes from a friendly local business. Looking forward to trying new menu items in the future :)

Hannah Y.

Yelp
We've been ordering goodies from Thomas at Michette since last fall before their brick and mortar finally opened this spring. Their chocolate chip cookies are the best we've had-- crispy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside, with just the right amount of sea salt and so much butter that I get slight notes of toffee. But these days, since the brick and mortar opened, we are all about the croissants! So flaky, chewy, and buttery. The type they'll have out seems to change based on the day (and maybe even time of day), but all of the croissants we've had: plain, chocolate (probably my favorite), and dark chocolate pistachio (my husband deemed it the best thing he's eaten in recent memory) have all been stellar. I would definitely recommend gettting there in the first hour or so of opening though -- the pastries are always the most delicious the sooner out of the oven.

samsara w.

Yelp
The baked goods are very good and I would highly recommend them, in particular the chocolate croissant, sourdough, raisin croissant and cinnamon bun. However, I will not be returning here ever again. On a Friday morning (holiday week between Christmas and New Years), it was not crowded but the server was disdainful and mean. Granted I am a middle aged woman of color with a kid and do not fit the white hipster profile of the server, I see no reason to receive such sub par service as a paying customer. He purposefully looked away while handing me my bag and appeared to be greatly inconvenienced to serve me. He was also annoyed that I asked for one more pastry to be added to my order. I felt unwelcome and ignored. If you're not a young white hipster, stay away. I drove here from Cambridge and will never return.
google avatar

Ted W.

Yelp
This is the best new addition to the neighborhood in a while! croissants and coffee are very good and so is the sourdough. Service was very friendly and helpful. Super small and has a European vibe. Wish I lived right next door!

M M.

Yelp
Amazing!!!! Always something new and exciting coming fresh from the oven. Awesome quality, inventive items, friendly staff, and great coffee!
google avatar

Rohan L.

Yelp
Super lucky to have this new gem in the neighborhood. Amazing pastries (on par with the old Cafe Madeleine in Back Bay) and a nice ambience. Every time we go they have cooked up something new and I've yet to be disappointed! Hope Michette is here for years to come!

Mona K.

Yelp
I so, so, so, wanted to love love love this. But who repeatedly goes to a french bakery an hour after it opens and finds that you cannot purchase a single croissant or chocolate croissant? No croissants? Ever? i can't keep going to have my heart broken. so it is only to la saison :( always want to support an artisan small business so i truly wish them the best.

Brennan H.

Yelp
I had a ham and cheese sandwich and a coffee from here for lunch. Basic enough, but they get the little things right that elevate the sandwich. The ham is fresh, the cheese is sharp and flavorful, and the mustard is punchy. The coffee is tasty as well, much better than I expected. Overall a great lunch spot.

Adline J.

Yelp
I ordered a slice of Banana Bread and it was completely raw in the center. The ambiance is nice and cashier was friendly, but my first item from there was just not so good....

Amanda D.

Yelp
absolutely fantastic! everything is incredibly fresh and tasty. love to see a new place open in the neighborhood

Julia G.

Yelp
The coffee and pastries are all delicious - I'm so happy this place opened in East Somerville! The pain au chocolat is my children's favorite, but I also enjoy trying all the different pastries they have day to day. There is no seating inside, but there are two benches right out front. Such a great addition to the neighborhood!

Sravya A.

Yelp
I was thrilled to discover a French bakery on Broadway, Somerville and it has quickly become my favorite place for a morning coffee and amazing treats. Their chocolate croissants, peach croissants with vanilla cream, cardamom buns and oat milk lattes are my favorite. I like that they rotate their menu, offering new and delicious pastries each day. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. They don't have any seating indoors yet but a couple benches outside where you can sit and enjoy your treats. Highly recommend this place!
