The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"This beloved downtown St. Paul dining car is back in action after a four-year hiatus — pop in for eggs with hash browns, pancakes, or, if you’re feeling feisty, a breakfast burger. Early birds take note: Micky’s isn’t open a full 24 hours like it used to be, but it does fire the grills at 6 a.m. daily. The car was fabricated in 1937." - Stacy Brooks

12 Notable Twin Cities Restaurant and Bar Openings in October - Eater Twin Cities

"After a long, dark pandemic hiatus, the lights are back on at Mickey’s Dining Car in downtown St. Paul. The diner attempted to quietly reopen October 3, but news spread fast, and within an afternoon customers were queuing for pancakes, burgers, and hashbrowns. Mickey’s isn’t quite back to being open 24 hours a day, though: Current hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m." - Justine Jones

The oldest restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"There was a time when these dining cars dotted the countryside. Now, only a handful remain. A must when in St. Paul. A wonderful dining experience in a converted train cab. The staff are very friendly and the service quick. The food is very good. If you sit at the counter, you're literally right next to the flat top. Both breakfast and lunch are very good having been here multiple times while visiting. It can be hard to find a seat as it dies get busy. There is ample parking in a lot right next to it.

Excited we were finally able to stop into this landmark! Its cute and a fun experience. Food was ok. We will probably try something different if we go back. The cook was really friendly and made the experience better! The pancakes were great! We also ordered an omelet and ham and cheese sandwich. The kids loved sitting at the counter. Definitely stop in if you haven't been here yet!

We found this place just randomly, by searching restaurants around our hotel, and i have to say it was an amazing experience. My 11 year old son has never seen a traditional diner. Well this thing was a beauty. I had to explain what that thing in the wall was (coin operated jukebox). Super cool vibe. We had double stack pancakes, Cluck N Chuck Burger and Mickeys Sputnik Burger. We weren't even that hungry but we devoured our food withing 10-15 mins. Burger patty's we're tender, delicious and super juicy. I always say the messier the burger the better it is. This was one of the best damn burgers I've ever had. Must visit if youre in St.Paul, MN.

Google
What a fun and unique hole in the wall diner! This family-operated establishment has been featured in numerous media, including Food Network shows. And has hosted a long list of celebrities who’ve visited their diner!

Mickey’s diner is back downtown! Finally had a chance to stop in and was everything we hoped and more! It still looks like an old timey diner which is great. The big deal was the food! The owners are smart and offer all non-pork meat options! The beef bacon? Say what now? It’s amazing! Turkey ham and cheese sandwich? Holy buckets outstanding! The picture shows both plus their O’Brien hash browns…drooling yet? We’ve now been there twice and will continue to as much as we possibly can!

For starters we got in there we were ordering takeout it took a minute to get our order going. We were sitting right in front where the food is being made and unfortunately it was cross-contamination Central, the gentleman that was cooking had put gloves on touch the hash browns touch the hamburgers touch the bacon touch the register. I really felt like walking out but I decided to give it a chance. Unfortunately the french fries weren't even Frozen they were sitting out which made them soggy and nasty I asked for extra crispy fries definitely did not get that no seasoning on the hamburger or the French fries. I was highly disappointed I would be better off going to flameburger

Stopped to have breakfast at Mickey's this morning. What a great historical place, quite the queasy spoon atmosphere where we had to sit at the counter as there were only 4 tables. Mom had a pancake and sausage patties. Hubby and I had eggs, beef bacon, and toast. Hubby also had hash browns. Our meals were very good and so was the coffee. We were served fast, and they kept our coffee cups full.

Absolutely charming and unforgettable! Mickey's Diner is a hidden gem, an adorable train car turned diner that offers a dining experience like no other. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and an inviting atmosphere that set the stage for a fantastic meal. We chose to sit at the bar, which turned out to be the best decision we could have made. This seating arrangement not only gave our kids an incredible front-row view of the chef in action, but it also created a wonderfully interactive experience for the whole family. The chef, a true master of his craft, was not only efficient but also incredibly personable. He began preparing our kids' orders before the waitress even handed him the ticket, which spoke volumes about his attentiveness. What truly made our visit special was how the chef engaged with our family. He took time to ask our kids about their trip to the Minnesota Children's Museum. The atmosphere felt less like traditional dining and more like enjoying a meal with friends. Our kids couldn’t stop raving about it, repeatedly declaring it the "best restaurant ever" and eagerly asking when we could return! Now, let’s talk about the food. It was hands down the freshest I’ve ever had, even rivaling my own cooking efforts. Each dish went from the hot stove to our plates in no time, which allowed the flavors to shine through with vibrant freshness and care. I actually had to wait before I could eat my food because it was so hot. Although the burger was greasier than I prefer it was delicious and I would order it again. The fries were addicting, very similar to five guys. My kiddos ordered breakfast foods. French toast with sunny side up eggs, pancakes (which the chef made into smiling bears) and sausage. Not photographed because my kids devoured them as soon as they landed in front of them. Whether you're searching for a family-friendly spot or simply want to indulge in exceptional food within a unique setting, Mickey's Dining Cart is a must-visit. We left with full bellies and happy hearts, and I can hardly wait (I saw someone's omelette and it was as big as my head! I definitely am trying that next time) for our next visit! I highly recommend this delightful diner for a culinary experience that promises to create cherished memories.

Yelp
What a super cool spot! It's your Classic dinner. The spot was super cool, the staff was great and the food was exactly what you want ur dinner experience to be. My 12 year old said it was the best breakfast he has ever had. We are a hockey family and knowing scenes from Mighty Ducks were filmed here was super cool. If ur not going to Mickeys you are missing out on a super cool experience.

Yelp
Good to come back here after so many years. The service was efficient and friendly. The space was worn and cramped but not messy. I ordered the One eyed jack and it came out quickly. I wish there was a bit more meat than a slice of ham but overall it wasn't pretty good. I loved the hashbrowns! The food was tasty and little greasy, exactly like you'd expect from a diner.

Yelp
REPOSTED Located in downtown St. Paul on the corner of Saint Peter and seventh, this is Americana at its finest! Open for 70 years straight without a break until the pandemic, the diner has just (unofficially) reopened and is serving limited hours. Iconic to have entertained dozens of celebrities who make it a destination when they're in the area. Featured on Food Network, Alton Brown's feasting on asphalt and man versus his food to name. A few, this diner has appeared in multiple culinary magazines. Breakfast served all day long, plenty of comfort food available , not a stop for folks that are trying to stay on a diet! The diner has four tables and a rail car long counter, so be prepared to wait for a seat if you show up at peak hours! Even if you're lucky enough to grab a seat pretty quickly, this is not a place for those that are in a hurry! Comfort food takes plenty of time, so be patient. Prices are what you would expect these days, plenty of caffeinated beverages, no alcohol at this location. Parking in the area is limited to meter street parking or parking garages. Art Deco style is definitely a throwback and definitely fits all categories that covers Zagat, best Hole in the Wall, and a favorite of the Twin Cities, to name a few. Diner is standard comfort food fare. Check it out and inhale some history

Yelp
If you're going for basic American breakfast and a nostalgic diner car experience this is your place. Anything outside of that I don't recommend.

Yelp
Classic, legendary establishment. Pancakes were good. Place was small, but you could tell that from the the outside. Service was wonderful.

Yelp
The food, quaint setting in a converted rail car, and the staff all combine to make a great and unique old-fashioned dining experience.

Yelp
Mickey's is back open again with a soft opening. It hasn't changed much at all. The place was busy and the food was great .

Yelp
ITS TURBO TIME!!!! I love this place. I came here for a late dinner around 6pm and it was my 1st time. It wasn't packed at all due to the holidays which was great. Plenty of free parking so I loved it. The food was incredible. I got a simple hamburger, fries and soda and all of it was delicious! The staff were professional and friendly. The atmosphere and decor of this old diner was incredible. I felt like I traveled back to the 1930s. FYI Mickey's Diner was featured in the movie, JINGLE ALL THE WAY. I highly recommend this place!!!

Yelp
Historic diner with lunch counter style seating in a rail car. Amazing and friendly staff who were attentive and efficient and fun. I ordered the homemade fries, a great burger and I got to try Biscoff cookie shake that was not on the menu. All were delicious.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Staff are great! Service is awesome! I will be back now that everything is reopened!! I might come when they are open at night! I'll be back

Yelp
4-Stars for this Minnesota-tourist! So I LOVE retro, nostalgic things... I've seen Mickey's on a few Food Network shows & the Mighty Ducks movies so stopping by was a must for my visit to St. Paul! It was about a 20 minute drive from Downtown Minneapolis. It has its own small parking lot and it across the street from both the Minnesota Children's Museum and Juvenile Hall (no, I'm not joking!)! So going in I think you have to be prepared for the following: 1) You might have a parking problem if that small lot is full 2) The diner is TINY inside- there's the counter with about 15-20 stools and about 4 small tables! Like one reviewer had mentioned before me, if you have a wheelchair or a large party this Mickey's location probably won't work for you. 3) Unless you get super luck and come at an off-time, you'll probably have a wait. 4) Don't come expecting amazing, delicious food- you're here for the ambiance, nostalgia, & experience! That said, I had a great time here! I grabbed a stool at the counter and had fun reading about Mickey's history in the menu. Service is sassy & it's fun to people watch! I ended up ordering a bowl of mulligan stew & an Arnold Palmer. The most amazing meal I've ever had? Of course not! But it was a great bowl of classic American diner fare on a chilly afternoon! So nostalgic- it was like eating mom's home cooking. Everyone else seemed to be ordering breakfast or burgers. The best part of this whole meal was getting to step back in time and experience this little retro diner! You definitely don't run into many places like this anymore & this one was truly a gem for anyone who appreciates history/depression-era shtick! There are a few souvenirs you can take home with you- super heavy $7 coffee mugs or postcards. SO glad I took the time to visit~ would definitely come back if I'm ever in Minnesota again!

Yelp
Food: This place is FAMOUS for its classic, delicious diner food. However when I finally tried this place a few weeks ago, I was slightly disappointed. I ordered the steak (medium) + eggs and the meat game out well done and pretty tough. My boyfriend got the chili omelette which was pretty flavorless. He's been here plenty times with raging success, so it's possible we were here on an off day, although it was Sunday. Venue: For the rare few who don't know already, it's a first come first serve diner car that only accepts cash. There's a small parking lot too.

Yelp
N O S T A L G I A L I V E S H E R E Wow, hasn't changed since the last time I was here in 1967. True story. But I didn't dine and dash this time :-) Teenagers, jeez! The menu proudly boasts that the eggs are prepared in BUTTER!! So my scrambled eggs were wonderful, and the buttermilk pancakes were so eggy they were yellow. The bacon was cooked to order, and I can't complain, decent quality bacon. The individual tabletop jukeboxes had all old songs on them, not sure if they work. The booths and pretty much everything else were well worn, but that fact only added to the ambience. Our blonde waitress was unflappable no matter what anyone sent her way. There seemed to be a couple cooks, and a busboy. This is a well oiled (buttered) working machine. This was an experience, not a gastronomical delight. Expect the people watching to be the BEST part. Sit back, enjoy the meal, savor all the nuances, and check this place off your list. TOO SCARED TO USE THE RESTROOM

Yelp
Stopped at Mickey's one morning for breakfast with my foodie buddy before our meeting. The location we were going was providing breakfast but with Mickey's so close we opted for the better breakfast. I'd been to Mickeys a few times over the years but the last time was at least 10 years ago. Wow, its been that long. I've always ordered breakfast and always ordered the same thing. I keep saying that I should try lunch or dinner sometime but I do enjoy their breakfast and haven't got up the courage to dry something different yet. I always get their Denver omelette with O'brien Potatoes. The omelette's at Mickey's are huge. Easily enough for a couple of meals. They are also fluffy and light. I've had a lot of omelettes in my day and the omelette here at Mickey's is one of the biggest and fluffiest. I also love their O'brien potatoes with real potatoes. This is all served with some toast. This is big breakfast. Mickey's is definitely a St Paul institution. Nothing like eating in a diner with all that history. They are open 24 hours not I just need to try lunch or dinner sometime. But I do enjoy that breakfast.

Yelp
My friend and I wanted to try this place out since we've seen it on tv, in music videos, and know tons of celebrities have also sat in the very same seats we did! We were also craving diner food/breakfast so this seemed like the perfect spot. The car is great - aesthetically pleasing both on the outside and inside. There isn't a ton of seating, but that's all part of the experience (I think). I ordered the all-favorite breakfast-type deal with sausage patties and they were delicious. I usually go with bacon, but that day I was feeling saucy! The eggs were so buttery and fluffy and the hash browns were typical "diner" hash browns. Unfortunately, I could only eat maybe half of the hash browns they gave me since all the outer portions were charred/burnt. But the complete star of the plate were the two slices of raisin bread slathered in butter. These two slices made everything worth it: the wait, the burnt hash browns, and the small dining car. I would order the raisin bread time and time again. Yum. Overall, I'm glad I get to say I've been to Mickey's Diner. However, I don't know that it was better than other diner food I've had. I'll be back for that raisin bread though!

Yelp
After almost 5 years of living in the Cities, I finally got around to trying out Mickey's Diner and I have to say that it will probably be my last. It's my best guess that the regulars and nostalgia keep this place going. The size of the interior didn't throw me--I expected small--but the garbage all over the floor sure did. So. Much. Trash. It made it hard to enjoy eating when it just felt gross in there--but eat we did. I got America's Favorite All-Day Meal with scrambled eggs, bacon, wheat toast, and hashbrowns. I also got a chocolate shake because that's clearly what you get to go with breakfast. The food was good--nothing spectacular, the service was good, but the lack of sanitation going on in that dining car will deter me from going back.
google avatar

Allison H.

Yelp
Overall disappointed in the quality of the whole meal. Food wasn't cooked through all the way and the salad was sitting in water.

Yelp
First time here. Got there right at shift exchange so we had to wait 15 mins but enjoyed the atmosphere. Staff very friendly and joked with us and very attentive during our wait. Our party of 3 ordered and food was prepared in front of us and came fast. Waiter Keith was fun and kept a nice conversation with us all as we enjoyed the meals. Was in town for a hockey game from Omaha to see our Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Wild and surely will be back to eat here.
google avatar

Yelp
Racists. I went there for lunch with a friend once. Pre-pandemic. I didn't end up eating the food I was served. Here's why. My friend and I had been working on a fire damaged home. I am a bearded white male. I was somewhat dirty from working on a burnt home. Before they would take my order, I was repeatedly questioned about 'where I'm from'. I said Minneapolis. They said "No! Like what country are you from man! Jesus!" This was said with a loud voice. Like maybe I didn't understand english.........anyway it kept on like this for some time before they would take my order. You get the idea.

Yelp
This is a must if you're in St. Paul. It's a place shown on The Mighty Ducks.. and it peaked my interest when I watched the movie before visiting St. Paul. It is within walking distance of the Xcel Center and has some of the best greasy spoon food you could find. The seating is tight, so don't be surprised if you have to wait or the service is slow. IT'S WORTH IT. I am literally still thinking about the blueberry pancakes. They're some of the best I have ever had. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Bring cash for a tip but can pay with card for food. ATM at the entrance Food: I got the Mickey special and the beans were good, the fries were ok and the burger was awful. However you received a large portion of ok. Service: it's interesting. They are not teenagers and everyone was middle age or older. There were a few times when people were trying to sit down at a booth and the bus boy (man) stated very strongly not to sit down till cleaned. My food came out and my waitress actually stole a French fry from the top as she was scooping up my chili. The joke was on her as it sure seemed like that fry had a hair on it as the plate sat in front of me for a minute coming off the grill. Railcar was pretty cool. I wouldn't say cleanliness is their highest priority or even high on their priority list but I did feel like I stepped back into the mighty ducks years. Would I head back. Definitely not but it still brought a smile to my face and much laughter hearing the not going above and beyond for the customers. Maybe that's their montra and if that is the case then they do a good job.

Yelp
My family history with Mickey's Diner begins during WWII when my father was a busboy. Recently, my brother came to town having long ago left Minnesota. He wanted Minnesota food later in the evening after I picked him up from a late evening flight. Mickey's!! He had a sandwich. I had a (huge) bowl of Mulligan Stew. Sadly, we lacked the appetite for dessert.

Yelp
After many years of hearing about Mickey's Diner, my husband and I decided to have a "Saint Paul Day" and go to some of the places we've always heard about but haven't tried yet, so we took a day off work and traipsed around St Paul. We decided to start the day at Mickey's Diner as it's an icon and definitely a place everyone should try out. We went at about 9:30am on a Thursday so obviously not a busy time, and got right up to the counter. Got a cup of coffee (very good--dark and rich), and I ordered "The Twos" and my husband ordered the BLT. The Twos comes with two pancakes, two slices or bacon or sausage, and two eggs. The person behind the counter was in training which was great fun for me as I got to learn some things as the line cook taught her (timing things, identifying doneness, how to make an over-medium egg correctly etc). It was really a treat for me because being a line cook in a diner is an art form and being able to learn some of that was a lot of fun for me and will improve my own breakfast cooking at home! My husband got the BLT and fries. Very basic sandwich but good ingredients, and the fries were perfect so I stole some from him when he wasn't looking! Good stuff :) There isn't a lot of room in here and if you take a seat during a busy time I would imagine that they will push you to figure out what you want pretty quickly so that they can turn over the counter/tables. I'd read that they could be pretty abrupt with people, but I found them very friendly and really enjoyed the experience. There is a parking lot right next door which was really helpful for easy parking. The menu has the standards and the food comes out really hot and really fast! It was a wonderful way to start the day and experience a St Paul icon :)

Yelp
A novelty at best, though the friendly staff bump this up to a three star visit. We stopped in for breakfast while on an extended layover in Minneapolis and it was walking distance from our hotel while offering a better price than the extortionist DoubleTree restaurant, so we went for it. The staff was very friendly and apologetic for not being as attentive as they would like on account of being short-handed during our visit. I appreciated the honesty. Food was just ok. The French Toast was lacking in both flavor and actually being toast. The regular toast was really just warmed bread; is that a Minneapolis thing, serving toast as light as the majority of the city's population? The over easy eggs were decent--though I guess you can't really screw that up--and I didn't care for the sausage patties. If you're into this kind of thing, you should really pull up, take a picture, and keep on driving.

Yelp
I decided to stop at this downtown St. Paul iconic diner before a show. It is exactly what you picture when you think of a diner. Bar stools lined up at a counter with the cook and waitress working behind. I ordered the patty melt with fries and a classic bottled root beer float. The patty melt was excellent and I also got a side chat with the cook. He was very friendly! If anyone reads this, please take ONE THING away-- they accept credit cards but tips are cash only! They do have an a conveniently located in their entry but I loath using an atm and their fees. Overall, a cute diner experience and expect diner food.

Yelp
Love this diner! It looks like something that popped out of the movies! Did not get a chance to try their food, but wow, does their exterior look inviting! Gotta plan a drop by the next we go to St Paul!

Yelp
Oh what a beautiful classic diner, complete with greasy delicious food, sticky floors, a jukebox, and tiny tables. I magically came at a time when there was a short line and good weather, otherwise you'll be standing outside waiting for a table. Mickey's is well worth it though. Between our table we had an array of breakfast foods and burgers and everything was so good. The pancakes, the crispy hashbrowns, and juicy burgers were all worth a long wait. Our waitress was a tad scary and very to the point, but it went with the classic diner vibe. You won't find anything else like it in the twin cities. And the best part is that it's open 24/7 to fulfill all your food needs at any time of day. They also have a small parking light so if your luck you won't have to park on the street.

Yelp
Mickeys is a piece of nostalgia it is a historic diner , the staff are friendly and funny, the food is just good old fashion dinner food. I had the O'Brien which is eggs potatoes green peppers onions and ham with wheat toast. It tastes as good as it looks.

Yelp
We always come here when in town. The people working here are very nice and funny. I had Grilled Ham and Cheese and in the party they had the stew and Patty Melts. All were really great. We would and always will come here to eat.

Yelp
A classic! I've been coming here since the 1990's. Love it! It never changes and better not! The parking lot has gotten increasingly smaller and I generally go there after regular hours to avoid the crowds. The bathroom is still downstairs, for real! This is a class 24/7 joint which serves their whole menu all the time. My favorite thing on the menu is the Classic, which is a gorgeous cheese burger served with hashbrowns and mulligan stew - perfect for me because I can never decide between breakfast, stew and a burger. The burger is a lot like I remember McDonald's burgers 35 years ago (they used to be good!) with a mushy bun and juicy thin cut burger, American cheese, sir! For breaky I like a good omelette, which they glady serve with toast and hashbrowns. Homemade blueberry pancakes are fantastic, with real blueberries!!! My favorite used to be the O'Brian Special and I think I overdid it! Still amazing though! I've had a steak and it's good with eggs, nothing too special but what do you expect? It's not a steak place. But the pork chop will stop you! Good and tender, juicy! I'm not sure I'd try a dinner here - just not that kind of a place. But you can get a strawberry shake as well as an ice cream float, sundae, or a slice of pie! Check it out for nostalgia and delicious diner food!

Yelp
I went to the diner around 10:40 p.m. yesterday. I experienced some really bad service. The waiter kept telling me and my friends that they were cleaning up for the next shift and we said okay we can wait the 20 minutes for the shift change. They then proceeded to act as if we were rushing them or making them feel uncomfortable. We were not given silverware or straws. I had to get up and ask for them and when I did the waitress told me not to talk because she was counting her drawer. I stood there for about another three minutes until the dishwasher came out and gave me the straws and silverware. I ordered a orange float which was halfway melted when I got it. A lady came in with her husband and continued to ask me and my friends if we wanted to buy weed. I kept telling her no but she persisted on asking me. Then another lady comes in and sits next to us and she begins to have a drug induced seizure. We get up and tell the staff what's going on but they did nothing. She took out a aerosol can and started huffing it. She then start shaking and foaming at the month. The staff still did nothing. The staff didn't acknowledge her until she passed out for about a minute. It took for another customer to say something for them to notice. The staff were being very rude to each other and making inappropriate gestures in front of me and other customers. I usually don't write reviews for places I think are bad, but people have to know what I experienced at this establishment. That was most likely my first and last time at Mickey's. Please be safe fellow Yelpers. P.S. the food was actually pretty bad. They gave us cold fries that tasted like paper. They need a big change over at that place.

Yelp
I was glad to finally be able to try this iconic diner in Saint Paul. Had to stand and wait behind the diners at the bar to get a seat. Very tight quarters! And be prepared to yell your order over to the waitress - even at the bar - because she might not be able to actually reach you. The malt was good, if a bit smaller than others. The fries were hot and fresh from the fryer! Yum. Note that while they take cards, they don't allow you to put tips on card payments. Cash only for those for some reason.

Yelp
If you wanted healthy food, you came to the wrong place. This place is for burgers and greasy breakfast foods. Also, they make good ice cream shakes and sundaes. They don't skimp on the ice cream. I like the feel of this place. It's got lots of old timey charm. Cool atmosphere and the food is average in general. I wouldn't typically come here for a meal, but it's a cute landmark location to bring your out of town friends. I like that they have a parking lot. However it's small and will fill up quickly. Also it's kind of a tight space inside the restaurant. I don't recommend groups larger than four. Love that it's open 24/7, even on Christmas.

Yelp
Last night I paid $38 for a measly plate of five scallops at a big-deal Italian restaurant in St. Paul. Today, I walked 1,000 feet further, and stepped into Mickey's Diner and was treated to a wonderful experience in a setting that has to be seen to be believed. I paid a whopping $7.95 plus tax for a "Black and Blue Bowl' - a nice fresh dinner salad with a 4-ounce strip steak, fried onions, and Texas Toast. Comfort food nirvana!! How cool is Mickey's??? It's an old dining car from the 1940's, it has been featured in dozens of TV shows and movies, and best of all - it never closes- its open 24/7/365.. It's like stepping into a time machine and being propelled backwards in time six decades. I sat at the counter, and soaked in the atmosphere. Here is what I saw. A super polite young server who seemed like he stepped out of the Archie comics. A blue haired short order cook, who was as nice as could be. Some businessmen and down-on-their-luck types sitting alongside me at the counter, a family of three enjoying burgers fries and shakes, an older couple deciding they wanted pancakes, and two chatty college aged young ladies who laughed all night and were adorable. People of every description and walk of life come to Mickeys for good old fashioned honest food at a super reasonable price. What a cool place!! .

Yelp
Always a good conversation with the cooks and waiters. Mike is one of my favorites. The milkshakes and fries never disappoint. It's also a good place to take pictures, whether it's with the blinking florescent sign outside or with the barstools as a background while sitting in the booths. So happy they are open 24 hours a day. Their pancakes are also absolutely wonderful and oh so tasty. It's a go to place when I want to take people from out of town somewhere fun, original, that they wouldn't otherwise know about (unless they were a big fan of mighty ducks or something) I'll even take friends there like after prom or before walking around the city a bit. Glad I've been going there since I was little and excited to take my kids there when I'm grown up as well. Quick note: remember to get the red tape key for the women's bathroom. I always forget so I have to go back and switch keys

Yelp
Mickey's is an experience. For my fellow Southernerns, it reminds me of Waffle House, just on a smaller scale. There's mostly bar seating inside and a handful of booths. We sat at the bar right by the cook on bar stools. It was neat to watch him whip everything up. Omelettes and pancakes are HUGE and delicious. I enjoyed the bacon the most--nice and crisp with great flavor. Prices seemed reasonable on the menu, but 2 cokes and 3 meals equated to $40+ without the tip, which was a little steep for what we got in my opinion. Portions are large and tasty, don't get me wrong, but the environment is loud, crammed, and service is just okay. Lots of yelling and barking at customers about food, just because of noise. It was cool to eat in a train car though. I don't think I'd go back, given my hotel offers a free breakfast, but it was cool for the novelty of eating in a train car!

Yelp
Came here at 2AM on a Friday night because you can't go to Mickey's in daylight. After quite a night out this food hit the spot. As far as service and cleanliness don't expect 5 stars because this is the ultimate diner dive. I ordered a patty melt and loved it but also ended up eating my friend's pancakes, like 3 of them. I was absolutely stuffed but they were so good I could not stop eating them. Perfect amount of crisp on the edges and soaked in syrup. I think they may have had crack in them, or maybe just a ton of lard. Same thing, right? Definitely a MSP bucket list place that I'm happy I visited!!

Yelp
I went here with my girlfriend at about 4 on a weekday, we were worried it was going to be packed but there was more than enough room for 2, seating is mostly at a counter however there are 4 or 5 booths that can seat about 4 people. The atmosphere was great, just like the old fashioned diner it represents. We both got burgers and they were delicious, there's a heap of fries if you order them!! The price is right too, under 10 dollars a person!! It's located right near the capital building so if you're new to or just visiting the Twin cities it's right near some landmarks you'll want to see!!! **Make sure to bring some cash, they take credit cards but can't add tip on to them.** All in all If you're not looking for anything fancy and just want some delicious cheap burgers or other diner food this is most definitely the place for you! If you don't like standard diner atmosphere/service/food then you probably shouldn't go, because you'll leave with nothing but complaints.

Yelp
Even Tom Waits wouldn't eat here! I really love cool old diners. There are so many great ones with amazing food. I seek them out in my extensive travels. Every now and then it's ceases to be an adventure and becomes a nightmare. This was one of them. Rude, filthy, disgusting and depressing. The Board of Health should shut this place down. I ordered eggs and buckwheat pancakes. The Slovenly cook took them out of the freezer and threw them on the grill covered in hamburger grease and cooked them till they were hard as shingles. The sausage patties were hockey pucks. They were so hard that the cheap silverware bent when I tried to cut them. The eggs were the most slimy puddle of grease I've ever seen in my life. I hesitated to even drink my Diet Coke. I threw $20 on the counter and left.

Yelp
I was reminded of this icon on the historic register while watching Food Paradise. What always stands out are the hash browns, they add water to them on the grill which is the secret to their crispiness. I haven't been in awhile but they had my favorite coffee which was simply Sysco brand. I hope they haven't changed it.

Yelp
Closed when I got there. This place is advertised as a 24 hour diner, so I don't understand how it can be closed at 2 pm on a Saturday.

Yelp
What a scam... I donated to the Mickey's GoFundMe page 2 years ago, they have been closed for 3 years. I don't think it takes 3 years to refurbish a train car! Scammers!

Yelp
Landmark place, but greasy spoon. Everyone gave their best effort, but nothing was really that great. I think if you're in the area, go there and take pictures out front, but keep walking for better food.

Yelp
fun concept, slow service, cold staff... except for one fellow who was unfortunately transferring off his shift. the food is nothing more than what's in your kitchen fridge. eggs, toast, breakfast meat. some other stuff i guess...but this is a review coming from a vegetarian. the raisin toast was good (?!). i can't understand why our food took so long when we were the only table waiting for food and the menu and what we ordered was so simple. anyhow, it's cramped (duh it's a dining cart). the regulars here are assholes and the staff might need a raise.

Yelp
It seems like every big city has its own greasy spoon destinations that are beloved by the locals and visitors alike. In Saint Paul the crown goes to Mickey's Diner which stands out like a sore thumb (in a good way) on the corner of 7th and St. Peter in downtown. This street car diner opened in 1939 and has been in continuous operation ever since. It's such a fixture in the Twin Cities that it was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It's also appeared in numerous television shows, films, and music videos! The prefabricated street car is open 24 hours and offers breakfast all day, naturally! We stopped in around 10:00am and were surprisingly able to snag a freshly vacated booth toward the back. Be warned though, the rarely available booths have a sign above them that notifies you of their 30 minute limit and "more than two persons in a booth" rule! Otherwise you better expect to take a seat at the old-fashioned counter! The menu has all the Americana diner favorites with most emphasis put on the breakfast options. They even have early bird sales on certain dishes! After only a few minutes to check out the menu, our no muss, no fuss waitress quickly took our orders before hurrying back to the bustling counter. I'd heard their pancakes are great so I went with The Two's (2 pancakes, 2 sausage, 2 eggs with cheese). In keeping with the fast paced feel, our orders came out hot from the small kitchen in just a few minutes. The pancakes were great but we all couldn't help but laugh at the eggs "with cheese" that came out with a single square of what can only be described as a Kraft single flopped on top. Even though the sides were largely overlooked, the pancakes alone were worth the trip, along with the Belgian waffle I was lucky enough to have a bite of. If nothing more the history of the eatery has a pull of its own!

Yelp
Wow, what a cute little restaurant. It looks kinda like a car, parked on the side of the street, apparently this place was in a movie (can't remember the name). Any way we came in on a Saturday morning per recommendations from our hotel concierge, and the whole experience was great. The place is pretty small.. probably holds like 30-40 pole at most, if you come alone you're required to sit at the bar, but if you have a party of 2 or more you're welcome to take one of the 4 booths, however everyone must order a minimum of $3 items. We went with their Mickey breakfast which came with your choice of bread, eggs, hash brown and your choice of meat. It was huge! But very satisfying. I loved the hash browns, the top was nice and crispy but the center was a little softer.. honestly tasted like mash potatoes. Each booth has a cute little jukebox and for 25 cents you can select a song of your choice. The service was great, and apparently we came at a good time because 20 minutes after arriving, there was a line of people waiting for seats.
