The Best Montreal Microbreweries and Craft Beer Bars | Eater Montreal

"Beer brewing is done with Gaspésien flair (their flagship brewery is located not far from the mighty Percé rock) at this bright Plateau pub. Expect lots of robust, hoppy flavours, and try their award-winning American Brown Ale if there’s any on hand." - Eater Staff

Google
Their beers are very good. The staff is very nice and welcoming. Got a flight of 5 beers. All of them were good. Will be back to try their other offerings. They have a very nice patio and great indoor seating. Very comfortable.

Google
Very happy to have come here! Delicious beer, attentive staff, fun atmosphere. Check it out when you are in the area.

Google
First time coming here over the summer. The vibe and atmosphere are great, staff are very attentive and they have a nice terrasse on the side. My only complaint is that the pintes themselves seemed rather small and no pitchers. Some of the imported beers are a little on the expensive side too.

A Nice E.

Google
I do not recommend this place. This establishment has some ungrateful servers who complain about not earning enough tips. It’s quite ridiculous for them to complain and confront us about a 10% tip for a quick beer. Mind you, we were only here for about 20 minutes and did not order any food. The server said we need to tip at least 15% at bars, but not at coffee shops. How does that make any sense when you are just pouring my beer from a tap but the coffee barista is handcrafting my drink?

Martin L.

Google
Great service, fantastic beers, and a chill ambiance. It's a little bit of Gaspésie in the heart of the city. The barrel aged beers are excellent, and interesting guest beers. They often have tap takeovers from other breweries. A bit pricey - pints are 9 bucks on average. Simple food menu, just snacks an charcuterie boards.

Google
I enjoyed all the house beers tried: Czech Pilsner, Red, and Imperial Stout. Comfortable bench seats. Liw-level music Allows for conversation. Small bar, high-tops and two-tops plus circular spots. Good for small groups. Subdued night lighting. Small sidewalk terrace. Friendly and attentive service.

Google
I thought it was a great place. Their porter and nitro stout were excellent. Bartender was very friendly and welcoming. Bathroom art was on point

Nioneol E.

Google
I got harassed because I tipped in $ instead of %. I left a $2 tip (my friends tipped $1.50 each, which was ~15% of their tabs). I actually paid more for the same service, yet the bartender still hassled me for 10 minutes for not tipping “15%.” ( the food was horrible btw ). I’m a student, not making a high income, and I also work in restaurants, so I get it. But telling me “don’t go out next time” over 50 cents of an optional tip? That’s just entitled. If I don’t come back, you’re losing my $20 tab + tip over nothing. This tip culture is going to far it makes no sense anymore…

Yelp
The ambiance! The exposed brick and wood is beautiful. The outdoor patio with string lights is adorable. The drinks and food were great. The corn dogs were the star! Very nice service :)

Yelp
Cool local brew pub with a number of local and guest taps. I got the 6 beer flight which ended up being quite bigger than I expected. I think each was 6 oz, fair warning. I'd recommend getting the 4 flight since the last beer got warm by the time I got to it. They have a nice variety of beers meeting the staples, blonde, ipa, heffeweizen, amber, Irish dry stout, etc. Nothing blew me away compared to the stuff I'm used to getting in San diego, but they were good beers.

Yelp
Caribou is in a great section of Mont Royal, just far enough but not too far from the hubbub, with very friendly staff, comfortable inside and outside seating (outside is nicer in the summer) and of course beer. During the warmer months, the focus primarily on fruity beers and IPAs, but they try to have a little bit of everything else as well. Most beers offer different pour sizes from 5oz. to 16oz. Flights of pours are available in 6oz. glasses. Other types of drinks and cocktails are also available as well as some food options (see the menu for details). It's a few blocks from the nearest Metro station, but well worth the walk of a few blocks.

Yelp
I love this place - beer, vibe, atmosphere, location - EVERYTHING. But I'd never had the food, so this review is all about the planchette we ordered. It's not everyday you can order a little tray of goodies in a bar and discover a kind of food you've never had before! Those mushroomy looking things are SEA WHELKS (bourgots) - a kind of sea snail. Ever so sea-salty and the texture is chewy like squid. Delicious. SMOKED SCALLOPS?! Divine texture and delicate sweet taste. The rillettes were incredible. So was the smoked salmon. A smear of butter or cream to put on the bread along with the smoked salmon is the only thing I would add to this dreaminess. The price was very good for such elegance, around $24.

Yelp
Bartender was super knowledgeable and nice suggesting pairings and entertaining us with small banter.

Yelp
Bartender was super friendly and gave us a great list of places to visit while in town. Over and above service and the beers were great!!

Yelp
I had a flight and I really liked all of the beers that I tried. I especially liked the Porter. Excellent service and I was lucky to be renting a place within walking distance. I wish they had some merchandise available to purchase but other than that no downside to my visit.

Yelp
Not too much of a beer drinker but the service and staff have always been nice and accommodating the few times I've been. There were some drinks that I did enjoy even though I don't normally drink beer (just can't remember the names!)

Yelp
This space has had several pretty good bars in it before Pit Caribou arrived. And having enjoyed several drinks in those places, I can say with some authority that Pit Caribou is even better than what came before. We have been here twice and really enjoyed the relaxed vibe here, and the beer is quite tasty as well. During the day the space has a lot of light and if you enjoy a drink during the daytime hours I highly recommend it. The downstairs bathrooms are nicely done and add to the experience. The last time we went, we sat on a raised platform at the back on two rocking chairs which was a high-class way to knock back several pints. The only draw back is that we used to live a couple blocks away - and now we live in a different city, so becoming regulars is harder to pull off.

Yelp
Pit Caribou is a fun place for a beer. The vibe is young and lively. The service is fast and friendly. I was here just for a quick drink to kill some time. I like what they offered and their line up of beers is solid. Love the different seating options. Great for groups, couple and even single at the bar! Worth visiting if you are in the area!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our evening! This was such a chill place for a drink. Service was pretty good. The server did his best to explain some of the menu items since my French is only so-so. Nice decor: retro industrial. Dim lighting, cool fixtures,... I liked the set up of the bathrooms. Plenty of beers on tap. Variety of alcoholic drinks that aren't beers. Lots of non-alcoholic choices for those who are deemed designated drivers. Although I didn't try the food, this place is definitely worth a return visit. I would love to sit in a booth/banquette next time!

Yelp
This place is great for a nice 4 à 7 or even a full (long) evening, the service is good and there are amazing beers!!! They have great little snacks that will well accompany your beers.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
My original review for Pit Caribou is from 2016 so I feel like it's definitely worthy of an update. Just in case you were wondering, this bar is still chill, chic, friendly and delicious! I was here recently in the late afternoon before an event and we were cozy in a big booth looking out the window, sipped small glasses of delicious Quebec beers, and enjoyed chatting with the bilingual, welcoming beer-smart bartender. Way to stay great Pit Caribou!

Yelp
Very nice brewery near Parc de la Fontaine. They only sell good beers, I've even went out of my go to white or blonde to try out darker ones and honestly I am never disappointed. They also serve snacks which work well after a couple drinks, atmosphere is warm and cozy. Service is always friendly. I used to go there a lot while living on the Plateau and will be back as soon as the snow is gone! Try it and let me know if you liked it too :) PS : if you like it too much and end up tipsy/drunk, just walk a few hundred feet to Ma Poule Mouillée if you like Portuguese grilled chicken or even to La Banquise if you want to turn yourself into a big ole Poutine

Yelp
Most of us would hardly find time to travel to Gaspésie and surroundings. Well if you are in Montreal you will get some taste of it in Pit Carribou. Delicious beers. I started with a flight of four of the Pit Caribou's classic brews. You have also an option for flight of the five classics and one special, but that was a little bit too much to drink on Sunday at 5pm. Then some of us exhibited interest towards the strawberry visiting beers from Le Naufrageur, A la bourdages won the competition with Strawberry Field in my view although it is a relatively strong one. Food wise it gets even better, simple menu offering some delicious options from the same region to snack on and two beautiful platters, one of them sea food based, which is kind of rare and nice. Friendly and attentive service. Overall comfortable pub that will make every beer lover happy.

Yelp
Great beer and cider. They have local products. I had the as à l'abri de la tempête corps mort and the Milton Cider. Both good.

Yelp
Service was great, sour beer was a first, and bread with fish spread was delish. The crowd for watching the World Cup was friendly too.
google avatar

Valérie P.

Yelp
Clearly one of my favourite bar in Montreal. They have a great selection of their own beers (regulars and seasonals) plus different lines of other gaspésie breweries. Lovely staff, lovely ambiance, sometimes they have a DJ on Saturday night. Otherwise music is good. Maybe not the best place for a cocktail fanatic, but they have a decent choice of Quebec liquors.
google avatar

Katerina B.

Yelp
Lovely service and a good place to have drinks with a group of friends. I like their beer selection and their prices are surprisingly low. I had a cider and it was one of the best ones I've tasted recently. Their bathroom is so cool, I like how they came up with funky decor ideas. It's definitely a nice local place so if you're in town, you may want to check it out.

Yelp
Came here with my boyfriend on a Thursday and it was pretty lively and provided a great vibe for a week day. We walked in and stood there for about 5 minutes waiting for someone to seat us. There were 5 people on staff, none of whom said hello or even made eye contact with us. We just sort of gave up and sat at the bar where we were continued to be ignored (seriously, we were laughing because of the ridiculous amount of time that was passing!). Finally we were acknowledged and ordered two blonde de l'anse. We came here excited and expecting to learn something new - about Gaspé, about the brews - but nothing was explained to us and the service was so unfriendly that we just quickly drank our beers and left. Their prices are reasonable - even cheap, but I was really disappointed in my overall experience.

Yelp
I read some of the 5 stars reviews and I guess I had a different experience. The good: Great location, a little load but cool atmosphere, loved the small booths, loved the toilet surprise (trust me you will go there you will understand) and the beer was also nice (Yes it is a microbrewery but doesnt mean they automatically make amazing beer. it was 4/5 I would say). The bad: Beer isnt cheap, if you go to Dieu de ciel or the new Si boire you get an amazing beer for less. The beer as I said is good but not amazing. and finally the food. They have almost no food (especially veggy options), when I asked about food and fries the guy told me there are a lot of places near by so I understood I can bring food there (like they do in other bars), well after bringing a poutine he told me I can eat it there...so annoying.. Bottom line, good beer and a nice atmosphere I guess I will come back if I am in the area but most chances I wont....

Yelp
Went there for Icelandic Invasion which brought in some guest beers. They were great and actually enjoyed them more then the house beers. Couldn't comment on the cost because I split before the bill came & left it for my brother to pay. Overall the place has a great set up and vibe. Fills up quick so get there early. Will be back.

Yelp
Big fan of this place! To start, I love the decor. They have an ocean/sea captain theme which I really dig. The darker colours make for a very warm environment, and I think it will feel very cozy in the winter. The lighting is a bit low at night, making the menu hard to read, but that contributes to the warm and fuzzy feeling of the place. The beer is quite tasty. My absolute favourite so far is the Robust Porter. It is a sweet, chocolatey porter served on nitro - one of the best of this style I have had! I also quite like the Witbier. Some of the special beers have been slightly underwhelming or not exactly what was expected, but it is perhaps typical that the classics are most on point. I haven't had any food items yet, but I am sure I will at some point and will report back!

Yelp
Good beer, comfortable layout. Beer isn't cheap and you get what they make. Luckily it's very tasty and there is a variety to choose from!

Yelp
Great bar. They opened a month and a half ago, and I have a feeling I'll be frequenting this fantastic establishment often. I came here for after dinner drinks with my family and got a chance to introduce them to Quebec beer from Gaspisie. The waitress was very kind and patiently explained some of the menu items since our French is not too too good. She was very knowledgeable and made excellent recomendations. My dad and I got Pit Caribou beer on tap (I had a nice and hoppy ale) and my mom and my partner got a couple of ciders. I tried my partner's cider, which was lemony and minty, and a lot of fun to drink. The place wasn't too packed, so it was nice and quiet, with cool music playing in the background. Great for conversation without any strains! Really, that's as good as it gets for me!

Belinda P.

Yelp
Great pub with microbrew and array of artisinal beers from Gaspe. The cheese and olive platters along with beer bread were a real treat
google avatar

Marine B.

Yelp
Cute place, with delicious microbrews and a super nice service (the waiters will bring you some water before you order anything, just because!). It's a bit loud, a bit dark, very friendly. And apparently if you like beers, it's the place to go. If you don't like beer however, life will be difficult for you (but it's your fault, since you don't like beer). There are some ciders, but all Quebec-style (= not at all as sugary as in the US) and no proper wine. I don't think cocktails are their specialty either. Drink beer or go thirsty!
google avatar

Ash L.

Yelp
It's like food & craft beer tour in the Gaspésie region except that doesn't take you 10 hour drive but 10 min BIXI! With a large sample of beer from the region paired with the best kind of snacks (seafood & cold meat) all locally sourced, this is my favorite neighbourhood bar at the moment, which I can also bring my out-of-town friends to impress.
google avatar

Kenny N.

Yelp
Here's my unusual experience with Pit Caribou beer - I received a bottle with a custom made label featuring my image as thanks for participating in a recent event called Montreal Swing Riot. It was stunning. Every single participant of this Crossover Battle received with their likeness. I transported it back to Colorado yesterday and finally sampled it. It was delicious. It was a gorgeous brown color with some caramel and malt tones. Really impressed with the beer and labeling. Cheers!

Yelp
Wow! First time there, but not the last. We got there for our usual Friday 5-7. We're always looking for a new place (Montreal has so much to offer). Very nice decor and friendly staff. We started off with some white beer, really great. Later on we completed with a plate of cheese and cold meat. This place is great. It has a decor that you don't find anywhere else in Montreal. Small and cozy, make sure you get there early... by 6pm you can hardly find a seat.

Guissoo N.

Yelp
We came upon this pub quite haphazardly. I have to say that this was some of the best house beers I've had. We even went to look for bottles to take home. The waiter was so nice and helpful. I can't wait to go back. Try the tasting. You can't go wrong.

S H.

Yelp
You know that feeling when you find out that one of your favourite microbreweries is opening a new pub in your neighbourhood, like, right across the street from where you live? Yeah, it's kinda like that. Pit Caribou has only been open for a few months, and already it's become a regular hangout. The tap list is fabulous, with Pit Caribou's regular and rotating seasonal selections often making way for tap takeovers and special events. (Iceland invasion, anyone?) They usually have a selection or two on cask, too. The nautical-style decor is fun and comfy. The pub is pretty much always crowded, with good reason, so come early if you want to get a table. The only thing I'd say is that I wish they had a bigger food menu, since after spending a few hours there I usually am hungry for something more substantial than the Gaspesie snacks that they have on offer. But for a 5-a-7, this is basically the perfect pub.

Yelp
Super beer and great food from eastern Quebec.

Louis P.

Yelp
Beer is almost an afterthought here. Incredible space and layout, extremely unique and comfortable.

Geoff K.

Yelp
I was in Montreal for four months in the plateau. If you want a place to just 'doyourthing' this bar is so welcoming most delicious beer

Devin R.

Yelp
Great place for a few drinks after a nice winter hike (or XC ski adventure). Highly recommend the apres 8 heures and kriek porter. Honey crisp sour was very unique as well. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended!
