10 Best Castles in Edinburgh | Condé Nast Traveler

"Midhope Castle on the grounds of Hopetoun House is the filming location used for Lallybroch— i.e. Jamie Fraser’s home—in Outlander . It dates back to 1458 (perhaps earlier) and although its exterior appears to be in good condition, the interior is derelict. Before you leave, pick up some local produce from the delightful farm shop, including meat raised on the estate’s own grounds." - Freya Herring

Midhope Castle, Queensferry, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom - Landmark Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Why is this place so notable? Midhope Castle is the filming location used for Lallybroch—AKA Jamie Fraser’s home—in the hugely popular Outlander show. It dates back to 1458 (perhaps earlier) and although its exterior appears to be in good condition, the interior is derelict. The castle sits on the grounds of Hopetoun House. Before you leave, pick up some local produce from the delightful farm shop, including meat raised on the estate’s own grounds. Wow. What’s the vibe among visitors? Nerdish curiosity. Go figure. Anything we should know about the logistics of visiting? There's no guide, but you have to obtain a pass from Hopetoun House to visit the castle, which is positioned on active farming land. And who are the usual visitors? Outlander fans as well as folks visiting Hopetoun House. So we've probably seen it on TV—how is it in real life? If you’ve seen the castle in Outlander, you’ll love seeing it for real. The fact that the interior is derelict is a bit disappointing—but, hey, that’s show business. Got it. So who will get the most out of it? If you haven’t seen this castle in Outlander, you might wonder why you’re here, not to mention paying a £10 parking fee. For the fans of the show, though, this is the ultimate experience." - Freya Herring

Incredible to go to ‘Lallybroch’! Online said we needed to pre book tickets but you don’t have to at all. It’s only £7. No inside just the outside but it’s beautiful! Little tricky getting to the castle due to tight roads! It’s close to Edinburgh and worth a little drive out the way to enjoy another castle!

I would recommend it to fans of Outlander, because to see the castle around, you have to buy the tickets otherwise you would just see it from behind. You cannot go inside the house. For Outlander fans, as I am, it has beautiful feeling and it is worth visit. You can also buy a key from Lallybroch or some other souvenirs.

As an outlander fan I can absolutely say that I wasn’t disappointed! It was the original Lallybroch right in front of me! Beautiful surroundings. The only thing unfortunately was that you could not go inside:( 7£ is a bit overpriced in my opinion but still worth it!!

Great place to visit if you're an Outlander fan. £7 to park and visit castle a bit steep considering you can be around the castle in 5 mins as you can't get inside. Lovely scenery with a good walk just the other side of the road from the carpark.

Beautiful building. It is a shell so do not expect to be able to go inside. You can get a nice picture of the arch and the stairs to the front door!
