Midnight Animal Coffee Shop Pulls into National City | Eater San Diego

"Bringing the tradition of motorcycles and coffee together in the South Bay, I see Midnight Animal is now pouring in National City, offering a straightforward menu of espresso-based and drip coffee drinks made with the shop’s own medium blend, roasted in-house on a vintage Diedrich IR12. Its specialty menu features Mexican-inspired beverages — the tres leches latte, café de olla, and a Mexican mocha made with traditional Chocolate Abuelita — and a canned cold brew is reportedly in the works. Paying homage to classic Italian motorcycle culture, the interior is outfitted with vintage bike diagrams and mid-century modern furniture, with additional seating beyond the back door. Much like James Coffee Co.’s setup in Little Italy, the roastery-cafe shares its industrial space with other businesses, including DDIY Garage (which customizes Ducati motorcycles), renowned shaper McCallum Surfboards, an appointment-only barber, and BRNT Co.; proprietor Christian Ardel says more tenants are expected to join. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday." - Mario A. Cortez

Yum 😋 Highly recommend for anyone looking for that motorcycle vibe type of coffee shop. Never been in and will be back again on my bike! Super good!

I decided to check this place out, and wow was I amazed on how good this coffee was, I like trying out new places for coffee. This one I recommend. Good coffee bold flavor, the place looks very relaxing as well can definitely enjoy the coffee here or in the go. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I had the Mexican mocha and it was very delicious m. Thank you

Google
Cool spot, the best tres leches latte and excellent service. Everyone must come, perioooood!

Ruth S.

Google
Excellent espresso drink (flat white), perfectly frothed milk, temp, espresso shots. So tasty! Not much space inside, but I am usually taking out, so no big deal.

Vivienne M.

Google
Great place to have coffee. Delicious coffee flavor. Incredibly as well this place has lactose free milk. ln all my travels around the US, I have never been ae.to get that at any cafè. I've always had to make do with some alternative milk I don't like. Very friendly and helpful server/batista. Overall pleasant experience.

Google
Great addition to the neighborhood! Friendly service and even better quality drinks. Small space but they do have indoor seating and wifi if you find yourself needing to work on your laptop and it’s not as crowded (yet) as the other coffee shops in the area.

Audrianna C.

Google
This place has the best Mexican Mocha and iced mocha. Their coffee is so smooth and rich, the drinks are perfect everytime. Everyone here is always so nice and even the other customers in there are friendly. Great addition to the neighborhood:)

Yelp
Coffee: Pretty good! Anything from a simple iced/hot coffee to non-standard lattes. Seats: A couple individual seats. Viable to chill inside, but feels more catered for to-go orders and solo travelers. Service: The barista was cool and expeditious with our order. Military discount offered. Parking: Tiny shared lot. Likely will be packed unless you get lucky, recommend street parking around the corner. Vibe: Fits right in to the North Park vibes.

Yelp
Got the M.A. (Midnight Animal) Tonic with ginger syrup and it was delicious! You can taste the espresso even with the syrup. And it wasn't acidic! Staff was friendly and helpful. Decent amount of seating. Parking lot is small. Would come back for the M.A. Tonic with a different syrup.

Yelp
Match Latte with the sugar and spice was amazing! This matcha tasted like the milk from Cinnamon Toast Crunch and was served at the correct temperature. The barista was so kind and made me feel so valued. I definitely recommend you come visit for the coffee and Matcha. 5 stars

Yelp
I was in the area and stopped by to try a coffee. I ordered the pumpkin spice because I didn't see many other options on the menu, flavor wise. It was a very simple menu, and I like to try new flavors. It was pretty tasty but not my favorite. It's a very aesthetic place, the owners did a good job with the decor.

Yelp
NEW LOCAL COFFEE SHOP IN NORTH PARK! Do not miss this one! The coffee is smooth and the tres leches latte has a subtle flavor that isn't too sweet or overpowering. Extremely tasty and not overpriced like some of the nearby coffee shops. I paid $7 for a regular tres leches latte with oat milk and an added shot (4 shots total -- pro tip: it's the same price to add 1 and 2 shots so why not go big?) The barista was really chill and friendly and we got our drinks super fast! Small shop but they were playing good music and have some pretty rad merch. Would definitely check this place out!

Yelp
Midnight Animal Coffee has been on my list for a while now and I finally got the chance to come try them out! Sadly they didn't have the non dairy cold foam that you can top on different drinks. And they came out with new seasonal flavors. That I personally like, but I know they weren't for my family. The space was good! You could fit probably +16 people in this space. Near the end of the espresso bar against the newspaper wall, there's a table for 2! Even in-front there was seating. The parking lot is shared, but the time we went there was lots of parking. As well as street parking. The worker was really kind and chill! The prices did go slightly up as mentioned on their Instagram post. To compare flavors to 7 Seas Iced Brown Sugar Rosemary Latte, I happily ordered Midnight Animal's seasonal special: Iced Rosemary Latte. It's a house made syrup of organic brown sugar and rosemary. This flavor is perfect for spring! I loved that there was more of a Rosemary oomph! The coffee was strong and had the perfect milk ratio. My brother had the ~$6.50 Iced Lavender Vanilla with Oat Milk. He enjoyed it and as a lavender lover it had a unique taste to it. This was a different kind of lavender that I'm used to. Overall, I had an enjoyable time here and I love their theme of motorcycles and coffee. Too bad it's a small lot because having a cars n coffee here would be so cool! They also have coffee beans, honey, tea, T Shirts, & long sleeves. A nice spot to stop for Coffee.

Yelp
Walked in on a quiet afternoon. Luckily there was a parking spot open, which is a win in that smaller lot. The man working was very friendly and open to questions. They have housemade syrups, which is always a bonus in my book. Makes flavored drinks so much better than Torani or something like that. And they have unique flavors too like tres leches and cafe de olla in addition to more traditional ones. I ordered a latte with the cafe de olla. It was really good. The syrup added the perfect amount of flavor without being too sweet or drowning the taste of the espresso. They don't charge exta for alternative milks anymore, which is much appreciated! I will definitely return. It's not super close to me, but when in North Park, it's definitely worth a visit. Love the theme as well!

Yelp
Really great coffee with a really cool space and chill vibes. The place itself is not huge and it's located in a smaller strip mall in the Northpark area. The person helping us was really friendly. Oh, there's also really cool Ducati sitting in the store lol. The strip mall is small so parking could be be a little challenging. But I was able to find parking about two blocks away, which was great since I was visiting a few spots in the area. It truly is a walkable area so finding parking this particular space is not a huge deal.

Yelp
Was excited to visit this location. The name sounded enticing. The location seemed ideal. But the place and the coffee fell a little flat. Everything just was mediocre here unfortunately. Place could seat maybe 8 people inside and about 6ish people outside. It's a small place that is motorcycle themed. Theres a motorcycle inside. There are newspaper clippings of it inside on the wall near the merch and (maybe just on this day) the barista gave "bad boy" vibes. The menu is pretty straightforward. There are seasonals. Today they offered a matcha tres leche and a rosemary latte. They also offer cortado, americanos etc. they have regular drip as well and you can add different syrups to the coffee. I ordered the two seasons. The tres leche with oat milks cold and the rosemary hot with whole milk. The rosemary won. The matcha tasted more like matcha than tres leche and so the flavor profile wasn't really there. The rosemary sorta won by default. Both were okay. The barista was doing it all. He was chill. They also sell merchandise, oatmeal, and coffee ground. Parking was tough. It has a small lot. I had to find parking on the street.

Ginger P.

Yelp
It's a small cafe, but still has a couple of seats if you want to hang out and chat. It's not too crowded the two times I've been, and the seats are actually more comfortable than they look. I've had the tres leches cafe both iced and hot, and I like this latte quite a bit. I am more sensitive to caffeine than the average person, and I found this coffee to be quite strong. The barista was friendly to everyone and had great vibes.
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop. I went with a friend who ordered the tres leches matcha. I had the tres leches latte with oat milk. It was so good!! Not overly sweet and I could still taste the coffee which sometimes is a miss with lattes at other coffee places. I love the edgy decor and the service was good. I will definitely return and I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Really love this place. Staff is really nice and attentive especially Joseline. Lots of options for drinks and in a great location.

Yelp
Glad i decided to try this spot again and the tres leches was on point. The barista suggested I add cinnamon and I loved the addition.

Yelp
Midnight Animal Coffee is right near my sister's apartment (which she quickly became a regular at), so we swung by for a drink before heading out to the San Diego Zoo. The barista behind the counter even knew my sister plus her order when we walked in. She was super sweet to our 1 year old who is very much in her stranger-danger and shake-my-head-no era. My sister loves sugar and spice latter with extra syrup (she loves sweet drinks). I enjoyed the tres leche latte I ordered (not too sweet at all) and my partner ordered a cappuccino. We liked the drinks and enjoyed hanging out inside while we waited. We'd order coffee from here again!

Yelp
Cute, open spaced coffee shop in a small business corner. Stopped in to try their seasonal flavors and ordered a matcha tres leches and Irish cream. The tres leches was a little hard to discern the flavor over the matcha, but it was still very good. The Irish cream was probably our favorite though. Would def stop on to see what other seasonal options come up over the year.

Yelp
This place was a okay. Staff was friendly. Seemed like they have lots of regulars as many people came in and the barista already knew their order. They were busy! Parking - tiny tiny parking lot that was completely full. Really hard to get out of this lot as it's one way in and out. Very little street parking. You will definitely be walking a few blocks. They are pet friendly and even have treats for dogs. Tried: Strawberry Matcha - it was okay. Needed a bit more matcha, too milky. The strawberry was very faint. Pumpkin spice - a little too sweet but good flavor. The prices are on point! I would recommend this shop for coffee as their drinks are less than $6 each. The only reason I won't be back is due to parking.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop. I appreciate Midnight Animal's attention to detail when it comes to their coffee. They use higher quality syrup, nicely foam their milk, roast their own beans, and answer any questions you may have about their drinks. I got the Tres Leches Latte half sweetened during my last visit and enjoyed it. There's usually only one person taking orders and making drinks, so be patient.
google avatar

Emma J.

Yelp
I walk with my son to Midnight Animal a few times a week since we live just down the street. The staff have learned our names and are so friendly and sweet. They always take the time to interact with my baby and ask me how I'm doing (and actually want to know!) Being freshly postpartum, this makes me feel really special and not so isolated. Their coffee is the best in San Diego. I could drink their velvety, not too sweet lavender vanilla latte every day of my life, but sometimes I am feeling like something different and Maddie always manages to read my mind and just know exactly what I need. I've never had a bad coffee here. This place and these people have been such a blessing and I just love coming here!
google avatar

Yelp
The interior is soo aesthetic and has a dark appeal to it, there is some seating along the side with small tables Miguel is very kind and you can tell he gets to know his regulars well! I ordered the tees leche latte with oatmilk and it was soo yummy The coffee flavor was rich and the oatmilk really added a creaminess I loved, will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
The staff here is always amazing! I love the recommendations! So far so good! I ordered a hot chai latte with almond milk and hot tres leche latte. Last I ordered their special with this cold foam. And that was super tasty! I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Midnight Animal Coffee has quickly become one of my favorite shops in San Diego. As soon as you walk in, the baristas greet you, and I appreciate that they often know my drink order before I even pay. This shows they genuinely care about their customers. The service is quick, friendly, and helpful. There is indoor seating to catch up with friends or study/work. I usually order the flat white or the iced Tres Leches (quad shot) when I'm craving something sweet. The prices are fair and standard for today's market. Parking can be challenging, but overall, I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Helen D.

Yelp
Quality of their coffee was on point. I had an oat milk latte and it was perfectly smooth. There isnt a lot of seating here so keep that in mind when you choose to come here!
google avatar

Yelp
I went in today while waiting for my order at The Wise Ox. I asked for an ice coffee. They didn't have any. The guy working offered me to try the cold brew; I didn't like that so he suggested an iced americano. It was terrible. I said this isn't working for me and threw it away. He didn't offer me a refund or a replacement while I just sat there waiting for my order. I then said well can I just get a drip coffe, he said "Do you mind waiting?" I said no, clearly frustrated. Nothing was offered so I left with no coffee and less money. Too bad because I like the motorcycle theme and the guy working the counter seemed nice but he completely missed the mark on the customer service by not offering me something else or a refund. Bummer.

Yelp
COFFEE FOR CHAMPIONS (5 stars) - DRINK: yums - PRICE: afforable - SERVICE: excellent - AMBIANCE: modern Good coffee with "affordable" prices! Clever name for a coffee shop. This place is my kind of spot. It's a place for coffee lovers and motorcycle loves - that I be both!!! Quite exciting to see the passion of coffee and motorcycles in one small space. I am a two wheel enthusiast with an accident that nearly killed me and alot of injuries and scars to prove it. :: ORDER :: HOT VANILLA (DECAF) LATTE ($5.50) - I am team decaf! Their decaf beans are from Columbia (different region from their regular espresso beans). The decaf beans are NOT SWP but rather ethyl acetate (which i learned from the barista is best way of decaffing when using chemicals). At first I couldn't tell if it was a medium or dark roast but after chatting with the barista we both felt it was more medium. In their decaf beans, I personally couldn't find any fruity notes in the profile of the bean nor did I find a deep rich profile either and leaned to medium. Many decaf beans I've enjoyed sipping usually have a chocolatey nutty profile although I didn't taste any fruity or acidity or boldness in these beans, I was searching for that chocolatey nutty and found a round smooth light body taste which I very much enjoyed on every sip. And they use their own house made syrups - love a place that makes their own. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIBISCUS BERRY ICED TEA ($5) - love me some berry ice tea. It's not sweetened but you can ask for it to be sweetened with simple syrup. Barista made this perfect, not too sweet but sweet enough where you can still taste the berry and a little tart. HIGHLY RECOMMEND :: SERVICE :: Excellent! There wasn't anyone when I came in. Super surprised by that, more people should be be here! The barista was well knowledge of their roasted beans - she knew exactly what my asks were. I appreciate baristas like that! There is a dog employee too! Haha so cute, she just people/customer watch. I also love that. My drink came out quickly and well executed with nice foam art. :: AMBIANCE :: Modern coffee shop. Areas to sit and sip but no tables to setup your laptop and office (I'm also ok with that) because sometimes customers like me just want to sit and sip but can't because tables are occupied by people working/studying for hours. This is not a place for that.. tables are small. Good place for sit and sip! I think I need to add this to my regular places of visit. The experience did not disappoint. Until the next sip...

Yelp
Midnight animal is one of my top choices for local coffee shops. Service is friendly and quick, especially for the mornings I'm rushing to work. I love the tres leche iced coffee! It's the perfect amount of sweetness and fun twist to an iced coffee. Parking can be hard in north park but There are 2 x 15 min spots in front of the store that make it easy to pop in
google avatar

Janee' S.

Yelp
The employee here for this location was extremely helpful and nice. She gave great recommendations and I ended up going with Tres Leche latte with oat milk. Very good and I would definitely come back. The inside is very nice but it's small. Parking is tight so I would suggest to street park!
google avatar

Maryan O.

Yelp
After months of wanting to stop by, I finally went here. Let me just say: the tres leches latte, half sweetened, iced? Incredible. So delicious and I will definitely be coming back for it in the future. This spot is clearly a popular spot - it was very busy in the quick stop I made. The barista was kind and the service was great even through a busy rush. Check out this nice coffee spot if you get the chance.
google avatar

Ashlyn T.

Yelp
It's a small coffee shop but very comfy inside! The parking lot is very small but I can usually find street parking. I loved the tres leches iced latte. It wasn't too sweet but had good flavor!
google avatar

Liiban O.

Yelp
Great simple shop, the barista that helped us was a bit quirky which was cool. You can tell her enjoys what coffee and what he does. We ordered three drinks: hot chai, hibiscus iced tea, and an iced vanilla latte w/ extra ice. All three drinks were great, not overly sweet and the vanilla latte actually tasted like coffee.
google avatar

Jack C.

Yelp
Great coffee, really cool environment, and fast service. They do have WiFi, but not a great place to work from because they only have benches. Parking is terrible, but there's plenty around if you have time to walk.
google avatar

Roman D.

Yelp
I went with the family today and I 100% recommend Midnight Animal. The coffee was great. Had the Honey almond latte and it was really good. Miguel was awesome! He was very nice and very informative on future coffee recomendations. The ambiance was layed back and relaxed how it should be.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
This where the cool cats of North Park come to hang out. It's a very cool down to earth coffee shop. I had an iced matcha latte with whole milk and touch of honey. You can also go with vanilla syrup or no sweetener at all. The young lady who made the matcha latter was very nice and had a positive energy about her. She did a very good job with the matcha latte. I liked it because it offered that very good matcha flavor up front and smooth easy finish via the honey and milk. Nicely done. The place offers inside and outside seating, and dubs as a motorcycle aficionado spot. It's a very cool place. You can't miss the Ducati as you walk in.
google avatar

Ayshia V.

Yelp
- [ ] Motorcycle, dark, chill vibes - [ ] Super nice staff, good prices!! - [ ] Not a lot of charging area, but plenty of seats - [ ] Pumpkin spice latte not too sweet and definitely tasty!
google avatar

Yelp
Aqua man is the best barista to exist. The ambiance is amazing. COFFEE FOR CHAMPIONS
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
Friendly (which is rare for North Park) artisanal coffee shop tucked in by Wise Ox and the Empanada place. Note that there is NOT space to work/study at. (There are stools and tiny tables to sit at) My favorite thing so far would have to be the cold brew! I tasted notes that blew my mind! Iced latte was good too, flat white was a bit of a miss. I like how the prices are more reasonable compared to some other shops in the area. ($4 - $5 range) It's also very clean and minimal, with a cool futuristic motorbike aesthetic, but I wouldn't spend an exorbitant amount of time here.
google avatar

Brenda G.

Yelp
I had a latte with their house syrup de la olla. I asked for it half sweet and it had the perfect amount of sweetness without overpowering the coffee taste. Will be back
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
This is a cool little shop that is next to a butcher shop and an empanada place. The owners are a brother - sister duo that has taken their love and passion of brewing coffee and have turned it into a business. Even though they are a newer coffee shop, they have built a community that connects dog lovers and motorcycle enthusiasts. Midnight Animal Coffee is a chill shop that is all about bringing people together and centering them around coffee. You can tell that the team knows their craft with coffee and even though their menu isn't too big, the products they have are special and have a unique taste. I had an event there for a photography meet and there were a lot of nooks in this coffee shop that were so cool to take pics - like the motorcycle out in front and the cool bathroom inside. The shop is located in a strip mall and there is a parking lot with free parking, but since it is shared with other businesses around the area - the lot gets full pretty fast. You may have to park along the streets of North Park, but it's not too far of a walk. If you're looking for a place to chill, this is definitely a cool place to visit!
google avatar

Lina P.

Yelp
I stopped by this location on what was their soft opening day. I can't recall what used to be here but it's located in the small shopping center near the Empanandas and Butcher shop I believe. It's on El Cajon Blvd and luckily has a parking lot. In case the lot is full, there is usually street parking around. It's a small simplistic coffeeshop which I like. I LOVE the minimalistic vibes in there. The tiny little tables are so cute, perfect for a coffee date and does not take up so much room. I believe they sell merchandise if you walk further in the coffeeshop but I came to just grab a drink and go. I met one of the owners, Cassidy, who was super sweet. I always want to try something new and let her pick the drink of choice for me which was the Mexican Mocha. That was delicious. It was the perfect amount of sweetness, spice, and coffee flavor. It was a smooth drink. Might be one of my favorite coffees I've drank. I will definitely be back to try the Lavender-Vanilla (Iove lavender anything) and the Tres Leches.
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
Omg such good coffee and the cute bearded barista was so nice. Lol I might comeback just for him
google avatar

Haylee M.

Yelp
I would never have found this place. If not for my friend recommending it. Definitely a good call on her part. I think she found it because she is very into coffee. Really loved the aesthetic of the place. They've got a motorbike vibe with an actual Ducati bike inside as well! Random biking jacket on the ground somewhere and a wall of newspaper or magazine articles related to motorbikes. Very cutesy open set up. Barista was really nice as well! I had to ask her for an extra pump of sugar free vanilla after getting my order and she happily added it in and even mixed it up more for me. Got a custom order: cold brew + two pumps tres leches syrup + one pump sugar free vanilla + splash of half and half + Splenda packet. Tres leches flavor came out just right. And perfect balance of sweetness with the coffee going on. Not too much ice either, So there was a very generous amount of coffee in there. A lot of places just load up the cup with ice and you barely have any drink, but not here. Friend got an iced lavender latte. I tasted it and it was lovely. I'm not usually a lavender person but the flavor here was just the right amount. Subtle but so good.
google avatar

Jean G.

Yelp
Iced oat latte w one pump of lavender had a great balance all around. Just what I needed this morning! Got mine to go today but will be back to vibe out in the chill intimate space and try an empanada or two next door!

Yelp
I was picking up some food saw this store and went on yelp to see what it was because the name doesn't connect for me. When I saw that it was coffee, ok now we are talking my language so I was free this Sunday morning and decided to stop by and grab a cup. The store has a real minimalist type of vibe there's a Ducati that obviously is the conversation piece and a wall in the back that is made of what looks to be newspaper clippings, but for the most part quite simple. Menu isn't heavy with fraps and scraps and delly daps, they have a couple of signature drinks but I think they want the coffee to speak for itself. I got the tres leches and it was sweet without overpowering the coffee taste that and I enjoyed it thoroughly, a good no thrills coffee joint.

Denise C.

Yelp
I ordered the tres leches coffee with oat milk. Very delicious! Really good price. The barista was friendly and it was ready in no time.

Arianna Nicole C.

Yelp
Stopped in really quick since I was craving a matcha - was a little disappointed :( I ordered the Tres Leches Matcha and it just tasted like milk - yummy, sweet milk, but zero matcha flavor. You can tell by the color. The girl at the counter was super nice and sweet and I loved the ambiance. Maybe I'll come back for a regular latte one day.
google avatar

Jacob F.

Yelp
Came here while in town for the eeekend and loved the vibe. The service and food was good.
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
A simple coffee shop with unique flavors and an interest of motorcycles as the decor. Upon walking in, there is lots of space to stand and a couple of shelf like tables that could probably fit the size of a laptop. While there are tables, I do see this cafe as more of a takeout option. They have colorful selection of teas and I opted for one of their seasonal specials which was a Tiramisu latte. It was light and the tiramisu flavor was subtle but just enough. I also tried their espresso tonic with blood orange which looked so cool with this ombre effect when layering the espresso. Shout out to the barista for recommending it! Their coffee is tasty and I would definitely prefer going here for a quick coffee pick up!
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
Cute interior They have merch Tres leches Capp Vanilla latte Drip coffee is smooth Friendly baristas Parking could be a challenge, but it's worth it :)
google avatar

Yelp
Good little coffee spot located in El Cajon Blvd. Parking is sometimes a struggle during peak hours. Recommend parking by the park and walking over. Got the tiramisu iced coffee and it was good. The baristas are really friendly and overall a great atmosphere.
