The Best Sports Bars in Houston - Eater Houston

"Is this the bar from Cheers? No, but this Midtown pub has the same homey feeling as the beloved TV show bar. With an internet jukebox, darts, over 20 TVs, and themed nights with karaoke and bingo, there’s simply no way you won’t be entertained. Its daily happy hour runs weekdays and starts when the bar opens at 11 a.m. Food highlights include breakfast tacos, burgers, and its mango-glazed salmon." - Sean Hekmat

This bar has a cool vibe and a great staff. It's a Good place to go with friends for a drink and good bar food. Lots of big TVs for the games of the day and the chicken wings are nice and crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The sauce and flavor on the Buffalo(not spicy and no flavor) and lemon pepper wings were good, but the spicy dry rub was the best. Wing day is Thursday I recommend you try it.

Nice little local pub. Good vibe, nice service, not to expensive. I’m here right now. Joe Joe and Jason are taking very good care of me. Nice people.I Had the BYO Burger.? Red onions, lettuce served on the side, just right. It’s close to the Gray street, Greyhound station if you want to wait for a bus. The station can get a little sporty after the sun goes down. Foods what you’d expect. Not to expensive. I always appreciate clean bathrooms. They don’t have to be fancy but clean.

Google
Friendly attentive staff. New to the area, they adopted me right in. Its like Cheers, everyone knows your name! Food is great, I haven't tried anything I don't recommend. They just had a makeover and have some new dishes and drinks. Try the Triple Play, its my new favorite! Definitely stop in, look for Robbie. If you play the right song he will come sing with you!

Google
This Place Used To Be Good. Not Sure What Happened. When I Went There Was Barely Anybody There And The Server Still Rarely Came To Us. She Was On Her Phone And Not Caring About Service. The Quality Of The Food Has Declined. My Friend Got A Burger And They Put 2 Thinly Made Patties To Make It The Size Of A Big One. No , A Double Cheese Burger Was Not Requested. It Was Just Lousy. And I Usually Get The Wings And They’re Great , But This Time They Were Far From It.

Google
A true hidden gem in the middle of htown. The squad made me feel like a regular the second I stepped inside. The wings were piping hot with flavor and service was super attentive. With every game on the TVs - this will definitely be a frequent hangout for us. The exceptional depth to their bar top is inviting and very comfortable for a quick (or extended) visit. Can’t wait for some of their crawfish in a couple months. Will definitely be back.

I've been a patron of this establishment for at least 6 or 7 years now. The owner is sweet, smart, and incredibly polite. Employees have all been there for 5+ years, typically closer to 10. Always, always, get amazing service, and delicious food when I attend. Sad that I no longer live in Houston. I haven't found another place that has more delicious wings than them, SERIOUSLY!! Took my husband's grandmother there to try their wings, and she was instantly HOOKED! She absolutely had to have them for her huge 80th birthday bash! If you happen to make it to 80, you truly should be able to have anything your heart desires. Those wings were a HUGE, HUGE hit! Their Greek salad with shrimp, and chicken fried steak should both be on your MUST TRY list. I'm telling ya, this place is a real gem, and I really miss it.

Google
First time and I’m disappointed because I asked for bbq sauce on the burger no sauce. I said no cheese over and over again, there’s cheese. The meat has no flavor. My condiments are on the side instead of on the burger. Idk what I’m paying for at this point.

Google
If you like bacon, order the BLT and ask for extra bacon. When you get it you won't even be able to see the lettuce or tomato, and damn is it good! Almost 1.5 inches of bacon 🥓 😋😋😋

Yelp
I came here to watch a basketball game one evening with friends and had a great time. They have a good selection of food and drinks, and the staff was kind and attentive without being overbearing.

Yelp
Coaches Pub is where we ended up ringing in the new year and it was such a great choice. They weren't overly crowded and I liked the feel of the sports bar vibes. They have plenty of sitting at the bar, tables, and booths. We chose to sit in a booth and we were attended to quickly. I can appreciate that they had both servers and bartenders and were properly staffed. The employees all seemed to work together smoothly. We ordered drinks from the bar and then ordered food with our server. So glad the The kitchen was open so we ordered some wings and chicken nachos. The wings were decent. We got lemon pepper and bbq. The nachos were just okay. There wasn't enough toppings on them to have something with all the chips. Karaoke was in full swing and I love a bar that had karaoke and the dj was just as entering as those that sang. We got complimentary champagne at midnight to ring in the new year. We made friends with a table near us and it was just a good time all around.

Yelp
This place is not accessible to wheelchairs and they put no effort into making it so. Don't support this place if you care about making places accessible to all.

Yelp
Local bar and grill in midtown located in small shopping center is quaint with easy parking. Great food selections at reasonable prices. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. The fried pickles are fabulous. Try an assortment of appetizers including potato skins, egg rolls and nachos among others.

Yelp
Coaches is like my hometown sports bar with good food and great service- they always have all the games playing and good drinks- close to downtown and if you want a place to play darts and eat and just neighborhood love come to this location

Yelp
Fun nice friendly place. Great vibes and very good pub food. Had a great time here. Go and enjoy on your own and discover

Yelp
Update: I requested a tow hearing and the judge sided with me. The judge ordered the tow company to pay me as there was no probable cause for the tow. They never did pay and so now I am filing a complaint with the licensing board in Texas. The tow company is being investigated. This is unreal. It reeks of shadiness. If your car is towed request a tow hearing and file a complaint at https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/Complaints/ If enough of us complain maybe this will stop. Be sure to request the hearing and file the complaint.

Yelp
We were here for an alumni party for the National Athletic Trainer Convention. Our service from the daytime bar keep was phenomenal. He did a marvelous job. We asked him multiple questions about Houston living and he answered all of our questions! He was very pleasant and we had great conversation. He really should be commended! This place is a must return if in the area again. Also found out it was a Kansas Jayhawk Alumni bar in Houston! That's awesome - Rock Chalk! The beers were cold and service was top notch. Thank you for the hospitality! Respectfully, Bryan OKC

Yelp
I was here the last weekend that outside was open, lol. Originally, the plan was to go to another nearby place for crawfish, but they were not selling crawfish on this particular day. Therefore, Coaches was the alternative. Although this was my first time visiting Coaches, it didn't appear to be as packed as I would have thought. During this time, social distancing had just started to be suggested so I believe that affected the crowd. They have daily happy hour and daily specials which last all day, therefore, drink specials at any given time. Bartenders and the manager were pretty attentive and engaged in conversation. The crawfish were actually really good and had great flavor. There were a few people ordering wings which looked pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to come, but I'd return again if I was in the area.

Yelp
The first time I came here was over a decade ago, and it felt like I walked into a neighborhood dive bar. On more recent visits, it's clear that they went out of their way to improve the place across the board. Refreshed paint jobs, restored booths, new bar seats, etc. It was like I walked into a completely different bar. Despite it's location in Midtown, the place is never as packed as some of the alternatives just south, making it an ideal place to grab drinks without having to fight a crowd. The menu is about what you'd expect from a pub, plus a few nice touches like breakfast tacos. Prices are reasonable on both food and drinks, so you won't break the bank here. There are quite a few large screen televisions scattered throughout the venue, so no matter where you're sitting, you won't have any trouble catching the game. The bar area gets crowded, so I recommend sitting on the (generally empty) opposite side and waiting for the waitress to come by. It takes a lot longer to get served, but you won't be cramped.

Yelp
I've seen this place over the years. Finally stopped in for their Thursday $.65 wings. I ordered the 20 count half hot and half naked. Blue cheese dip. Ordered a small Greek salad. The wings were good. The salad was ok. It was drenched in too much dressing. The staff and atmosphere was very nice. I enjoyed this spot. Tv screens all over for non stop sports. It's a pub. It is what you would expect. After work during lunch this is a good spot to come and chill out for a bit. I'll be back.

Tiler D.

Yelp
As a bar tender who has worked in sports bars and dive bars and clubs I will say this was the most unwelcoming bar I've ever walked into. Walked in was very aggressively greeted by the bartender, with no form of welcoming attitude. Sat at the bar was asked "what can I get you?", i explained to him that I've never been there he said, "OK" and walked away. So I sat there for almost 3 minutes. With nothing in front of me wondering how I was going to know what they had to eat there if there was no menu given to me or any type of recommendation. I wasn't informed that the menu was on the caddy four seats away from me at the bar top. So I got up got myself a menu. Set back down and waited another five minutes to never be greeted or talk to you at all while he had his leg hiked up on the ice Well talking to his buddies. Terrible service, terrible attitude, not friendly at all. Do not recommend

Yelp
I came in after my nail appointment next door because it was pouring rain and I had walked from my building. So I figured I'll grab a drink till the rain clears. But the bartender was so rude and said she doesn't wanna serve me. My Id had expired 4 days ago...So I left and walked in the rain and was very upset about how I was treated because that doesn't change the fact that I'm 30 years old and my government is still considered valid not to mention November 6th isn't that long ago. I live a block away and the bartender treated me like I was one of the homeless or something.

Yelp
If it's sports I want, find me at Coaches Pub. During the World Cup Final, when each "trendy" bar in town had lines out the door, it was at Coaches where we snagged a few seats, cold beers, prompt table service and TVs GALORE. A giant projection screen along with walls covered in flat screens. How many, you ask? Let's just say that I turned a bit cross-eyed deciphering in which direction to look. Same goes for watching this last weekends heartbreaking Texas v. OU game. Fortunately, I drowned my sorrows in some cheese fries. A daily happy hour runs daily 11am-7pm; they've got great bar bites - and not just cheese sticks and wings. You'll find steaks, salads, blackened fish, chicken and mo'. And ladies (and gents), Saturday and Sunday, you can sip on $1.50 mimosas and $4 Zing Zang Bloody Marys. Football and Champagne, I'll say cheers to that!

Nomadic T.

Yelp
Chill spot in Midtown. Been twice, worth adding to the bar rotation. Wings are great, prices reasonable unlike say Little Woodrow's with their Manhattan pricing.

Kevin B.

Yelp
Been going to coaches for two years. Good food and quick service and always accommodating. Wings are always great.

Yelp
Real quick on the Report on KPRC CH 2 on this place. The health inspector didn't find anything in the kitchen at all. His words exactly " Never scene a kitchen so clean and on point". The "roaches" found were in a unused area where no where near the food or drinks. Especially the kitchen. Do not listen to those reports cause all they do is Spin it for Ratings. There so many resturaunts they posted that were really not true. If you wanna watch the NFL games, eat great food, and drink, Coaches Pub is the best to be.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Decent drinks. The food is actually pretty good for a sports bar. I can fill up on their fries or Chips and queso. Most often we are quickly tended to and served. Perfect for the lunch hour not to busy that you'll be back to work late. My least favorite item on the menu is probably the wings. Otherwise everything else seems to hit the spot. Especially the drinks.
google avatar

Mallory M.

Yelp
We went here to eat and a homeless man approached us outside the door and we sympathized with him and gave him a $20 and some water bottles. We walked inside and the bartender just stared at us; we didn't know it we needed to seat ourselves or not. She eventually said "it's a bar sit anywhere". She then asked one of us if we gave the homeless man water and we said yes to which she replied, "great, now he's never going to leave". We then got up and left because she was so incredibly rude. I'll never go back.

Yelp
Local sports bar in downtown Houston. Plenty of screens to watch the games on . Daily food and drink specials. Food recommendations: The dry rub wings, the seafood gumbo and the Coaches Classic Pub Burger.
google avatar

Yelp
Watching the Astros game my vehicle was towed. As a customer this is insane. 240$ later I will never come here again. They have great food and drinks, unfortunately they tow people without regard to business. I've come here for many sporting events and enjoyed it however I will not be coming back.

Yelp
Meh. It is not the Maple Leaf - American light beer choices; different clientele; awkward television angles; rowdy Ed Hardy wearing d-bags who are like "so totally extreme" after they polish off their second Smirnoff Ice. It is not Hooters - no single girls tramping around trying to get your attention. Mostly couples, mostly insular groups. It is not Pub Fiction - not extremely catchy and flashy when you are trying to name drop some bling-blingy places to meet for an adult beverage. With their beer choices obviously they are not the Flying Saucer or the Ginger Man. Their mixed drinks are merely meh as well. Not mind blowing. Not super duper creative and nifty like Beaver's/Anvil. But at least they are not watered down - you get your money's worth with the Jack and Coke. I have been here for a few happy hours. I don't cry in my beer about coming here. But every time I have had to "leave early" which generally means heading to somewhere I like a lot better - like the Ginger Man.

Yelp
With the rise of midtown as the place to be once again, I've been trying to scout out some sports bars. This place is just ok. Nothing special. It's never that crowded. The kitchen closes at 12, that makes me sad since they could totally take advantage of the drunken messes, then again maybe that's why they don't.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall. Great drink specials and food. Bartenders are always fun to talk to and everyone there is chill. It is the only bar in midtown that makes me feel like it's my bar every time I go in.

Marla M.

Yelp
Came here to watch the super bowl (Chiefs vs. SF 49'ers), not the best decision. We had to ask for our waitress to come back to our table after the man behind the bar was rude. We wanted to watch the Lombardi presentation and once again, the man behind the bar reminded me that the paying customers wanted to listen to the music..... all 12 customers. I get it.....thanks but no thanks. I thought I went to a sports bar not a dance bar #notusedtobiggames

Yelp
This is a great place to come watch football or basketball games! They have lots of tv screens here and it is usually not to overcrowded like other places. And the good thing about this place is that it is easy to find parking and whenever you get bored here you can just walk over to howl at the moon or pub fiction! oh and they also have this delicious pineapple vodka concoction! You definitely have to try that!
google avatar

Nawar F.

Yelp
What an atmosphere here last Sunday watching USA vs. Portugal! Wowza! We got lucky & found parking right in their lot, free of charge. Our buddy was their b4 us so he had a table ready. Must say, for a 110% full house they provided really good service, our waitress was on it! They have several TVs every couple of feet, so there is no bad seat to watch the game! We also ordered wings and they were very very good! Overall we had a good time, I'd recommend this place for watching future games & for their good service!

Yelp
Extremely rude staff, went in on 6/28 around 12:30pm and was told to leave because I had a to go box from Gotham Pizza next door. I was planning on just grabbing a drink while I wait for my tire to be replaced. Guess they are really sticklers about outside food.

Yelp
First time here with my son for lunch before work walk in had to seat ourselves no one notice us for about 10 minutes an the only waiter decide to ask if we wanted something to drink service was just bad an slow one waiter for about 30 people food warm not hot as long as it took the food should be hot waiter gone say sorry they kind of backed up why make excuses crawfish had no season or taste at all waiter never seen when you need something just keep it moving

Yelp
I went to Coaches Pub on Sunday, 09/19/21 at 5:30 p.m. to watch the football games and meet a few friends. As I entered Coaches Pub I wasn't greeted. I sat down at a table to wait for my friends. The waiter from the bar came to my table and I ordered a lemon drop martini. The lemon drop martini was very strong. When he finally came back to my table, I asked for simple syrup to be added, which he poured it from a cup into my lemon drop!! Shortly after, my friends arrived, and sat down at the table with me. The waiter never acknowledged my friends and they waited several minutes for service. The waiter walked in the dining area to a table near us. We noticed that he took the other customers order, walked away, and still didn't come to our table until my friend got his attention. My friend asked if there were any Sunday specials and he turned around and looked at the dry erase board and stated a domestic pint special and 90 cent wing special. He gave us menus with no suggestions being that it was our first time coming to Coaches Pub. We didn't expect to be treated poorly. The waiter wasn't engaging and he appeared as if he didn't want to be bothered. The waiters body language spoke volumes. Great customer service is essential and we didn't feel welcomed at Coaches Pub. The ambiance was nice. I just wish we could have had a better customer service experience, because we really wanted to watch the games, relax, eat and drink.

Yelp
Coaches Pub is a sports bar with many big screens and a large section of draft beers. Wednesday is steak day at Coaches Pub. They serve a ribeye with a salad and choice of sides for $11. The same ribeye can be ordered off the menu every other day at the regular price of $15.00. I came tonight for the steak and the beers. My steak was fairly fatty and had an okay flavor. The sides included a choice between mash potatoes, french fries and broccoli. I went with the mash potatoes and my friend got the broccoli. Both sides tasted very good. The beer at coaches was not as cold as I like, and they don't have frosty mugs. The waitress did accommodate my request and put a couple beer glasses on ice. On steak night, come before 7:00 to get happy hour prices on the beers. Other Things To Know * 18 Beers on draft * karaoke on Wednesday nights after 8:00 PM * Trivia games on the big screens * Jukebox * 2 dart boards

Yelp
As a major sports fan, I loved this place as soon as I saw all the TVs. There was one in every direction you looked and provided different channels for sports. We went on a Friday night during happy hour. It was not as packed as I expected, but then again, there was no game on. The Friday special was 8 or 12 wings for 50 cents each and I believe $4 drinks. The wings were nice and plump but I ordered two different spicy flavors that ended up tasting pretty much the same. The service was sub-par. We were the only table other than the people at the bar. Our waitress only came by the take our orders and give us our food. We had to flag her down to ask for more water and to ask for our check. The pub included bar trivia games and darts. I'd love to return to this place on a big game night to see how packed it gets and hear all the screaming fans.
google avatar

Htown B.

Yelp
First time here and I played music on the jukebox....the staff turned the volume down on every song played!!!! Unbelievable, but believable considering the location. A juke box can be played by anybody...and I am at liberty 2 play any type of music offered on the jukebox. Smh...it shouldnt matter what music is played, the volume should remain at a constant level. We were paying customers just like everyone else and should have access to the jukebox regardless of what our music choice was. WOW...AGAIN, unbelievable BUT believable #WP

Yelp
Coaches Pub in Midtown knows how to bring the HEAT to the table! This past Sunday I headed there pumped to watch my home team Green Bay Packers beat the Atlanta Falcons. Although the outcome of the game wasn't what I expected , Coaches wings didn't let me down. Their Spicy Garlic & Spicy Dry wings both had my mouth on fire and I enjoyed every minute. I also found out they not only have one Wing Night but TWO every Sunday and Thursday! Any place that takes wing deals this serious will always have a special place in my heart.
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
For a small pub the seafood gumbo was great and the wings were cooked perfectly. As for the staff the bartender Jason was on point all evening never letting your glass go empty.
google avatar

Yelp
Only been here twice. Once I was turned away at the door because there was a cover for a boxing match that was 3 hours away while I just wanted to watch the basketball playoffs with my friends. My friends had apparently arrived in time to be grandfathered in before the cover charge. My second time was last night. We went here because someone in our group thought the kitchen would still be open but it was already closed by 10pm so we ordered food from Gotham Pizza next door. I tried electronically checking in on yelp but ended up drunkenly checking into Little Woodrows instead which was 2 blocks away. My group were the only people in the bar by midnight and the Sunday bartendress was friendly and easy on the eyes. She was cleaning the establishment while we were drinking in preparation for closing, and there did not seem to be a barback helping her out.

Yelp
I went last night for the USA vs Argentina game. I must admit I was disappointed at the pub. USA supporters started showing up in time for the pre-game show, and the Mexico vs. Paraguay game was on the big screen (along with sound). There were over double the amount of USA supporters vs. Mexico supporters. The pub should've changed the big screen and sound to the USA game and put the Mexico game on smaller screens. The Mexico game of course went into overtime, and the pub finally switched the tv channels during the Argentinian national anthem. This means we didn't get to see our fellow American Outlaws members (who traveled there) very well on television before the game (best opportunity for tv shots). Also note the Houston Dynamo front office made an appearance last night as well, giving away hats and advertising the next home game. I tried the chicken fried steak ($8 for salad, chicken fried steak, & mashed potatoes on Saturdays), and the chicken fried steak was REALLY salty. The meat was also 1/3 the portion size of 59 Diner. Although the caesar salad was really good, the mashed potatoes were bland. The long island also had too much Coke (took an hour to finish instead of the usual 15 minutes). For what it's worth, the menu has a large variety for a pub, so I will keep trying other entrees. A friend liked their wings, and I'd consider her my go-to girl if I ever needed advice on where to get the best wings. The real saving grace about last night was the excellent service. Waitresses kept coming by to check on us (without being overbearing), even to the point of refilling my glass with a pitcher of water I ordered for the table. Last night we discovered the back "patio" which is more like a alley with a fence. It's a door in the back with an exit sign and a warning, "Alarm will not sound." The two tables are RIGHT next to the air conditioning units and garbage. It's kind of creepy, but I guess it works. If anything, the air conditioning units served as the basis of people taking pictures for a Finesse ad.

Yelp
Dudeeeee. Just let me vent. I had a horrible day so I just wanted the wings that I ordered; the correct wings. I got spicy garlic and red sauce. She came out with red sauce and Cajun rub. NOT what I ordered so I asked her which was which and, guys, she literally lied and made up some flavors! Did I send it back? No, because after that I no longer wanted to be there. If you can't get my order right I can't come back. Sprite was good though.
google avatar

Yelp
Chill, dark vibe. Staff was nice and knowledgeable about the menu. I would not recommend the crawfish nor the margarita. My fiend got the nachos and loved them. Prices were good as well just flavorless crawfish

Susan G.

Yelp
Great local bar that has the best waitstaff. They are all friendly. Great atmosphere, good music and plenty of TV's. Very good food and a large selection on menu. Highly recommend.
google avatar

LaTanya D.

Yelp
Great pub for drinks and laughs. The menu has a good variety. For a -Pub/bar of course the drinks and wings are always on point. Now I was shocked to find out they have very well cooked and seasoned blackened Tilapia. I honestly have no complaints about anything on the menu. Thursday and Sunday wings $.65 my go to place for wings! Of course Sam behind the bar is AWESOME!! He makes the best drinks and has a great personality. I definitely recommend a visit, whether to watch a game, on your lunch break, or a date night out for invested couples.
google avatar

Ashley Y.

Yelp
A cool place in midtown with fair drink price. Its spacious inside, they serve food as well. The service was pretty good. I will say this is a good spot for a drink around this this area and to watch some games.
google avatar

Debra O.

Yelp
Smells like a sewage problem. Impolite bartender. We will not be back. We were asked for a credit card before ordering lunch. Bizarre. I ordered a veggie burger that looks like old wet cardboard served on toast. Could not eat it.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite unpretentious places to come in Midtown for watching sports. Their drinks are reasonably priced, they always have specials on both food and drinks and servers are very chill. It almost doesn't quite fit in Midtown, but im still glad it's there. Not affiliated with the other Coach's sports bar locations out on the west and nw sides of houston. Parking can sometimes be challenging. They have their own lot, but share with a few other businesses, and some people use the lot as a starting point to park then walk to other areas in midtown.
google avatar

Douglas G.

Yelp
Inexpensive and good food. Guinness and Jager on tap. The fish tacos and chicken quesadilla were awesome. Sports bar vibe.
google avatar

James E.

Yelp
I really enjoy their poker and their staff is top-notch and the best !
google avatar

Wesley B.

Yelp
This is one of the best sports bar to come to in Midtown when you want to catch a sports game- hassle free. Is the food memorable? No. Is their beer or drink menu anything worth noting? No. Is there anything special about this bar, people or theme wise, that stands out. No. So why do I say it's one of the best sports bar in Midtown? Two things: you can always find a parking spot and there's always a place to sit. Parking in Midtown/Montrose sucks and though I admit, there are better bars, sometimes I don't feel like dealing with it. What's more, I can't tell you how many times I've gone into a place like the Hay Merchant and have not been able to find a place to sit. It's annoying, especially when a really good game is on or you're really hungry. Coaches gives you a decent enough sports bar experience w/ friendly service, without very much hassle. They serve typical bar food and your standard selection of drinks. As long as your expectations are in order, I'm pretty sure you'll leave happy. Overall: Food: C Service: B+ Decor/Experience: C+ Intangibles: A
google avatar

Dani L.

Yelp
Very relaxed. I found parking no problem. Just about everything on the menu is fried - except the hootch. You can watch any sporting event that you want. There are plenty of televisions. Otherwise, the bartender was friendly but not overbearing and the music is loud. And, from the 80's. IF you are lucky. Be afraid of the restrooms. Not only were they dirty but they were also totally backed up and looked as if they'd been ignored all weekend.

Yelp
Fiesta Burger is one of the best burgers in Houston. That alone gets 5 stars. Service is good. Everything I have had for food there is top notch. Nothing like any of the other Coaches throughout Houston. Get the Fiesta Burger
