18 Portland Breweries Showcasing the Evolution of Craft Brewing

"Migration opened its doors on Glisan back in 2010 and built a solid following with locals in the area. In 2018 it began an aggressive expansion campaign that has now seen the brewery explode into four locations throughout the city, one of which features a rooftop bar. Its flagship, Straight Outta Portland IPA, is one of the top westies (West Coast IPAs) in the city. Migration doesn’t seem like it’s out to reinvent the wheel, here; producing top-tier West Coast and Hazy IPAs is the main goal, but some kettle sours and its award-winning northwest-style red ale help to round out the portfolio." - Ron Scott

"Beer on the Move Finding great beer is rarely about the destination and more about the journey. There are no shortage of trails to take you on beer expeditions in Portland , with Migration taking its place among the best. Locally sourced, owned, operated and distributed, the beers coming out of this brewery are broad and balanced. The brewers embrace the importance of innovation, while staying true to styles that span centuries. The beer menu is all Migration, all the time, with seasonal and special batches breaking into the lineup on a regular basis. The IPAs are hoppy and the stouts are, well, stout. Keep track of your alcohol content (always posted along with bitterness values) if you plan on operating machinery after a couple rounds. Some styles creep up into the double-digit range. You'd swear the folks serving the beer are the ones making it, based on their knowledge and expertise in pairing your taste to their brews. The other benefit is a great pub menu with something for everyone. Try the pulled pork nachos or hypocrite burger to give your cold one something to wash down. The pet-friendly patio seating is lively rain or shine and the beers are on sale during televised local sports team events. Plenty of onsite bike parking, too, if you decide to two-wheel it in."

Google
Friendly neighbourhood brewery, family friendly atmosphere (half the customers were families with kids). Nice variety of beer styles on tap and a small variety of cocktails and hard liquor available. Beers are solid nothing that blew me away. The food ( burger focused, other location pizza focused) looked pretty good. Friendly fast service. Outdoor seating available and indoor annex area for private parties /functions. On street parking is tough as in residential area.

Google
Migration brewing is awesome! They have great beer and happy hour specials. When I went I had their cauliflower wings and smash burger and I've been dreaming about both ever since. We tried their stout and an IPA and both were great. The staff was super nice and chatty. I would highly recommend Migration Brewing.

Google
I slipped into Migration Brewing for a quick bite and beer with no expectations (other than knowing they have some really good beers). I was blown away by how delicious their food is! We tried several of the crunchwraps, and loved them. There was also ample seating for everyone, even with the trivia and several large parties that were there!

Google
Good beer & Nachos. Warm & friendly staff. Wings could be better though.

Google
The beer is always fantastic and I need to try the food but my 5 stars goes to the absolute earth angel who was so caring and generous and lovely while my friend was going through a tough time. I didn't catch your name but I hope you know who you are. Thank you for being a girls girl and going the extra mile to comfort my friend and encourage her call me. You're a real one <3

Google
Great location to grab a beer, sit outside, and enjoy the sunshine or rain :) Had the Impossible Burger on this visit and bravo to the Staff on it's preparation. The burger bleeds and tastes like beef but it's not. I could seriously consider cutting back on beef intake if more places offered this product on their menu.

Google
I had an amazing experience. First to begin. I was planning to go to Chapman school to watch the Swifts nest. I read in the paper that they were visible from Migration Brewery on Glisan. Not sure if I got confused or the news mentioned the rooftop bar (which is at the location by Providence Park but not at Glisan). So expecting to go watch the Swifts and expecting crowds I arrived way early but on time to get matched up with the blonde gentleman who gave me really good information about the Swifts, where to see them, and helped me set realistic expectations. Since I had time before they were due, I enjoyed an amazing coffee stout or two and a custom crunch wrap. I had fully expected to be somewhere else for happy hour but this was the right choice. I don't drink very often but the stout was so good and I had time that I decided another one was in order. Not sure if I would see the swifts, I definitely did. And I can't wait to return. Zoom in on the pics

Google
Doesn’t even deserve one star. Beer is tasty I get it from Safeway all the time, so I figured the brewery would be just as good. First time visiting and definitely my last. Food was comparable to a TV dinner. Salad saturated in dressing that I couldn’t even consume it. And the portion size of beans and rice were pitiful on the comfort bowl; in addition we added chicken that was hardly seen totaling that one item to $14 (worth $6 at most). Mind you the beers were forgotten so the lady made them complimentary. A self serve establishment with prices of a full service restaurant. Paid $39 for a stomach ache. If you choose to visit I recommend the beers only! Don’t waste your money on the food. And p.s. don’t forget to buss your own table and clear your plates of discarded food in the trash bin before leaving. Worst experience in a long time!

Yelp
Nice outdoor patio. Good beers, I like the burger/beer combo deal that they offer as well. Good brewery if you have kids as well
google avatar

Yelp
It is a solid place to come for some good food and a chill atmosphere. They have a good outside patio and a spacious interior. You order from the counter and will get your food and beverage from a server. The service was pretty quick and friendly. Their burger special was one of the better ones in town. The shoestring fries here are also solid.

Yelp
Migration Brewing has quite a few locations in the Portland area and you can get their cans in Washington state at bottle shops. So all in all this is a fairly large company. The beer I had the other night from Migration I believe may have been my first one from this brewery which is kind of surprising to me. But don't hold me to that. Straight Outta Portland was the beer I had. It was an IPA and not really a specific kind either. Just a typical one. It had a bitter, floral and tropical taste to it. Not the most memorable beer I've come across but at the same time fairly refreshing which wins a four star rating for this brewery location.

Yelp
Happy hour burger and fries is a great delicious deal! Cool pub like atmosphere. Parking is a little tricky but the restaurant vibe is very relaxed and chill
google avatar

Mare B.

Yelp
Fries are excellent. One burger was solid; the other two went into the trash. Their ability to read is lacking. No Pink means NO PINK. That's a lot of money to light on fire.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped add a pop-up tent along the water for some beer. I cannot speak for the brick and mortar because I've never been there, but I did stop to have some of their beer at a pop-up farmers market right next to the water. It was the perfect stop on a hot day, they are a few different choices we went with something A little more cool and crisp, I believe it was their logger. The beer was tasty. I would definitely try other migration beers in the future!

Kenna H.

Yelp
Beers and food menus had a good selection. Kids menu was decent as well. Nice selection of IPAs.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
Had the sassy lemonade mocktail with some dirty fries and I'd highly recommend it! The drink tasted like juice more than a mocktail, but it tasted good so I didn't mind. Dirty fries was plentiful and a shareable size but a little messy to eat.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
I went here with some friends when Migration was participating in the Portland chicken wing thing. It was fun and has a good location right on Williams. Solid beer and food offerings and they have a nice patio area out back.
google avatar

Charles C.

Yelp
Came on chilly fall day to chat with some friends. They have decent indoor spacing and outdoor tent / bench for this Covid time and all the right protocal, outdoors with space heaters but be ready to have a few layers on as it is still cold unless you are an eskimo. Pretty MEH selection of food and beers you'd expect for a Portlandia place. Not bad, not a thing amazing over the many other choices, street parking can be hit or miss but you come because you are a local as nothing notable to make a drive versus the many other choices in town
google avatar

Donna R.

Yelp
I will pay $7 for a microbrew that is 16 oz. Migration charges $8 for 14 oz. Felt ripped off!
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday after bomb Ramen down the street so there was no crowd but this place can hold a lot of people out front, indoor and outback. Rain coverage is great and they supply heat upon request. Burgers and great beer. We had the Fresh Hop Pale and it's my favorite Pale I've had in a long while. Pina Colada Sour was interesting. A few TVs for sports. Staff was nice. We'll be back for more beers and burgers next round. Cheers and beers y'all!
google avatar

Macklin M.

Yelp
Really great service and a nice air conditioned restaurant too! Get the Migration burger you won't be disappointed! Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Jaime T.

Yelp
Love this place. Pizza and calzones are bomb, atmosphere is great. Love the book clubs you did awhile ago, please do more. I like that my family can meet there and have a big table too.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Lots and lots of outdoor seating, and pretty good beers. Most of the ipa's tasted the same, but the Pinot noir beer was pretty interesting. Sour was good too!!
google avatar

Dung H.

Yelp
What an awesome view!!! Good beer good vibe can't complain. Tables are limited but very spread out. They play really good music and the vibe is chill. Would definitely come back on a nice sunny day.

Yelp
If you've read my previous Migration review you know I really like this brewery. What I learned is that Migration buys beef, pork, chicken and seafood exclusively through Wilder company. Wilder works with sources local to Oregon and the North West providing superior quality, like Carlton Farms, Carmen Ranch, PaintedHills, Mary's, Treflin and on and on it goes. Check out Wilder web site for complete list and their story; and you'll be impressed. Their purveyor list includes sustainable, grass feed, organic, humane treatment of animals, drug free, GMO free. What I am looking for! So, a big shout out to Migration Brewing for being conscientious and providing the best quality grub possible. Impressive! Migration does what I would like to see more PDX brew pubs and eateries do! That is support local sustainable farmers! Put on the website. Put it on the menu. And I enjoyed the lip smacking Mercury magazine "$5 burger" burger (beef, pork and kimchi) with Straight Outta Portland IPA!

Yelp
We loved the openness of the venue and the ability to sit outside and enjoy the nice day. We got a flight and enjoyed everything that we tried. They also have cute merch that we couldn't help but bring back to Kentucky with us!

Marina E.

Yelp
Came here for burger week 2023 and the Chimichurrgur was delicious. The atmosphere was relaxed. The service was friendly and laid-back.
google avatar

Aniece S.

Yelp
This was an impromptu day. We went here to stop and eat and of course grab beer. they are doing a great job to enforce covid rules and still giving great service. Chicken Strips plate- the strips were seasoned well, good and crispy. The batter was light as well, come with ties and slaw. Wings- good and hot, plenty of flavor, also a nice portion to share. The beer! the beer was great they currently have a "black is beautiful" which was also for a good cause. I also an IPA that was tropical.

Jennifer F.

Yelp
The General Tao's wings are fabulous! So is the Caesar and Nachos. What really makes this memorable and on the "must return" list are the friendly bartenders, so engaging and they SMILE! The cold beer and great music playing are a huge bonus, thank you Migration!
google avatar

Weslie I.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here. The chicken tenders, fries, and sauces that come with it are very very good. IMO, the burger was a poor excuse for a burger. I've had better at McDonald's. Considering how good the other stuff was I was shocked what's joke their burger turned out to be.
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
Fun location. At the moment, mostly outside seating. Great.... Great beers! Still driving and haven't had a bad one yet! For the team! For the group! Out of Yelp elite respect! I'll keep trying beers, again for the team. Yes, that's how much I care!
google avatar

Dc B.

Yelp
Good food great beers! The staff are very friendly an did everything to help us out during our visit. Love their beer! Cheers!
google avatar

Kaitlin C.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Good array of beers. Friendly bartender. Ample indoor and outdoor seating. Dogs allowed during times of COVID.
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Thanks for the vegan options! Here's my pretzel with vegan queso. The queso has cumin for a southwest flavor, I imagine to complement the vegan nachos as well. I would've preferred a beer flavored cheddar, but that's just preference..
google avatar

Rick I.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Migration Brewing to be impressed by their burger for burger week but, it was awful! The beer we had was really good and Migration Brewing offered a special price of $12 for a pint of beer, french fries and the burger. Really looking forward to something really good BUT....the Mc Donald's kids burger would probably have a better taste! Very dissatisfied!! I believe if you are doing burger week it should be at least good....
google avatar

Tyler N.

Yelp
Really cool spot here in portland. Came here as they were apart of the burger week and it def was worth the stop by! I came here around 5pm on a random Tuesday and the atmosphere was already pretty lively!

Elyse G.

Yelp
Only tried the drinks, not the food. The beer was pretty good, rating 4 stars since I would've liked more sour/cider options since those are my preference but the sour they did have was decent.
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Back to the U.S. since pre-Covid and my old friend brought me here today--loved the beers, the eats, the relaxed open-air seating - everything My burger was super-tasty but not quite as well-done as my old-fashioned self is used to so I asked please cook it just a bit more-- they brought me this huge platter of fries to keep me busy, then soon turned up with another complete burger meal for me ! (Thanks, Migration!)

Megan M.

Yelp
Great food and even better service. The bartender/server was awesome and very personable. The broccoli and Brussels sprouts were my favorite.
google avatar

Constantine J.

Yelp
This is a great brewery. Definitely one of my favorites! Great choice of beers to select from. Stopped by for burger week and it was awesome!! So tasty and packed with flavor. Definitely recommend checking it out.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
I've tried eating here several times because I both live and work in the area and am often disappointed with my food. (The only exception is ordering the kale salad.) Today I tried a new item. I ordered online for a pick up at a later time but they made it as soon as the order was received. According to a text I received, my order was ready an hour before the scheduled pick up so I assume it sat on the counter for that long getting cold.

Yelp
----- Burger Week 2017 Review ----- 6th burger of the week: "Pho burger?" I would not call this a Pho burger. The burger wasn't bad, but I wouldn't say it was particularly special either. Though it had some bean sprouts, chopped carrots and other vegetables found in Pho, there was an odd mayonnaise sauce that did not resemble flavors of Vietnamese food, nor Pho. The burger itself wasn't bad, and though it did have some of the same ingredients, if I had eaten this without knowing the name prior then I would never have guessed Pho. I think there should have been at least some Sriracha, lime, or basil to bring those flavors typically found in the style of soup. Not bad, but not Pho me.
google avatar

Cedric J.

Yelp
Over the years, this place has really improved. The beer is consistent, and the food has drastically improved thanks to their new chef, and with the annex, it is much less crowded. The staff are friendly, competent, and just awesome. I love their mac, and they have a good liquor selection as well. While sports ball is still a thing, it also means happy hour the whole time. Not everyone is screaming at the top of their lungs anymore too because there's just more room to avoid that. And the patio is glorious and dog-friendly. Winning.

Yelp
We came to Migration on a Saturday afternoon, which I think is a nice time to go to this spot. My boyfriend and I were doing our own little brewery tour, and this was a nice first stop - cute patio, small but nice seating inside. I had the Patio Pale, which was very good, and he had the Straight Outta Portland IPA. He liked his, too! But our favorite part of Migration was the Pretzel Twists. We added the jalapeno cheddar, and they were SO good! The beer cheese that comes with them was exceptionally delicious (my boyfriend is still talking about it haha), and the pretzels themselves were definitely above average - plain they would've been really tasty, but the melted cheese and jalapenos on top were even better. We just wanted a snack while we were there, but I'd love to see what the rest of their menu is like after the amazing pretzels :)

Alexandria F.

Yelp
I came here for beer, but the migration burger and fries stole my heart. So much flavor and cooked perfectly! Everything was phenomenal. I tried a saison (the greater gatsby I think it's called) and the hop fire iipa. I literally redownloaded yelp to write this review.

Nick O.

Yelp
Cool spot, friendly service, and a great hazy on tap. We were visiting Portland just to try out breweries and Migration was a good one. Once we had the Mo-Haze-ic, couldn't stop getting it. The beer was great and not over-priced.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
Children everywhere. Everywhere! It was like Lord of the goddamned Flies last time we visited. I get being child-friendly, but uh...they don't need to treat the patio like a public park while I'm trying to drink away my work day. They hardly ever change their beer lineup and the beers they usually have are middle of the road. I've never gotten food, but have no desire to do so, as the menu doesn't appeal to me and other Yelpers' opinions about it help me feel like I've made the right choice. Like every other meh brewery, it's good if you wanna catch a buzz in a pinch.
google avatar

Shauna F.

Yelp
only reason I'm giving stars is for the outdoor patio, which is kid and dog friendly. There is a water station and water bowls for dogs. I was not impressed with my food though, nor with my son's. My chicken banh mi was way too dry... the chicken tasted overcooked and I couldn't even taste the sauce, and it didn't help that there was a lot of bread to top it off. Very disappointed. My son had the kids meal of chicken tenders, which was more like chicken nuggets that they didn't serve any sauce with or even ask if we wanted sauce. We were never checked on by servers at any point during our visit in the patio. I won't be back.

Joy G.

Yelp
We hadn't been to migration in a while as it is a bit of a drive for us, today we find the beer selection severely limited compared to the previous visits and we ordered two bavarian pretzel twists tilamook cheese , and got a frozen pretzel from the grocery store and nacho cheese sauce from the can which cost us 7$. We won't be coming back.
google avatar

Sandi S.

Yelp
My adult daughter and I ate lunch here. We had a veggie burger with fries and an Ahi salad. The food was good for "small breweries focused on beer" food, although I thought the price was a little more than it was worth. My real problem with this place is that the person who served our food (I later learned that her name was Whitney and that she is the General Manager) was "Flagging." "Flagging" is a throwback sort of Grindr, where people wear color-coded bandanas in their back pockets advertising the specific kink they're looking for. Now I'm a Portlander and I don't care whether she wanted a good beating but I found it not only unprofessional but kind of "skeezy." Not much puts me offa ma food but....Gross Whitney! And shame on the bigger "bosses" for letting their managers fish for their fetish on company time.
google avatar

Josh F.

Yelp
I have to say that this was a bit of a lack luster experience. The nachos were good nothing spectacular just some black beans and jalapeños with some cheese salsa and a sour cream drizzle. I was also a little frustrated with the discussion of the beer. I asked specifically about there Glisan street isa and they just said oh it's a session ale and that was it. So I also use an app called untapped that I use to track my beers and I put in the Glisan street isa and it comes up as this dry hop one and I asked is this the dry hop they said yes. I wouldn't have minded but I like to try new beers all the time. Had they told me it was the dry hop versus just saying it's an isa I would have been better informed. I tried there isa as well and just wasn't overly impressed. I don't think that I will be going back here on my own accord but if someone wants to go here I'll tag along
google avatar

Yelp
Not coming back. Even if I has an ankle bracelet on and was restricted to 100 feet within said boundaries, I would gnaw it off and run. Two years ago, you cheaped me on the nachos (were you kidding me??) So, friday, my wife and I decided to try food for the first time in two years coming here. Cheese board??? More like surf board because the baguette and pickles done surfed away!!!! Along with most of the grapes that looked like they were "picked" over before given to us. You said "menu change", I say "unaccountable", "dishonest" and "cheap". Not ever coming back!! Use free WI-Fi to look for another brewpub!!
google avatar

Andre W.

Yelp
Pretty decent brewery that had a decent selection! place was rocking on a nice Saturday as they were doing tours. Everyone was very friendly and bonding over very nice beers. I made a few friends here!

Armand M.

Yelp
Solid 3.5 overall. The food came out in record time, like 8 minutes. Ceaser salad was delicious, fried were great. The comfort bowl was a little underwhelming, but decent. Overall a good experience since many other places in the area were closed.
google avatar

Morgan F.

Yelp
Good beer and good food. It's been a solid spot for meeting up with friends but it's also a go to when we want a place that's quick, easy and more affordable. The only downfall is that they've been closing early still even with Covid restrictions starting to lighten up. We were told last call at 8:30, told to hug our drinks at 8:45 and were kicked out by 9pm
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Migration... especially at the NE location! The crew, beverages and food are all fabulous. Extremely grateful for the super-powered outdoor heaters and covered area on their lovely patio to create a safe and fun place through COVID winter. In pre-covid indoor dining times, another major bonus at Migration is that Blazer games are visible from any seat in the house. Cheers to all the crew here!

PA L.

Yelp
Great Food- served a party of 60+ in a matter minutes and keep the beverages flowing. Excellent staff
