Nice little corner for sushi in the Pembroke Pines area, right off Pines Blvd. near the Wal-Mart.
One of my closest friends, as well as my roommate, had been hyping this place up for a while, and I had a surprise opportunity to go have lunch there, so I went, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Mikan is not a huge restaurant, but it makes you feel like it's bigger than it is. When you walk in, you see the booths on the corners, tables near the center, and you peek straight into the sushi bar area where your food is being prepped. If you look right next to it, you'll see a chalkboard with the current specials, which change on occasion.
When I arrived, my friends had already ordered a seafood risotto appetizer. It had a little bit of everything, including shrimp and possibly squid, and it reminded me of a seafood paella, except a little creamier, as risotto tends to be. We followed this up with some takoyaki, which is a seafood fritter, in this case, probably octopus. The mayo on top added a layer of creaminess to compliment the flavor, as I felt it a bit salty. We all ordered a small cup of miso soup, which I felt lacked flavor.
My friend Shah ordered nigiri and they were prepared beautifully. My roommate Yomar ordered something called the Deep Fried Bagel roll, which had salmon, avocado and cream cheese deep fried and topped with eel sauce, which was easily the best dish out of everything we tried. He also ordered the Curry Chicken Katsu, but it was lacking in flavor, and the curry tasted too much like ginger. I went there for the ramen, as my friend Shah has been to Japan and had mentioned, and I quote, that "it's the only ramen he has had so far that compared to Japan", so I had the tonkotsu. The broth was nice and savory, with a nice pork flavor, and it had a nice amount of pork meat to go along with it. It was good, but not mind-blowing.
Afterwards, we settled on the Japanese Roll Cake for dessert. It looked similar to Brazo Gitano, but tasted nothing like it. It was bland, but creamy.
Good place to have sushi in Pembroke Pines. Would go again.
