The Best Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland’s St. Johns Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Steaming bowls of ramen arrive filled with delicate-but-chewy noodles and light, bright broths at this Lombard Japanese restaurant. The rich and creamy chicken shoyu is a top choice here, omitting the more familiar slices of pork for soy-marinated chicken, in addition to a jammy egg. There is not a lot of nearby competition for sushi, but even so, Mikasa’s is worth an order: The spicy salmon roll is finished with a spicy yuzu sauce, for a floral kick." - Rebecca Roland

Golden Days

Google
The ramen and karaage were great! I got the tonkotsu red ramen. It was really spicy and delicious, perfect with a Sapporo. We had a relaxing time eating here and checking out the shops nearby.

Google
We ordered a Misho Red Ramen, the presentation was great, the quantity was adequate and the service was very quick. They have tried to inculcate the Portland vibe inside the restaurant which is very much to the point using Japanese graffiti. For $14 it's pretty good and I will recommend this place to whoever reads this

Renee Zapf

Google
Be warned, they've started using those spaghetti type noodles. They're doing some redesign, the interior looks great! Rolls are delicious, staff are friendly, beer is reasonable. Even the broth and egg and everything*else* about the ramen is still phenomenal. But when the noodles are all wrong, what's the point? Server said she'd been getting complaints so I'm hoping they switch back to yummy chewy real noodles SOON!

Kira Powell

Google
My friend and I stumbled upon Mikasa while exploring Portland and were pleasantly surprised! The miso ramen was exactly what I wanted. It was simple but delicious and honestly probably the best ramen I’ve had in my life. I can’t wait to go back to Portland and eat at Mikasa again.

John Lee

Google
Tucked in the charming neighborhood of St. John's this little ramen place is nice and quaint. The tokatsu was has a thick flavorful broth with noodles that offers just a right amount of chew. However the fried rice with spicy tuna wasn't our favorite - it's creative but just not for us.

PNW_Reviews

Google
Ramen for me is a 5/10 - so I wouldn’t come back for that particular menu item—like really, half an egg for a $16 bowl of ramen? Broth was good, but nothing to boast about. The sushi roll was decent, but wasn’t a fan of the sauce they added on top. The star of the show was the gyozos—probably one the the best I’ve had in a while. 2.5 star rating - probably won’t come back. Spent close to $60 for lunch and still wanted to pizza from Gracie’s (sucks they were closed then).

Derek Eley

Google
I got the spicy Tonkotsu and my partner got the spicy Veggie ramen. We shared the Gyoza. Everything was great! Flavorful broth for both and the Gyoza was delicious. I recommend the house hot Sake, it was delicious paired well with the Ramen.

Google
Simple spot in St. John’s for an easy lunch or dinner. It’s casual counter service and the tables will fill up. Not the best sushi but good for this area.

Yelp
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Mikasa Sushi in St. John's, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was inviting and the staff was incredibly welcoming. We started our meal with the Salmon Collar appetizer, and it was truly incredible. The portions were generous, and the flavor was absolutely divine. The salmon was perfectly cooked, tender, and bursting with flavor - a real treat for the taste buds. Next, we tried the Mikasa Roll, and it did not disappoint. The roll was delicious and beautifully presented, with fresh micro greens delicately placed on top. The combination of flavors and textures was spot on, making each bite a delightful experience. Overall, Mikasa Sushi exceeded our expectations with their top-notch food and warm hospitality. If you're in St. John's and looking for a fantastic sushi experience, I highly recommend giving Mikasa Sushi a visit. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Its a small hole in the wall on Lombard st that you cannot pass on. I had the pork Tonkotsu Ramen and a side of the fried chicken karaage. The pork broth was so flavorful. Fast and polite service. 10/10 would come again
google avatar

Darrah C.

Yelp
The sushi was decent but there were a ton of fruit flies flying around the table when I was waiting for my order and I got super grossed out.
google avatar

Jane W.

Yelp
We've had Mikasa delivery a few times and finally got to go in person. It's a nice, small, restaurant with a few tables along 1 wall. The waitresses were friendly and helpful with our questions before ordering. We got the gyoza, edamame, miso ramen, laksa ramen (made gluten free), cali & avocado rolls, and a poke bowl. Everyone was very happy with their order and gobbled it. The laksa was nicely spicy and the soft boiled egg in the ramen was so good. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
So good. Sushi just melts in your mouth. Yummy. Can't wait to go back and try the ramen.

Yelp
Love the fact I live close to mikasa. Would really Suck if it was bad and I had to go further. Great ramen choices rather you just like tasty ramen or spicy ramen. Also pretty good sushi on top of great service. I'm happy with it being in the neighborhood
google avatar

Yelp
Very quaint pace tucked in the neighborhood of St. John's. Friendly service and very clean. The ramen is too notch with a heavy creamy broth and chewy noodles that soaks up the broth as you slurp. Reminds me of Japan. The fried rice with spicy tuna is innovative but not too my taste however. A great place to get a hot bowl of ramen for sure.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
Had the spicy vegetable ramen, honestly it really tasted great. The staff was nice. Only downside is they only give half an egg? Man. I almost gave 4 stars for that. What're you guys hiding the other half for? We want our full egg!!
google avatar

Megan T.

Yelp
I love a good sushi and ramen spot so I was excited to try this place. It's a small restaurant on Lombard with a short and sweet menu. Order at the counter, find a table (there's only a few inside), then the staff will bring your dishes out to you. Water is self serve and bus your own tables at the end. We ordered the edamame, one punch roll, spicy chashu ramen, and shoyu paitan ramen. We chose the one punch roll because it sounded like it would be spicy with the jalapenos and spicy salmon, but it was a little disappointing. The ramen was tasty with lots of toppings but a little too salty for my liking.
google avatar

colleen p.

Yelp
Ordered takeout and it was ready on time. Fresh and delicious. The Spicy Salmon Roll was sliced salmon rather than minced. Very good.
google avatar

Yelp
First of, I'll say that the customer service could certainly be worked on. First off you order at the counter, which is fine; but I was a little frustrated that the guy behind the desk became irritated when we didn't know we were supposed to do so. Even as we did order at the counter, he was incredibly short with us, for no other apparent reason. The food on the other hand was really good. My wife and I ordered a whole smorgasbord. We started with the Gyoza, which was flavorful and warm. The only thing I was disappointed with was that they were deep-fried rather than pan fried, so there was no textural contrast between the steamed upper half against the crisp underside. My wife had their edamame, which came steaming with nice flakes of salt. We also split the mango tango which we both enjoyed. The tempura shrimp was a great change in texture. the acidity of the mango paired really well with the sweetness of the unagi and the fattiness of the avocado. Lastly I had the Spicy Chashu, which I do highly recommend if you love spice. It's not incredibly spicy, but enough to leave a kick. The Chashu is thick and fatty and you can still see the nice char on it.
google avatar

Nevalyn N.

Yelp
My friend and I here because it was nearest sushi spot we could found.. first, you ordered through the counter and someone will bring out the food for you. I ordered mango tango, mother of dragon and chicken karaage. The chicken karaage was crispy but mild in flavors. I prefer the chicken to be in smaller pieces than a whole drumstick itself. The sushi was really mediocre for me. Nothing spectacular. They didn't used fresh ingredients and the rice was dry and cold. Kinda disappointed for two rolls. They have very limited drink and alcohol selection as well.

Khara B.

Yelp
Hands down my fav sushi spot in PDX. Every single time my order is perfect, fresh, and delicious! Their sumiso aioli is packed with flavor, and addicting! I've only ordered via Uber Eats so far, but I'd consider myself a regular. Can't wait to get a chance to finally dine in. Wish they had tips added to their menu, so I could tip the staff directly. I highly recommend the Chicken Karaage, Eden Roll, and Karaage Roll!
google avatar

Tricia S.

Yelp
Need a quick lunch spot and I was in the area. I had been wanting a simple roll for a while so I ordered via their online app. California roll is what you'd expect - 10 pieces so a decent deal. Gyoza - fried dumpling with a heavy onion flavor. Great with dipping sauce but didn't stay crisp for long. Ramen - deep flavor in broth, egg perfectly runny, chicken was smoky and flavorful ... BUT there was romaine lettuce shredded into the mix and wilted lettuce is not my thing. I picked out as much as possible before pouring the broth over and enjoying the delish soup. All in it was a $25 lunch/dinner.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Desperately needed some comfort food on this cold night. The spicy pork Ramen was recommended and totally hit the spot. Also treated myself to a vegetarian role. Everything was delicious and the staff is incredibly friendly. #Legit.

David W.

Yelp
Never coming back. Bad scene letting a patron FaceTime loudly even though the rest of us trying to have a quiet lunch were clearly upset. A restaurant needs to take control of their ambiance.
google avatar

Jake F.

Yelp
Amazing place! Got the scorpion roll here for 13 dollars. Loved the texture between the thinly sliced avocado, crispy and juicy tempura, crab, and spicy sauce. The only thing that disappointed me was on the menu, which they call "house crab" which I misled for fresh real crab, but it's just fake crab. Great nonetheless and I would love to come back here to try their other rolls!
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
As a resident of St. Johns, I'm endlessly excited to have a ramen and sushi place right up the street. This place is excellent. The service was quick and kind, the sushi was very good quality (the mango was fresh, and there's a great combination of flavors in the two rolls we tried. The gyoza are quite good: well-fried w/ 10 small pieces which made for great sharing with friends. I highly recommend sitting outside with your food, especially while it's still so nice in PDX. It's a great little outdoor area. My only small critique would be that the sushi rice itself wasn't as solidly made as other places I've been in town (the pieces fell apart pretty easily). But, for the price point, service, location, and overall quality of ingredients, this is a really solid addition to St. Johns. I can't wait to go back and try more things!

Yanely S.

Yelp
Their Ramen is very good, at a good temperature and the right kind of spicy. The service is very friendly and helpful when asking about the menu.
google avatar

Peter J.

Yelp
Pretty good quality Ramen. They do lots of to go business. I'd definitely eat here again definitely.
google avatar

Jo M.

Yelp
I love that Mikasa has vegan options! I'm glad they've got indoor seating during the rains but I really appreciate all the outdoor seating during the dry times. It's conveniently placed next to a great cocktail bar!
google avatar

Tom A.

Yelp
The food is great! Wonderful rolls that aren't covered on goopy sauces. My Mikasa Roll was delicious. Their miso soup was the best I've had and a nice big bowl of it, too. Annie was our very pleasant server. The interior is tiny and the menu is streamlined, so I dinged them on the stars it. This is a wonderful spot!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this little spot in St. John's! They are always so friendly and I always feel welcome when I walk in. They are very organized and offered me a glove if I didnt feel comfortable, due to the pandemic, on touching their machine to pay. I came in later in the evening after work to satisfy my sushi craving I've had all week! I got the Mother of Dragon roll, Spicy salmon roll, and california roll Love this spot and love the people!
google avatar

M. Ben B.

Yelp
Can't say I'm happy with the warm sushi picked up 5 mins from my house. No utensils, no wasabi ginger or soy sauce. Prices are 10% higher because I used Yelp. How long was this raw fish left out on a counter? If you're going to finish making the food 20 minutes before it's picked up, then tell me. Last time I eat here. Kazumi is much better.
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
This is my local goto for ramen or a roll. Selection is limited, but everything is done well. Wishing for more gluten-free options in the rolls, but honestly I Iove the One-Punch so much that it has become "the thing" I go for there!
google avatar

Lana P.

Yelp
I'm surprised this place gets such conflicting reviews. This is out go-to sushi spot, and we do online ordering for pickup once a week. Their rolls are pretty varied but all tasty. We love the masterpiece, mikasa, mango tango, scorpion, and mother of dragon. We also love the wings. As for ramen, we typically get the miso one and we think it's pretty good (is it the best? No it's not afuri but ramen has never been something I seek certain qualities in so it does the job for me). For the prices (and proximity), this is my favorite sushi hands down. Sushi One is close by too but I didn't like their rolls as much. Conveyor belt stuff has its place but it doesn't usually end up cheaper. Kazumi is at the carts but it's harder to secure since you have to actively be at the carts to order. So all things considered, I will continue to regularly order from Mikasa.
google avatar

Allie D.

Yelp
Ordered many a time now and my order is always correct. Decent sized rolls. Wish they gave more wasabi and ginger when we order four rolls. Also, plz don't include utensils on our GrubHub order if we leave it unchecked. We hate waste and don't need the forks lol!
google avatar

Yelp
A place to get some ramen that's located out in the St. John's neighborhood. This place has a simple menu that consists of a handful of ramen selection with sushi options. The place took over the old Sudra location. The interior is not too large and it shares an outside patio with the neighboring establishments. I ordered the Shoyu Paitan with the spicy bomb on the side. The flavor of the broth was nice and light. The chicken was served in a shredded format and had plenty of flavor. The spicy bomb was a good addition if you want a little more heat to your ramen. Overall, a pretty chill spot to enjoy a bowl of ramen while enjoying the neighborhood.
google avatar

Sebastian K.

Yelp
I was excited to see that a sushi/ramen place opened up in St. Johns, especially since I wasn't a huge fan of The Sudra (formerly located in this location.) However, my experience was pretty mediocre and not any better than the previous placeholder. I got the spicy salmon roll ($7) and my wife got the spicy ramen ($11). With tip this came out to $21, which for our portion size and quality wasn't a good, or even fair, deal. My sushi was the better of the two; the salmon tasted fresh and the presentation was good, but felt a tad expensive for what it was (eight small pieces, for a fish that thrives in this region.) My wife's ramen had decent broth, though was hardly spicy and the noodles tasted like something from a package. Serving size was pretty small for the price; for a similar price you could get a much better bowl at Boxer Ramen. The service was friendly, but I found it irritating that you're expected to tip when you bus your own table and set it up. The only thing they do beyond cooking the food is deliver it to your table; I felt a bit ripped off tipping over 20% and still expected to do the work of a server. I'm not coming back here unless they make some serious changes; work on their noodles and portion sizes mainly. Quite unfortunate when you consider this is an excellent location; right next to one of the best taprooms in the city and in the heart of St. Johns.

Yelp
I was in the St. John's area waiting around for someone, and had a few hours to spare. I found this small joint and decided to come in for a late lunch. It's an order-at-the-counter place, which is interesting, and you bus yourself. Thankfully, the meal didn't seem to reflect that. Bear in mind, I'm by no means a ramen expert, but it was a decently good dish. I ordered the Miso w/spice added. The broth was hearty, and warm (but not piping hot). The noodles were cooked perfectly, though I can't be sure of the level of freshness. It tasted good, which is the important thing. I think if I had to rank it among the ramen I've had in Portland, I would rank it 3 (so far, Kayo's takes the top spot). I also have to give an A for the presentation; I like when they put an effort into making the food aesthetically pleasing. The one complaint or question I had was why the pork was shredded and sweet?? I've never a bbq pulled pork-ish meat in ramen. Odd choice, but didn't detract from the overall dish. And there was a single fruit fly circling me the entire time. Also, this is just a personal preference, but I didn't like the way the egg was cooked. It was a bit tired? I don't know. Overall, good stop for lunch, and was surprisingly good for a place advertised as both sushi and ramen. I wish Yelp allowed more precise ratings, so I'll call this a 3.5-4 star review.
google avatar

Dessa S.

Yelp
I ordered a shoyu paitan and a spicy chasu ramen(I think). Broth tasted good, not too rich but it's flavorful. Noodles were cooked perfectly in my opinion. The yolk on the egg was a lil overcooked (I personally like em a lil runny). I would come back here again to try their sushi next time!
google avatar

Mailee V.

Yelp
***A tip to know when you enter the restaurant. You order first and pay before you pick a table to sit, you also serve yourself with water, napkins and utensils. Self-service style. Pros- I would come here for the sushi so delicious and beautifully plated. The chicken karaage was delicious and a good appetizer. The Mikasa roll was so delicious, I was speechless. The ramen was warm not steaming hot, which leaves my mouth puzzled. It didn't warm my chest and certainly didn't leave an impression. Cons- Parking just sucks, small place with not enough tables & seats. It gets crowded waiting to order. Only one bathroom. When it's crowded and you are trying to refill your cup with water. (Trying to not spill or drop the cup)
google avatar

Miranda H.

Yelp
Ramen was meh. Service was off-putting. Not sure if the positive reviewers here have ever had truly good ramen. This is not it. The pork belly was alright, noodles were ok. The spicy broth was underwhelming and had no depth. It was as if they just dumped a bunch of plain chili paste in at the end. It was our first time in and since every place operates differently in covid times we didn't know the deal on ordering, where to sit, serving, etc. And it wasn't obvious. The cashier at the front was very short and acted impatient when she had to explain. It wasn't super busy. On the positive side, our food came very quickly and the outside seating shares with other spots and has a nice vibe.
google avatar

Kopali S.

Yelp
Love this little spot when I'm passing through. Their negihama rolls, spider roll, and miso are my favorite. Staff is nice, service is quick, and they have both indoor and outdoor seating.

Melissa K.

Yelp
We were in the area visiting the University of Portland and stopped by Mikasa Ramen for an early dinner. Not only was the food excellent, especially the super veg ramen and the chicken karaage, the staff was super knowledgeable about accommodating our son's severe food allergies to dairy, eggs & peanuts. He chose the shoyu ramen with gluten free noodles and no egg, add charsiu. The charsiu was 3 big pieces and the meat just melted in your mouth. He is a picky ester and he said it was delicious! If we are ever in this area again, we will definitely be back! Thank you!
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
I have worked with Chef Francis before at another sushi restaurant and will trust him blind with my palate. Fabulous rolls really show how adept his is with his craft.
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
they use the b grade hamachi. the one that's the wrong color and doesn't really taste right. the spicy tuna isn't spicy. it's bland. the other ($19) roll I got was kind of a monstrosity --also bland and pretty hard to choke down.. I'd recommend a pass.

Kendrick T.

Yelp
Good sushi place, affordable and gives a cozy warm vibe inside. Took wife here on a date and she loved. Staff is friendly.
google avatar

Lynn N.

Yelp
I just discovered this ramen place in Portland area and enjoy it so much. My spicy chasu ramen was pretty yummy and the service are super friendly. We also ordered two sushi dishes and I really impressed about the Master pieces sushi. It's a great combination of pork belly, avocado top with scallop, cilantro, ginger honey sauce and shallot chip.
google avatar

Janna Z.

Yelp
I would not be lying if I said I went to Mikasa two days in a row. I had the veggie ramen with the chili bomb yesterday. It was so delicious, I came back today. Seriously generous portions, meaty mushrooms, firm tofu and a mind blowing bomb of chili spice! I am hooked! Tonight? Hot saki! Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a hot meal and friendly neighborhood atmosphere. My new addiction.
google avatar

Phu N.

Yelp
Gozilla is a new on the menu. It very crunchy and the sauce make the sushi very tasty. Spicy chasu is hit a spot for cold day after pumpkin patch
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
I really want you to be amazing, in my opinion, you aren't there yet. First time I tried to get in, over an hour before your posted time to close, doors open, lights on, but you refuse my business and say you're closed. Second time, I'm excited to check out the menu and order...the man working the iPad was not warm or friendly, rather awkward or tired of being there, not sure. I order 6 pieces of sashimi. Visually the fish looked like it was going to be great but it was put atop really warm rice resulting in warm fish. The fish didn't taste fresh either. Your sushi is currently over priced for what you are offering and how you offer it. Try a place called Sushi Mazi in the SE. I will give you one more chance, I hear the ramen is good, maybe I caught you on a bad day.
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
just now Came in on a whim to get some sushi and got some ramen instead. The ramen here is delicious, I have eaten all over Portland and Beaverton and the ramen here compares to some of the best in the city. I got the spicy ramen with pork belly and it really impressed me. I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu. I felt the price from the ramen was good, and I was totally full from my ramen bowl. I am super happy Mikasa is here in St John's I will absolutely tell all my friends and neighbors about this place. Mikasa deserves the support of the neighborhood because they make a great product.
google avatar

Jacquelyn F.

Yelp
Holy crap. The veggie ramen is PHENOMENAL. They also have fantastic sushi. Also very fast service and friendly staff.
google avatar

Jeane C.

Yelp
Mikasa had terrible service and moody employees. Millennials that were obviously way to cool to care about customer service. The young chef was bossing the other employees in an embarrassing tone. After yesterday we will NEVER go back. Learn how to train and treat people.
google avatar

Ryan O.

Yelp
Just got done with the soft opening. Well worth the wait. Ramen was probably one of the best that I have had in a long time. Ingredients were super fresh, broth was amazing. Friend that had sushi immediately said "We're coming back here, right?" Other friend that had the pole went and ordered a roll, wait be damned. I predict good things for this place!
google avatar

carmen k.

Yelp
I had the Shoya Ramen and my husband had the miso ramen and we split a mikasa roll. Everything was sooooo good. The broth in both ramens were flavorful.
google avatar

Colleen B.

Yelp
We love Mikasa for sushi on Friday nights. Their rolls are killer and not crazy expensive. Best sushi in NoPo!
google avatar

Carrie K.

Yelp
Sweet place! We wanted to try a new sushi spot in NOPO. We only had sushi but was had serious ramen envy so it will be what I order next time. It's a counter order kinda place which I don't love but honestly the menu is compact and simple so people are quick. We loved the mother of dragons roll and scorpion roll. My son has deemed the mother of dragon roll his new favorite! Edamame had a good amount of salt flake which I loved!!! A cute little spot that we will be happy to visit again.
