I reached out to Mikata to arrange a wedding reception dinner for my friends. We’re a casual group that doesn’t dine at upscale places, but we wanted to celebrate this special occasion somewhere nice. We were told we could book the entire upstairs area for privacy and agreed to a deposit and a minimum spend, which we gladly complied with.
On the night of the dinner, our waiter was incredibly friendly and attentive, setting a great tone for the evening. The bride and groom were in awe since we don’t typically do upscale outings. Everything seemed perfect—until, shortly after our appetizers arrived, another party of 5-6 was brought upstairs and seated, despite our understanding that we had exclusive use of the space.
Additionally, we were promised side tables to display the couple’s cake and photos, but midway through the meal, we were asked if one of those tables could be taken away, making it feel like our reservation, deposit, and minimum spend didn’t hold much weight.
Service issues continued when the groom’s Bento Box never arrived. After 1.5 hours, we had to ask to cancel it, as most of the guests had already finished eating. When I raised these concerns with the manager, Brian, he was apologetic and did make an effort to adjust the bill slightly. He also mentioned that the other party seated upstairs were essentially VIP—aka more important than us.
Despite these issues, the food and drinks were phenomenal—compliments to the chefs and bartenders. Our waiter was great throughout the night, and we still tipped him well. While the evening didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped, the couple still enjoyed themselves. I really want to give Mikata a 3.5 star review, but considering the experience, I rounded down.
