Where to Eat at Northeastern University | Eater Boston

"Craving a morning donut or bagel? Mike’s has you covered, offering an array of breakfast items at an affordable price. Service is fast, and the breakfast sandwiches come with an optional hash brown inside. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available, and a newsstand inside sells an assortment of national, regional and neighborhood newspapers to mull over while drinking a cup of joe." - Maya Homan

Boston’s Best Doughnuts | Eater Boston

"Mike’s Donuts has been a staple of Mission Hill since the 1950s. A fresh, hot honey dipped from Mike’s is tough to beat, citywide. Bonus: Whenever you order multiple doughnuts, Mike’s employees include a couple of doughnut holes on the house." - Terrence Doyle

Best Boston-Area Delivery and Takeout, Spring/Summer 2020 | Eater Boston

"Hipster doughnut shops are fine (and can even be transcendent), but I don’t always need a doughnut to be the size of a small birthday cake because sometimes I want to eat three doughnuts, not half of one doughnut. I also don’t need rocket fuel in place of coffee. Mike’s Donuts on Mission Hill makes normal-sized doughnuts, and the coffee is weak-ish, which is what I want when I’m eating doughnuts — if heart palpitations are inevitable (and they are when consuming fatty, fried pastries), I don’t need to exacerbate them with a venti quadruple red-eye lattecino. Mike’s is basically Dunkin’ Donuts but good. It’s a tight space, so we’ve limited our trips in the era of COVID-19. But I’m glad it’s still open and there whenever I crave an unfussy, excellent doughnut or three. —TBD Currently offering takeout. Order: (617) 427-6828" - Terrence Doyle

Google
I frequent Mike's 2-3x a month. Staff is quick and efficient behind the counter. I've always been a fan of the bacon, egg and cheese with a hash brown on a croissant but have recently enjoyed their donuts. Glazed or buttermilk are my go to but maple bacon was a fun mix up. Also tried the strawberry smoothie for the first time and loved it. (fyi it's big enough to share!) My only reason for 4 stars is because the egg isn't freshly cooked (similar to Dunkin egg) and the hash brown is too small for the croissant. I would just order a second hash brown but for an extra $1.75 it's not worth it. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area!

Delicious coffee, donuts. Reasonable price. Nice seating + view

Google
Really liked this place. Tried a donut and hashbrowns, both pretty good. Prices decent, very friendly ladies working there.

Karen Morales

Google
Such a great establishment and both ladies are the friendliest ! I come here with the kiddos before school and they always have a smile , talk to you, ask how things are. I always appreciate friendly smiles in the morning. And the food is great, best hot chocolate ,donuts and breakfast sandwiches. Recommend 10/10

Google
The Best Donuts since I can remember! I’ve been going to Mikes since I was a young girl and I have yet not have had a Honey Dip (Glazed) Donut like Mikes!

Garrett Hauck

Google
Great service, awsome sandwiches. Best donuts in town!!! Reasonably price and way better than dunkin ! Keep up the great work If you love a clasic glazed donut must try.

Sofia Budimlic

Google
great prices considering the donuts are huge, definitely get the bang for your buck and the workers are super nice

Google
I came to Boston for a trip, and all three days came here for breakfast. They were very nice to us and the bagel with hash brown is super good

Kayla J.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast sandwiches. Cheap and fast-while also tasting by pretty good. Nothing special but gets the job done. Not somewhere you go to if you're looking for a latte. Pretty sure my mocha was just drip coffee with a pump of chocolate sauce.

Yelp
Once you make it past the ordering stage, this place is an absolute gem. The women working the counter were very nice, and they kept repeating orders as it got busy to ensure they got everybody's right. The food is 1000% nourishment for the soul with just the right amount of greasiness to the hashbrown and everything cooked perfectly. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese with hashbrown on a croissant and was the happiest person eating it. The place is fairly small, but there is ample seating given that most people ordered takeout. Excellent breakfast spot!

Yelp
We arrived around noon on a Saturday and while we know it's a bit on the later side, we were disappointed to see they were pretty much cleared out. I thought it would have been stocked more similarly to their pastry shops, but it was vastly different. The woman with the short hair behind the counter wasn't very friendly, bordering on rude. Especially in comparison to the other woman with the blond hair who was more pleasant. We grabbed the last cinnamon roll, 2 glazed donuts, an egg with cheese on a croissant and a cold brew. The cold brew was $6, seems kinda steep. The glazed so nuts were good, I'd definitely get them again. But it was downhill from there. Coffee was mediocre, the cinnamon bun tasted like the ones you can get at a NYC food truck. The croissant was practically burnt (I didn't ask for hit to be toasted), and the egg was seemingly pre-made a la Dunkin. That was kind of a bummer because the croissant looked good on the shelf.

Yelp
Friendly staff, lots of regulars come here, I popped in because I wanted a fresh glazed donut and a small hot coffee. Perfect treat on a chilly April weekend afternoon. Prices are very reasonable. I will be back!

William G.

Yelp
The two women behind the counter were quite rude, I ordered a small coffee and a glazed donut and they gave a lot of attitude, seemingly upset about my order. They handed me my donut and then dispensed the coffee from a large carafe and microwaved it in the paper cup. This was alarming, as the cup is not a microwaveable cup, they melted plastic into my coffee, and how old is the coffee that it needed to be microwaved? Needless to say the coffee was awful. Two stars because the donut was mediocre and not awful. Additionally the table I sat at was filthy despite the place being empty.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Solid local spot. The prices are very reasonable. The service is quick and kind. There's space to sit and read the Globe. A local institution.
google avatar

Ciaran W.

Yelp
Really dope place, their donuts are pretty good especially the Boston kreme, but the bagels I get there are amazing. It also has an authentic feel to it which makes me wanna come back here rather than somewhere like Dunkin

AnnMarie D.

Yelp
I ordered a dozen of Donuts to bring to work and Ice coffee, total $ 19.00. To Make matters worse we opened the box and 10 Donuts. Cheap ass people!!
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
Donuts were blah, the two behind the counter had the personality of a wet mop and the place was dinghy. I always try to find a local bakery when I visit to find my new favorite place instead of a Dunkin'.

J D.

Yelp
The plain glazed are the best. They are pretty sweet and I personally wish there was a little less glaze but I think most people would find that part perfect. The dough is light and tastes fresh - it tastes like fried dough. The boston creme is great. I drive from a town over to get these bc there are none others this good around. Yummy!

Yelp
I love Mike's donuts. I always stop by before I come to work or whenever I'm in the area. The staff is super friendly and love both of the locations at forest hills and here. They are super convenient and easily accessible by the train. The food is very good and so are the drinks. You can't go wrong. I would recommend trying out their donuts, they are huge in comparison to another donut shops and taste great.
google avatar

Marissa R.

Yelp
We were looking for an old fashioned donut shop & found Mike's on Yelp. We got a cinnamon bun, chocolate sprinkle, & regular glazed. The cinnamon bun & chocolate sprinkle were standard, but the glazed was a bit sweaty with condensation. Service was fast & friendly, but the inside of the building was a bit buggy with little flies. Parking is limited (mission hill residents only). Overall the donuts were pretty average; I might come here if I lived closer but it wasn't worth the drive for us.

Megan C.

Yelp
really gross coffee and donuts. That day staff was rude. Has a popular following so wanted to like this place

Yelp
What a cute little family owned gem we found. They were so sweet and welcoming - it just felt great to support a family owned business. We ended up ordering 6 glazed donuts. They were huge! Definitely worth the price!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little neighborhood donut spot, there's usually a small line on the weekend but I had no problem going in the morning on a weekday. The staff are nice and the shop is exactly what you would expect of a neighborhood donut place -- cute, but nothing extravagant. The donuts are $1.40 each and they are delicious. I ordered a jelly donut which was very tasty and definitely seemed like they either made the jam from scratch or used a high quality raspberry jam. Would recommend stopping by if you're craving a sweet treat in the morning. Overall, a great stop in Mission Hill!
google avatar

Yelp
Pros: -Freshest dough in the city. Seriously, it's SO soft it deflates in your hands. -The staff here continue to be awesome. I was buying a dozen donuts ($10.99) with a $10 giftcard and a credit card. They must now have a credit card minimum because the woman assisting me told me she couldn't charge the $0.99, so she said I could just pay it next time. -Jelly is a frightening red color, which is actually a Pro because jelly donuts are the worst and this donut self-signals that you should steer clear. Cons: -Credit card minimum (not sure if $3 or $5) -Skimpy with the chocolate frosting
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, Mike's isn't that much better than Dunkins. I've tried several donuts here, including the plain glazed, jelly, and chocolate glazed, and I haven't been impressed by any of them. The yeast dough is nice and fluffy, but it's often made soggy by the glaze. The chocolate glazed was generally uninteresting, not super chocolatey, and lacking in a nice outer crisp. I have come at a few different times, and even at 8:30am they were out of many flavors. I appreciate that they are priced appropriately, though, especially compared to most donuts in Boston. Three stars because nothing was terrible and it makes more sense to support Mike's than big chains like Dunkins.
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
I'm not sure which of the ladies is the owner (or maybe co-owners?) but they're both awesome. Just the sweetest ladies and if you're lucky they might even give you a free donut! Probably my favorite breakfast sandwich in Boston, not some super fancy place, just a really damn good bacon egg and cheese!
google avatar

Venessa M.

Yelp
Really tasty and fresh glazed donut. And I love that the price was great. The selection was slim since it was after noon. However I'll be back at an earlier time so that I can see the full variety of their donuts.
google avatar

Yelp
I'd say this place is probably on the same level as Dunkin's in terms of both quality and price. I came here on my own on a Sunday afternoon for some pre-museum fuel. Many of the flavors were already out, but I grabbed the very last glazed donut (yay!). Service was pretty decent, nothing spectacular. They have all the "classic" donut flavors, and not much other unique donut flavors that are all the rage these days. Coupled with the interior though, it's kind of nostalgic--it has that 1990's look and feel. Reminds me of my neighborhood's local donut shop I used to go as a kid. It's comforting! There is lots of seating, but most people take their food to go. For around a buck a donut, you can't really complain. The donut was pretty standard, nothing really special; it doesn't really differ much to a Dunkin Donut glazed donut to me (which is not anything negative because I'm a loyal Dunkin's customer LOL). I guess I was just expecting more. However, I'd choose this place over Dunkin's just because I want to support a local business. Still have yet to try their coffee! Would come again if ever in the area.
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
This place was just ok for me. I came for the donuts but also picked up a tuna sandwich. The tuna turned out to be better then the donut & I'm not sure how to feel about that. I did go towards lunch so perhaps the donuts are much better in the morning. Overall I'm not sure I would make this a destination but try at your preference.

Yelp
So glad I decided to randomly pop in here the other day - the donuts and breakfast sandwiches are out of this world! The donuts are so sweet and cakey, and the breakfast sandwich that I got tasted so fresh and delicious. The sweet woman at the cashier asked if I wanted hash browns and I mistakenly thought she meant on the side, so when they came on the sandwich itself I was surprised, but it was better than I could have imagined. So tasty!

Yelp
I have been meaning to come here ever since I've lived on the Hill. I finally got the chance! It could be a little hidden since there's construction going on on Tremont Street. My go-to donut is the chocolate glazed, however when I came to Mike's, they only had the glazed donut and the old-fashioned donut, therefore my choices were narrowed by a lot. I only wanted to try a donut, but they have a $3 minimum for card. I had to buy something else, so I saw the breakfast sandwich was $3. I got a croissant with sausage, egg, and cheese and I have to say it was the best decision I made that day!! I also got the donut because why not. For 99 cents, that glazed donut was perfectly glazed and not too sweet. It was also a pretty big donut and it was super soft! I highly recommend coming here because it's quick and convenient. Also the prices here are budget friendly for the college students who live around the area. I would rather come here than Dunkin' Donuts.
google avatar

Anh H.

Yelp
I got a glazed donut and bacon, egg and cheese sandwich with hashbrowns stuffed inside from here. The prices are right and the food is good! The glazed donut is large and fluffy (not dense and cake-like). The quality of food is definitely better than Dunkin' Donuts and I'd rather support a small business, so I see myself being a regular customer here. The nice lady behind the cash register also threw in two free donut holes into my order, which was a nice surprise!

Jack G.

Yelp
After walking around aimlessly in the Mission Hill/Brigham Circle area I found this gem. Old school no frills shop. Delicious donuts and really good regular coffee. I order a glazed and a chocolate cake. I received a complimentary donut hole of each(I always called them munchkins, cause that's what they are called in lesser donut shops) to my surprise. Not in the area too often, but when I am I'll definitely be back.

Lynn C.

Yelp
The best people and the best breakfast sandwich - bacon egg and cheese on a croissant. It's perfect. The coffee is also excellent. And again, the people - so kind.
google avatar

Brooke A.

Yelp
I was in the area after an early morning hair appointment and was craving coffee. I yelped places nearby (what else would I use lol) and this donut shop popped up first on the list. I haven't had a donut in Boston this whole pandemic so I thought... HECK YES I'm getting a coffee AND A DONUT. When I walked in, 2 ladies were tidying up the place but when they saw me, they quickly ran to the register. They were both SO SWEET, just as sweet as the pastries they sell! I ordered a small coffee, then realized after I didn't say black, but let me tell you, that creamy perfectly sweetened coffee was AMAZING. I chose to get the last Boston Cream that was left. I was pleasantly surprised at how soft and fluffy the donut was, filled with delicious cream and topped with rich chocolate! I'll for sure be back when I'm in the area for sweet donuts, coffee, and staff!
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
I've passed this place many times, but stopped in for the first time for Sunday breakfast. I ordered the bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant and a small coffee with cream and sugar. The prices were reasonable and the woman behind the counter was very sweet. When I got my food, I was pleasantly surprised - the sandwich was HUGE and tasty, though a little on the salty side. Coffee was pretty standard, though next time I might go light on the sugar. Overall, a good place to know about next time I need a quick and filling breakfast.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Most reviews say that it's comparable to dunkin which is an accurate description. I got a jelly donut and was disappointed to find about a teaspoon of jelly and mainly dough. Besides that, the texture and taste of the donut was overall good. However, when I get a jelly donut I expect it to be oozing with jelly so I was overall unsatisfied.
google avatar

Laurel G.

Yelp
Goooood donuts AND egg sandwiches Nice pink uniforms Coffee is sponsored by Claritin so I haven't sneezed yet Always has good news station on TV Open during snow storms Wet floor sign available No bathroom visible
google avatar

Nicky E.

Yelp
Cute little spot in Mission Hill with lots of regulars stopping in. I went around 1pm and the doughnuts were DECIMATED. I did manage to get a glazed donut and a small coffee. The coffee was surprisingly good (I think I was expecting something on par with a convenient store - it was much much better) and the donut was sweet and light - but not overwhelmingly sweet. Perfect for an afternoon pick me up. While I was reading and noshing, students and nearby residents stopped in to get warm and take in a sweet or too - it had a great wholesome neighborhood vibe - and the woman behind the counter had the best name (Esmerelda!). I'd come back if I lived in the area, but I'll probably stick with Union Square Donuts for future doughnut endeavors.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
I love Mike's Donuts!! These doughy, fluffy donuts are my favorite hands down and I wasn't an avid donut-eater until I moved near Mike's and now I go there all the time. Their coffee, donut holes, smoothies, and croissant sandwiches are also delicious and all reasonably priced, and the staff is always so friendly! I will always choose Mike's over Dunkin across the street because I am glad to support a local business with great food, prices, and service.
google avatar

Lucy L.

Yelp
Stumbled by this place and I had to satisfy my cravings for donuts! Five munchkins were about $1.50. The texture of the donuts were more of a cake like texture. I wish they had labels underneath the donuts so I knew what flavors they had. The people were incredibly friendly and great value for the donuts. :)
google avatar

Yelp
We wanted a quick breakfast before we had to go to the airport. This place was walking distance from the house we are staying at. Walking in, the place is smaller and has the anterior of what looks like a Dunkin' Donuts. The food is about the same. We had glazed donuts which were decent. I would prefer the hot and ready krispy creme or a more local, homemade feel kind of donut. We had iced coffee which was alright. The biggest issue I had was when we were in line. We walked up, was not greeted. The cashier was still helping the person in front of us and also trying to take our order instead of waiting a few seconds. We said "we want these two orange ju--" and before we could finish she was like "anything else??? Anything else?" Rushing us through. We ordered quickly, "two donuts and two iced coffees" and she threw them in the bag, and before they had even taken our money the cashier was yelling behind us getting orders from the other customers. I wish this had been more homely and the cashiers took at least a few more seconds with everyone.
google avatar

Arnold H.

Yelp
Average donuts. 1.20 a piece. Good price. No need to rush over. Blackbird or Kane's is the better option but a bit pricier.
google avatar

Cherie C.

Yelp
I've had some time to calm down, and in the end this place gets 4 stars for doughnuts only. Good glazed donuts, fresh made and yummy. For the rest, forget it. We saw the web site and expected breakfast. Instead we go microwaved food served on bad bagels and a microwaved spinach and cheese 'croissant.' Being served microwaved food in a restaurant is a HUGE pet peeve for me. I simply refuse to eat it. My boyfriend ate his food, I had a couple of bites of donut, and we moved on. I waited to eat somewhere else.
google avatar

Gerardo R.

Yelp
This location is a short walk down Tremont St. once you exit the Roxbury Crossing T station. Mike's is located across the street from the Catholic Cathedral (maybe not directly across from the church but on that side of the street nearby). The inside is small with some tables & chairs. They offer sandwiches, coffee, muffins, and donuts. The dozen donuts are the best deal. The glazed donuts are double-dipped, soft, warm, and smell wonderfully. I believe now a box of 12 donuts costs about $9 or $10 but is worth it! I highly recommend this place. They accept cash or cards.

Caroline R.

Yelp
Fresh donuts every time I've been there. They are cakey but heavy donuts. I recommend them. The price for one is $1.20 as of 3/2019. I had the chocolate glazed and coconut . The small coffee is $1.95
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
Searching for a place to grab a quick bite while in the area. I'm so happy I found Mike's Donuts. The cutest older ladies working the counter. Sisters maybe? So nice! I ordered the steak, egg and cheese on an English muffin and she threw in a couple of donut holes with it. Yay! Oh and I bought my new Mikes coffee mug big enough to fit my home brew of 2 K cups. $2.50 refills with my mug when I come back and I definitely will come back. Sandwich was a perfect blend of salty, cheesy greasy goodness. Donut holes we sweet balls of heaven. No seriously their food is worth a try.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches. Friendly staff and decent seating for a quick breakfast

Yelp
amazing for all the right reasons- good food, good service and especially great opening hours- i always get a donut and a coffee in the morning, and then go on to watch the sunrise- couldn't be better

Joseph P.

Yelp
Great service delicious donuts, munchkins, sandwiches always stock up when I visit. Iced coffee is always consistently good it's worth a longer walk to than Dunkin' Donuts sometimes

Allen W.

Yelp
I got a sausage egg and cheese with a coffee and the lady put two free doughnut holes in my bag without telling me. That might be the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.
google avatar

Roshunda S.

Yelp
The donuts were pretty good, but the service wasn't so great, they seemed annoyed about me wanting to select my own dozen instead letting them select for me.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
My favorite thing about Mike's: the ever-present smell of freshly-made donuts coming through my windows. My second favorite thing about Mike's: the delicious donuts in my tummy. My least favorite thing about Mike's: they don't make their own bagels, and instead use frozen ones. What the shit? -1 star for that. ***Edit: I went in yesterday, and it seems they're making their own bagels now. I had one, and it was delicious. Om nom nom.*** ***Edit to the edit: I've started running, and after my late-night/early-morning run (at about 5am) I stop by here for a Gatorade and glazed donut (I'm clearly not running for health reasons). I've discovered that the homemade bagels in the previous edit were a tease, they're back to the frozen ones. Lame. But Bruce, the guy that runs the place, is really nice. The end.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Oh Mike's...sweet, delicious Mike's. I miss you so very very much. I used to live in the immediate vicinity of this haven of fresh-baked gooey greatness, but I have moved. Fresh donuts are Delicious! The neighborly atmosphere is completely heart-warming. Mike's is a place where people gather and hang out, not just jostle in line and scowl at one another. They also donate a lot of free donuts to local charitable events and such. Man, it was just a great place. I go there every time I'm in the neighborhood. And for early birds, they open at 4:30am for that morning coffee.
google avatar

Br E.

Yelp
The real reason I love working at HSPH: the donuts at the talks and seminars. They're not from Dunkin...or from Krispy Kreme...they're 100% Mike's. Best donuts around. They should come out with the fat free kind that still taste like heaven. I'll see if they could research that in the Dept of Nutrition...
google avatar

T E.

Yelp
3 stars for being independent (ie. not Dunkin) and for serving a pretty big donut. But really this place feels like it's slowly dying and just waiting for the DD franchise offer. The two donuts I've had from here haven't really been upto much apart from having appreciable mass/volume. Coffee was okay but I didn't feel much loved for the staff, the decor or the atmosphere. A redeeming feature is being opposite the Basilica and having a decent view from the windows. If you walk up here from Longwood then you've earned yourself a glazed. Well done you.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
A friend from overseas came to stay with us for a week, so that she could attend a seminar at the Harvard School of Public Health. I accompanied her into town a few times to help her find her way, and we left early to avoid some of the traffic. We had time to spare on three different mornings, and were lucky enough to discover Mike's. We loved the doughnuts, and the coffee was very good, to say the least. I also very much enjoyed my breakfast sandwich on one of their fresh croissants. Yum. I don't get over to Mission Hill very often, but the next time I'm there in the morning, I'll surely be hitting Mike's!
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
Wow. Really Alexis? You have lived in this area for how long? And this is your first time going to Mike's? You should be ashamed. Oh, believe me I am. I missed out on countless days of donut eating so believe me I'm punished enough. I went to vote today and decided to treat myself to a donut breakfast for getting up extra early. I got a glazed and a Boston Creme. OMFG. First of all NO ONE IN THESE REVIEWS MENTIONS HOW BIG THESE DONUTS ARE!! Um I mean I have definitely eaten 2 Dunkin Donuts in one sitting but these I could barely finish one. I have half of the cakey delicious glazed. Which wasn't overly sweet and super fluffy. I then maybe ate a third of this GIANT Boston Creme. I mean really people the amount of custard in this thing should be illegal. It was super delicious. The chocolate topping was real chocolate- no sugary topping dyed brown. Dunkin who?
