The U.S. Wine Industry Is at the Mercy of Climate Change. Hybrid Grapes Can Help. | Eater

"This small, 12-acre winery partnered with J. Stephen Casscles to produce a dedicated line of hybrid wines aimed at conserving historic American-European crosses; the operation currently makes roughly 900 gallons a year from more than 100 varietals and will sell about 375 cases this year. The project emphasizes sustainable viticulture—selecting grapes that need fewer chemical inputs, protect soil health, and suit local climates—and the team is planting more of certain hybrids to increase future production while donating local varieties to botanical gardens and arboretums for education and preservation." - Julia Fine

My friend brought me here for a surprise birthday brunch and Kristin took such good care of us. She had great recommendations and a wonderful enthusiasm for food and grapes/wine. Highly recommend a stop by to enjoy, wine/view/food.

Where to begin? My daughter and son-in-law’s wedding was perfect. Mina’s attention to detail is second to none. She ensured that the bride and groom had everything they wanted and more. The venue is beautiful, the staff is top notch and everything that comes out of Chef David’s kitchen to delicious! I don’t know why anyone would want to have their wedding anywhere else!

Google
We recently celebrated my son and three of his closest friends graduation at Milea’s Clubhouse and I can’t imagine a more perfect venue! The entire experience from planning to the final toast, was exceptional and seamless. We’ve been going to Milea for the past four years and it has always been our favorite go-to place when visiting the Hudson area. The setting is stunning, the atmosphere warm and welcoming and the service top-tier. A very special shoutout to Mina, who went above and beyond (as she always does) to make sure everything was flawless. If you’re looking for a venue that delivers beauty, service and hospitality- look no further!

Google
10/10 This place over delivers at every point. The view is spectacular, the wines are superb, the food is delicious, and the service FANTASTIC!! Special shout out to Marie our guide/server who is fabulous!!! Milea wont be a Hudson Valley’s best kept secret for long. P.S. Do yourself a favor and have a glass of the NV Hudson Valley Vineyards Right Bank Brut Cuvée. It’s a shame that we have to call this sparkling wine, because it easily rivals the best from the Champagne region.

Google
I’ve been a fan ever since my first visit over 2 years ago. Let me explain. The Hudson Valley has a fair amount of wineries, but Milea is by far the best in wine, hospitality, food, views, friendliness of staff and membership experience. The wine is superb and it’s given me a deeper appreciation for NY winemaking and the grapes that thrive here. Having an executive chef on staff makes the experience of being on the property even more decadent with seasonal menu offerings and curated dinners featuring collaborations with other chefs and local farms. But I think it’s the attention to little details that I love the most. (I’m looking at you house-made citrus infused olives … and compostable cutlery … and how Mina remembered my name on my second visit … and how Russ always finds the most unique and interesting musicians for winery events) And as with all endeavors that are truly worthwhile, there is no shortage of effort from anyone the winery employs. Every guest feels welcome and appreciated and every experiential detail of being at the winery is well-conceived and executed. I bring my friends here AND I’ve made new friends here. Milea is a very special place <3

Wow! What a delightful surprise. On our way back to CT from Hudson NY we stopped at Milea on a whim. What an amazing experience and treat! Our guide Kristin was delightful. She was so lovely and incredibly knowledgeable as we were guided through our tasting. It was truly an experience. Milea is a notch above! We can’t wait to return for another experience! Thank you Kristin!

Google
The best winery in NY!! We visited last fall and had an amazing experience. Definitely recommend for breathtaking foliage and views. The hospitality is unmatched, from the charismatic GM to the world-class culinary and hospitality team. I’ve never felt more welcomed and truly cared for at a winery. The wines are impressive and highly rated as well. For the top-tier quality, the prices are great. We also stayed at The Spencer House, which made us feel right at home. Can’t wait to visit again. Sipping the wines at home brings back the amazing memories!

Yelp
Great wine, food and atmosphere. Jenny was awesome, friendly and knowledgeable. 2 thumbs up!

Yelp
I met a friend to try out the wines. I got the wine samplers and they're very good. It's mid April so the grounds are not spring green yet but I can imagine awesome views. They have great sitting areas with beautiful views to catch up with friends over wine. And you can bring the pups which is a great! The menu is very limited and expensive but tastes good. I don't think you can bring your own snacks which is a bit of a bummer. The staff is knowledgeable and so very friendly.

Yelp
Loved our tasting here at Milea Estates! I'm not an avid wine drinker at all, but when I find a drinkable wine, I'm super happy. The staff here were all so nice and helpful. We came for lunch and had a few plates from the lunch menu- gochujang Korean fried chicken and pepperoni and honey pizzette- so delicious!!

Yelp
Not a wine snob, but I've tasted plenty of different wines & have visited a few vineyards. I'll start off with the views: they're absolutely beautiful. Ask to be seated outside and you definitely won't regret it. The seating arrangement makes you feel as if you're on a cliff overlooking the mountains and it's breathtaking. If you're a party of two, there are some cute seats right by the edge where you get the best, unobstructed view. I tried the prefix wine tasting set + an additional glass of red wine (can't remember the name) and to my disappointment, all of the wine kind of tasted the same. The tasting set was a mixture of white/rose/red, and flavor profiles amongst all of them fell flat. None had a strong flavor or bite, and the wines were thin/watered down it felt like (and again, I am not an expert.) The servers were all sweet, explaining the wine to the best of their ability and providing their own personal input, straying away from the script they were told to stick to when discussing flavors. The outdoor area does seem slightly understaffed, with only 2-3 waitresses handling over 20 groups of guests needing refills on tastings and uncorking. I would come for the views + possibly the small bites, since the majority of tables had ordered food and it smelled amazing!

Yelp
Lovely winery! My partner and I tried a variety of their wines through the wine flight. All of them were delicious. The space is quite gorgeous, it was really nice to sip a glass on the Adirondack chairs outside with the gorgeous view.

Yelp
Beautiful day, delicious wine, appetizers super yummy! I need a barrel of those rosemary olives

Yelp
I love this vineyard. First of all, it is absolutely gorgeous. It is perched on a hill overlooking the vineyard with the mountains in the background. Can't beat the view. Second, the wine is fantastic. They are really innovative and creative and think a lot about what works in the Hudson Valley, and they deliver. Rose, sparkling, red, and whites are all great! Third, the food is wonderful. Service is top-notch. They have an excellent chef who puts out delicious small plates. Everything we have tried is awesome. They have a lot of special events, including dinners in the vineyard. I haven't been to one yet, but it is high on my list. Note that this place gets very busy so make a reservation or call ahead to be sure to snag a table inside or out. Cheers!

Yelp
View was spectacular, Marie was friendly, knowledgeable, and just a gem, and the wine was so refreshing on a hot summer's day.

Yelp
My wife and I traveled two hours from Southwick, Massachusetts to celebrate my birthday. Let's just say this is an amazing winery with very breathtaking views of the vines below the wine was excellent. The service was personal and intimate, and the wines are amazing. We had a very good time we even ordered appetizers from their menu. Greenwood highly recommend this place and we will be back Thank you for the wonderful time

Yelp
My girls and I had a wonderful time at Milea. The estate is beautiful and the service top notch. Our server, Devin, Was energetic, Friendly, and knowledgeable about the wines. All of the wines in our tasting were delicious, and I bought two bottles of each!! We also enjoyed our charcuterie, board and squash hummus. This place should be on your to do list if you're in the area and like wine. I really enjoyed their wines and plan on picking them up again.

Yelp
Food is excellent. Small plates. We (6 of us) shared several plates and we loved them all. Especially liked the Brussels sprouts, Korean bao buns and the olives. Gin and tonic was weak in both flavor and alcohol. The kolsch beer was good and cold. Two of us did tastings and I had glass of the 2021 farmhouse BDX red blend and bought a bottle for home. Very nice. Tasting was cuvée. Very well received. 2022 rose also liked. 2022 reserve Chardonnay was great and light and not too oaky. Lovely surroundings inside and out. Please stop by if in the area. Make a reservation. They fill up quickly.

Yelp
Great wine but terrific service and explanation from Ben. He is great! We bought 3 bottles since it was soooo good

Yelp
Milea Estate Vineyard is one of the most amazing places to visit for any occasion. The food is delicious, very unique and flavorful! The chicken appetizer and arancini just melt in your mouth! Ben is such an amazing wine guide, always ready to answer any questions about the wines or food. The atmosphere at Milea is relaxing and peaceful, it's all an year round place to visit - the tasting room is large and can accommodate many people at once all while feeling a sense of intimacy at the same time. The warmer months are beautiful sitting out on the patio enjoying the scenery. Every aspect is Milea is tasteful and enjoyable. The wine is out of this world - every single one. By far one of our favorite places to visit multiple times a year.

Yelp
Excellent view of their estate. Good selection of wine and tasty. Seated and orders taken in a reasonable amount of time. I appreciated the unique bites they offered on the menu. Interior is tastefully decorated. I would definitely return again.

Yelp
Wonderful setting and friendly, knowledgeable service! Some of the best wine in New York State.

Yelp
This spot is absolutely beautiful! I'm so happy I was able to check it out. It's very spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating overlooks the expansive vineyard below. There's a photobooth with cute photo options and some great snacks for sale at the front desk. I got the chocolates, which were amazing! The staff was very kind and welcoming, and seated us immediately. Our server was also very kind and knowledgeable about the wines. We were able to try a sample of two unreleased wines, which were fantastic! We ended up ordering three bottles of wine - Papa Joe White, 2022 Rose, and 2022 Vidal Blanc. The wines were wonderful and were all very light and perfect for summer. Papa Joe White is a blend of apricot, guava, and papaya. The 2022 Rose is light and is a blend of watermelon, cherry, and orange blossom, and the 2022 Vidal Blanc had lemon and pineapple. They have food options as well - I recommend the White Bean Hummus, which comes with pita bread and is delicious! Overall, this is a great spot that's perfect for a relaxing day.

Yelp
My first winery experience and it was very fun. We were a party of 6 and we did the toured wine tasting. We tasted 7 different wines (mix of red and white) with small bites to pair with each wine. We learned a lot about Milea wines on how they are made and different types of grapes used and grown. Bruce was very knowledgeable and passionate about wine making. We ordered everything on the menu to try. My favor was the Korean fried chicken and the Brussels sprouts. Both of these dishes were delicious. I was not a big fan of the truffle burrata toast. After the dine and wine we went to Bruce's lab to see the wine making in action. We also tasted a few wine that has not been filtered yet and wine that is being aged in barrels. Staffs were also very attentive and accommodating to our special needs and food allergies. It snowed when we came so we stayed indoors for the most part. Loved their fireplace which made the place very cozy.

Amanda M.

Yelp
The view is beautiful, staff is extremly pleasant/informative! And, the wine is amazing! Love spending my Sundays here any season of the year!

Sally M.

Yelp
We had a beautiful experience here at Milea on a beautiful day and we were lucky to have Kristin as our server. Kristin was so attentive and so friendly!! Excellent!!

Alia R.

Yelp
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here and Kristin was absolutely amazing! She was so friendly, knowledgable, made us feel very welcome and like a personal friend. We loved the wine tasting and it was a beautiful location to celebrate. Will definitely come back and of course request Kristin.

James B.

Yelp
Fantastic wine, excellent service and wonderful views. Best winery in the Hudson Valley region!!!

Linda O.

Yelp
The wine is amazing. I went there for a tasting on my birthday with my daughter and became a wine club member, that is how much I liked it. I have only eaten there once and it was awesome, very upscale. I cannot wait until we can sit on the patio because the view is awesome!

Yelp
I am originally from Northern California. I have quaffed a lot of wine from around the world. I live in Millbrook, New York which has a pretty good wine operation in the Millbrook Vineyards. They have been around quite a long time and are well known. Their reserve cabernet franc is their specialty. It was quite by accident that I discovered Milea Vineyards which is almost as close to where I live as is the Millbrook Vineyards. I am a huge fan of Milea's premium Bordeaux Blend which includes some estate grown cab franc mixed with juice from vineyards they own on Long Island. It is frankly an excellent wine so I am baffled by the reviewer who dumped on their wines. Sorry to say but they obviously don't know what they are talking about.

Yelp
This vineyard is beautiful and it is a lovely place however we purchased a$34 bottle of wine and when at time of payment the bill became $50. When I questioned why the server mumbled something and I just said ok. Someone said it might have been a cork charge. $15 for the girl to open a bottle of wine ? That is ridiculous. We will not be going back

Kimberly D.

Yelp
The tasting room has a gorgeous view, with nice wines & food. The staff was super friendly and overall it was wonderful experience!

Jo Ann D.

Yelp
Everything they do is 5 including the service #Liam .....the food was amazing from sliders to homemade lobster pasta .....

Yelp
Let me start by saying wow. Nice view of vineyard from the bar area. You should definitely make a reservation no matter what time of year. Food was great, looking forward to coming back when their outdoor space is open. Wine selection and service was great, our server Alex was amazing! Our bartender explained every wine, gave us the back story of the vineyard. Overall 10/10 , 2 1/2 hours from home but hope to be back soon!

Yelp
This new, closest-to-my-house (well... now that I finally know of its existence) winery has also become a great place to bring wine-loving friends. It has an appealing ambience both inside and outside, with a variety of seating options. On nice days, I believe that's the Litchfield Hills in CT that you can see to the distant east. They have a variety of wines, probably something for everyone. They also have an assortment of flight options. The Winemakers Choice is essentially their "have it our way" option, but you can pick and choose from others or order by the glass. Prices have gone up in the last year or so, which I guess is expected. Service was friendly and really nice all-around. Their website also offers a calendar of events, which will indicate when there is music accompaniment, and what foods may be available to purchase. Last night, it was evidently tapas, this afternoon it was wood-grilled pizzas from local favorite Joe Cristiano's. Their website suggests a reservation. You may not need one on slower days, but you may want to make it anyway, just to be safe. And you almost certainly will need one during peak times, such as fall foliage season - because if you enjoy their wine and the scenery, you don't want someone else to get that last table.

Yelp
I'll go out on a limb here and say this newcomer is likely the best winery visit in this general area. I believe I've been to most, and this has displaced Stoutridge and Nostrano in my affections. It's a bit more lavish than some - offering a beautiful retail section, a menu of snacks, and a pizza option. We arrived late on the day they were previewing their new Rose. I have to say I did not care much for that but very much enjoyed the glass of Vignoles and a Bordeaux style blend they offered. The view out over the vineyards was gorgeous. I beleive the road had been recently repaved, sparing our tires the indignites that await from the rutted paths to so many Hudson vineyards. Will make a reservation next time and have a formal tasting.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here with an 8 person party during the end of winter/ beginning of spring. Too cold to sit outside but the outdoor area looked awesome. Beautiful views. Would love to return in the summer. We sat inside and it was the perfect spot for such a big group as it was quiet enough inside that you didn't need to shout to hold a conversation. Really had a fun night with great conversation and lots of laughs. I didn't pick out the wines, so I didn't love any of them but that is entirely because the bottles picked weren't to my taste. Would love to go back and try some other wines. The food was shockingly good. Cheese plate... amazing. Korean fried chicken... AMAZING. The staff was soooo friendly.
google avatar

Matthew F.

Yelp
This is not only one of the prettier wineries in the area, the wine is also very nice. I also like the options for mixed drinks. I got both the red and white flights. I wasn't a big fan of the merlot but liked the cab franc and thought the cab and red blend were pretty good. But I liked-to-loved all the whites, especially the riesling. My big complaint is the flights were on the expensive side. After my tasting I chatted with my servers for a bit and they were very informative about the vineyard. Unfortunately I didn't take notes and I can't remember how many acres they have.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I were looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon and she found this place. We made a reservation as the website said it was recommended. While not crowded early that changed around 3 pm. This winery was great. For a large property it has a very cozy feel to it. We sat outside on the Adirondack chairs and enjoyed the view. The wine was great and our waitress Kristen was awesome. She was very knowledgeable about the wine and food. We split the KFC (Korean fried chicken). Is was awesome. The food may be a bit on the higher side but the quality of the wines and food make it worth it. The only minor negative is that you can't choose your flight if doing a tasting. It's already pre chosen. I definitely recommend this place. We will be back.

Yelp
We attended the 2022 Hudson Valley Wine & Food Festival and the Milea Estate Vineyard was at the event. We enjoyed their products so much so we decided to go for a winery visit the very next week. This winery does get crowded on certain days so try to make a tasting reservation. You have the choices to get a guided flight (cost a little more) or a self guided flight. We opted for the self guided flight. The outdoor space at this winery is absolutely beautiful & the indoor tasting area is quite comfortable. The self guided tasting flight is $20 but the servings are shareable for two. If you purchase 3 bottles then the one tasting is free. Yes!!! The foods are delicious and interesting. The pizza is made fresh & tasty. The main menu has a special Asian fusion flair. We are especially impressed by the small attention to detail at this winery. For instance, we ordered a bottle to share and it was served in Riedel wine glasses which is fantastic. The new stone area overlooking the vines is a wonderful new addition. The staff are helpful, friendly & accommodating. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to this winery. A+ to go with a few girlfriends. The sparking Rose is excellent.

Yelp
Really cute place! I found it was a little difficult driving up bc of the dirt roads that create so much smoke from cars in front. It makes it hard to see where you're going especially since you're driving on a curved hill going up. The vineyard itself is really nice, we did a wine tasting which allowed me to pick 4 wines of my own choice. They all come in a nice little holder with 4 little wine glasses. We didn't eat but I have heard the food here is good as well! Def a nice place to relax and enjoy the views!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Absolutely loved everything about Milea! Came on a Friday afternoon with a group of six and it wasn't too crowded but we had a reservation just in case. Not only was the wine good but the views outside were stunning. The outdoor seating is plenty with some tables and cute Adirondack chairs. The sparkling rosé is a must along with a tasting to sample some reds and whites. The cheese plate was also very good complete with fresh honeycomb. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Sang, who made us feel so welcomed! I really can't wait to visit again.

Megan D.

Yelp
A great place to spend the afternoon. Delightful service in a stunning locale. I'm a bit of a wine snob and the wine is surprisingly good for Ny state. Great snack options too.

Marie A.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous property with undulating hills, vineyards, and views of the Catskills. The Farmhouse and tasting room are charming and the ambiance cannot be beat with the outdoor fireplaces, comfortable seating, and beautiful views. The food was okay - a bit pricey for the portion size. Unfortunately, the wines were some of the worst I've ever tasted. They were thin, pale, and acrid. I went to a tasting and noticed I was one of the only people (if not THE only one) actually taking notes about the wines. They had the consistency of water - there was zero body among either whites or reds. The reds looked like they were all Gamay or Pinot Noir grapes when they were Cab Francs, Merlot, etc - just so pale. Many of them smelled as if they had already oxidized and tasted the same. I was quite disappointed with the actual product. However....good for them to convince people to buy the wines and join their wine club. Great marketing. P.S. I work in the wine industry and have tasted hundreds of different wines so I'm not just blowing smoke here. These are very poorly made wines.

Cherry T.

Yelp
I guess I expected more as they have a very good online advertisements. Because it rained in the morning, the sat most of the people indoor. It was crowded and the level of noise made it very hard to hear what the staff was saying about the wine, who by the way, not yet old enough to drink. She's nice and seems knew what she was talking about but it is surely all just memorized and not based on experience. But, yes the view is beautiful. Wish we just sat outside. Food was good but didn't go there for food. It's all for wine tasting experience, which wasn't what we expected.
google avatar

Marc K.

Yelp
This was such a pleasant experience. Went on a Saturday as the weather was starting to cool down. Made a rsvp which is only for indoor. However we chose and wanted to sit outside. Greeted at the entrance before going in. Very nice interior and bar tasting area. The outdoor deck faces the sprawling estate and vineyard. There were a handful of tables on the deck with a delightful jazz duo performing. Weather tables were full so we sat at one of the many tables on the lawn area. Loved the ambience and the jazz duo sang a fun happy birthday diddy to my partner. Will come back soon!
google avatar

Tela M.

Yelp
Loved everything about this place! We were here a few weekends ago, just stepped in for a glass of wine, ended up getting a bottle. The tasting room was not too crowded, but I think most tables were filled. It was so memorable because they had an incredibly talented pianist playing all afternoon, and the music, the gorgeous views of the Hudson valley and our crisp white made for a relaxing and great experience. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area!
google avatar

Enxhi B.

Yelp
Nice vineyard, pretty views of fall foliage. The rosè was okay, the merlot was very good. They have some snack options like cheese, olives and crackers but not much aside from that. There was a food truck today so we got lunch from there to enjoy with the wine. I do think they would benefit from offering some more food options directly.

Karen D.

Yelp
Celebrated our anniversary here and it was amazing. The food was delicious and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. We opted for guided wine tasting and enjoyed it so much. We will be back.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Outstanding. Tried 12 wines, loved 11. We bought 6 bottles. The service was amazing and so friendly.

Rick D.

Yelp
We were a group of 14 people and made a reservation way in advance. When we arrived, they were ready for us with smiles. I expected the wine to be great and it did not disappoint. What I was not expecting was that the appis would be so good. We had one of each thing on the menu and nothing was left over. The waitstaff was also wonderful and informative. While the view was spectacular, I can only imagine how it would be with foliage. The 14 of us all have been to other wineries and everyone was impressed with Milea.
google avatar

Marie A.

Yelp
Loved this off the beaten path winery. John behind the bar knows the ins and outs of the place and every selection available on the menu. The ciders were delicious, the gin packed a punch and the wines were super satisfying. There was live music when we visited and the view was beyond picturesque.
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place while driving around after visiting the Vanderbilt estate. The views of the Hudson Valley were stunning. The pizza they made on site was great very tasty. The also had a great wine and food shop. Loved the truffle chips. The staff was friendly my wine flight sparkling wine was displayed very nice. But the wines were just okay but the food ,service, outdoor seating more then made up for the wines. They also make cider but I didn't try any because they were dry ciders and like sweeter ciders. But this winery is great with stunning views great for family and friends.
