"A back-to-nature haven in Crete’s mountains, this 16th-century hamlet runs on solar and serves a mostly organic, hyper-local menu that tastes of the land around it." - Katie Silcox, Rachel Howard

Milia Traditional Settlement, White Mountains, Crete - Explore & Book

"A cross between a Cretan village, an ecological farm and a mountain hostel, Milia is a unique and ambitious project. Set high above the Topolia gorge in the western foothills of the White Mountains, at the head of an enclosed valley bursting with chestnut and arbutus trees, this tiny settlement was used as a hideout by WW2 resistance fighters, and later abandoned. But, in 1982, two energetic, eco-minded locals decided to bring it back to life. Using private and EU funds, they reconstructed old houses, reintroduced livestock and replanted terraces. Stream water was piped in, solar electric panels were installed and a smooth road has replaced the bumpy track. You'll find 14 beautifully restored stone houses with simple bedrooms and bathrooms, a spacious communal dining room, and a warm welcome from gentle Giorgos, tireless Tassos and their hospitable helpers. If you enjoy the simple, slow pleasures of life – home-grown food, country hikes, stunning views – you will never want to leave. Highs We loved the total seclusion, high in a wooded valley, and a world away from the crowds on the coastThere's great flora and fauna, including vultures, orchids and dozens more endemic flowersThe delicious, organic, home-grown food typefies that famously healthy Cretan dietThe absolute serenity: no cars or telephones (though you can get a faint mobile signal) - just birdsong and the wind in the trees Lows The rooms are simple, especially the bathroomsA solar system provides some electricity (you can charge phones), but not enough for TV, radio or hairdryers in the roomsIt's best in summer, as an escape from the heat and crowds; from Oct to April it can be rather cold and darkNot suitable for those who are uncomfortable with heights, or who have mobility issues" - Michael Cullen

Milia Mountain Retreat | Best places to stay in Crete

"High in the mountains of Western Crete, Milia was a trailblazer for sustainable tourism long before it became a buzzword. A 16th-century settlement of stone cottages, once used by chestnut farmers, has been carefully transformed into cosy, distinctively Cretan accommodation. Local authenticity runs through every detail: from the woven bedspreads to the artisan jams at breakfasts, and especially in the superb, sophisticated Cretan cuisine at the restaurant (a destination in its own right). They offer hikes in the surrounding area, cooking classes and a jam-making, where you go pick the seasonal fruits yourself on a short hike. Surrounded by thick forests threaded with hiking trails, this is a place to commune with nature in the company of like-minded travellers and big-hearted locals. " - Rachel Howard

The restaurant is fantastic, super good quality food, freshly prepared. A real treat. Served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. 5 stars all the way for the restaurant. Unfortunately the accommodation is a little disappointing. It has the feel of an upmarket hostel rather than eco lodging. It's only small things that let it down, for example, the whole point of coming here is to do the fantastic walks. There are no information boards or maps. We eventually got a sheet on one walk from reception.....but it should have been easier. Breakfast was average and the breakfast room poorly laid out. Not keen to see a dog in the food prep area. Extra charges for hot items at breakfast was a surprise. The eco credentials if this places are debatable, lots of concrete, wood burners (and hence lots of smoke when sitting outside), no signs of recycling. That said, it is an interesting place to stay, fantastic walks and great restaurant.

This will be one of the most memorable and meaningful experiences of your trip to Greece. The food in the restaurant is amazing. The service and hospitality for our group of 12 women was amazing. We loved the personalized experiences. Mochmoud - one of the young staff took amazing care of us, as did the waiters in the restaurant. The story, history, beauty, and peacefulness of this place is healing & restorative. I can’t wait to come back to this special place.

Reviewing the restaurant, since we did not stay in their accommodation. Amazing (maybe unique) alpine feel off the beaten track location with beautiful surroundings (the drive alone is worth it), welcoming staff and friendly service, and great food. Highly recommended if you are looking for a different Crete experience.

Wow... went there for lunch on a tour about 5 days ago. Food and atmosphere is incredible. Its a fun adventure driving up the mountain getting there. Great service. Had a taste of several dishes. Didnt stay in the rooms. The grounds are beautiful and very unique.

We came here for lunch and it was the best meal we had in Chania, bar none. The drive was a bit scary (drive slowly!) but very beautiful, and being high up in the spectacular mountains offered such a nice reprieve from busy Chania Town. A very special place! Highly, highly recommended.

This place definitely have some character, although I was surprised how close all neighbors are. At the same time, considering typical guest who likes to hide in the middle of nowhere, it was very quiet at night. Great place for hiking trails around. You can really have a beautiful walk, visit some villages for lunch/coffee/beer along your hiking trails ( couple hours walk), and get back to your accommodation, where you can eat at the restaurant. Despite many opinions, I was disappointed with restaurant. Some meals were not available ( it was October - so not peak of the season, but still all rooms were booked) and those that we could order were quite average. And last thing. there is only 1 power socket in entire room, including toilet, so if you have more than 1 thing to charge over night, then it is a bummer.

We only stayed for a couple of days but it was enough for a relaxing experience on the mountains. The nights up there are quiet and you can spend your evening with a nice bottle of wine looking at the starlit sky.

Hidden mountain gem! Such a refreshment to come here after loud seaside towns. Epic breakfast &restaurant views, hiking and amazing food. Probably it was the best musaka I’ve ever tried.
