3 Houston Restaurants to Try This Weekend: June 13 | Eater Houston

"In a city where ice cream is a year-round treat, this shop focuses on flavors inspired by Asian diasporic traditions — think Thai tea, a yum cha flavor with chrysanthemum and pandan swirl, and seasonal milk tea — alongside playful offerings like Love is Love (strawberry ice cream cake with confetti cake), the Happy Wife (sweet cream with homemade almond pound cake), and a satisfying PB Cookies and Cream. Generous samples and the option to half-scoop two flavors make tasting easy, and the shop is considerate of lactose-intolerant customers, selling Lactaid pills at the register for 50 cents." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
A perfect mixture of creamy and sweet ice cream. The strawberry almond cheesecake flavor was so yummy! 😋 Definitely will return to try the Happy Wife flavor! 😆 The pricing was reasonable as well.

Literally - standing room only and a line out the door. So good. As their sign reads - life is too short for plain vanilla. Unique adult flavors that adult palates can appreciate that is reminiscent of childhood standards. Cashless store. Free small parking lot.

Another awesome ice cream spot in Houston. My family loves to try artisanal ice cream shops wherever we go. This one is clean and we were greeted with friendly smiles. They were patient while our group of tried 2-4 flavors each! Good taste and quality- scoops were a good size and no extra charge to split the flavor!🥇 It was cheaper than Kilwins!

Google
I’ve been here twice and the ice cream is good. The waffle cones are amazing. The flavors can be veryyy sweet which is slightly overwhelming. If you enjoy basic ice cream this isn’t the place for you. (Also 1 scoop is good for 1 person and 2 scoops is just too much, in my opinion) My only recommendation is for the workers to be able to make suggestions, when I ask if they have something a little less sweet the guy wasn’t helpful at all.

Google
Came here after crawfish and had the strawberry shortcake. The staff was friendly to us and they told about the flavors and which ones were seasonal and which ones were staples. They were patient as we tried flavors and did not rush us. I ended up getting 2 scoops in a cone and left with a huge smile 😃

Google
This place is easily one of our best ice cream visits over the years, and there have been far too many. Get the wedding cake. Lots of options, and all were delicious, but for me it wasn’t just the flavors, it was the texture of the ice cream. Light without being cheap and too airy. Rich without being too dense and heavy. So dang good. Get the wedding cake. They had some cute merch too. And the decor was simple and nice. Get the wedding cake.

Google
One of my favorite ice cream places in Houston, Texas. My favorite flavor that we got was the black sesame, the peanut butter went so well with the black sesame. My next favorite flavor was the Pandan, love how they have Asian flavors here. The Thai tea was pretty unique and cool as you can taste the Tea leaves. The service was amazing. I will come back.

Google
In my humble opinion, this establishment offers some of the most delectable and creamy ice cream in the town. The freshly made waffle cones are simply delightful. The service provided is also commendable. For those who cherish ice cream, this establishment is certainly worth a visit.

Yelp
Milk+Sugar... such a simple name that's straight to the point! Like, I'm still thinking about it hours later. I got the Peanut Butter Cookies & Cream and I swear, from the first bite I was like "Ohhh this is different." It was so damn good. Just the right amount of sweetness. Real ingredients. You know how some places do too much? Not here. It's just right. What really got me though is how easy on my stomach it was. I usually have to brace myself after dairy, but this? No issues at all. I didn't regret overindulging at all. Service was friendly. I also really respect how they don't try to overwhelm you with a hundred wild flavors. They keep it simple, and every single option looked solid. You can tell they actually care about getting the flavors right, not just doing the most.

Yelp
I first fell in love with milk and sugar when I went to the original location at river oaks. I took some friends but was disappointed they didn't have the 'follow your noise' the milk ice cream with fruit loops. I do love all the other flavors but I love the fruity taste of the loops in combination with the milk ice cream. The cereal milk is good as it is a combination of frosted flakes with the milk ice cream but it can get a little too sweet and buttery after a couple of bites. I love how the milk ice creams are chewy and stretchy and have so much flavor in them. Plus the added cereals are so crunchy and flavorful despite being added into the ice creams. The almond flavored ice creams also have the almond taste to it but can be a little less chewy and stretchy compared to the full dairy milk ones. I love that they got a new heights location and there is plenty of parking. They have some outside chairs/benches if you prefer to hang outside as well. You can always try out a couple of flavors and everyone is super helpful and sweet at the shop.

Yelp
This was my first time at this specific location, but this 5 stars goes out to every milk + sugar in town. It is definitely my favorite ice cream shop in town. They have several different locations, all offering cute indoor and outdoor seating. Their ice cream flavors are the real stars of the show. Some of my all time favorites are cereal milk and follow your nose. Right now, they have their seasonal yumcha (also one of my all time favorites- features a chrysanthemum pandan combo), and the fruity pebbles one. I love coming here to treat myself to something sweet. Service is great and they are always nice about samples.

Yelp
Milk & Sugar is so good! From the warm welcome to the last spoonful, this ice cream shop truly shines. I tried the lavender honey, and it was pure bliss--creamy, smooth, and perfectly balanced. My friend loved the salted caramel brownie, praising its rich flavor and generous chunks. The atmosphere is nice: clean, bright, and inviting. The staff are incredibly friendly and genuinely happy to help. You can tell they use high-quality ingredients and craft each scoop with care. For a truly delicious treat and wonderful service, Milk & Sugar is a must-visit! I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
This is quite literally my favorite ice cream spot. I'm always down to go here! I tried out another location (Sheperd) vs. my typical (Westheimer) and it was still good. I take everyone here now!
google avatar

Vanessa Pretty Conceit H.

Yelp
I love that they didn't have too many complicating flavors. Everything that I tried and sampled was so delicious. Definitely recommend this for a girls day, something sweet to treat yourself, family day. I love the outside seating inside seating is not much and it's easy to get to
google avatar

Lara B.

Yelp
Obsessed with their Pandan dairy free ice cream! Quick and friendly service. No cash!
google avatar

Nan N.

Yelp
Always love to try non traditional ice cream flavors. I typically have to have chocolate but I cannot say no to both yum cha (chrysanthemum and pandan) and hocus pocus (black sesame) . The cone is also crispy and buttery. Split order were just perfect size for 2 scoops. Friendly staff. Love love love
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing. Absolutely nothing bad to say. The butter pecan flavor was divine. So creamy and delicious, the service was so quick and the servers were so kind. If you're in Houston, this is a must try!

Yelp
I absolutely enjoyed all the flavors I've tried so far over the years. After ordering on Ubereats many times, we visited it locally in person and to see all the flavors personally and loved the shop. Overall solid!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I hadn't tried milk + sugar until a few nights ago and I had a great experience!! I love ice cream and this was the perfect sweet treat after dinner. Inside is super cute and clean! The servers were very friendly and let us try a few different types. I got the Oatmeal Cream Pie and my friend got the Peanut Butter Cookies and Cream. They were both delicious! I really like sweet ice cream, and that's definitely what these were. I can't believe I hadn't been here already and will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Jooy C.

Yelp
Lots of parking and seating at this new location! Appreciate the late night hours and unique combination flavors at this ice cream shop. If you check out their Instagram they are always changing things up with amazing seasonal flavors - I'm always skeptical to try something new but end up loving it. Hocus pocus is a seasonal flavor made of black sesame and shortbread cookies - color looks odd at first but it's really delicious. Excited to see that they've brought some new fall/Christmas flavors and I can't wait to try!

Yelp
Okay, I get it... I have a dairy allergy and went to a place called "milk and sugar" BUT I feel like they should have more than two options of non dairy cold desserts. I had the mango sorbet, it was good. Refreshing. The workers were nice and gave samples if you wanted them. The restaurant was also clean.
google avatar

Mendy L.

Yelp
I love this location! It has better parking & a very attentive staff that are super patient. Inside was super clean. Milk & Sugar has always been my favorite ice cream shop because of the "City Never Sleeps" flavor including their "Thai Tea". Today I tried their "A Perfect Matcha" which was so good & didn't taste like water down matcha. I'll definitely will be back more to this location because of their parking & friendly staff.
google avatar

Tasfia A.

Yelp
This is my fav ice cream in town these days. Creamy and flavorful, and their flavors are creative! My all time favs are the cereal milk (tastes like the milk in a cereal bowl with bits of Frosted Flakes cereal in it) and this coffee with nuts flavor they have. But I love myself a coffee-flavored ice cream. They have vegan flavors as well. The service is always excellent and they're really nice about letting you try different flavors. Atmosphere is perfect for small groups. It's a smaller location but a fun little stop for you and a few friends. Parking situation: on-site
google avatar

Ari K.

Yelp
Had an ice cream here back when I was on spring break. I got the Sundae Funday (sweet cream w/ brownie bits & fudge swirl) and the City That Never Sleeps (coffee/pretzel w/ chocolate bits), both flavors which I found to be quite delicious. It was fairly busy at the time (after dinner, around 8?) but nothing crazy, which was good.
google avatar

Javier B.

Yelp
Yet another great ice cream shop in the Heights. I've always been fond of their Westheimer location, so I was very excited to see them closer to home. We went in and were greeted by the friendly staff that offered us samples of any offerings we were curious about. Ended up trying a waffle cone with two scoops: one hello summer and one pb cookies & cream. Both were phenomenal! Can't wait to go back and try all the others!
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
This place is super cute, a great place for a sweet treat. I came in on a Friday night and it was very lively. They have super interesting flavors, not your typical Chocolate and Vanilla. The employees are super nice, they'll even let you try samples until you figure out which flavor you want to try. I tried an apple pie flavor ice cream and it was fantastic! I'd definitely recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
Fast and good service but can we please get a kid's scoop option so we don't have to pay $7 for a kid?
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
There's so many ice cream places around the heights, and this was the first one we visited on our list. It was really good, and an okay price - about average for ice cream scoops these days. We biked, and I loved that there was ample amount of spots to hook up our bikes (lots of places have nothing). The service was very friendly and helpful. It's bright and has fun decor inside with decent amount of seating. There's also a few benches outside to sit. Would come again to try a new flavor!
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
I tried a few different samples and thought they were all pretty good. I chose "heart of glass" (cream cheese ice cream and cinnamon sugar blondes) and "Thai tea" as they appeared more unique. There were chunks of chewy cinnamon sugar blondes in the cream cheese ice cream. It was a fun texture. The Thai tea is super sweet, intense and creamy. It perfectly captures the taste in ice cream form. A single (1 flavor, 2 scoops) or a split (2 flavors, 2 scoops) is $5.50 with no tax/ $5.95 with tax applied. There's a cute mural depicting iconic structures in the Heights. If you forget your lactose pill, you can purchase one for $0.50 inside.

Yelp
Okay yall / this place SLAPS! I loved the ice cream here! It was the first time I've tried milk and sugar and it wowed me. The flavors were so diverse, interesting, and so delicious! We decided on doing a split cup (2 flavors in a small) of cereal milk (Frosted Flakes on top) and Sunday funday (sweet cream with brownie bits) and it was sooo delicious! Also tried the early grey flavor with lavender and lemon and wow. The flavors are so good and ice cream so rich, creamy, decadent. Amazing texture!
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
Love the location in Montrose, but loving it more now that it's about a 5 min drive from us! They've got all the same great everyday and seasonal flavors as the Montrose location. Parking at this location is easier since the parking lot is a bit bigger than the Montrose one. They are located in the same complex as Chilantro. The service was very friendly and they def had a steady stream of people coming in and out. I got my usual which is a split scoop with Thai tea and the strawberry almond cheesecake. I also really like heart of glass which is cream cheese ice cream with cinnamon sugar blondies. Just depends on the mood I'm in when I alternate flavors. They just opened so come show them some love!
google avatar

Thanh D.

Yelp
I was surprised to see a new milk and sugar location in the heights! It was a sweet treat to have after dinner with friends on a hot Houston day. The location is spacious with ample parking (already a plus relative to the original location). It's also well lit and had outdoor seating available. The inner vibe of the place is very much the same as the original. Service was pretty quick and the place is cashless. For this date, I enjoyed the sundae fundae! The brownie chunks and fudge chunks were perfect!

Esther M.

Yelp
I love this place so muchhhh!! I'm a big fan of their yum cha (pandan + chrysanthemum) and dulce de horchata (horchata and caramel). I'll always recommend this place, my fave ice cream in Houston
google avatar

Heather P.

Yelp
milk + sugar can't be beat! My all time favorite ice cream spot in Houston has opened this newest location in the Heights! The new shop is so cute and vibrant, and the service here is friendly. I love all the new tasty flavors, it really makes it hard to choose. Being Filipina, I had to try their Ube though, and I have to say this was 10/10! So yummy paired with one of my other favorites "Heart of Glass". milk + sugar never fails no matter which location you go to!
google avatar

Vivian N.

Yelp
One of mine and my friends' favorite icecream spots! The cereal milk always hits but we are currently loving their seasonal flavor Yumcha which is Pandan and chrysanthemum. We are hoping it's not just seasonal and stays on the menu!! So refreshing and not too sweet
google avatar

Yolanda H.

Yelp
What more can I say...that butter pecan ice cream was the best thing ever. Service was great the young lady there offered for us to try the butter pecan and she nailed it.
google avatar

Ye J.

Yelp
New location in the Heights with plenty of parking. The inside is clean and spacious with plenty of seating. The outside double rocking chairs are very cute and provides additional seating (too hot so we didn't try out). Ordered a double with the seasonal Perfect Matcha and Rain or Shine (earl gray + lavender + lemon), the flavors are really good. Sadly the second scoop on the bottom melted pretty fast and turned into thick milkshake consistency when we got to it (not sure if the texture changed compare to the original location or just the weather being too hot?) With Fat Cat moving further away from the Heights, can definitely see myself coming back here more.
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
4.5 stars Flavors are delicious, but why is ice cream so pricey lol. ($5.50 for split scoop cup) CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS - [coffee & pretzel ice cream + chocolate flakes] - very good. Strong flavor but not overpowering. Chocolate flakes were yummy and added good texture. I've realized I like ice cream with chunks of something in them. STRAWBERRY ALMOND CHEESECAKE - [cream cheese & almond ice cream + strawberry swirl + crushed Graham cracker] - SO GOOD!! definitely tasted like a cheesecake. Slight preference to this flavor, being my favorite one. Also sampled - HAPPY WIFE [sweet cream ice cream + almond pound cake] - I love pound cake, and this was good, but i just preferred the other 2. Also this tasted more plain especially since I sampled the other 2 first. SLOW & STEADY [chocolate ice cream + caramel swirl & chopped pecans] - very chocolately, and that's all I tasted. Good if that's what you are looking for though. $5.50 for a split scoop in a cup, which we shared. The guy was very nice, and we got lucky with a generous scoop of City That Never Sleeps, just because there were only 2 scoops left. Decent size parking lot. We were looking for something sweet after dinner at Chi'lantro and found this right next door! There is indoor and outdoor seating. Next time, I'd like to try thai tea, butter pecan streusel, hello summer (through August), and pb cookies & cream.
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
Milk and sugar has been on the top of my ice cream list for years and they've previously been out of their main Montrose store. This location is off of Shepherd and just north of 11th street. The parking here is definitely much easier with their large adjacent lot for the plaza. The interior is clean and around the same size if not a bit larger than the Montrose store. We got a double with their seasonal perfect matcha and the rain or shine (earl gray). The flavors were good but the texture/ consistency was a bit off from what I remembered from previous ice cream outings; they usually have a very sticky/creamy texture from high butterfat most likely. Our ice cream this time was melting indoors by the time it was in the cup and the texture just seemed a bit subpar to what I remember. It's still solid and they should remain popular here as well.
google avatar

Diem A.

Yelp
So excited they opened a location in the heights. I went to the original location on Westheimer frequently. The ice cream is so yummy here. You can sample the flavors before deciding. They also sell pints to take home and have free water. Plenty of parking and friendly service.

John P.

Yelp
The staff was friendly making me familiar with all the different flavors. The ice cream was delicious. Would definitely come again. Great atmosphere as well!
google avatar

Celina V.

Yelp
After school treat did not disappoint. The ice cream was creamy and full of flavor. City that never sleeps was a coffee flavor. It was rich in coffee flavor with a light chocolate bits Cereal milk was so creamy and had just enough frosted flavors without being too sweet. We will be returning

Norman C.

Yelp
Run to @milk+sugar for amazingly fresh ice cream made with high quality ingredients! The service was great and patient to spoon up samples of the incredibly creative flavors @milk+sugar has dreamed up.
google avatar

Bryan D.

Yelp
Definitely the best ice cream in town, honestly most anywhere. I recommend it to everyone and always take visitors here for a nice dessert or late night snack. Montrose location was easy to get to but wow I'm in trouble now that it's just down the street! Heights location has ample parking and plenty of seating inside and out, as well as many food options nearby if you plan to knock out dinner too. My favorite classics are: - Strawberry Almond Cheesecake: the graham cracker crumbles are amazing, the almond comes through nicely, and the strawberry swirl slaps - Cereal Milk: Frosted Flakes are crunchy and the milk divinely nostalgic - Rain or Shine: a throuple of Earl grey, lavender, and lemon that just makes sense You can't go wrong with any though so try them all! I also look forward to the monthly or seasonal flavors because they really display the owner's creativity and passion. Definitely grab Hello Summer when you get the chance. I also hope they bring back Yum Cha!
google avatar

Gregston C.

Yelp
One of my favorite ice cream spots in Houston. So glad this second location is closer. Delicious and unique flavors. Friendly staff that let you try the flavors. Double scoop of the Thai tea is my usual. Must get the waffle cone. Amazing Heights landmark mural by @carolinetruongart. I wish the ice cream was a little colder. It's gets a little drippy with a double scoop.
google avatar

Yasmina R.

Yelp
OMG, this is the best ice cream I've had in my life!! My friend and I visited here after dinner, no expectations at all, but we were beyond pleased. We came after dinner on a Thursday night and were greeted with delicious smells and a cute interior! The lady was kind enough to let us sample a bunch of delicious flavors as well! We ended up getting a split scoop with the rain or shine, an early grey ice cream with lavender and lemon, perfectly light and creamy. Our other scoop was the Thai tea, with such strong flavors, and both of the flavors combined were also surprisingly good. I've honestly been thinking about their ice cream every day since I've had it, I need to go back ASAP! Definitely has some of the best ice cream and desserts in Houston, I can't wait to go back to try more flavors. Love the concept as well.

Jonah L.

Yelp
Love this ice cream spot, the ice cream itself is great with decent portions and pricing! Also love the atmosphere and the location is quite nice. Staff were welcoming and helpful!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Happy Wife is my favorite! They opened their second location near my house, so wife and I can enjoy their ice cream more often. Also this location has plenty of parking space so it's easy and quick getting in and out!
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
Staff was friendly, ice cream was great but the waffle cone was especially yummy with a hint of cinnamon I tasted,
google avatar

Dionne C.

Yelp
Love the City that Never Sleeps and tried the Happy Wife. Quiet clean little spot with great flavors.
google avatar

Jackie C.

Yelp
Very friendly service and they have some interesting and delicious flavors. The interior is also very clean and minimalist. Enjoyed our visit.
google avatar

Ariel H.

Yelp
I love this place! The ice cream is amazing & the workers are always so helpful and patient. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Josh L.

Yelp
The happy wife is the best ice cream I've ever had in my life. I'm freaking addicted! Don't try it! It's a problem hahaha ! Also the waffle cone is insane. Unreal combo with the happy wife. Service is always quick and they're very polite!

Claire C.

Yelp
YOU LITERALLY HAVE TO GO HERE!! Amazing ice cream, super kind staff, great ambience, ample parking, and fair prices for this economy. They are doing something right over at milk+sugar!!

Ruth S.

Yelp
Ice cream was delicious!!! Flavors were so delicious and creamy. The service was so friendly. And it's a cute shop with shaded seating outside for if it ever cools off again. My favorite ice cream in Houston!

Henry Q.

Yelp
Okay, I have to give another update!! my daughters pleaded with me to go back and bring back more ice cream home. This time I went overboard - I couldn't decide on all the amazing flavors! Got four pints to go, and it was phenomenal, textured and smooth with a nice bite to it,. My daughters are in for a treat.
