The 38 Essential Manila Restaurants

"The original Milky Way started out as an ice cream bar in 1962, serving scoops, buko lechias (coconut and lychee) sherbet, and chicken asparagus sandwiches to Manila’s high society. Today, Milky Way continues to serve homey Filipino classics with inspirations from Pampanga, another food capital of the Philippines where chef J. Gamboa’s family is originally from. The classic halo-halo, a popular shaved ice dessert, is hailed as the best in the city, though also take a look at its minimalist cousin, ginumis: shaved ice, sago (tapioca), and gulaman (jelly) topped with coconut cream, pinipig (popped rice), and house-made panutsa ice cream made from cane sugar." - Toni Potenciano

"In Search of Authentic Halo-Halo at Milky Way Café Halo-halo is a popular everyday dessert whose name is a Tagalog word meaning "mix." It’s composed of many ingredients, including various beans, fruits, and jelly-like coconut-based sweets. These toppings are put over a big bowl of shaved ice with milk; finally, the mixture is topped with a slice of leche flan (cream custard) and ube (purple yam). Some versions also incorporate gelatin, cheese, or pinipig (crispy rice), though nothing beats adding a scoop of ube ice cream on top. The proper way to eat halo-halo is to stir it up first so that each spoonful includes many ingredients and gives you a taste and texture explosion. Halo-halo is available everywhere, from public markets and local food chains to ice cream bars and the most luxurious hotel restaurants. But serious connoisseurs go for the classic one at the Milky Way Café. The eatery has been serving halo-halo for more than 40 years, and their iteration boasts 20 premium house-made ingredients and ice that is finely shaved using a hand crank."

I’m on a quest for superb dinuguan (Filipino pork blood stew) from food providers that are consistently reliable to buy from. Actually I already found the perfect delicious one — Juliet’s Lechon. However they don’t always have it in the menu and usually it’s just included as a freebie when you order their whole lechon. Anyway back to Milky Way. It ain’t them. Apart from being overpriced (teeny portion for the price), the dinuguan is full of lean, stringy, dryish pork, essentially ruining the dinuguan experience as a comfort food. The timpla is excellent though with the right balance of suka and spices. Maybe they could offer an option of all lamang-loob sans the pork. Or use fattier pork or bagnet or lechong kawali maybe. The puto is also excellent though a bit on the too sweet side for my taste.

An old school but still a goodie. If you are looking for real authentic filipino flavor this is the place. Highly recommended specially to balikbayan or tourist. They stayed true to the filipino flavors, no gimik just good filipino food. My fave was the diniguan, been a longtime since I tasted this real flavor. Another fave is the Kare Kare and Krispy Pata.

Definitely come here for their halo-halo, as it is some of the best in Manila. They also have amazing local ice cream flavors and great steak with mashed potatoes. However, their sinigang is a little too sour for my taste, and they don't have many vegetarian options. Service is really good and there's a large space for dining.

we went there for sunday lunch - we waited an hour to seated in the hallway w/c was real humid. suggest you call to reserve a slot or come in for an early or late lunch. we waited still coz we’re curious as to why this was so recommended to eat at. had an issue w/ the parking guard also for he did not seem to want to assist us when we asked where the valet was. he just starred blankly at us. and when we asked again at a tone that he can hear that someone was speaking to him. he said there was none and even commented that the auto we have was too long. hmmm. already reported to management and we still ate here coz the food was indeed delicious. the inihaw na baboy tho was just tooooo gamey but the rest were stellar.

Google
We were looking for a place to hold an intimate lunch with friends a couple of weeks ago and we were so glad we found this place. Food is your standard Filipino cuisine and they won’t disappoint. What we had: Kare-kare, Tortang Talong, Halo-halo, Crispy Pata, Binagoongan, Chicken Barbecue, Laing, Ginataang Kalabasa, Molo Soup Everything tasted great! Really reminds me of home-cooked meals during Sunday lunch with family. We would definitely go back 🫶

Google
Definitely a great place to have Halo-Halo and other ice cream desserts, in addition to a full menu of Filipino dishes. The restaurant is located in the second floor of a building housing several restaurants. There are two dining areas that are clean and comfortable. Service was professional; however our server took a long time before he came to take the order. Our order was delivered quickly and the quality excellent. We had the Milky Way Halo Halo, The Ginumis Halo Halo and ice cream. Everyone was happy with their order. In addition, the restaurant sells packaged and jarred items to bring home or give as gifts.

We recently celebrated a triple milestone at Milky Way Café in Makati — my cousin's 60th birthday, his mother's 85th, and their wedding anniversary — and it was a lovely experience! The place is spacious and ideal for group gatherings or company events, with a cozy and classic ambiance. The staff, especially the lobby guards, were incredibly helpful and accommodating — their warm service really stood out and made everyone feel welcome. We enjoyed the delicious dishes, though the pasta and pizza could be improved. Still, the overall dining experience and service made it a memorable celebration for our family.

Yelp
My parents hosted a family gathering in the Mabini Room for about 40 guests. The room was set up nicely with tablecloths, seat covers, and full place settings. They even set up a microphone and speaker system, which we did not end up using. At the same time as our party, was another in the neighboring room; despite the room divider, we were able to hear everything from their microphone next door (something to consider if you want full privacy). One other consideration was once the doors to the room were closed, the room quickly heated up. It was much more comfortable temperature in the main dining room than the private room. Overall, we had an overall positive experience and fun time! The service was friendly and quick. They did a great job handling our large group. The food was also very yummy all around! We ordered PINOY BUFFET MENU 4: - Pancit Molo Soup - Lumpiang Gulay - Lechon Kawali with Home-made Atchara - Korean Beef Stew - Hainanese Chicken with Ginger and Chili Sauces - Crispy Hito with Bagoong and Mustasa : - Steamed Rice - Turron with Saba and Langka - Iced Tea, Softdrinks (bottomless) On top of that, we ordered a couple bottles of wine. The two standouts of the menu were the Lechon Kawali and Hainese Chicken. Overall, I was very happy for the food and the service! Def recommend.

Yelp
Bad service!!! We waited for over 30 minutes for our order to be served Noticed that priority was given to other customers who arrived later than our group!!! Servers have problems with prioritizing No apologies afforded at all!!! Palabok had no taste ugh!!! We are from the US and make sure to have a meal or two before going back Well, what's going on!!!

Yelp
Really love this place!! I've been a few times for lunch and also for a couple private parties that my family has hosted. Food is delicious and the service is always on point. Menu has mostly traditional Filipino food but the restaurant also serves some other cuisines. I'm a big fan of Pinoy Buffet Menu #4 on the catering/private event menu (photo included). The servers are so friendly and helpful. The restaurant is simple and clean. I would definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for some good traditional Filipino dishes.

Yelp
A fun venue with family and friends! Food was very good and as a Filipino visiting Manila from the US, it's a home away from home feel! The sweet endings were not to be missed!

Yelp
One of the more established food institutions in Makati is Milkyway Café. Children of the 70's would probably remember them for their deliciously creamy ice cream but this Filipino restaurant has evolved into so much more than just an ice cream parlor. They offer an exciting selection of Filipino dishes that really taste like how a grandmother or an old-fashioned Filipino mom would cook it. From the delectable tokwa't baboy to the rich kaldereta, you can have those comfort dishes in Makati that you'd usually wait until Christmas for. They have the more traditional karinerdya type set-up in Rockwell which is really more for take-away, but in Makati it's more formal. They even have small rooms you can rent out for family events or small corporate meetings - there's just a minimum consumable amount (5k, I think best to inquire as there are different sizes for the rooms) While they really specialize in Filipino dishes, you might want to give their Western fare a try. I'm particularly fond of their selection of pizzas and the amazing Steak ala Pobre. It has just the right mix of garlic and gravy and with a trim of melt-in-your mouth fat on the meat. If you want old-time favorites that hit the spot just right, this is the place to turn to.

Yelp
I love this place! If you're looking for good Filipino food this is the place to go to. I love that they keep it simple and true to the original recipes. I love their chicken BBQ, Sinigang, fried hito (catfish), adobong kangkong, ensaladang manga just to name a few. For dessert you have to try their homemade ice cream, halo halo and coffee jelly! This place gets busy so make a reservation if you plan to go.

Yelp
I always have a hard time thinking of a good Filipino restaurant when I need to give a recommendation to a foreigner. My first answer will always be my house! After giving up on that idea, I always lead them towards Milky Way. It's a nice, homey restaurant that serves top quality, comfort home cooked food! I always go for their crispy hito, yes, it's nothing special but oh, so good! I can't sit still until whoever is ordering says it! I also wouldn't miss out on the pork binagoongan and the sinigang na sugpo, makes my tummy happy every single time! Like most of my reviews say, always make space for dessert! Their corn ice cream is something I wouldn't miss out on but they also have other Filipino specials like mais con yelo (I always order 2 but put it one glass!) or their halo-halo. Every time I eat here, I feel like the waiters really treat me like family. It's a close second to eating at home!

Yelp
Summer has taken a toll on us, the heat is killing the mood of anyone who wants to go out don't you agree? Luckily we have Milky Way that can certainly quench our thirst. Fear not because you will get to try one of the most amazing halo halo in town. It's served to you on a tall ice cream glass. You have to order a glass of crushed ice because you will need as you eat your halo halo. For those of you who are not aware what halo halo, it's this popular Filipino dessert with mixtures of shaved ice, ice cream and evaporated milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and preserved fruits. Leche flan and ube jam are also part of the dessert. For me I try to remove the beans since I'm not really fan. I retain the rest. Sweet and refreshing, that's what you get from halo halo.
