Some Hamptons Restaurants Are Seeing An Uptick in Sales With Outdoor Dining | Eater NY

"At East Hampton’s Millhouse Inn, operators are eschewing the spacious garden and communal dining room and instead delivering meals directly to guests’ suites; owner Sylvia Mueller notes that people seem willing to pay for privacy, comfort, and very little contact." - Beth Landman

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the Mill House Inn. Our room was so bright with natural light coming in from so many windows. The staff was so helpful with any requests we had and breakfast was delicious. Dawn was especially helpful and friendly starting with a personal call the same day we booked our stay. She assisted in recommending restaurants and local attractions that we may want to see while we wete there. It was such and enjoyable and relaxing time and we are already thinking about our next trip there. Would highly recommend the Mill House Inn.

We stayed at The Mill house Inn for 4 nights this past week. We are still on a high from our time there. Kenny, Taylor, Justin and Dawn were so accommodating and kind. There was not a need that wasn't met. They (Taylor and Justin) made delicious breakfasts, gave us chairs and towels for the beach and made sure we had everything we needed. Meeting Kenny felt like running into a long lost friend even though we had only corresponded via email a couple of times. Dawn gave us a pre-visit phone call to see if we needed help with anything prior to arrival (reservations etc). If you want a warm and inviting atmosphere, a cozy inn-like feeling and a place to feel like you're going home, stay at the MHI. I think it's unlike most Hampton experiences.

This was our initial experience at the Mill House Inn located in East Hampton. We visited for the Hampton Classic, and the location proved to be extremely convenient. Our accommodation was situated on the third floor, which was ideal, featuring a king-sized bed, a television, and a bathroom equipped with a spacious soaking tub. Each morning, we enjoyed a complimentary breakfast that included eggs, yogurt, fruit, pancakes, coffee, tea, and more. This meal was available in a cozy dining area or could be served in our room. Additionally, there is a small snack area accessible throughout the day. The Inn itself exudes the charm of a bygone era and is well-maintained. The staff consistently demonstrated friendliness and attentiveness. The Inn is conveniently positioned within walking distance to downtown and other attractions. Overall, it was a delightful stay.

This place is special. I stayed for a weekend recently. I was there for a funeral and really needed a lovely, warm, comforting place to stay. The Mill House Inn was perfect. I stayed in suite 19- gorgeous room, large living room with fireplace, huge bathtub and huge seperate shower. I had custom breakfast brought to my room to eat in front of the fireplace each morning.|Location is excellent. I walked everywhere despite it being January.|The Inn is lovely (love the snacks and cookies in the lobby- I ate all the Snickerdoodles). What really makes the Inn special are the people. Everyone there made my visit as comfortable as it could be. Five stars over and over again. And thank you.

We had a great stay....walked to restaurants and downtown. Kenny, the manager there was so gracious and welcoming in helping me with our reservation after I messed up online. Kelly and Dawn were such friendly hosts and so accommodating. The whole staff made us feel welcome and pampered. The chef prepared exquisite breakfasts, which we are still talking about. What a great experience, and we can't wait to go back again!! Thanks all for making our 25th anniversary celebration one we will always remember!!

Deeply disappointed and shocked in how run down the Inn was after I saw it 10 or 12 years ago when it was beautiful. When I arrived in the evening, no one was there – not an inn keeper, manager or any other guests. There were no cars at the property and it appeared there was no one staying there. Room 4 is terribly shabby and depressing. Torn window treatments and dirty rugs which I have photos of to prove. This was not how the room was described when booking and is not what one expects of a high priced East Hampton Inn. However, the worst part was seeing a MOUSE TRAP under the bed!!! The inn keeper on the phone became defensive and was not at all apologetic. He was rude. talked incessantly – again not how you treat a guest. From Trip Advisor reviews, others have had the identical treatment. ||||I have come to East Hampton for over 20 years and never had such a terrible and stressful time. I help off writing a review as I was hoping for a 50% REFUND as I left the next day and left $2,000 on the table. The request is more than reasonable given the depressing and worn room, the behavior of the inn keeper and the condition of the inn I have stayed in Inns worldwide and never has there NOT been an urn of coffee waiting for guests in the morning. Telling a guest you sent your chef home is ridiculous. Seems the Inn is trying to save money everyway possible. ||||Save yourself the aggravation and money!!

We visited at the end of Aug’24 for a 3-night stay after 6 days in New York City for US Open Tennis. We made the booking (indirectly through an agent) following a recommendation by a friend who stayed there around 10 years ago.||On arrival we were greeted by Dawn (who claimed to be a ‘one woman show’). Initial impressions were of quirkiness and a touch of eccentricity, nothing negative. ||After being shown our room, we could see the overall accommodation looked tired and a bit run down - doors sticking, décor and carpets generally a bit shabby.|A brief summary.||• Breakfast needed to be booked in advance and quite prescriptively as kitchen could not handle changes on the day. (If you think you might want toast then you need to order the evening before)|• No tea/coffee in the rooms. This could be made for you at certain times by the host/kitchen staff if anyone was available.|• Rooms were not serviced daily.|• TV sport stations for watching tennis timed out half- way through our stay. ‘Contract has expired for re-negotiation’.|• The place was soul-less which made me think occupancy was low (Labour day, high point of summer ?) and any guests did not want to hang out there long. The car park had a ‘tumble-weed'’ feel about it.|• We discovered our room rate at the end as we had booked the package with a sports specialist agent for the Tennis at Flushing Meadow,. Whilst this is down to our tardiness the room charge was easily double what we have paid anywhere in the world……..and we have stayed in a number of 4/5 star hotels in big cities.|||On reflection, staff were generally willing to help and, in most cases, trying their best. The key issue is down to business ownership which we understand has been seen difficulties in recent years and hammered by Covid. The business is now cash cowing, and charging exorbitant room rates to stay afloat. The Mill House needs serious investment and a re-appraisal of how a Guest House should be run.

We loved our stay at the The Mill House Inn, and are already planning our next trip. It was my spouses first time out east and I wanted to find a place that was welcoming, had the spirit of the Hamptons, and was well located so we could visit different villages. What I failed to realize when I booked was that we could also just park the car at the Inn and not move it as there was so much to see and do in East Hampton. Genius. Dawn welcomed us and made us feel right at home and it was as if we had our own country house. We loved the breakfast, the friendly staff, and the fact that the other guests seemed to be regulars really spoke to us. We are quite and love to meditate, and walk in nature, so this was heaven to us. Under Dawn's guidance we went to the local beach and surprise, saw a seal giving birth to a pup, had an amazing meal or two thanks to her suggestions and picked up food at Citarella right down the street. We had a lovely time at The Mill House Inn and our two day stay was as relaxing as a week long vacation.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about how wonderful the Mill House Inn is, and we will keep going back again and again! Not only are the rooms beautiful and the location is incredible, but the staff and management are the best! We are definitely spoiled by them team at the Mill House and we could not be happier about it. Thank you!

Yelp
This place is AMAZING, other reviews are not exaggerating. Just got home from a trip, and can't recommend Mill House Inn enough. We stayed in Room 12 which looked to be newly renovated / updated from the photos on their website - it was lighter and brighter and felt more "beachy". It looks beautiful! The room was impeccably clean, and the entire house in general always smelled fresh and seemed to be cleaned constantly. The bed was so comfortable and fluffy. Tons of pillows and blankets. The bathroom was spacious and had an amazing shower. Breakfast was delicious - you get a menu when you arrive and call each day with the delivery time and food selection for the next morning. They are ALWAYS on time. And the food is always tasty and hot, and they have a great variety. Excellent coffee selection as well. They are doing a wonderful job making this happen in Covid times. Last but not least, everyone is super friendly and genuinely wants to help you have a great trip. They have beach chairs, umbrellas and coolers if you need. Tasty snack deliveries of cookies, local chips and popcorn (and coffee!!!) If you need a pick-me-up after a day at the beach. Bottom line - they really pay attention to EVERY detail here. I thought the other reviews were too good to be true, but a stay at the Mill House really is that spectacular. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
The Mill House Inn has upped the game for all B&Bs. The service was impeccable and the accommodations and food were astonishing. Every amenity or item you could have possibly forgotten to pack or could want is available. They offer complimentary cheese & charcuterie plates made to order daily from 1-10 pm. The dining room has locally sourced snacks & fresh pressed juices 24/7. My husband and I often found ourselves playing chess or Chinese checkers to wind down the evening. The day before we departed they left us with a bag of books to take home, all featuring local authors. Before we headed back to the airport we had breakfast and said our farewells to the front desk staff who we had gotten to know pretty well. If your going to be staying in East Hampton then this is the Inn for you!

Yelp
Great service. Excellent staff. Kelly and Dawn were very accommodating. Loved the morning breakfast. The room was beautiful and parking on premise was also a plus. I highly recommend this establishment. Barrett and Marlyn Slavin. We will return next October

Yelp
Very impressed. You cannot go wrong. The rooms are meticulously arranged, clean and comfortable. The food is delightful and the staff could not be nicer. The array of food and snacks is mind blowing. Without question this is the best bed and breakfast in east Hampton.

Yelp
Very cozy and beautiful place to stay. The staff is is great and very accommodating. The location is right next to the shops and beach, but yet in a nice and quiet area where you can enjoy the peaceful scenery. The breakfast in bed was amazing! They have a great menu to choose from and its brought to your room. I highly recommend it!!

Yelp
Service, location, space, comfort, and quality are all words that come to mind when I think of my recent stay at the Mill House Inn. At so many other properties in the US, lost is the art of hospitality - not the case here. I haven't received this level of attentive care and detail at another property in quite some time. Having never been to the Hamptons, I took Mom "out East" during her visit this past weekend. After all, she had been hearing me talk about this little slice of heaven for 10+ years. I was torn between (this property) and the Topping Rose House, but ultimately chose the Mill House based on the slightly lower per-night prices and the fact that I simply love East Hampton. From the moment we arrived at the property, we were treated with genuine care and fabulous service, plus invited to enjoy an array of homemade snacks (plus dog food and treats) and beverages at our disposal. The front desk advised that we make reservations for breakfast the next morning (served between 8:30 and 10:30AM), as the in-house dining room would quickly fill up. Our 600+ square foot room included: kitchenette (mini-fridge stocked with alkaline water and seltzer, microwave, sink, cabinets, utensils/cups/plates/silverware), dining table with four chairs, two large and super comfy sofas, spa robes, a fire place, TV, king-sized bed, shower with two heads, two sinks (one for each of us), a separate whirlpool bathtub, and a doggy bed for my pup. Breakfast at the Inn was quite extensive and generous. The ingredients were locally sourced and prepared with precision. Mom and I had the best weekend and would wholeheartedly recommend the Mill House Inn to anyone! We are very picky women, having traveled extensively, and cannot wait to return to the star of East Hampton (and the rest of the Hamptons, for that matter).

Yelp
Love the owners here. I spend 3 weeks a year in East Hampton for work and I love every minute of it. The owners are so courteous. They always have anything you want. The breakfast is to die for - here's the run down and you would be unwise to deviate from this menu: Shelly's Breakfast Week to Remember: Monday - Vermont Cabot Creamery Omelette Tuesday - Lobster Frirtata Wednesday - Poached Eggs on Brioche (to die for) Thursday - Blueberry Pancakes Friday - my sloppy joe scramble!! ....you're welcome

Yelp
What a wonderful place! it's perfectly located near the beach, restaurants and shops. I was here the weekend AFTER 4th of July this year and it was great! Fortunately, the crowds were few. I came here by myself and never felt like I needed company. The Mill House is the "THE" place to write, reflect or just be still in. It's the perfect bed and breakfast in the heart of E Hampton. As soon as I checked in, the staff assisted me with my bags and helped me rent a bicycle. This was my first time in the Hampton's and loved every minute! The locals are very friendly. I even made friends and they took me boating, Next time I visit, I will stay at the Mill House Inn for at least a week.

Yelp
Such a wonderful place! We had suite 31. Highly recommended.. Very homey feel right away... Everyone was really nice and pleasant. The breakfast was amazing! I had the lobster frittata, delicious..! My boyfriend got the blue plate special with french toast... Might as well have been both mine lol (yum!) Room service is the way to go.. Everything was clean...my cherry on top was the sheets and towels smelling and feeling so fresh and so clean clean clean! Didn't reek of closet room, musty smell - like other places. They had a whole area of home baked goodies in the front office that was included in the stay... Coffee lovers galore and fresh squeezed juices.. It may be a little pricey but, well worth the money.. Oh! The soaking tub - Serenity Air Bath, very relaxing! Two shower heads in the standup shower both, shower and tub perfect for lovebirds. :) we will be back!!

Yelp
Unbelievably delicious tacos for breakfast! The hand crafted corn tortillas is perfection. The way the tortilla cradles the fresh homemade chorizo (I'm still trying to deconstruct ingredients) with the perfect amount of heat! Even the side of potatoes melt in your mouth...scrumptious! From a local farm! Everything about the MHI is perfect! I can't wait to come back. Thank you for the best food and hospitality in the business!

Yelp
The Mill House Inn is a nifty little Bed & Breakfast in the Hamptons. I had no idea the place was here until I got there because the reason I stayed there was that my phone died therefore I didn't know the train schedule until I got to East Hampton train station where I found out the next westbound train wasn't until seven something in the morning and at the time it was three something in the morning so I had nowhere to go for four hours unless I wanted to waste a ton of money on a cab back to Nassau county which I assume would have cost around $300, about the same price as the room. So I just happened to be walking by when I saw the place, knowing nothing about it (again, no phone) and to my astonishment I was able to just walk into the reception area with no one there because the doors were unlocked; I was half expecting to be arrested for trespassing but apparently people don't lock doors in the Hamptons. So I called the number that was posted at the front desk using their phone and got an answering service, who called the manager who showed up about 15 minutes later. At first he said he didn't have a room available but then he said he could "move some stuff around" and eventually said he could get me a room. I was required to show my Covid vaccination card to get a room so I was glad I decided to keep it in my wallet. Apparently the only room available was a suite and he decided to let me have it for the price of a regular room. So it was about 4:30 AM by the time I finally checked into the room and I only slept about 2 hours by the time it was time to check out at 11 AM. I then told them I wanted to stay another night and they told me they'd only charge me for one night since I checked in so late, so I wound up paying about $300 for a stay that was supposed to be over $1000. As far as the food goes (breakfast is included) I had French toast the first morning and a goat cheese omelet the second. Both were good, I had a very minor complaint about the fact that the fruit mixture served with the French toast was cold but they microwaved it and all was well. I would have liked to eat in the dining room and not in my room but the room was closed due to Covid worries. I also had a dried fruit cup each day that was very good and a cappuccino and Mexican (spiced) hot chocolate, also good. Because my room was a suite (Room 11) it had a living room area and a bedroom area, each with a TV and a couch and ottoman in the living room. I was glad they had bottles of shampoo, conditioner, hand soap and body wash instead of those dumb little soaps that some hotels have. The shower had a regular shower head and one of those detachable hand-held shower heads, the second of which I did not use. The bathroom had a "room freshening spray" to cover up your poop scent if you were staying with another person but as I was alone I had no need for it, lol. In conclusion my stay was excellent with the exception of the 2 minor issues about the fruit mixture being cold and the dining room being closed, neither of which was enough to deter me from giving a 5 star review.

Yelp
Great b&b in a wonderful area. Breakfast is amazing. Service is what you would expect from a b&b in this area. Stayed two nights in the Captain's Quarters in the back house. Very noisy train drives by honking every five hours. If you're hoping to get some sleep, be sure to bring ear plugs. Also heard sirens all night along with an occasional jet plane flying over the town. Walls also seemed very thin, but it was at least interesting to hear what the neighbors were talking about. Overall, decent experience, great location, somewhat friendly staff - but something has to be done about the noise issues.

Florian N.

Yelp
I was looking forward to a trip to the Mill House Inn, but unfortunately, the global coronavirus epidemic is forcing us to change our travel plans. Unlike all other accommodations that I had to cancel, the Mill House Inn does not find that the COVID-19 pandemic is a reason for refunding money. I tried to cancel more than a week before arrival. Still, they insisted on accepting cancellations 30 days before arrival only according to their policy, even though the global spread of the virus is a very unusual situation. Be careful when booking as long as the pandemic is not over, as the hotel will not refund your money.

Satjit B.

Yelp
Classic. Amazing staff. The Chef is 5 stars. Will be back for sure. Feels like a second home.

Yelp
A true gem in the heart of East Hampton! From the staff to the location to the amazing locally sourced breakfast and the suite itself - everything was hands down phenomenal. I was also super impressed by the complimentary snacks, cheese plates, homemade ice cream and fresh pressed juices and vast library of DVDs. They even provided books by local authors. Well done MHI!

Yelp
Amazing! Room was beautiful and service was wonderful! When you enter, there is an fabulous snack bar with cheese and crackers, and the coolest drinks in glass bottles! The breakfast was spectacular! The best place to stay in east Hampton!

Yelp
Thanks to the staff at the Mill House Inn for their hospitality, kindness, and great food. As people who eat clean organic food, we also appreciated the filtered alkaline water and the locally grown clean food. We had a wonderful visit and were so happy, thanks again!

Yelp
We made an excellent choice in the Mill House Inn for our first visit to East Hampton. The accommodations, amenities and customer care were exceptional. I was predisposed to really like the place when they notified me the day before that they were upgrading our room. It was off season and they could and what a smart way to build customer loyalty. The breakfast was off the charts in both selection and deliciousness. The Inn serves house made cookies, house made kale chips, house made ice cream and other snacks all day long and will prepare a cheese and meat platter any time of the day at your request. The room is filled with house made air freshener and soaps. The staff are always courteous, friendly and ready to serve. J, the General Manger, learning of my desire to experience oysters and perhaps explore a nearby oyster farm, contacted a local farm that was quite happy to give a tour that culminated in fishing some oysters directly from their beds and eating them on the spot. I loved J's efforts on our behalf. This was a highlight of our trip. We would go back in a heartbeat and they have made it easy by presenting us with a $100 gift certificate upon arrival. Class operation, very comfortable, very welcoming. Thank you.

Yelp
I had a very nice stay here. I usually despise bed and breakfasts because I get a creepy vibe. It was so different here. Their breakfasts are amazing and the owners are incredibly sweet. I fell ill with a stomach virus one of the nights and headed down to go out and buy some pepto bismol. This was around 3 am. When I came downstairs, the owners came out and asked if they could go out and get me anything. I was very impressed, but of course I wasn't going to make them go and buy me medicine! I would definitely come back here the next time I visit the Hamptons.

Yelp
Thanks a million Jonathan! You just made our day- it was the best 31st anniversary ever! Robert and I will never forget your beautiful wife and baby. God bless you and your family always. The room was just perfect! After suffering with the loss if our home due to Sandy- these past few days gave us tranquility - you guys are the best! We will never forget you all. You made us feel special! Till next time.... Emma and Robert 10/22/2013

Yelp
This is one of the best bed and breakfast inn's I have ever been to! Very upscale and beautiful decor. I stayed in the captain's quarters suite, it was very cozy, fresh and clean, and just overall relaxing. Service and Staff was excellent, very friendly and welcoming. We went during the winter time and they actually delivered room service to us in a snow storm! (how cool) And They offer complimentary beverages, snacks, games and movies. Also Breakfast which is absolutely fresh and delicious. Ordered ommletes, brioche toast, fresh blueberry (real blueberries) and choc chip pancakes, vermont maple syrup, fresh brewed coffee, pineapple juice, and assorted home made Jams for the toast, we had it delivered in suite, so awesome. Bed was huge and soo comfortable, like sleeping on clouds. i cant wait to come back and this time in the summertime and hit the beach!! I most definitely recommend this fabulous place!!! The bathroom was elegant and stocked with everything you need including the kitchen and fridge. Stocked with drinks and snacks. Plan to stay here when your visiting the Hamptons, it's best!

Yelp
Pricy but very nice. Great staff, very friendly. Order your breakfast in your room. After dinner, get a movie from the desk, order some popcorn or ice cream, turn on the fireplace and enjoy a great evening.

Yelp
Five stars in every way. Beautiful accommodations to go along with an excellent breakfast. The staff must have graduated pleasant school with high honors. I'm sitting on the front porch of this charming inn now sipping from a cup of one of their delicious coffees.

Yelp
Beautifully appointed, friendly, comfortable, and as pastoral as it gets on what passes for the main drag in East Hampton, The Mill House Inn is just heavenly. The food is wonderful and the rooms are everything a B&B should be. Highly recommended.

Yelp
What a wonderful find. A friend recommended MHI to us when looking for a place on Long Island to celebrate our 34th anniversary. So thankful for the tip. We reserved one of their last rooms for the weekend and it was a darling, cozy queen room that was clean and comfy. We received a lovely plate of chocolate covered strawberries as an anniversary nod as well as a gift bag of books. Great turn down service and housekeeping. The morning breakfasts are 5 star - a full selection of gourmet choices of foods, juices, coffee, a wide selection of house-made hot sauces all with excellent service. There is also an all day/night spread of waters, juices, sodas etc with crackers, snacks, trail mix, hummus, olives etc and made to order anytime specialty popcorns, coffees, home made ice cream and charcuterie plates. MHI is in a great location on Main Street in East Hampton in walking distance to shops and restaurants. We highly recommend MHI and hope to return soon!

Yelp
We recent;y stayed at the Mill House for two very cozy nights. The management was so accommodating and caring. We stayed in a beautiful suite with fireplace and deck overlooking wooded landscape. Except for the faint and melancholic hoot of the train a couple of times, the place was very quiet. The train just added to the atmosphere. Breakfast was plentiful, varied and delicious. There was nothing we needed. Umbrellas at the ready if necessary on every porch. The perfect respite from the city.

Sheila M.

Yelp
My husband and I just returned form our stay at the MHI. This Inn will restore your faith in a magnificent quality experience. Our suite was immaculate, filled with all the details that make your stay a true home away form home. The grounds are beautiful and manicured. The staff is beyond excellent. They booked our restaurant reservations, delivered breakfast on time, cleaned our room at the time we requested and even offered to walk my dog. I actually believe that the Mill House staff is filled with the nicest people in East Hampton!!! This kind of service is amazing. The breakfasts were scrumptious, and the home made snacks were just perfect. We slept on a luxurious bed, ate like royalty and smiled brightly during our entire stay. This sweet haven is a must for everyones bucket list. WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Thank you Mill House Inn for a blissful and perfect stay! Sheila and Michael B

Yelp
love yelp... but somehow requiring a 'your review' field for which words could hardly do justice seems a bit, shall we say, constraining. the mill house inn was simply amazing.

Jorge B.

Yelp
first of all. all the reviews here are fake ! trains go by and its noisy. charming rooms but not worth the price bad weather ! 60 day cancelation policy. you paying no matter what !!! my girlfriend and i tried to cancel our trip out to hamptons after we found out 5 days in advance it was going to pour. no luck getting our money back and the front desk immediately put a double charge to hold and room occupancy after we call to cancel to make sure they had the money and us to dispute. policy is policy they said but they can bend the rules if they feel like it ?!?!?! i tried but i guess i was too rude to favor a "bend the rules moment". they said if we can rent out the room they might give us a credit. after a few hours are argument they had called back with exciting news they have only 1 room left open, and if filled i would get my money back. i called a few times after, and even in the morning but they said they cannot give me money back even if they did occupy the room. thx for nothin! this place isnt cheap. and a policy like that isnt far. if you super rich go for it. else, i wouldnt book this place unless you know for sure your going and weather is good. im sooooo angry about the fact that i canceled, they charged me anyway and still booked the room for someone else.

Samriti G.

Yelp
I stayed in this inn with my friend and was very impressed with this place. Starting with location -one block from Main Street. Got upgraded to a suite which was gorgeous. The main thing that impressed me though was the level of service and all day free snack bar containing freshly baked cookies, fresh juices, coconut water, cheese etc. when we told them we were going to come back and watch movies they put popcorn for us in our rooms. Wonderful experience and I would def come here again.

Kym K.

Yelp
Awesome stay. Experience unlike any other and can't wait to return, This is not just your 'run of the mill' B&B... very exceptional staff, hospitality, warm and inviting rooms. Stayed over the New Years holiday with a group of GF's and had a wonderful experience. The breakfasts are outstanding and have never experienced such a wonderful menu at a B&B - besides the vast selection, the fruit tray with the champagne sauce is amazing - kudos to the Chef! The best place to bring in the New Year (or any time you want to get away and really relax)!

I've been here a few times before and each visit gets better and better. My only regret is that we don't come back more often! Luxury and ease at its best, staff and service are exquisite! Always recommend it!

Yelp
Thank you for a lovely time. My wish for a trip down memory lane has been fulfilled. The trip was everything we had hoped for and so much more. Thank you for your hospitality.
