We were attending a show at Mission Ballroom so I wanted to try someplace I had never been before. I found Millers & Rossi, and it looked interesting. Their website was very full of detail, but as I learned in this instance, detail doesn't equal clarity.
One thing about the website is the bothersome pop up advertising corporate event reservations. Honestly, that did turn me off a bit, but I I pushed through to see what was available (PLEASE get rid of that annoying advertisement, it feels like an old man site).
So I ascertained they had two areas, a lounge and the Ohani room. With those two choices, why wouldn't I choose the latter? Well, after arriving, here's why. All it is is just a kind-of tiki bar, but with very loud, non-exotica music, a couple of tables, four seats at the bar and an extremely shallow side wall bar type thing. It is perfect for a worker with a cheese sandwich and a drink, but for three adults looking for a place to have cocktails, some apps, and talk? Absolutely not appropriate. This is where the hostess wanted us to sit. Seriously... I asked if we couldn't sit at the bar, and the bartender said we could. Seriously, I would think the hostess could have recognized that wasn't a good spot without the customer pointing it out.
So we sat at the bar and selected drinks from the menu. I don't remember what they were, other than overly complicate, had to be made at the lounge bar, a bit pricey and very watery. Meh, at best.
We ordered "tapas" which were just average apps. The caprese sliders were an interesting thought, but the buns were a bit stale and hard. We tried both the chicken and beef empanadas and my suggestion is don't. The beef was mushy and tasted processed, and the chicken was just blah. The potstickers were fine, just like out of the frozen Costco food section. We had also ordered the crab cakes but they never showed up. We weren't charged so no harm no foul.
I know this is a rather disparaging review, especially for three stars. To be honest, I would have loved to sit back in the lounge (saw it when I went to use the restroom). I am also a big tiki guy and would have loved if the Ohana room would be operated better. I don't expect tiki drinks on the menu, but other than a bunch of bamboo and some other decorations, I don't know what the motif really was supposed to be. When I asked about sitting in the back, the hostess said we had reservations for the Ohana room, "so..." that was my answer.
I do know I won't try to eat here again. The food, though not expensive is just not very good. Maybe I will give the lounge another shot, but to be honest, there are so many places to try and not that much time in life.
