Anyone who know my reviews on Yelp knows that I do not give 5-stars unless completely deserved. Millrock completely deserves all five.
My wife, son and I arrived after our drive up for a ski weekend. We had heard that it gets crowded (and they do not take reservations), so we stopped in at around 5:30pm on a Friday night, checked in, and then left to drop off our stuff where we were staying. We returned roughly 40 minutes later, and their "45-minutes" estimated wait was just about spot on.
Service was good ... they know how to handle crowds. However, the nice-casual atmosphere wasn't about service ... it was all about the outstanding food.
We shared three dishes among us ... a pizza, the special stuffed veal chop and a smoked salmon and mushroom pasta. Let me tell you ... we couldn't decide which we loved more. The pizza was perfectly made with a nice semolina crust. The sauce had just the right balance of sweetness and tomato-tartness. The stuffed veal was wonderfully cooked ... nice and tender, with a chunk of asiago and a portobello inside. If there was anything they could have done better, it was to get the asiago to melt without over-cooking the medium-rare veal. The home-run of the three was the pasta. Unreal flavors with the right touch of cream to balance the saltiness of the smoked salmon. The mushroom flavors complemented the fish ... well OMG. We loved them. And with a $16 half carafe of house red, everything was just perfect.
Desserts were a wonderful chocolate mousse, which was not too sweet (perfect) and a flourless chocolate cake that was basically all dark-chocolate ganache. Again ... not overly sweet, so the chocolates were front and center, rather than sugar. I had a decaf coffee, which was surprisingly strong.
Our check for three was $136 inclusive of a generous gratuity, making the experience just great. I wish we could go back more frequently, but the 2+ hour drive makes Millrock out of reach unless we return to Windham for some more skiing.
Seriously ... a wonderful experience.
