8 of the Best New Coffee Shops in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"With just 150 square feet of space, this cafe from the owners of nearby cocktail bar Kiesling has limited capacity for standing room to enjoy a maple rosemary latte. The shop is inspired by standing-room-only cafes that Ashley Davidson would frequent in Italy, where she went to school, and where her partner/co-owner Carlo Liburdi’s parents immigrated to Detroit from." - Monica Williams

Google
Very cute and stylish little place with a walk up window. No indoor seating, so go when the weather is nice! Coffee was good. A smaller size, which is normal for a place like this.

I love walking to this coffee shop on my morning walks :) I usually get a cold brew with almond milk - $5.50. Pretty reasonable and they have nice outdoor seating. I wish they had some pastries, but the employees are always really chill and it’s easy to pop in and out! They have iced water outside on hot days and cute tables where you can sit. It’s nice to see folks out there chatting and enjoying the coffee and weather. Overall, I still rank the coffee itself below Cafe Sous Terre and the Roost - it’s a little more bitter - but it has a special place for me since it’s in my neighborhood. It’s a solid spot. I’ll definitely be coming back while I live here!

Google
This place is great! Service is excellent! Coffee is strong and delicious! Milk they use is of a superb quality. Interior is lovely, there is a bar in the back that works in the evening. The seating area is outdoors. It’s a perfect place to chill outside, lots of trees and brick buildings around, atmosphere is cool and nice. Will recommend for sure

Google
Lovely place! Tiny, with pickup counter and no seating so plan on ordering and taking out. The coffee quality is superb and the barista was a pro. A+ experience for me.

Google
Very cool little spot, with very friendly staff. The best place in Detroit to get an early morning coffee.

Google
Just stopped by for the first time. I ordered the cardamom vanilla oat milk latte, and the barista, Emily, was gracious enough to make it in a mug for me! It was amazing, very smooth, very flavorful. I will definitely be craving it later! The atmosphere is very small, there is no indoor seating, but there is plenty of greenery inside, there are a couple outdoor seating options, including a window with stools outside. I will more than likely be stopping by here again!

Google
Was a little surprised they didn’t have the new trends in coffees to offer- lavender lattes or orange tonic coffees- but they did the staples well. What they lacked in beverages choices, they made up for in ambience and service. The spot was very hip, and the big open windows gave it a European feel.

Google
While I love their matcha, I think it’s one of the better (if not best) ones in the city, every time I have been the service was not great. I have been a handful of times and each time the barista’s friends were crowding the tiny cafe space, the barista is not friendly and hardly spoke more than a few grunts, or is doing something in the space behind the cafe and you’re left standing in the cafe for a hot minute before they notice you.

Yelp
Wonderful little hidden gem of a cafe! Beautiful space, great coffee, great service, and a charming patio. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Several friends recommended this caffe! I stopped in before 8 a.m. and was serviced immediately! The interior has a warm feel- I wanted a caramel macchiato, but they were out of caramel, so I tried the cinnamon honey option. The barista was very pleasant and helpful. They use recyclable materials, which is great! They had coffee options and croissants available this morning. They have street parking.

Yelp
This classic caffe is stunning and especially when the weather is great and you can enjoy the outside seating. It's no frills and extras but they make a fabulous cup of coffee with an amazing attitude. Every morning I've been here I feel ready to start my day. Just an espresso with a great bean.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem. No seating unless it's a nice day on the corner/patio area. they've got good weekly hours (7AM) and I visited religiously for a while before work Monday-Thursday (open @ 8AM Fri) . I really like the online ordering aspect as that's not too common around here. They often collab w businesses and have local things for sale like beans and sometimes small foods. Big fan and always worth a go to. I tend to get the same thing wherever i go so id recommend their brev. latte w some syrup+honey. (:

Yelp
Coffee was served with sour old cream. Worst coffee ever. Was given a line of BS. Threw it out. Never again. Lady next to us said it all when she seen hers.

Yelp
I love this place SO much. Always a great latte and delicious house made syrups. Can't wait for it to warm up to chill outside! Keep up the good work.

Yelp
Beautiful vibe on a close to perfect Sunday morning during Memorial Day weekend. Staff was welcoming, courteous, and personable. There is seating outside during this season which was where their customers were sitting. The counter/ordering area inside is a bit tight however w/that limitation it seems to encourage staff to be efficient w/orders coming in. I ordered a dirty chai latte w/oat milk. Very delicious. If you're in the area or wanna check out a new cafe this one is it.

Yelp
Even on the coldest days this winter, the Milwaukee Caffe staff puts love (heart-shapes) in my lattes, even though they're freezing from the walk-up window, and they know I'm gonna put the lid on and jump back in the car. That's representative of their attention to their customers and the coffee they serve. I've been picking up coffee regularly, and sometimes treats, since I moved nearby in the fall. They have a super solid regular staff who takes good care of customers and knows their stuff. They've recommended to-go cocktails that they sell from attached Kiesling, went and found me a bottle of bubbly from the back, and made me laugh on some stressful mornings. I love their perfect menu of coffee drinks, rotating coffee on tap, and tea selection. I've seen them do pour-overs and cold coffee drinks, too. They've sent me the right direction on bagged coffee to take home, too. I've enjoyed other coffee purveyors popping up here, too, Espy, and especially Paradise Valley. They've been open on holidays, too, which has made for a point of light on tough days during the isolation of COVID-times.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick cup of excellent coffee just after 7 am, before beginning a pre-dawn walk in the city. What a find! Our barista was kind, efficient and knew her beans! I had an exquisite cup of hot, smooth as silk, freshly brewed coffee. My companion enjoyed his rich Mocha with a local favorite: Calder's milk in the glass container. Prices are entirely reasonable. And BONUS - if you get there before 8 AM, coffee is a dollar off! We took seats at one of the small, sidewalk tables, sipped and watched patrons as they came in to quickly grab online orders before starting their day. It was delightful experience that we will repeat!

Yelp
I had one of the best matcha lattes of my life and the baristas were friendly and conversational. Overall a great experience: if I lived nearby, I would be visiting often.

Yelp
Finding this cute, modern cafe on a whim was a pleasant surprise. Located in the up and coming New Center area of Detroit, the walk-up window is right next to the Kiesling bar. The cafe offers patio seating along the street providing a great atmosphere to enjoy a coffee date in Detroit. The inside of the cafe is chic and airy, while offering a variety of coffee and baked goods to enjoy. The prices were as expected for specialty coffees in the Detroit area. The mocha I ordered was good, and the staff was friendly. Visiting during COVID, mask wearing and social distancing were appropriately adhered to and coffee lids were even handed to you via tongs (so employees did not touch the top)--a nice touch in my opinion. A quaint local cafe to check out and see the growth of businesses in Detroit.

Yelp
Cute but we didn't really enjoy the taste of the drinks we had (latte & hot chocolate) & nowhere to sit

Yelp
Absolutely amazing little walk up coffee spot! The staff here are so friendly and the coffee and drinks handmade and outstanding. My recommendations: The cortado Pour over coffee Flavored lattes I also highly recommend their simply syrup vs sugar in your coffee. So good! Expect to pay between $3-$5 per drink. They also have a great selection of cocktails and pastries to go! 10/10 would come here anytime

Yelp
Mocha was made with the wrong milk which was fine, but it tasted sour. Had it remade with right milk and it still tasted sour. For one to pay $6 for a mocha, it's only fair that it's made with semi-fresh ingredients or at least one would hope. It also has a funny smell to it. If there are no quality checks, there's an even bigger issue at hand.

Yelp
this place is just lovely! i went last month, and the place was beautiful, the employee that took my order was friendly, & my drink was so good (i've been craving it ever since - iced honey matcha). this place is more ideal to go in the spring/summer, as to its tiny inside & most of the seating is outdoors. so if you like hanging out in cafes for hours, probably not a good idea come wintertime. otherwise, charming atmosphere & kind workers where you can enjoy a drink in the sunshine!

Anna F.

Yelp
Iced matcha latte was basically just a cup of milk. Chai is also store bought from a carton so not worth getting.

Yelp
The best latte in the city. Cute, tucked away spot. The mocha is divine. Great stop on a bike tour, if you're into exploring North End and Milwaukee Junction areas.

Yelp
What an adorable little hidden gem! I was driving by and saw two people sitting in their cute pastel minty green seats outside. I had to make a u-turn to give the place a try, even though I already had my coffee for the day. I'm so glad I did! Nothing like a caffe that can make you feel like you just took a trip abroad. Adorable decor, and most importantly quality tasting menu items. I enjoyed a honey + cinnamon latte with macadamia nut milk and a cinnamon + sweet potato scone. Will definitely return, and have already begun spreading the word about this new find. I highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is great for a quick coffee although I can see some improvements like more syrups to make them stand out and make the coffee something you wanna go out of your way to get, another thing that would elevate this place to a 4 star would be heating up the pastries, i have been here many times they've never offered, I found myself longing for a warmed up ham and cheese croissant from Starbucks, the pastries here are very good but no one wants a cold croissant! Thats how easy it is to elevate the experience but here I am with an incredible pastry with cold cheese. The seating area is great! Its a perfect little place to sit and have a coffee with a friend and the staff is always nice and friendly and the prices are very reasonable, they do go a little heavy on the syrups so beware

Yelp
Pink peppercorn latte with an extra shot of espresso! Truly unique and my new love! Staff is amazing, kind and helpful! Perfect spot for hospital employees that need a good coffee on the go, the setup is perfect

Yelp
Open early and great coffee. I just got a drip coffee and it was uniquely flavored. I enjoyed it

Yelp
This little window is the most delightful hidden spot. And the coffee and matcha were spot on for an coffee snooty. The crew working were warm and friendly. I'll be back pronto.

Alexis F.

Yelp
I would love to give this place a 5 star! Really cute place but the times that they say they are open, aren't accurate. Second time I came here and they weren't open yet! But they were there. They could've just made my coffee real quick instead of putting out chairs. She said they open at 8 and it 9. It's not like I was there right when they opened.

Kirk B.

Yelp
This is a great walk up coffee window! It's beautiful aesthetically and the coffee was delicious. My favorite is the iced cortado.

Amber J.

Yelp
Really amazing espresso and nice staff. Like to come here for a little pick me up or sweet treat.
