14 Fantastic Specialty Markets in East Portland | Eater Portland

"This Rohingya-owned market, which also has a location in Beaverton, supplies a variety of international goods, predominantly from India, Southeast Asia, and Africa. In the cooler, Palestinian Nabulsi cheese cozies up to Italian mortadella, while the market’s plentiful shelves hold everything from Indomie instant noodles to boxed fufu mixes. One of the market’s big draws is the butcher section, with halal meats including fresh and frozen chicken, lamb, and goat. Fish cutting services are available on Mondays and Tuesdays." - Janey Wong

I did notice that the customer service is a little off but they weren’t blatantly rude however when me And my daughter went in to shop, I quickly found the najaar Turkish coffee with medium cardamom I have been looking for my favorite coffee ever, I was quite happy then I went to counter area see if they had the Turkish style coffee pot and they actually had the sizes and they were very pretty but there were two men behind the counter and they were talking and didn’t much care to pay attention to me and I had to say excuse me can I please get help, and he handed me two coffee pot sizes I asked for and the smallest one had damage in the bottom the interior ceramic was flaking off m, soi bought the medium size and I love it, but the guy wasn’t rude, he was fine, aside from not giving me the attention initially I think customers deserve, my daughters were a bit excited at the cool candies, then asked to see their selection of resin incense and was surprised at a new incense resin I had never seen before it is glorious and smells so divine and great price I bought a box of sandalwood incense sticks which turned out not to smell very good after all, but after ringing up the stuff I thought that cost a bit more than it should have and after getting home realized I was charged twice for one item so this is a concern since many other customers are having the same issue, stealing from a customer is just as bad as a customer stealing! So many think I’ll go to the other market in Gresham there is a small halal market on division and Main Street and the owner is so sweet!

I have been coming to this store for a long time along with so many of my friends and family, today I went in the store and was looking to buy kids toys during Ramadan. I seen these big egg toys in a box for $1.99 each and grabbed 10 of them. The guy that usually stands at the cashier all the time went behind me and snuck a different sticker with $2.99 and I said hey the sticker says $1.99 and he said no it’s $2.99. Honestly for someone to do this and not even honor the price when I asked since it’s his fault or since he wants to be greedy he said no. So I will be letting many of family and friends know about the kind of people working at this store and again not to mention it’s Ramadan! It’s haram to do that to people and think you can change the price for a toy because you seen me grab 10 of them. Anyhow I left my cart full for them to deal with putting the items all back. You lost my business and I hope many more!

Google
The place is a disaster. Came to get some fresh meat, but everything seemed old and expired. Employees lacked basic hygiene requirement while handling food and meat. They also charged higher rates and some items were also scanned multiple times. One employee was spitting chewing tobacco in a bottle while handling food fresh bread, and other produce for customers. I would not recommend this place and will definitely not come back.

They had exactly what we were looking for! Thank you Penzey's for recommending them!

Google
Would not allow trained service animal in store. Ignorance was one thing but the disrespectful attitude telling me to call the police I want to get the f out this bald angry guy definitely needs to have a job somewhere where he doesn’t interact with other people with that kind of attitude. I wonder how often this clerk loses customers for their business I need to seem like a nice place other than the attitude but I could see why they didn’t have super high rating. They really needed replace that ball dude with somebody that doesn’t actively lose the business money

Google
Very unprofessional about opening and closing time. Also the cashier guy is kind of rude

They have good variety of Asian goods. SE Asian and Middle Eastern goods. Also fresh meat comes in weekly and sells fast. Good quality. Best market neighborhood grocery store.

Google
Great place for ethnic food since as Indian, middle eastern, and some Asian products. It’s a great place but it’s compact and full of products. Lanes are small and prices are a little high but it’s understandable.

Yelp
Great place, run by immigrants for the immigrants. Very good combination of south East Asian food and African/middle eastern collection of spices and fish focused to serve Muslim population. Has hisha and many other rare fish. Small collection of veggie but many choices of flat bread frozen and fresh.

Yelp
I love this shop for all my Indian groceries when I get on my Indian kicks of cooking. Service is friendly the space is a bit tight. They do have a halal butcher in the back. They have fresh vegetables that may not be common in other grocery stores.

Yelp
We have been getting lamb here for one of our favorite Persian dishes, and it's been great! I've been getting nice herbs from them too, and they also have good quality bay leaves for a VERY good price! Seriously.

Yelp
The cashier was very rude. He kept saying he won't return items before I even bought anything or asked about returns. He was very rude over all. There was definitely stereotyping. If you work with black communities why hate them?If you value your customers don't let your employees disrespect and stereotype them. Do better!

Yelp
Very friendly and helpful staff. Prices are reasonable. Decent assortment of variety. International items. I will be going there again.

Yelp
I just found this market to pick up a few I gradients for our weekly international cooking adventure- this week is Yemen! The people at this store are so incredibly kind and helpful, and there are amazing treasures throughout the store! I found what I needed, got some great advice on making Mandi, and left feeling like they had just welcomed me into their home. If you haven't checked out this place- do it! They were wonderful!

Yelp
Mingala is a great halal grocery store even if you don't eat halal just know the quality of the fresh meat here and frozen is way better than you can get elsewhere. They have also a great selection of Middle Eastern, African and Asian foods, spices and groceries that cannot be found elsewhere.

Yelp
This is a Halal butcher shop with lots of different ethnic foods. They have baked goods and Savory Foods for takeout

Yelp
I have not been to this store. But writing this review to support any person who makes efforts to earn a clean income from hard work. To me it Looks like you still love your country of origin you keep the name of your store in your language. Sorry to read some nasty negative hateful reviews from your own land people. Sorry about the genocide news of Burma, the world stands for your side and justice will be served.

Yelp
It's cheap halal meat. But you get what you pay for. The beef if poor quality. I made the mistake of buying lamb here once and I'll never make that mistake again. They have a good assortment of all other groceries and spices. This is usually the last shop I go to if I can't find things at other places.

Yelp
I've visited this place a couple times and I don't recommend unless you really need to. Place can get busy and there isn't much room to move around. Employees don't seem so friendly. Place need to be more organize and clean. There is parking out front but can get busy especially with other shops nearby.

Yelp
Keep your eyes on that register the cashier will inflate prices and if you don't catch him it's your loss. First and last and I'm taking my business to a deserving Nepal store down the street at 122nd & Glisan. Witnessing a lady arguing with him because they bought fresh meat only to find out the cuts were more fat and less meat. He is an immigrant taking advantage of 99% of the customers that are immigrants with language barrier. I'm not putting up with that! Reporting to AG consumer protection hotline is the least I can do.

Yelp
Love supporting this Rohingya owned business. Place is like a cultural center for East side immigrants. So worth going here if you can't make the trek to West side Indian grocers. Stock is limited but they do carry fresh produce and a range of snacks from Arabic speaking countries to Cantonese.

Yelp
I like this market and the folks working here are always friendly. BUT I've had this happen several times-- called to find out if they had an item, told yes they did, drove over only to find that they did not have the item. I'm thinking that sometimes English fluency could be the issue along with busyness in the store when I happened to call.

Yelp
The staff here is super nice and incredibly helpful. I loved it. The aisles are a bit narrow and towering with stuff but that is the draw for me. Meat is limited but I'm told it's all 100% halal.

Yelp
The best Indian, Pakistani, South East Asian market in Portland and beyond. Excellent prices, excellent basmati rices by the sack, fresh CURRY LEAVES (never been able to locate anywhere else in PDX), any and every type of dal you can think of, frozen naan, frozen paratha, a butcher with goat, lamb, with ethnically correct cuts (necks etc), any spice you need. A+++++ AND The owner is a true gentleman and very helpful.

Yelp
When we arrived to Portland we saw that store. Store name is Mingala, that means is nice, good etc...in Burmese language. We really happy that can get good Burmese grocery. But, when we get inside store, we got totally wrong. Because, that cashier and employees are so rude to us. Cashier said himself that I'm Rohingya without I asked question to him. Look like he really hates Burmese people. So, why using that store name with Burmese pronunciations? I want to say to Burmese people that don't go there. Actually, Rohingya are not from Burma. They are from Bangladesh. So, we called Bengali.

Yelp
Tons of great ingredients I haven't been able to find anywhere else; including a huge selection of frozen fish... Crazy stuff I've never heard of. If you like ramen (like the cheap kind in a bag), go just to try the different types. They also have a nice little prepared food section. Everything was reasonably priced, and the store was very clean and neat.

Yelp
Staff is very helpful. Initially I felt intimidated because I didn't even know how to recognize what I was looking for - the staff helped me find everything I needed and then made recommendations for other items. Love having this market so close.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood market stocked to the brim with Indian, Burmese, and Thai treats. My favorite things to stock up on are frozen garlic naan, dried lentils and garbanzo beans, a variety of instant teas/coffees, ramen, and a variety of canned drinks (coconut, mango, real sugar coke, etc). The service is always friendly and helpful and I love supporting this little local business. The first time you visit, make sure you take time to browse the whole store as you never know what you might find. Willamette Week did a write up on them last year and here's what they had to say: "Myanmar native Yusuf Iqbal and his partners had trouble finding many of the ingredients they needed for Burmese home cooking. So they opened a small market in an outer-Southeast strip mall less than a year ago, stocking it with everything from dried betel leaves and ngapi fish pastes to fried bean snacks. Within a month, their Indian, Thai and Pacific Islander neighbors were clamoring for the international quickie mart to stock their own homelands' goodies. It did, and now Mingala has arguably the most eclectic, well-priced selection of Indian and East Asian goods on Portland's east side, including a rainbow of dirt-cheap lentils, very fresh spices, desi snacks, and frozen shrimp and fish. Plus, Iqbal runs his own impressive halal, cut-to-order meat operation sourced from local cows and goats in the back of the shop. "From A-to-Z, we do it," he says proudly, opening a huge walk-in fridge to show off an entire half of a cow hanging from a meat hook. "We look at the animal, if we like it, we slaughter it ourselves [at a USDA facility], butcher it and custom-cut it for you." Beat that, 7-Eleven. KC. Shopping list: Dried lily bulbs, mango pickles, frozen samosas, custom-cut beef ($3.99 a pound)."

Yelp

Yelp
Awesome market! Had a combination of Thai, Indian and southeast Asian ingredients. Bought ingredients for a Burmese fermented tea leaf salad. Lots of hard to find ingredients and a decent little grocery section. Found galangal, turmeric, and other goodies. Worth the trek if you don't want to head to H-mart or Tualatin.

Yelp
A wonderful little international market, well-stocked with Indian, Thai and Burmese foods. Love the variety of spices and even fresh vegetables which are hard to find locally, like Taro root, Indian eggplant. The frozen foods section is a favorite - especially samosas, parathas. The lentils and dals are aplenty - urad dal, chana dal, moong dal, plus a variety of rices. One of my top favorites (although it is not guaranteed to be available every visit) is the Curry Leaves. Also, the betel leaves and sweet paan are nice to have. I found citron leaves once and was thrilled to be able to use it in recipes. Take the time to look around, there is always something interesting in this unassuming store. I appreciate the friendly and courteous service!
