The Best Chinese Restaurants in and Around New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Tucked away by a Lakeview shopping center, this Cantonese restaurant is open, airy, and offers outside seating. Chef Ming channels recipes from his Hong Kong birthplace with Cantonese options like shrimp with lobster sauce, shrimp lo mein, and salt and pepper pork. Regulars miss the lunch specials, as for now Ming’s is open only for dinner." - Beth D’Addono

Where to Find New Orleans’s Best Dumplings | Eater New Orleans

"Tucked away in a Lakeview shopping center, Ming’s is a popular spot open for takeout, delivery and dining in (with a reservation). All of the restaurant’s current dumpling offerings are deep fried, including cho cho, an order of six fried wontons stuffed with shrimp, barbecue pork, and onions. Check the website because the abbreviated menu changes, sometimes including fried and steamed dumplings." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Absolutely delicious!!!! Omg I highly recommend it’s better then any Chinese place in New Orleans, that’s a fact!

B Fowler

Google
Staff is super friendly and helpful. The food was ok, not as much flavor as I expected and a bit more on the explained side for the prices. My favorite thing was the chicken fried rice which actually had good flavor and different vegetables. It’s the one thing I would go back for.

Google
Amazing and Delicious! Their egg rolls are special! Unlike any others you have ever had. So many goodies wrapped up in that egg roll, it could be a meal unto itself! The Shrimp and lobster sauce had layers of flavor! Again, unlike any other you have ever had. Delicious! The XO Beef had a depth of beef flavor that was rich and warm! The veggies in this dish were crisp and fresh! Lastly, we had the Kung Pao Chicken. It was full of crunchiness...didnt disappoint! It's a small restaurant, owned locally. Very friendly service. It's a must for returning!

Google
10/10 for Chinese food. Can’t miss with anything on menu. Always more food than you can eat. Every patron leaves with to-go plates. Amazing and fresh to order.

Saadi Arcement

Google
Everything is made from scratch and tasted amazing!! Super friendly staff and very quick with food! 11/5 stars, would come back for the crab ragoon alone.

Zachary Ciolino

Google
I really loved the food here. It's pricey but the quantity of food given to you is huge. I have been snacking on the fried rice for 2 days now.

Daniel Stepel (The last Baby Boomer)

Google
I have never seen a place that looks less like a Chinese restaurant than this place. Once inside I got the vibe of a place that is directly in between a high end restaurant and a take out joint. I did like the wide menu selections. I suggest you go full on Chinese style and start with soup and a veggie dish. The baby Bok Choy was excellent. Despite the mix signal I got on the decor I will say overall my meal was very good.

Google
Yuck. Not good. Had it twice. 7 different items. The second time, I ordered hot and sour soup, pork lo mein and 2 egg rolls. $37 dollars. Not including tip. Everything was not good. Please disclose if there's shrimp in the egg roll.

Yelp
Food is fresh and great and the service is the best. Small lakefront site not a big place where they lose you
google avatar

Darlene B.

Yelp
The food is amazing, it smells just as delicious as it looks in this photo. The service is great. The food came out hot and fast. This place is highly recommended. I go often, and will be back soon.
google avatar

Michele A.

Yelp
Was amazing; we had the best time. Service was great and fast, the portions are humongous if you haven't eaten here before you It is a must try it. Mings is probably the best we've ever had up there with P.F. Chang's.

Leslye T.

Yelp
Waited 1.5 to get seated. The food was super salty. Was not eatable at all. Horrible service. Waitress had a horrible attitude. Do not waste your time or money at this place
google avatar

Shelley S.

Yelp
So. I purchased $98 worth of food. Asked if they could give me duck sauce. Assured me it was all in the bag. What a joke. Haven't tried the food yet but was not happy with the attitude from the owner. Will not return.

Yelp
Ming's is a relaxing spot in lakeview where you can find some great Chinese food. I went on a Wednesday night and was seated immediately. For an appetizer, the pork dumplings were a good start. The order came with eight dumplings and they were tasty! For my entree, I ordered the general tso chicken and it comes with white rice. The chicken came with a lot of sauce and it was the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. It is hard to find good Chinese food, but this spot is one of my favorites! There is a happy hour that ends at 6pm. Sadly, happy hour ended before I got there. But I will be back for happy hour and to enjoy the nice outside area!

Yelp
Great food! Serving sizes are great. The food is always hot and served fresh. I would recommend Mings to anyone.

Alena J.

Yelp
I liked the ambiance and the food was delicious. The staff were very attentive and nice. Would recommend.

Jimmy H.

Yelp
Great food... great service! Their egg rolls are the best!! Their shrimp with lobster sauce and their beef with broccoli are both fantastic! I also really like their combination fried rice.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere and attentive service. Just found the food average. Food was beautiful presented. My favorite was the bok choy but didn't find the food make me want to come back.
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
All the entrees we ordered were not HOT when they arrived to our table. Service not good either. One Entrée we ordered was completely forgotten. We had to wait another 30 mins for that dish to arrive. We have been here before with no issues, so we were very disappointed.
google avatar

Kevin G.

Yelp
Ordered takeout. The wonton soup and egg rolls are the best in the city. It's worth going there just for that. The rest of the food is good. You can tell they use better ingredients but the general tso chicken lacked flavor. The Lo Mein and beef and broccoli were excellent. It was a little pricey but again you can tell they use fresher ingredients and the portion size was good, no complaints there.

Yelp
Pretty cool duck off spot. The food is okay, nothing to write home about. The service was average. I was almost applaud that no one told us "Bye, thank you for coming..." Then boom, as we're almost out the door, there it was. Thank you for that. My hubby enjoyed his boneless chicken, but I ordered Shrimp and Broccoli and let me just say, "While it was definitely Shrimp and Broccoli, it wasn't no damn Shrimp and Broccoli!!! It was more of a garlic flavor/garlic based dish. Good just not what I was expecting.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Pretty good little place. Nothing to write home about but portions are big and staff was nice. A little expensive but it's New Orleans. What're you gonna do?

Jacob F.

Yelp
Ordered take out me and my girlfriend $45 for two entrees food was bland i ordered kung pao chicken No spice what so ever barely any flavor just not worth it Panda Express is more enjoyable She had chicken fried rice and it just looked boring and a very average taste just no flavor on anything

AveMaria G.

Yelp
refused to sit two people at a four top because they were going to be busy, but said the two people at another two top were about to leave. Well twenty minutes later they hadn't left and we were still standing waiting for a table. This was extremely rude . needless to say we left and probably won't return.

Laurie S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in town! The hot and sour soup is divine. Quaint, cottage setting. Service is usually pretty good.

Ashley G.

Yelp
I love everything about Ming's! My absolute must have (2) is Crab Rangoon, best ever. Every dish is made fresh and everything is always delicious.
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
Mings offers quality Chinese food and great service. The crab rangoons are the best I've ever had and the hot & sour soup has a great flavor. We have tried many yummy entrees such as Mongolian beef.

Holly R.

Yelp
I read some of the reviews and at first I was turned off and I thought about going somewhere else for dinner but I decided to try Ming's anyway and I'm soooo glad I did! I got the crab Rangoon, the garlic shrimp, the beef and broccoli and the Kung pao chicken!! It was All delicious!! I will definitely go back!!
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
Ming's is our go to Chinese restaurant. It's close to home, has reasonable prices for a weekday meal, and the food is fresh.
google avatar

Will H.

Yelp
Honestly, we were not very pleased with the quality of the food considering the prices. We ordered a few standard menu items that were just disappointing. The food, for lack of a better description, did not seem authentic or fresh. For example, we ordered the General Tso's chicken. It seemed like the chicken was cooked separately and then just thrown on top of a general Tso's sauce. The only item we were really satisfied with were the egg rolls. It might be worth trying another Chinese restaurant if other options are available.

S. B.

Yelp
If I could give a zero I would. If you notice the serving size for takeout, they are getting smaller, but the price is either going up or the same. For instance, the size of the containers, for example, pork fried rice, as an entree size, is now in a container that the white rice used to come in as a side for your shrimp and lobster sauce, pepper steak, etc. The shrimp and lobster sauce, tasted "funny" yesterday, like the shrimp were old and mushy. The white rice for 2 dishes was in a small container with about enough for 1 dish. If you ask them to do anything special, not exceptional, they refuse. They are really becoming an arrogant joint, that is only open 4 hours a day anyway. Again, August Moon uptown is much better, and the people are nice.

Yelp
Nice quiet, easy to get to location in Lakeview! Really good Chinese food. Nice bar and easy parking
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed. I've been trying to find good Chinese food in New Orleans and unfortunately this is not it. I'll give them 2 stars for properly cooking their proteins, but the flavors were so bizarrely off that it was genuinely confusing. Singapore Noodles are supposed to have vegetables, scrambled egg, bean sprouts, pepper and Mings served curried rice noodles with shrimp and chicken and nothing else - curry and salt were the only flavors. The Kung pao chicken tasted spicy but had no flavor, definitely didn't have any Szechuan peppercorn and the sauce was entirely wrong. The chicken was served with 1/4 cup rice in a tiny container so there's not even enough for the leftovers (which is fine since I won't be eating them). This is not it.
google avatar

Reba J.

Yelp
So very good. The Mandarin chicken (and that amazing sauce), Cho Cho and Kale were divine!
google avatar

Amita R.

Yelp
I finally went to Ming's today!! I have tried to go several times but they close in between lunch and dinner. Well, it was worth the wait! The building itself is very cute and the inside was clean and cheerful. Everyone that worked there was friendly and hard working. Now for the best part- the food!! Everything came out fresh and not greasy at all. If you are in the mood for really good Chinese comfort food make a trip out to the lake. After eating, it was really nice to drive by the water! Big parking lot in the back for easy off street parking.
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
Ordered Takeout. Easy to order, food was ready when I arrived, pretty quick service, place looked clean/fine. Food was very bland. Like, NO flavor. Didn't taste like Chinese (or any Asian) food at all. It's in 70124 so I wonder if 1) the cooks are Chinese 2) they are tailoring their food to Anglo tastebuds. Ah well...
google avatar

Rollie R.

Yelp
First time at Ming's and it was ok. The service is very quick! The waitress was very nice but I felt rushed. The egg drop soup was excellent. Then I wanted spicy shrimp and vegetables and she suggested the garlic shrimp. I'll include a picture and the plate wasn't completely full especially for lunch. It was good but not great. The fried rice had tiny pieces of ham? Didn't really go with the shrimp fried rice. I was picking the pieces out with my fork. The prices are really reasonable for lunch. Under $10 for pretty much all the lunch dishes. I might go back and try another dish and ask if they could possibly leave out the ham pieces.
google avatar

Eznaibet F.

Yelp
I order the combination fried rice most likely the onion fried rice. I had more onions then meat in the rice. I thought this place would actually taste like authentic Chinese food but it didn't. The rice didn't taste like nothing at all, if it wasn't for the duck sauce i would of have gave a 1 star rate. I'm very disappointed.
google avatar

Greg N.

Yelp
Check out my picture to see the view I had for the last 1/2 hour of my meal. The restaurant is open until 10 pm but they flipped the chairs at 9:30‼ (Pease note I took the picture at approximately 9:55 pm. After having watched them prepare to close the restaurant for the previous 25 minutes. I was so dismayed & disappointed that I decided to take the picture & post it at the end of our meal. )
google avatar

Yelp
Living here my whole life and I finally gave tongue place a try and I absolutely love it! Great staffs and great food
google avatar

Yelp
DO NOT COME HERE for legit Chinese food. This is a pricier, slightly fancier version of Panda Express. Do not expect the food to be like anything from an immigrant-heavy city like Houston or Boston's Chinatown. It's honestly a tragedy. The honey walnut shrimp is the only decent dish here. Almost all the dishes were overpriced and poor quality. I'm really puzzled why this restaurant has decent reviews because the food was really just overpriced Panda Express. There was not a single Asian family dining there. The restaurant on the outside looks very cute but doesn't look like how a typical Chinese restaurant would look. I appreciate the location near the waterfront- it's a nice date spot. For the actual food, take a hard pass.
google avatar

Monique L.

Yelp
I'm honestly very confused by all the high ratings for this place...we ordered takeout and I was very disappointed in pretty much everything I got. The good: egg rolls are great. Probably should have just eaten those The bad: everything is severely lacking in flavor -- seriously everything is bland. Even the dishes that usually are a bit spicier were lacking. All the chicken was extremely tough and tasted as if it had been reheated. We got an order of the sweet and sour chicken and it's not your typical sweet and sour dish (like the puffy fried nuggets) it's like they fried a chicken breast and chopped it up. Was very disappointed and it was incredibly dry. The general tso was underwhelming and the Singapore mei fun didn't have any curry flavor to it. All the noodle and rice dishes lacked a very basic flavor we're use to with Chinese food. Overall, I'm really upset we spent all this money here when nothing was good. Will not be ordering again.

Yelp
Previous experiences with Ming's have been positive. Ordered take out for three tonight, and the food was tasteless. The dumplings were good, but everything else was devoid of flavor. I was very excited to enjoy the Ming's of the past, but was ultimately disappointed with this evening's experience. The food packaging and temperature, for our short trip home, was more than sufficient. I just wish the flavor had been as good!
google avatar

Patricia R.

Yelp
Ming's is a great neighborhood Chinese joint. I love everything about it, from the food, to the service, to the atmosphere. I had lunch there today and once again, had a wonderful experience. I arrived at peak lunch time, so I sat at the bar and waited for a table. It might have taken all of 2 minutes. Once seated the waitress was super quick in bringing menus and taking our drink order. Drinks were delivered right away and our order was taken. As always our food arrived very timely, and it was hot and delicious. I had the Kung pao chicken with cho-cho and fried rice. Their chi-chos are so perfect! Crispy on the outside with a little pocket of perfectly cooked shrimp and veggies. Yummy! The Kung pao is so flavorful! I don't know what's in that rich, brown sauce, but I know I like it. And did I mention the prices?? Two of us had lunch for $20 and had leftovers to take home! I'll come back here again and again.
google avatar

Eugenie B.

Yelp
This place has the best wait staff in West End! They are very knowledgeable about the food and ingredients. Our server (wish I could remember her name) was patient with our party if 5 who are not use to Chinese food. I'm Very picky about my Asian foods. The other 4 were clueless. Boneless Chicken was a hit with everyone as was the General Tsao Chicken. I had Mandarine Duck which was prepared just shy of perfect. Louisiana Chefs must back away from the salt.... you can always add it table-side but you can't remove it once it's prepared. Hence why half our populace has high blood pressure and stenosis veins.... I'm not just picking on Ming's. This goes for many of the NOLA restaurants I try. Back to the Duck. Very tender with a mild, not overbearing sauce. Shrimp and Lobster sauce, well, it didn't thrill me but, it was easy for the other Grandmother to eat. My fav was the egg rolls! I usually pass on them as they are pretty underwhelming. I would go to Ming's just for egg rolls and a cocktail for lunch or snack before driving home. Yes, they have a full bar and nice reasonably priced cocktails. Catch them for their 2-1 happy hour.... and don't forget to order the egg rolls!

Yelp
So we had been eyeing this spot for a few months and finally decided to give it a try one Thursday evening for an early dinner. I read the reviews and it seemed like everyone suggested going there to eat instead of doing carry out so that's exactly what we did! For appetizers we got the steamed dumplings and the crab rangoons. For the entree we went with the general tso chicken. The steamed dumplings were perfection! The sauce that came with the dumplings was amazing! I am picky with my dumplings so I was very delighted that they were exactly what I wanted. The crab rangoons were also delicious! The amount of the cream cheese in it was perfect. Some places over do it but nope not this spot. The general tso was very flavorful as well, it was big enough to share. Luckily since we were stuffed with the dumplings and rangoons I got to take that for lunch the next day. The service was super fast, they were very attentive and the restaurant started getting a little packed once we were leaving. Overall the prices were very reasonable and we will be back! If you're in the Lakeview area you NEED to come here !

Yelp
Went back to Mings for annual Chinese Christmas Eve dinner. This time the service was much better than what I have had before. I ordered the duck again and though I miss the table side chopping the duck was plentiful, tender and delicious. The appetizer cho cho's were excellent. The pressed duck entree was a little strange but very good. The only bad entree was the honey shrimp, the sauce was too mayonaisey although it had big shrimp and perfect pecans.

Stanton M.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed Ming's last week and were both impressed. The service was friendly and efficient. The Singapore Lo Mein (w/ curry) was exceptional. The Crab Rangoon was one of the best ever. We are ordering take-out tonight from Ming's because I had the Singapore Lo Mein last time and my wife wants it tonight. The Tsingtao beer was cold and a perfect complement to our dinner.

Mindy D.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed I've heard so many good reviews and my husband has been excited to try it. Everything was lacking flavor. The chicken was dry and tasted like it was frozen breaded with a gummy texture lacking any sauce too. Everything was lacking flavor and chicken was dry. They didn't even cook the veggies. They may have been steamed before they tossed them in the box. They also have tiny portions. I don't know how you can mess up pork fried rice.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Be careful of this place I have severe food poisoning from it so do my parents all 3 of us got different dishes and my mom knew right away that it was food poisoning because she has unfortunately had it before really bad the food and health board really needs to look into them we spent over a $115 dollars thinking it would be a nice treat not to have to cook for once in fact we had enough leftovers we were going to have them tonight what a waste of money this place is
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
I thought the food was just okay. We've been searching for a good Chinese place here in the city. Based on the Yelp star rating, I thought this was it. There was some good and some not so good things about this place. First the good: -The prices are good -The service was quick, and the table stayed free of empty plates -Lots of parking out back -Clean dining area Not so good: -We all found the food to be very average Chinese. -There were very little substitutions for the lunch menu. One of us requested more veggies and no rice. No go. -Shrimp is in EVERYTHING. Or at least that's what it felt like. I couldn't eat the fried rice, egg rolls, or won ton soup because of my shrimp allergy. It was a major disappointment for them to not offer shrimp free versions of those staples. Overall, not bad. It just missed the mark for me on a few points.
google avatar

Travis C.

Yelp
We love going to Ming's. We always get the General Tso chicken and Combo Lo Mein. Easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Great atmosphere. Good Drinks. Kid friendly. And no GMO.
google avatar

Celeste S.

Yelp
Ordered to go. Waited 25-30 minutes. Ordered lemon chicken. No sauce. Ordered shrimp fried rice no egg. Got combination rice with egg.... called back to complain, line busy....

Shelby E.

Yelp
Do not eat here. I have eaten a lot of Chinese food and this is by far the worst I have ever had. The fried rice literally just tastes like the grill it was cooked on. No flavor and not your typical fried rice you'd get at other Chinese places. Don't get the fried wontons. The place I usually order calls the cream cheese filled wontons fried wontons, so that's what I thought I was getting. Instead, it was literally just fried strips of wonton without filling and it was like $4+. The service was good actually. Our waiter was very nice and patient considering we walked in at 7:15 and they close at 8:00.

Stephen V.

Yelp
Great meal last week. We had eight in our group and service was outstanding. Spice level was perfect and every dish came out hot.

Dominique B.

Yelp
One the best Chinese restaurants in NOLA, always my choice for comfort food and hands down awesome food every time. Recommend everyone I know to go here for the best Chinese food in town!
google avatar

Mel D.

Yelp
This review is for the waitress not the food. We didn't have a chance to eat. We were asking the blonde waitress (I didn't catch her name) questions about the menu. She was very rude, aggressive, and felt so annoyed that someone dare ask about the menu. You do understand that you are in the customer service business and that people may have allergies, etc.? The place looked very nice and clean inside with plenty of parking. The outdoor seating area looked lovely also.
