We attended in mid-March and almost none of the gardens were open. I would imagine this is due to the time of year. Still nice but I would imagine it will be spectacular in the summer. The palace itself was cool, and the hall was a beautiful place. I would have liked to have tried the Mozart dinner activity here so if that’s your thing, give it a try.

Mirabell Palace and its stunning gardens are a must-visit if you're in Salzburg. The combination of Baroque architecture, beautifully manicured gardens, and the backdrop of the Salzburg Fortress creates a picture-perfect scene straight out of a fairytale. The gardens are incredibly well-maintained, with vibrant flowers, classical statues, and perfectly trimmed hedges. It’s no surprise this location was used in The Sound of Music — walking through it truly feels cinematic. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to visit, when the light is soft and crowds are fewer.

One of the main sites of salzburg and a must see , we also did a concert in the palace which was amazing. The musicianship was fantastic . Highly recommended but do book in advance as it does sell out. Def worth a visit

Mirabell Castle in Salzburg, Austria, is a stunning Baroque palace known for its beautifully manicured gardens and elegant architecture. The Marble Hall, once a royal ballroom, now hosts classical concerts in a breathtaking setting. A must-see for history and art lovers, it offers a peaceful escape in the heart of the city.

Mirabell Palace and its gardens are an absolute gem in Salzburg. The meticulously maintained Baroque gardens, with their vibrant flower beds and mythological statues, offer a serene escape and stunning views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Pegasus Fountain is particularly captivating, and fans of The Sound of Music will recognize it from the iconic “Do-Re-Mi” scene. Inside the palace, the Marble Hall stands out with its elegant architecture and historical significance. It’s no wonder it’s a popular venue for weddings and concerts. Best of all, entry to the gardens is free, making it a must-visit spot for both tourists and locals.

Google
I visited Mirabell Palace during my trip to Salzburg, and while I know it’s famous for being featured in The Sound of Music, I personally wasn’t as excited since I’ve never watched the movie. The palace and its gardens are nice, but I didn’t find them particularly impressive. The gardens are well-kept with sculptures and neat landscaping, but they didn’t stand out as much as some other European gardens I’ve seen. For someone like me, who isn’t familiar with the movie, there wasn’t that same magic or connection that others might feel. The palace itself is charming, but overall, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. If you’re in the area and have some time to spare, it’s worth a visit, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must-see unless you’re a fan of the film.

Beautiful garden! Visited in December, so there was not much of flowers and green. Still very pretty, def need to come back in spring time!

Visiting Mirabell Palace Gardens in winter was a magical experience! The gardens, though quieter during the colder months, still exude a timeless charm. The crisp air and scenic views of Salzburg's surrounding mountains make it feel like stepping into a movie scene—especially with the faint echoes of "The Sound of Music" in the air. Unlike other popular sites in the city, Mirabell Gardens are peaceful, allowing you to truly enjoy the beauty and history. The symmetry of the garden design and the tranquil atmosphere offer a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection. A must-see gem in Salzburg!

Yelp
Prettiest gardens I've seen in Austria. Perfectly manicured and leafy, with flower designs in the grass, and rows of chairs lining the perimeter and all throughout to relax and take it all in. Colorful, so taken care of, birds a-singing. 5 stars!!!

Yelp
We didn't go into the palace, but walked the gardens. We came during the end of November, so there wasn't much to see. The song 'Do-Re-Mi' from "The Sound of Music" was filmed here.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
A definite visit while in Salzburg, especially if you are a fan of the Sound of Music because they filmed much of the "Do Re Mi" song here. Unfortunately most of this is gates off in the winter but it is still beautiful!
google avatar

Yelp
We spent over an hour walking through this lovely garden in late September. The flowers were lovely. It was later in the day when we arrived so there were a few tour groups but they disappeared quickly. We didn't go on the Sound of Music tour, but if you are a fan of the film, you may want to do this.
google avatar

Yelp
Pros: Beautiful flowers and landscaping, wonderful fountains, amazing architecture. To note: Do not step or sit on the grass. The Sound of Music was filmed here. Overall score: A+
google avatar

Yelp
They filmed the iconic "Do-Re-Mi" scene from the Sound of Music in these beautiful gardens. This is a lovely place in the heart of Salzburg to walk around in and take some nice pictures.

Yelp
We didn't tour the inside, so this review is for the garden. But we also saw a Mozart show in the Marble hall and walked through - it's lovely inside and the marble staircase is stunning with little Cupid figures. The gardens are small, but immaculate (what isn't in Salzburg) that are easily walkable in about a half an hour with gorgeous floral displays, fountains, a troll garden (yes!) and statues. Highly recommend you come see this! It's free and open year-round for your enjoyment.

Yelp
I REALLY wanted to visit as many "Sound of Music" locations as humanly possible during our trip. My husband was a good sport about it - having never seen the movie, he had no clue why the places and statues we were roaming the city to find mattered at all...but he's kind of used to that from me. He so often finds himself swept up in my enthusiasm over some book, movie or play that he's just learned to roll with it. At any rate, Mirabell Gardens isn't the ideal spot to visit on a brisk and rainy Christmas morning. The places from Sound of Music - the hedge arch, the fountains - just aren't on glorious display when the weather's bad. It bummed me out, at first. I'm not going to lie. But it also made a ton of sense - and made me understand why all the statues in Christkindlmarkt were enclosed in plastic cages. Salzburg wants to preserve what they can when the weather turns. It just makes recreating random scenes from "Do Re Mi" impossible. Well played, Mirabell. Well played. We still enjoyed the gardens as much as we could at that point, wandering through the paths that were open and accessible to visitors, while I tried to mentally place myself within the movie scenes. We stopped to admire the chiming of the bells, took pictures of the gardens as they looked that day, walked paths that I'm sure led to things that would have made my jaw drop, all before heading out in search of the next Sound of Music landmark. It was a pleasant way to spend the morning, and I wish we could have gone back to explore the Palace a bit, but our timing was off and we had so many things to experience in a short amount of time.
google avatar

GT W.

Yelp
Beautiful palace grounds, but the palace itself is off-limits save for one room. Admission is free. This is a popular attraction since several scenes from "The Sound of Music" were filmed here. Besides a quick walk around the gardens and getting a photo with the pegasus fountain, there's not too much to see. I would spend 15 minutes here tops.
google avatar

Yuko H.

Yelp
The sound of the music!!! This place has lots of filming locations, including the pegasus fountain (where the kids skipped along the edge of the fountain), discus statues, hedge maze tunnel that the kids ran through as they sang, "a longer way to run" and the steps to the rose garden that the kids jumped/ran up and down at the end of the song. Yes! I did skipped along the edge of the fountain, I ran up the steps and made the same pose as they did at the movie. I throughly enjoyed and relived the scenes from the movie. Needless to say, I had to watch that movie when I got home! Garden is very beautiful, so picture perfect. Even without a knowledge of the movie, this place is a must visit while in Salzburg.

Yelp
Have you seen the Sound of Music? Come on, it is okay. You can admit it that you are a secret Sound of Music fanatic. A group of us were in Salzburg for two days as part of our trip through Austria and Germany. We did a Sound of Music tour with Fraulein Maria's bicycle tours (http://www.mariasbicycletours.com/). Only one person in our group was really into the movie, but we thought it would be something fun to do. The tour was amazing and I would highly recommend it. The starting point for the tour is at the Gardens. They are beautiful, well manicured garden. If you are a fan of the movie you will be very excited. While there we constantly saw people acting out portions of the film. While there also check out the collection of stone gnomes scattered throughout the forested section of the garden. They were modeled after real life townsfolk. If you are in town spend a couple minutes and go through the garden. If you have more time, sign up for one of the bicycle tours.

Yelp
I enjoyed touring the Schloss Mirabell and spending time in the Mirabellgarten. It was fun to see where the Sound of Music filmed the show tune ..Do Re Mi. The garden was not as well maintained as some of the previous photos but it was still wonderfully relaxing. They have lots of benches, pathways and arbors throughout the garden. The statutes were my favorite and I made a point to stop by each one. The Pegasus Fountain was placed in the garden in 1913 and the Grand Fountain represents fire, air, earth and water. You can also relax in beautiful Rose Garden just south of the Mirabell Schloss. The Mirabell house was built in 1606 and appears to be restored to perfection. Much of the house was not open to the public but I appreciated what was available. The Schloss Mirabell is lovely and very clean.

Yelp
4.7 stars! This is such an exquisite garden! Everything is impeccably well maintained. The flowers and greenery were all vibrant with life and color. The fountains and statues also add to the beauty of the landscape. There are tons and tons of tourists, myself included, pouring in, which detracts slightly from the experience, but who can blame the crowds? I do not know of anyone who does not adore The Sound of Music, so naturally, everyone is flocking to Mirabell Gardens to reenact the scenes from the beloved film. So yes, I do recommend stopping by the gardens at the very least to admire and visit the scenes and sights of "Do, Re, Mi."
google avatar

Yelp
One of my highlights of visiting Salzburg was to capture the magic of The Sound if Music. Thus Mirabelle Gardens was a must see. This spectacular vista is beautiful on a dreary day, I can only imagine what it's like to visit in summertime. The gardens greenery look sculpted with marble statues dotting the park. Pegasus arises from the fountain and I did get a bit carried away.. Especially on the steps where Julie sang Do Re Mi. I can picture the girls in their dirndls and boys in their jumpers, all made from curtains. I could actually hear Captain Von Trapp saying " Fraulein are those actually my children hanging from the trees?" There is a City Hall also in the midst. This is also the way to get to the Old Town. Definitely worth the visit.

Yelp
Drizzly, rainy day in Salzburg but a gorgeous setting. Super close to the river, the Mozart house, the Palace, and nestled along the amazing views of Austria. This place is beautiful. We were not even there in full bloom, and we were dodging some pretty heavy rains...but...the hills were definitely alive with the sound of music...okay enough of that. The grounds are colorful, historic, and well worth the trip while motoring through Austria. We found easy parking a few blocks away. Got some amazing pictures by the river with the castle in the distance and all along the palatial architecture. Do not miss out on this when visiting Salzburg!
google avatar

Yelp
The gardens here really are beautiful, with a wide array of vibrant flowers, tree lined paths, and stunning water features. It is definitely worth your Time to at least stroll through and take in all the beauty that nature has to offer. I went at around 9amish and there were a few people walking around but it was not crowded at all. I highly recommend coming around this time if you are looking for a less crowed experience.

Yelp
We love gardens in the cities and this was no exception. It is small but very well maintained, beautiful colors of each flower! Amamos los jardines en las ciudades y este no fue la excepción. Es chiquito pero muy bien mantenido, hermosos colores de las distintas flores!

Yelp
Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich. The garden's geometric form is typical for the Baroque period. I love the movie Sound is Music. My Mom and I used to watch it every holiday and it was tradition for us. So when I found out that it was the place where they filed some of the musical sequences for the movie I was super excited! What I didn't realize that after we checked into our hotel was that Mirabell Palace was directly behind it! We had explored the day before and didn't know why there were so many people walking around the lovely garden. The next day our tour guide told us that this was the place they filmed "Do Re Mi" on those famous steps and Pegasus fountain. We also saw the angel staircase (IG worthy) which leads up to the marble hall. Our tour guide told us that Austrians don't really understand the Americans' fascination with The Sound of Music which I though was really interesting. This palace definitely checked off one of the highlights of our trip. It was nice reminiscing about my childhood and how much this movie meant to me.

Yelp
Marvelous, colorful gardens to roam and a beautiful marble palace interior. It's open from 9am to dusk with plenty of spaces to take photos and even lay in the grass. The palace is beautiful and the marble statues in the staircase are lovely. The real treat, though, is the garden. The Sound of Music filmed the song "Do Re Mi" at the circular fountain, so get your cameras out Keep an eye out for concerts in the secluded theater. You'll likely hear them in the evening, so pop in for a free show! I saw the D'Salzburger Tanzer group sing and dance on the first day of the summer arts festival. There appear to be other regularly scheduled shows on Fridays and Saturdays, so stay tuned!

Yelp
Yelp review #550 The history was that Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich built this beautiful palace in 1606 to impress his beloved mistress, Salome Alt. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, of Schloss Belvedere fame, remodelled the palace in baroque style in 1721. We were there on April 30th and this place was close to the B&B we were staying. The weather was warm with flowers in full bloom! The gardens are filled with marble statues. So many colorful tulips and flower I haven't seen before. I really love the place! Stunning, beautiful big garden. Lots of different areas and benches to sit around and relax. If you come early, you will find less tourist. This attraction is free. The palace's interior are open during select hours. The garden are open year-round from 6 a.m. to dusk. There was an icecream/gelato stand and there were tasty. Truly a place not to be missed.
google avatar

Stacey P.

Yelp
Beautiful gardens, perfect for an afternoon stroll or to sit on one of the many benches to enjoy the weather and greenery.
google avatar

Ingrid G.

Yelp
Grab a coffee and stroll these beautiful gardens. We were lucky enough to be there when a beautiful orchestra was playing music on a sunny day. The palace built by Prince archbishop wolf in 1606 to impress his beloved mistress. Unfortunately There is not much to see inside because there are businesses inside but you can visit the lavish stair case made of pure marble and on certain days at certain times you can also visit the marble hall . Check the website or the tourist office for when this is. The gardens also have a beautiful self-serve café where we stop to relax for a grapefruit beer. They also have ice cream etc.

Yelp
Pleasant and beautiful, even in the rain My wife and I were in Salzburg recently with a tour group. On our first visit to Mirabell Gardens, it was raining so we did not see it at its best. Even in the rain we could see the beauty of the Gardens. Thankfully, we did go back the next day to better appreciate all they had to offer. On our second visit, yes, the weather was better, but the crowd had tripled in size. A bit more people, but the sun and scattered clouds made for some wonderful pictures. In fact, one of the women in our group did her version of the "Doe-Ray-Me" song on the steps; (no, I will not be posting the video - she'd kill me). The flowers were in good color and the memory of scenes from the movie, "The Sound of Music", were still dancing in my mind when we left. (It was special to see some of the sites used in "The Sound of Music" oh so many years ago.) As a side note, later in our trip, our Tour Director Lucy pointed out where, although a mile or so away, we did get to see the actual house used for the front of the house in the movie, including the lane where Julie Andrews returns singing "I Have Confidence in Me". If you are visiting Salzburg and love the movie, you need to be sure to add this stop to your visit.

Heliana M.

Yelp
We didn't have too many days in Salzburg when we visited in August 2010 hence we quickly saw Mirabell gardens on our last day before catching the train to Prague :) So grateful we stopped to see this beautiful place filled with flowers.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
From the outside, this is a beautiful palace. Unfortunately, most of the interior had been converted to commercial space and is inaccessible. From what we were told, the main staircase and small ballroom are all that survived a fire 20 years ago. They are both beautiful and ornate in their detail. The gardens on the other hand are extensive, lush and very tranquil. So much so, we had to find a bench to sit for a while and enjoy the view. Of the palaces visited, this had the least to see structurally but worth the trip through the gardens.
google avatar

Ren Y.

Yelp
The Mirabell Gardens is famous for being a filming spot in The Sound of Music film. The garden isn't a stop if you do the tour via Panorama Tours, but it is just across the street from the pick-up/drop-off spot anyway. Come here to see the fountains, the statues, the gnomes (be sure to give him a little pat on the head!), and more!
google avatar

Jocelyn W.

Yelp
Gorgeous grounds! We loved visiting this place and we would recommend if you are in the area. Sorry I don't have a lot of details because we saw so many places it's kinda running together but we enjoyed.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
We were there 1997 during the winter time, not many people were there. While we lived in Germany, we should have visited Salzburg more often. When we went back in Summer 2013, oh my, too many people. I just love this place not because of Sound of Music, but Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had Altenau Palace built in 1606 as a token of HIS LOVE for Salome Alt. How romantic is that? http://www.zazzle.com/mirabell/gifts

Yelp
Nearing the Salzach River, is the beautiful Baroque Schloss (castle) Mirabell (1606) and its adjoining meticulous Mirabellgarten. Not as extensive or as grandiose as, say, the Gardens of Versailles in Paris, but nonetheless breathtaking. Spring time in these gardens are my favorite time of year to visit. Spent many moments here pondering the day, reading a book amidst beauty and the buzz of a fantastically ornate storybook city. In Mirabellgarten's geometrically-arranged gardens are mythology-themed statues dating from 1730 and four groups of sculpture (Eneas, Hercules, Paris and Pluton) by the Italian sculptor Ottavio Mosto, from 1690. It is noted for its boxwood layouts. Mirabellgarten's most notable appearance is in The Sound of Music where Maria and the children sing 'Do-Re-Mi' while dancing around the horse fountain and using the steps as a musical scale. C'mon, you know you wanna: * Do "a deer, a female deer." * Re "a drop of golden sun." * Mi "a name I call myself." * Fa "a long long way to run". * So "a needle pulling thread." * La "a note to follow so" * Ti "a drink with jam and bread / That will bring us back to 'Do'." Jetzt können Sie das meiste alles singen! (Now you can sing most anything! ) #Yelp 365: 114/365

Yelp
Schloss Mirabell & Mirabellgarten is centrally located in Salzburg and is worth a visit. It is a large palace. There is not much to see inside because most of it is closed off for use as an event venue and some of it has tourist related businesses residing there as well. The main stairway is loaded with ornate marble carved statues and a grand marble staircase going up 3 floors or so. Most of the larger than life sized carvings are of cherubs and romans in full military regalia. We did get to see the original grand ball room which was absolutely beautiful. We ran into an usher who told us most of the palace had burned many years ago except for the stair case that we traversed and the grand ballroom we were standing in front of. It is an impressive palace with a good sized regal garden accessible to all. There is even a small park to sit while reflecting on your Salzburg travels. Bus service does stop right out front. The most impressive aspect of Schloss Mirabell was the main rear entry floor which had a gigantic aerial photo of the entire city of Salzburg. Pretty darn cool!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
This was well worth the time at the end of our day in Salzburg. The garden was beautiful. The shaded spots were a nice respite from the sun. The "do, re, me" steps were fun for my wife who loves Sound of Music. It's hard to miss and difficult to understand why someone would want to.

Yelp
What am I missing here? I know during the summer it is probably prettier but there doesn't seem to be a lot to it. Location: I was able to get here by public transit but it was very walkable. Gardens: It is big but not as big as other gardens I've seen around the world. Like I said, winter isn't probably to see it like I did. But there are some picture-worthy statues. I just don't get it.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
I am sure this place is beautiful in the summer but we were there in the winter and there is very little to see or do. I am sure its exciting for some bit for me it was just a walk in the park not dissimilar to many others around the place.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
What a stunning place! Pause on the famed "Sound of Music" steps (Where the curtain clad VonTrapp children sang "Do-Re-Me") and take in the simultaneous view of Old Town, the river and the mountains. Personally, I think it's one of the most stunning frames for viewing the city. The gardens themselves are like a mini Versailles. Nowhere near as large or intricate, but beautiful nonetheless with roses galore, shaded, tree-lined walkways, and many picturesque fountains. That, and there is so much symmetry in the design of the garden that I want to sing a joyous song. Not sure what it is, but symmetry in design makes my heart flutter. And, let's be honest for a moment. Who doesn't like unicorns? No one, that's who. And, there is more than 1 unicorn to be spotted. I won't spoil it for you by telling you where. On top of the views, the gardens and the unicorns, the icing on the top of the cake is that this enchanted place is completely free.
google avatar

Janet H.

Yelp
One of the most amazing gardens I have ever visited. Its size is very manageable and it is not very repetitive.
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
We visited in Fall - roses still in bloom! Water fountains, statues, gardens, trellis', it's a great spot for a bite to eat, reflection, or an afternoon outing. We arrived around 1600 ands the ticket offices were closed, but we explored the grounds. Right next to the Mozart Institut, the location is surrounded by shops and restaurants. Lots going on!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Granted that visiting in the winter is probably not the best time to see the gardens in all their glory however you can get an idea of the potential of the gardens and a lot of this review is based upon that and how I can imagine these gardens in the summer time. The gardens have a spectacular backdrop I the castle and are filled with fountains and statutes. Many people also come to see where the sound of music do-re-me song was filmed, on the steps. The gardens are free to the public and only a short walk down from the old city (about 10 minutes or so). On the other side of the wall towards the river is also a decent playground for the kids to run around. I also recommend this large hill on the side opposite to the old city. It raises above the gardens and you can get good pictures of the castle from there as well.
google avatar

Anthony G.

Yelp
Certainly you'll recall the scenery of this absolutely beautiful, well kept garden. Why? It's featured in "The Sound of Music". You know the scene, you know the song. My fiancée started singing it and I almost gagged. Anyway, this is a true gem in this beautiful city and a must. Not just for fans of that above mentioned movie that I never seen in it's entirety because it's too long, but to appreciate the beauty of it.

Stanley S.

Yelp
Slightly don the road from the home of the original Sacher Torte are these beautiful gardens with big history. Thanks to our guide, we learned a lot more about The Mirabell Palace and Gardens other than what we already knew form the Sound of Music. The grounds are well kept and in the Spring are bursting with color. Once there you will easily recognize the scenes shot for The Sound of Music (from what I understand, Austrians know little of this movie/musical other than the tours offered locally). If you look beyond the movie, you can appreciate the beauty of the Gardens and the history. The Palace unfortunately has sold off or rented out much of its space and belies its original grandeur. Nonetheless, the gardens make for some great photo ops and are a not-miss location for any visit to the beautiful city of Salzburg
google avatar

Majlinda K.

Yelp
Really pretty gardens to walk through and you can amazing views of the palace! The gardens are well maintained and you can find benches to sit and enjoy the view. Nice free attraction in the city so take advantage of it!

Yelp
I spent a lot of time in Mirabell Gardens during my time in Salzburg. I just absolutely fell in love with the place. Not only did it have Sound of Music written all over it, the sense of calm and peace that came with the gardens was lovely - especially as the first time i went through it was pouring with rain so there weren't many others out. I went back the following day in the sunshine and the place was packed. Obviously the SoM filming locations are a major draw. We also had a picnic in a different section of the park which was lovely

Yelp
Mirabell Palace/Garden is a beautiful place in Salzburg. If you are a die hard Sound of Music fan, you can run through the garden and sing Do Re Me all you want!

Yelp
This is where the kids run round in the Sound of Music. Didn't look at its best in March when we were there, but you could see how nice it must be when the flowers are out, and there is a nice view across the river. You're a short walk to the Mozart Wohn Haus so why not have a picnic here? Unless it's illegal.

Yelp
In the center of Salzburg you will find Mirabellgarten.A lovely garden to visit and famous for being used in the film the Sound of music.See the horse statues and water feature as seen in the film.A great place to have a rest from the hustle and bustle of the city, and admire the flower's and scenery.
