How Creole Cuisine Became the Unassuming Cornerstone of LA’s Food Landscape | Eater LA

"In Compton, Miracle Market is noted as one of the remaining markets still selling Creole staples like seven steaks, Blue Plate mayonnaise, and Camellia red beans—helping preserve the ingredients central to the cuisine." - Anneliese Wilson

Google
One of the best meat markets near Long beach. It's technically in Compton but if your in Long beach, Carson or those areas get over here asap. Reasonable prices and great quality of meat. They even have meat packs, that include a variety of meats, seafood, etc. Staff is amazing. Ever since my MIL showed me this place I won't go anywhere else.

Google
Very Satisfied with the service and product of their Meat 🥩 I love 😍 the idea of being able to buy an Meat Package. These grocery stores prices are way too high. Best place to save on Meat and get Good quality.

Cmapps B.

Google
I'm at home. I felt so welcomed. An abundance LOCAL made products, isles of an ample selection of all soul food fixings, gigantic chicken hot link made from scratch on the premises by their onsite butcher. Fresh cuts of meat on display for any international chef. The market is definitely a main stay in this community. Just amazing staff as well. I definitely felt the love from the motherland. The AMBIANCE WAS SURREAL.

The older black man in the back is mean and rude. He lacks customer service skills. The place is dirty, and need to be cleaned ASAP. Im not sure what happened to the employees that care.

Google
The last time I shopped at this market was in 1974. It's awesome to see that they are still here. And there over the counter meat. Is fresh and the prices are Great. My sister have a hard time finding Beef ribs so since we were in the area we drove by and was happy to see them still here. I bought 2 slabs of beef ribs. I didn't notice how much they were by the pound I was just happy that they had some they cost was less than 40.00 for 2 slabs. They had some thick steaks that I saw at the butcher market for $32.00 a pound. At Miracle Market the cost was $8.00 dollars a pound. A huge difference. It's a must try you won't be sorry.

Yelp
A little pricey and whoever the guy is behind the counter when I go is usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday before 2:00 PM he is so freaking rude and he does not need to be waiting on customers. I specifically asked for 3 pounds of the oxtails and he gave me more then when I get up to the counter, they weigh the oxtails and it's like almost $50 and I'm like no I only ask For 2 1/2 to 3 pounds so I don't know what he did but I didn't wanna go back there and confront him or have an issue so I just paid the money and I left but it's hard to find fresh oxtails that are not real fatty and they have some of the best ones Yeah the smell when you walk through the door is very irritating and their products like on their shelves, like the box products and stuff like that are a little more expensive than should be but overall this is the closest store that I can get to in my area from my area to get fresh oxtails that are not real fatty so you have to pick your battles

Yelp
My family had gone to Miracle Market for years. I hadn't been in a few years, went Friday. No number system at the meat counter, just yelling 'next'! Rude customer service!!! I didn't recognize anyone behind the counter. I ordered turkey wings and asked the lady to cut them for me. She chopped them in the middle of the wing!!! I will NEVER step foot in that store again!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The guy behind the meat counter with all the earrings and lip ring.. I have been going to miracle market since I was a child.. the one thing that hasn't changed it when you walked through the door that smell hit you in the face, but I bothered by that because they still have had the best service and some of the best meats, even though they are a little expensive. I went there a few months ago, and the guy behind the counter was so rude to me that I thought maybe he was having a bad day. He acted as if I owed him something. He didn't determine me because I don't live close enough to come out there. I'm usually about 25 miles away from miracle market at this point in my life. But as I was, I drove down to Compton today to go to the market to pick up some of my favorite things. The whole kit, cheese, the spicy sausage and turkey neck. This felt like war. Every time I asked this man or something he was upset like I am bothering him at his home. He spoke to me in a degrading fashion, like I was stupid. Like he had the answer to the quiz and I studied for them all week long and I should know that every turkey wing is 1 pound. That every loop of the sausage was 1 pound. Just plain ole rude. As my grandchild looked back at me because she wanted to understand what was happening. I had the advisor that people behaved like this sometimes. But I don't have to spend my money where I'm not treated with respect. I gave him every courtesy that I could I said, please and thank you. I ask how his day was. None of that seemed to soften the blows that he threw it me every time I open my mouth. This is my last trip to America market. I work too hard to spend my money where I'm not respected.

House P.

Yelp
I went there on Thursday, September 18, and I asked for 12 of the marinated chicken wings for $4.99 lb. When I went to put them on the grill I realized I only had 10 and he charged me $5.99 lb. I went back up there and told the young man his two mistakes, and he said, "my bad." Not I am sorry and how can I fix it, BUT MY BAD. I then go to the register and the ladies up there say tell me they cannot help me with the pricing issue. They tell me only the manager can help and he was gone for the day. I will not step foot in there again. Prices are too high and you throw in bad service too, equals no for me.

Minnie JC D.

Yelp
I was told that they carry Boudin.. so I get there 10 o'clock in the morning. First bad sign is that the market smells really bad. . I Looked for the Boudin myself.. don't see it.. I approach an African-American gentleman and I use that term very loosely. Behind the meat counter.. and I asked him could you tell me where the Boudin is . He rudely says " I can't hear you" .. now. Granted the music is loud and he's about 5 feet away from me, but I mean you see I have a question. Why don't you walk a little closer so you can hear me I can't come behind the counter. So then I ask him again and he says very rudely and tries to correct the way I said Boudin .. "we don't have none." It was my first time there and my last time there .. I don't need anybody being rude to me at 10 o'clock in the morning when I'm trying to spend my hard earned money I'm glad they didn't have it.

Yelp
They have a wide variety of beans and peas. They also have so many spices you won't find in your supermarket. This market is your spot for southern favorites.
google avatar

Bev J.

Yelp
I went to this meat market because it has a very wide reputation of having everything that you need soul food wise. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the establishment and the variety of things that were available however, I found them to be expensive, not moderately priced at all, but actually expensive in comparison to other stores. This took me back because it's located in a low income area. Example: oxtails at Superior was 7.99 but 9.99 at this market...I will continue to shop here for those items that are not easily obtained elsewhere.
google avatar

Lunatic L.

Yelp
This place is good and bad. The people in the meat market are so friendly. The cashiers are really messed up. And unfriendly A cashier name Veronica was very rude to me to say the least and tried to get sarcastic because she did not want to do her job. If you come to Miracle Market avoid Veronica she's problematic and unprofessional
google avatar

Melanie P.

Yelp
There Chicken links are the best !! And they have a lot of different meat packages for cheap also takes EBT!!

Rochelle S.

Yelp
I was thinking the reviews I read were a bit harsh on the character of the workers in the meat dept from what I remember years ago. Not.... Their attitude stinks as the store does. I went a week n half ago the guys was acting as if he was mad he was at work. Went this time today as a matter of fact, no customer service from another butcher, my goodness why come to work? Also represent in that manner as tho you mad you're there n if so it's not the fail of the customers. They don't seem to care one way or another cause like it or not people still gone go in n shop... hmmm what are we doing people? Just cause they look like us doesn't sign the permission slip for lack of courtesy's required for community service. It's not all that for what you go through n smells so bad too uhhuh

Yelp
I haven't seen Spencer steaks in so damn long, I used to keep my freezer loaded with them! Honey the Spencer steaks were juicy like soaked in butter overnight, and I didn't put any butter on them, which I normally do ! The service was more than A1! There were a lot of people around using broken English with pints of all brands, Nobody was begging though so I felt very comfortable in the store and will return really soon. The store was a vibe!

Alter E.

Yelp
This market is still serving the community after many years. The near counter was staffed with people who were both helpful and knowledgeable. They do offer chicken sausage which is hard to find in the area.

Amber J.

Yelp
The customer service isn't that great neither is the cleanliness of the store I've been coming her for at least 11 years but today was my last time coming not only does the meat not look fresh the store has a smell but that's not the worst part as I'm waiting for my lunchmeat I see a roach crawling on the meat counter I told the butcher he killed it but there was also several flies in the meat case one was just sitting unbothered on a container that had links it it that was only partially covered that is just disgusting
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
The store was very, very clean ,out side and in... I'm going back soon for a MEAT package!!! Customer service was great and very friendly!!!
google avatar

Shelly S.

Yelp
Don't go to this market if you don't want to get food diseases or worms from so many flies inside the meat counter. Yes, it still stinks to high heaven and the prices are much higher than grocery stores. Not to mention the meat quality should be A1 with these prices. Guys, please demand more from folks selling in our community and not giving a damn about our health. They blatantly charging more money and the nerve to store our food in a stinkin flea infested dirtybplace that look like it hadn't been cleaned or organized since 1980. Please this is a disgrace. All the ham hocks, gizzard, pork necks and hard to find soul is not worth dyeing over. There are plenty of meat markets in Gardena with better quality food and a clean place to store food. And, watch your receipt to ensure you're getting an itemized receipt and not the one with the total amount and nothing else. Despicable.
google avatar

Loddy D.

Yelp
Ok so all the review about the stench customer service and flies are all true. I was here for some meats against my will but anyway I smelled this place through the mask before I even hit the door. Customer service sucks the black guy with the gold teeth (yea he had no mask on) was rude. And calling women mama won't smooth things over I'm not your mom! I was told it would take 10 minutes to thaw the meat I ended up being here for an hour until he just gave me a box of what I wanted which was $80. No apologies for the long wait or skipping over numbers just trash. Parking lot sucks too.

Yelp
This market has been open for many, many years. It's not been updated and isn't all fancy like other markers but if you are looking for any kind of meat, they have it. I come here for the sausages that are made in Louisiana. As a young girl I use to travel to Louisiana every summer with my grandparents to visit our family in Evergreen and we would have sausage for breakfast and Boudain for dinner but only a very little piece because it was expensive. When we couldn't make the trip, my grandfather would make sure to bring us some back. Well he passed years ago but I was so happy to find out that they sell it here and every since I've been coming here to purchase it. They also have seasoning and candy from there as well. The ladies who work at the counter are really friendly as well as the people working the counter. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
Back in the day when I was young. Remember the days when your parents took you shopping at a Market away from where you lived this is a memory I cherish listen up I'm going to take you way back.. This Market is in the heart of the hood and I don't care this is where I choose to shop. This market is the last of the mom and pops that dominated in the 70's. Get over here and check them out if you too are hankering for a bit of the way things used to be. Take a number and step aside. I appreciate specialty cuts of meat because of my Mother she's from Arkansas and country to the bone as a child her dinner lived in a pen or ran around the yard they ate everything from the roota to the toota. She had her family overnight her squirrel and possum after she came to California. I came one day from school and saw a squirrel cooking and I just about lost my mind. I don't want to meet my meat. I don't apologize for appreciating such things as fresh cut to order deli meats a block of bologney and pickle loaf with white bread and the chittlins and neck bones my mother prepared with love the oxtails she had cut to order the hot links and ribs we barbecued in the back yard. They would jam to that music and we would crack up listening to Bobby Blue Bland sing " if you're going to walk on my love please take off your shoes" zzz hill and Johnny Taylor blaring late into night while they played bid whist. Those days are long gone but I remember the love and fun we had cooking and eating together. On this day my sister and I went shopping she had to get a few bags of chittlins for Christmas and although I don't eat them she loves them. They have retro candy too I love those now laters and zag nut bars. Oh and a bottle of Boones farm pink lemonade or strawberry hill remember that or pink champale. I had bacon cut from a slab with the rind on and a fat sour pickle as a kid we stuck a peppermint stick inside of it. I glance at the pig feet passing it right on by ordering up some hog head cheese a thick piece of spicy and a thick piece of regular with a box of saltine crackers omg that's good eating. Before you say yuck picture being poor and having to make do with the lesser cuts of meat my Mother took those parts and made something yucky taste delicious and I'm proud of her. What was odd was we could afford to eat anything we wanted my family was middle class however my Father hated almost every thing roota or toota especial chittlins and anything pig I guess you could say he brought home the bacon and my mother cooked it. We can't eat those things much now for obvious reasons. My daughter would never eat things like pickle loaf, potted meat, neck bones or liver she even hates mayonnaise she would starve first. She grew up in a condo and never ran to an ice cream truck at home I remember our truck grandpa goodie was his name his music theme was Tyrone Davis "turning point" when we heard that song we took off running yelling ice cream truck. He had the best chili fries and chili fritos he was a trip years later I heard he sold funny cigarettes too. That's why the big kids loved him lol. My food choices are better but once a year or so I need some old school food from my past. Pickled pig feet anyone. Lol

Charles W.

Yelp
Gouging community to no end, pricing doesn't make sense at all. Everything in the store is above 59% margin. Bought a 14 oz can of oil sausages at five dollars a can, which has to be 75 to 89 percent profit. Trash ass store and whomever the owner is he should be jailed for overcharging Patrons.
google avatar

Kristofer G.

Yelp
This is probably the BEST meat market in so cal! Yes I said it! Lol but anyways, this place has all the meats you can imagine and their own signature marinades and seasonings will blow your mind. I picked up some dogs, chicken wings and a nice beef steak and tried practicing on my grilling. The meat looked, smelled, and tasted fresh. The location is a bit sketch but other than that! I've found my meat market! Oh and never skip out on the pastrami! I thinks it's their specialty.
google avatar

Naye D.

Yelp
This place is exactly what u might expect from a meat market. It gets crowded. I come here specifically for Turkey chops and I have noticed that they give u a few offs and ends of useless pieces. A tip I always use those useless pieces. Boil them and use that broth for gravy or dressing, I know u dont need it but use it anyways. I would give 5 starts if every Turkey chop in the prepackaged frozen ones was a whole Turkey chop. I'm paying by the weight, those ends & bones cost me money.
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! What happened to this establishment? The meat case was filled with flies. From one end to the other nothing but flies. I really hate to see landmark Businesses like this in the community falter. Hopefully, management will address this issue.
google avatar

Leo H.

Yelp
was at a bbq eat and I had the best tasting sausage it was smoked and flavorful so I asked where did they get the links from he told me at the market in Compton so I looked it up and booked marked it and as soon as we left I headed over there to get some the best tasting smoked links you will have
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
I live in Compton all my life decided to go to miracle market for my mom to buy a hog head liverwurst for the first tome. I was surprised they had half of what I needed. Looks like liverwurst is harder to find.
google avatar

Elisabeth P.

Yelp
On 10/23 I lost my wallet. Could not exactly remember where I used it last. I thought CVS. I left the country worried but hoping it was at work . Looked for it when I returned on 10 /31. I spend days looking. I checked my accounts, credit cards. No suspicious activities. I finally cancelled my Credit cards and obtained new ones. On Nov 3rd I drove past Miracle Market and I kind of remembered going there before I left the country. On 11/4 I dexided to stop and ask. Low and behold the same lady that helped me that day said that she had my wallet. And handed it to me. Nothing was missing . I was so grateful for the staff being so honest and keeping my wallet safe. Kudos to Miracle market. I wish I remembered her name but will stop by and drop off something nice to her.
google avatar

Malinda G.

Yelp
I looovveee this store, since I was a little girl me and my family shopped here. The best meats in the world!!

Whilimina M.

Yelp

Yelp
Wonderful service in the meat market! I was on a mission to get carne asada and the man who helped me was very attentive, very accommodating, and very patient (i didn't really know how much I needed.) Thank you!
google avatar

Andre M.

Yelp
They carried Southern-style meats suck as slab bacon that with the rind on the bacon Smoked Jawle, hog head cheese, oxtail, and seasoning
google avatar

Tiferet I.

Yelp
Absolutely love this business! I stay in long beach and I will drive to compton and purchase my meat. They are very selective never smells like rotten meat always fresh and Lord willing I will be getting my meat package with a side of breakfast chicken sausage

L T.

Yelp
The store smells like rotten meat , the prices are 3x a chain store and it is dirty and dusty including the shelf products. The floors I believe are tan or use to be white at one time.
google avatar

Jolai J.

Yelp
Went for the pastrami. Price has doubled since the new owners have taken over. The pastrami was cut horribly. No consistency in the threading. A lot of threads, then chunks... Paid way too much to receive that type of quality.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Great store, has a ton of different and unique meat options.
google avatar

Kecia F.

Yelp

Joevanny A.

Yelp
This market is cool I love the meats and the manager joe is nice with other women. GREAT SERVICE!! Come here binches

Diane B.

Yelp
Checked Yelp and went here to check out their meats; the smell was sickening and then I went to the meat counter; flies, flies and meat; folks standing around to order like they dont see the flies and am I the only one who can smell that stench. I waited, observed and left. Who buys meat from such a smelly place and ALL THOSE DAMN FLIES? When to Hilltop Market on 104th and Western and got what I needed; no smell and no flies!
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
This review is for the meat market only. Man, only in the hood can you find a hook up like the meat market inside Miracle Market. They carry everything you can imagine from oxtails to hogs head cheese. Everything is fresh and the service is great. Arrive early because there will be a line so take a number and wait patiently. Their meat packs are the best deals. They got me hook, line & sinker. I will never go anywhere to another meat market again...This is the place for me...
google avatar

Stacy G.

Yelp
The character of the market is changing since the store has changed hands. For the first time in my lifetime has my family ever got bad meat. The ground beef was bad when we cook it two days after we bought it. We were already disappointed at the sudden price increase in the ethnic items that where traditionally offered at what we thought were reasonable. We drive from the Inland Empire to patronize Miracle Market...no need to do that any more. It's a sad day in Mudville when a tradition passes.
google avatar

Bacon J.

Yelp
WHAT THE HECK IS THAT .SMELL...? When you first walk in is what you think! I here people talk about there good meat packs, but like the say YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET! They have all the liquors you can think of and ONLY if i need something pre-packaged already is the ONLY way im buying from them cause i e NEVER...smelled a supposed to be FRESH meat market with a STINKY smell like that!
google avatar

Sunshyne J.

Yelp
WHAT'S THAT SMELL? True this store has EVER LIQOUR BRAND,but that store smells terrible. No complaints about the customer service I just can NOT....,get pass that terrible smell ijs.
google avatar

Crystal P.

Yelp
Back in the day this store used to be the best place to get your meat. Now it's disgusting. There are flies everywhere. My mother in law was told by an employee (that was fired the next week) that the meat was not properly handled or cleaned. Will never go back there.

Cynthia T.

Yelp
Lousy butcher service. The younger Hispanic guy ignored me for at least 10 minutes and when I asked if he could assist me he claimed to be helping an invisible couple. I put down my basket and walked out. Bad service gets non on my hard earned money.
google avatar

Marcia K.

Yelp
I come here especially for their ribs, chicken quarters & hot links. This store been here along time. My mom & dad still come here too. It's a family affair. Lol
google avatar

Jamal J.

Yelp
Awesome meat package deals starting at $36, whole chickens for like 4-5 bucks, thick bacon slabs, wide variety of meats at discounted prices. Big parking lot, plenty of employees that'll work with you, my family's been shopping here for generations. check it out for yourself.

Keela W.

Yelp
Has the best Chicken Links in California!! Been here for years!! In the hood but well worth the triip

Ms. W.

Yelp
This market is definitely in the "hood", but if that doesn't scare you off...it is worth the visit. It is very well organized by grabbing a number, and the people are all friendly and nice. They have EVERYTHING in the meat department, as well as hard to find seasoning's for ethnic (african american) foods. I live in a boogee neighborhood of Signal Hill, and I literally drive out of my way to go to this market to get my chicken links and turkey chops!

Marsha V.

Yelp
I come all the way from Los Angeles for the Boudin sausages and rabbit.... Market smells really bad!!!!!
