Mirador de Ulía

"A special restaurant, particularly given its outstanding views of the city and Zurriola beach that will definitely grab your attention. Located at the top of Monte Ulía, it is run by chef Rubén Trincado, the third generation of the family, who has his own style yet with a culinary legacy rooted in tradition. His creatively inspired cuisine plays with native Guipúzcoa ingredients such as hake, but also focus on dishes from the world’s “blue zones” where people live longest. He offers four tasting menus (one of which is vegetarian) that share the same base but which vary in their number of courses." - Michelin Inspector

The view alone is enough to qualify this place as 5 stars. At dusk it's magical and then the sunset! The staff are equally amazing, friendly and knowledgeable. Tasting menu was perfection. Everything on the menu looked and tasted phenomenal. The flavours and combinations were so unique. Chef is a genius.

Amazing view of San Sebastián. The meal didn’t quite match, but overall experience still makes it worth a visit if you’re looking for something memorable when dining about Basque country.

Enjoyed the fantastic tasting menu. Sommelier recommended excellent wine to pair. City view is incredible.

I was shocked to attend this place and it not be busy. If you are only in San Sebastián for a few days this is the Michelin star restaurant to go to. The view is amazing, it's convenient from the old town via taxi its not long, the wine list is well priced and amazing, and the food is an experience. For 140 euros you are going to battle to come close to the value you get here in this region.

This place is on the Michelin recommend guide but I don’t know why. As a regular at Michelin restaurants around the world, we know what to expect but glad this place doesn’t make the grade ( in our opinion ). On a positive note, the place is stunning, with views to die for. The staff were great but not upto Michelin standards. Thou with a little more training they could be. The venue lacked an experience Sommelier, hence we had to determine which wine to pair with our various dishes as we opted not to do the wine pairing. One tip, offer a wine menus in English. Where improvements are need to bring it up to Michelin standard were; They failed to issue us with a tasting menu was presented to us, making it difficult to follow the dining experience as we had no reference to the journey. We also noticed that various staff had various degree of knowledge of the dishes. I think we should training they could improve that. The tasting menu itself was too fish heavy with only one plate offering a non fish main ingredient. The dishes were presented well, but nothing special. Each dish tasted similar to the next. The only non fish dish was duck, which thou above average was not consistent, what I mean is that some got a leg, others got a breast. Our party had two vegetarians and one vegan. The overall feedback was the dishes were presented well, but again lack imagination and many simply tasted the same. This place has so much potential if they take simply take a look at their menu and consider searching for a chef with the imagination the venue deserves. At the price point, their have some work to do. Overall we give this venue 3/5.

Google
In short, don't bother. My review refers to the vegetarian tasting menu experience with wine pairing, which was €120 for food plus €95 for wine pairing. It was an utterly underwhelming experience from start to finish. Food: Really terrible. Every dish was bland, boring, and unimaginative. There were a couple of dishes we didn't even want to finish because they were almost hilariously bad; a small bowl of dry roasted quinoa and a plate of hot, wet salty lettuce were the worst offenders. A lot of what we were served was clearly slightly altered components of the meat/fish tasting menu, which is fine in theory, but when you take something out you need to put something back in, namely flavour. However, our friend who had the meat/fish tasting menu enjoyed all their food. Service: The staff were friendly, but it felt like we were being served by inexperienced teenagers doing their first holiday jobs. There was no attempt made to explain the meal we were eating of the wine we were being served. Atmosphere: The view is undeniable, but the atmosphere in the restaurant is so odd. The lights are bright white overhead spotlights which are turned up high all night. The restaurant does not feel at all luxurious or romantic. Drinks: The wine served was fine - good quality wines. There was no explanation of what we were drinking other than a quick glance at the bottle. The dessert wine was served in a champagne flute. The sparkling water is clearly carbonated on site and was unpleasantly flat. Mirador de Ulía should stop offering a vegetarian menu until they are prepared to put some effort into it.

Google
Absolutely amazing experience! Probably the best meal we have ever had. My partner and I shared a meal here and I ordered their fully vegan menu and was blown away by the creativity. There was a dish with vegan cheese that I swore was the real thing. My partner had the regular menu and was completely impressed. They were very accommodating and even moved us to the front because my partner asked if they could so he could propose! After the proposal, they gave us champagne on the house. And oh my god the view was incredible. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Yelp
The food, the view, and the service were all wonderful. We also really appreciated that they were flexible. One of us is a vegetarian and the other is lactose intolerant. We got one Vegetarian Menu and one Degustacion Menu without lactose. When you make the reservation, they ask about allergies and children so that they can tailor your meal to your needs. Our server was a lovely woman (Olatz) who was friendly and knowledgeable. She did a very nice job describing each dish without being obnoxious or pretentious. She paid attention so that she wasn't rushing us through the courses with a very nice pacing. She was attentive without being intrusive. We did not get the wine pairing but ordered individual glasses of wine which were 7 EUR each, water was 4 EUR and espresso at the end of the meal was 3 EUR. The food was wonderful with great flavors, combinations, and creativity.

Yelp
Absolute chaos. Courses were missed, wine pairings were late and missed, the staff was clearly overwhelmed. I was served two dishes I am allergic to after communicating my allergy (which was confirmed understood) several times. And the owner didn't care at all that she was creating a bad experience, as she doubled down and made an inappropriate remark about me not being from Spain

Yelp
A fantastic view but such a pity that the dining is bad... Went to the restaurant - as highly recommended. View was breathtaking and this is definitely one of the best spots. Reception was OK with an excellent drink and nice bread. From here...Cold, unpleasantly air conditioning and the personel saw that at least at three tables all guests took their clothes / overcoats. Light was too bright - no atmosphere at all. Only a tasting menu was available, but there was no overall presentation. Wine was supposed to be paired, but the sommelier offered only one bottle of white wine, that frankly was not impressive. Again no presentation, and it was not complementary. At our table and at another table there was a discussion about a glass of red wine paired with the meat, but that was "forgotten" (and it is not an issue of cost). 12 courses - absolutely too much as they were served over 4 hours and many did not really differ in texture or taste. Overall very bland as taste and texture, nothing special nothing wow. Poorly presented - some personnel was unable to speak english, using only fake smiles and a too repeated "scuze me" (a uncoordinated "dance of several persons and not a sense that you had a maitre d" or somebody that was really caring for you). When the meat course arrived, we were announced that there is no more beef and we should taste duck. Refusing, we were offered with contempt Waygu beef, which was horribly cooked and tasted...By the end of the 4 hours one of the toilet cabins was dirty., The price was one 50 per cent more than in another Michelin restaurant in Bilbao. So this should be downgraded or change the chef or the chef was absent. Poor experience excepting the magnificent view

Yelp
Amazing 5-star experience all around: the view, the food, and the service! Great value among the Michelin options, but clear winner for the view. Ecstatic with our choice; highly recommended. View: 15 minutes drive from downtown. Online photos showed nice night and day views, but we chose lunch to maximize visibility. Smart choice: One of our best dining views to date. We sat in front of the panoramic windows and were treated to spectacular views of San Sebastián city, beaches and mountains. TIP: earlier lunch seating probably gives best views. Food: There were 2 tasting menus: we chose the 10-course "de la casa" (house) menu. Food was varied and beautifully presented. We loved the lamb rump mosaic, green apple and cider, live clam rice, and "interludio". Other dishes were good, but not at the same level. We were also treated to an extra dessert course and coffee/baileys shot - a great way to end the meal. We felt the wine pairing was pricey, so opted for a recommended bottle of Albariño which complemented most of the courses, a glass of red rioja for the meats, and a muscatel for dessert. Didn't feel like a compromise. Service: Wonderful staff especially Xabier and Jonathan who took care of us. Service was laid back, sometimes slow, but always warm and friendly. We took over 3 hours for the entire meal, but loved the whole experience.

Yelp
First off, the view from this place is unparalleled. The overall ambiance, and service is also exceptional. The tasting courses are plated immediately after the sommelier pours the wine pairing, and explains the wine and how it'll fit in with the dish. The timing of this seems difficult, as he is covering every table in the restaurant, but you wouldn't know it based on how seamless the service is. Overall, the food was quite good, but I'm not sure that it was life-changing in anyway, which is typically the standard I hold restaurants with Michelin stars. One of the highlights was the tomato ice cream that accompanied a crayfish salad; this was an innovative way to bring acidity to the dish. In the same light, the apple palate cleanser brought that pop of acid and was quite original, not to mention the gorgeous presentation. The meat course of perfectly prepared duck was excellent, and paired with a hazelnut praline, adding texture to the dish. All-in-all Mirador was a 4.5 star experience. It was excellent, sure, but I've had better tasting menus in other places. So if you consider that fact, coupled with San Seb having the best food in the world; it needs to be knocked down a star. Tip - this place is off the beaten path, so you'll need to take a cab up. The staff will kindly call you one for your return.

Yelp
The view of San Sebastián is fantastic, the food unfortunately is not. Came here for dinner while on holiday and did the tasting menu. The food generally did not have that fresh taste that you come to expect at a Michelin starred restaurant. And while some of the courses had a lot going on, none of them were particularly new or exciting - they seemed old, tried and played out. In fact, that's the impression that I got from the entire restaurant - one that's stuck in the 90s in its dish presentation (with dots of sauces coloring the plate), decor, and service (balloon parting gifts). Also, disappointing as this was my most expensive meal during my trip to Spain and one of my least favorite - and I tried this in lieu of Azark and Akelarre.

Yelp
Mirador de Ulia is a beautiful restaurant with glorious, sweeping views of San Sebastian. They gave us the best seat in the house. More impressive is that it served some of the most excellent dishes we had in our vacation in Basque Country. It's certainly deserving of its Michelin star. High praise for the squid in blank ink risotto, which was perfectly cooked. The beef tartare was amazing as well. The presentation and creativity in their dishes were quite impressive. San Sebastian continues to impress and this restaurant fits right in. If you love food of all forms and price points, San Sebastian should be on your list.

Yelp
The food is on another level, and the desert is pure art. If you are looking for a special place with a view, this is it!

Yelp
I could bet this restaurant won't hold its Michelin star for 2019. The view is breathtaking, unfortunately the service and the food are not to par. We ordered the 'Menu Degustación' and enjoyed some inventive dishes but they ended up missing on the taste, texture or overall balance. The server misled us on the sequence of the dishes and I ended up ordering the wrong wine for desert because I was told we had a fish dish left. At the end, the server charged me for a wrong bottle of wine and I realized at the moment of paying the bill. With the vast offering of great food in San Sebastián, I felt I missed a chance to experience something unique and ended up disappointed for what I paid for... the view couldn't compensate the lack of taste and service.

Yelp
Whoa, yes, go here, take the cab ride, spend the money, worth every cent. Dynamite service, exquisite food, aesthetics perfect. Only one Michelin star? I'm not sure why it isn't three. Perfect reception, amazing wine pairings, tasting menu worth the three hour lunch.
