Best Indian Food in Boston | Eater Boston

"Mirchi Nation Kitchen has locations in Brookline, Quincy, and Marlborough, serving both North and South Indian cuisine. Their dosas are popular, but the uttapams, thick savory pancakes with crispy edges, are the can’t-miss order. The lamb keema dosa, a dosa filled with minced lamb and spices, is also a hit. The restaurant also offers drinks like lassi, Thums Up (India’s spicy cola), and chikoo shakes made from the sweet, caramel-like chikoo fruit (also known as sapodilla)." - Helena Mistry

Google
Excellent biryani indian food! Their curry leaf chicken/pepper fry and chicken shahensha are also tasty! Love their chicken 65, old city chicken briyani. However, their portion is quite inconsistent. Someday I got biryani to the brim someday it’s only half-filled. I wish they could be more consistent. But taste wise it’s amazing and flavorful.

Google
Ordered food from Uber Eats - In the name of Biryani they served herb rice and chicken curry in between. You can’t fool desi (Indian) people with the food. Biryani was salty. Apollo fish fry was salty and why there was some yogurt on top of it. Made it soggy. The yogurt gravy in the Murgh masala was still raw. I can see the white spots of Dahi (yogurt).

Google
Chicken boneless biryani is very tasty 😋🤤, Dosa is so good and chutney reminds me of my home 🥹, Staff were very friendly and polite 😊.

Google
Great place for a late night bite. Highly recommend the masala dosa — comes with an array of sauces that are all great! Also tried the chikoo shake, which was very unique but a bit too sweet for my taste. Service is fast, and there are bathrooms!

Google
My colleague brought me food from Mirchi Nation in Boston, and it was absolutely worth it! Even after the long flight to Seattle, the flavors were still on point. The biryani was packed with spice and aroma, and everything tasted super fresh. Definitely one of the best dum biryani, I’ve had in a while—wish I could get more of it here!

Google
They will serve food but they don’t have water when we ask for water he said we have to pay for water bottles worst management

Google
The food tastes great! Their curry is very good as we had in Indian.

Google
I ordered the 65 Chicken Biryani, Samosa, Mango Lassi and Badam Milk, and they were amazing! The Mango lassi had a distinct, creamy and tangy yogurt taste while the Badam was sweet and light. The chicken biryani was definitely the highlight as it had the perfect amount of spice and heat!

Yelp
Total crap. Ordered Idli and dosas and both were disappointing. Idli was dry, the chutney was watery and the dosas were mediocre.

Yelp
This was bad as it gets all the way down there. I enjoyed one last time as I was on top of heaven. I didn't get any love from this time at all and I was depressed at my max. Sabz Kolapuri I am positing photos of good and bad I don't get how the heck Sabz went from greatest to worst on my life. Really bad. Mind job. Young lady works at counter was nice.

Yelp
I had catering from this place at someone's event from the Marlborough, so was glad they opened one in the neighborhood. The lamb kheema dosa was really good, great flavor in the lamb kheema. Didn't really need Sambhar but that was good too. Dosa batter tasted fresh, wasn't super crispy but crispy enough. Can't wait to try more!

Yelp
We were very excited for a cool looking new Indian restaurant to open in Brookline with an interesting menu. But it was disappointing on several fronts. We tried a mix of apps - chicken 999, kachori chat, and chole bhatura. The flavor was good, I'll give it that. I wasn't blown away by it, but tasty. However, it's really hard to know if anything is being prepared on site. It felt like a "reheat and serve" meal which is not what I'm looking for when I eat in a restaurant. It's also served in plastic to-go containers which again points to the reheat and serve point I described. I feel like they had all the makings of a good new restaurant - colorful, vibrant decor, interesting variety of menu items (some hard to find dishes too), and in a location that really could have used a fun Indian restaurant. But alas, the execution is poor.

Yelp
A little expensive for the portion size and some dishes were a little too salty without the mango lassi. That mango lassi was delicious though! I'd come back just for that. At first bite, the ghee roast chicken hit all of my senses. The spices and flavors tasted like home. The more I ate it the saltier it got so I wished it came with rice or naan. The butter chicken was pretty good. Chicken in both dishes were soft and cooked well. The workers are also kind and attentive especially since it was my first time there.

Yelp
One of the best places for South Indian street food and Indochinese in Brookline Food: Highly recc the biriyani (approved by family members who are from Hyderabad)- any of the chicken, goat, chilly chicken biriyani are excellent Dosa is pretty good, especially with the coconut chutney Mirchi bhajji Chilly chicken Mutton fry Butter chicken was ok- too much spice, could be creamier Other: Friendly staff, fast service Small space open late nights TLDR; A place that delivers on chatpatta flavor and leaves you coming back for more!

Yelp
Went in with a lot of anticipation considering we loved the food at Mirchi Nation - Marlborough location. Bit disappointed. The Brookline location is small hole in wall type setup with maybe seating for max. 10 people, very similar to the business around them. We ordered takeout which was prompt and ready on time. Their famous Mirchinator wings fell short. The sauce was more ketchupy and the chicken did not taste fresh or spice infused. The malabar paratha were bad. They were not fresh and tasted of rancid oil. Felt they were the regular store bought frozen parathas which went stale. The butter chicken was good and the gravy was flavourful. The Menu does not include your usual Breads (tandoori roti, naans etc.). Probably they just opened and might include these in future. Looks like a good place to try out light Indian snack food: appetizers, chats, dosas and different versions of Maggie (popular ramen brand in India)

Yelp
We went to the Quincy site. Many gluten-free fried items are on the menu, but they do not have a dedicated frying station for these items, so they are cross-contaminated if ordered. The dishes were never removed from the table, even though we stacked them within reach of the server.

Yelp
Delicious but incredibly spicy, in a wonderful way! Their biryanis are delicious, we loved the goat, and while their pav bhaji was a tad salty, it was still a hit!

Leanne S.

Yelp
Amazing place! Portions are huge, they have different levels of spice for different palates, and my husband is from Kerala and outside of NYC has trouble finding decent Indian food. This is one of the only Indian restaurants in Boston he likes. We haven't eaten in, only gotten food delivered. Have tried the butter chicken, chicken tikka, naan, samosa chaat, goat korma, mango lassi, and all good. They also have a lot of Indian street snacks that not all restaurants have around here. I haven't been to their restaurant in Marlborough, but the one in Brookline is really good. Also make sure when you're ordering on their website you choose the correct restaurant, because it defaults to Marlborough.

Yelp
Wow! Finally a legit south indian place in Boston! The biriyanis here are amazing. We got the chicken 65 biryani, goat biriyani, and old city biriyani. They were all terrific and tasted authentic. Boston was in desperate need of an authentic south indian (Telangana probably ) place and now it finally has one!! The dosa was good too..wish they gave more sambar with it. Please do yourself a favor and try some food that's not just the same American-punjabi-style items (i.e Tikka masala, butter chicken, naan, etc) and experience some legit south indian dishes!

Yelp
A perfect take-out destination. We loved our Aloo Gobi, Punjabi Chole Masala, and Malabar Fish Curry. The Malabar Paratha was also phenomenal. It's so good we went twice in less than a week and already can't wait to order again. A Brookline gem.

Yelp
Went in the other day as I had heard much about their other location, and was thrilled to have new South Indian food options in/around Coolidge Corner. As others have mentioned, the place is small - do not plan to eat here if you have a group. Perhaps because they're still new, they were out of a few items - like lamb (another guest had requested it) and idlis/uttapam. The teams recommendation of the Chicken 999 was a good one - the appetizer was excellent and ridiculous spicy which I love. The Curry Leaf chicken was equally good AND equally spicy. We took whatever remained home. The biryani was solid but the rice is served on top of the chicken - had us questioning how it's made (ususally the protein is mixed in?) - but the taste was good enough, so we took the leftovers home. The dosa was a bummer - masala and sambhar were tasty but the dosa was thick, not crispy at all. I took a star away for the presentation in ALL plastic and styrofoam as you see in the pictures... and the lack of water readily available (so you needed to buy a plastic bottle of water). For $63+, should it really be this much waste, especially when dining in store? Might as well take it all home if you're removing plastic lids and eating with plastic utensils? I'd urge the folks to reconsider all the trash. MAY try take out one time - based on the apps alone as I assume some of the above stems from being new - but felt my first time was average.

Yelp
Small place, only 3 tables. Food was good, but very expensive for what is essentially a take out place. The quantity of food is quite small, and the amount of meat they give you in the entrees is pathetic. The Malabar fish curry had 4 really small pieces of boneless fish. Cost $19. The butter chicken entree had maybe 7 tiny pieces. Cost $15. The Malabar Parothas were, get this, $6.50. For the cost they charge, you would expect that you can at least sit there and eat in real plates. Nope, absolutely cheap styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery. Save your money and disappointment. Go to Punjab Palace or literally any other Indian place nearby.

Yelp
Fast Service, soul satisfying Indian/desi food and ambience that transports you to a different space (think desi-modern)!!

Annika S.

Yelp
My family and I loved it here! Keep in mind that it's more of a takeout option (they only have room for ~8 people to sit), but they serve awesome unique takes on Indian street-style food.

Lisa B.

Yelp
I tried the Brookline location. It was just average. Portions were small and fried foods seemed a bit greasy, not super fresh.

Yelp
Ordered takeout of their chicken biryani and mysore masala dosa. The biryani was a solid 3. Will I get it again? Nope. The dosa, getting it for delivery, was not going to be the same as eating in. So it will be unfair to rate its freshness but I'd say madras dosa co. In seaport is better in terms of flavor

Yelp
We've ordered a couple different times from here and we've always been incredibly happy with the food. With a lack of great South Asian cuisine in the Boston area/Brookline, we've now finally found our go to restaurant for flavorful, spicy Indian food. The Chicken 65 Biryani is especially good. The basmati rice always tastes fresh and the chicken is amazing. We also really love the Chicken Manchurian, which is great with plain rice. The menu is huge so I'm looking forward to trying more options. The restaurant itself is quite small, however the decor and artwork is very charming. We've only done take out or delivery but would love to eat a meal there sometime. Overall, so glad to finally have some decent Desi food

Yelp
The Nizami Chicken biryani was fantastic, and the bulk order delivery arrived even earlier than expected!

Yelp
Freakin love it! Food is awesome finally something really authentic and flavorful in Boston/Brookline. It's a small place may be 15ppl can sit, ambience is good I like the wall murals. Place was crowded I guess I went on the opening day. But food came out in time. Met the owner what a gentleman I met him in Marlborough location as well. Good Luck guys. My office is in Boston, I figured it's a 17mins drive for me. You will see a lot of me. :)

Yelp
Wonderful new restaurant right around the corner! We were very happy with the chicken biryani we had. The flatbread was amazing as was the veg dish and the iddly starter. It is not your typical Indian restaurant and has many Hyderbadi dishes with unique flavours.

Mihailo S.

Yelp
Reminded me of my moms food so much I had to bring it back for her to try. The service was friendly and the music nostalgic

Alex I.

Yelp
I have tried nearly every Indian restaurant in Boston, and this is the most authentic South Indian food I have found!
