How to Help Fight Food Insecurity in D.C. | Eater DC

"A nonprofit focused on ending chronic homelessness that serves healthy breakfasts and dinners Monday through Friday, has suspended much of its kitchen volunteer program due to the pandemic but still offers limited roles like handing out to-go boxes and organizing items in its garage, and accepts online donations." - Tierney Plumb

I have been volunteering at Miriam's Kitchen for the last 7 years as Sous Chef and Dining Room Captain and am committed and devoted to their mission and ministry of ending homelessness in the DMV and also feeding the homeless and hungry. I will be volunteering here forever. Also of note: all the food serves to the homeless guests of Miriam's Kitchen are made from scratch from ingredients provided locally by farmers, local markets and grocery stores, and so forth. Even the juice served is generally fresh. It's pretty much a completely foodie experience each and every time.

I'm Blown Away by the good at this place is doing. Homeless fighting for human rights on DC streets for years, away these last 2 years, and back seeing the population in this place, people that have grown so much. It is quite extraordinary. Thank you for your work. Tho Amy and one other need to remember we clients are equal, not lesser, Souls, worthy of being treated with the same respect that they would show their boss's boss's boss, as the other staff do..

Been there once with a friend. Never been homeless before up until now, lost both of my parents due to pandemic and siblings all walked away from me, I didn't know there was kind people out there who would help those whom are either homeless or just struggling just so they can get back correctly, it's been wonderful to see such a beautiful place like Miriam's Kitchen and the volunteers to come and help and support those that are in needs. I am very grateful though I am still struggling to get out of the homeless lifestyle and become home-ful I will definitely continue to return to Miriam's.

Yelp
Such a wonderful place!!! Their staff is so friendly and attentive. I've came here several times and will continue to come too as long as they offer voucher for birth certificates and other wonderful assistance for low-income families. It appears that the client whom come there is very loyal and many of the staff knows the clients by their names. It felt so warm and welcoming.

Yelp
I volunteer here twice-a-month as a sous-chef and floor captain. I have been for over a year now. I try to volunteer more. Miriam's Kitchen is committed to the community and to the homeless of Washington, DC. If you are down on your luck, I recommend coming to Miriam's for breakfast or dinner. If you're looking to give back, please consider giving and/or volunteering at Miriam's Kitchen.

Yelp
This location is tucked inside a Presbyterian church. And what a wonderful place it is! When I went to donate, they gave me a tour of their headquarters, with the community area, kitchen preparation, and organized donation area. I'm very impressed with the projects and partnerships they to tackle chronic homelessness, there aim is to help the most longer bowl population. It's a big jump in the do it incredibly.

Yelp
Miriams Kitchen is on top of things when it comes to services. When you find yourself in between housing and in need of assistance it is the place to be. One case manager asked my me E-mail name and I found out I had to automate, that I was so far behind the student population that I poured out my guts explaining and demonstrating a sixties Howard University education.I had a very enjoyable time at Miriams where I was allowed to purchase equipment and continue studying in architecture. Thanks a Million, What a service!

Yelp
The workers don't seem to care. When donations come the staff take all the good stuff and the less fortunate are left in scraps to use or wear. Rather then helping less fortunate the staff just look at these less fortunate folks as a head and making $$$ off off these people. It's so sad when these less fortunate cannot even get a good meal. The night i volunteered the meat was raw to the point of not done very bloody looking. It's funny when these people are giving for example. Smart trips (metro subway fare card), baseball game tickets, even food wise I saw what Miriam's Kitchen staff be taking. Play as if nothing happened. As a true fact I seen for myself, I noticed Miriam's Kitchen taking less fortunate folks to baseball games instead of who wanted to go Miriam's Kitchen chose who to take In the end, Miriam's Kitchen is falling apart drastically. I was a person who volunteered with Miriam's Kitchen. The head man who was in charge decided to let a man get away with touching a girl. How do you explain this Miriam's Kitchen? When I seen that the head man who didn't even call the police and didn't even bar him for touching this girl. I notice that the security are a joke. Between the 5 years I been volunteering with Miriam's Kitchen I seen security try to pick up on females. The main reason I am leaving as a volunteer for Miriam's is because after seeing this man touch a girl. I was Astounded by this that I don't want to ever return back here. Not only that this Miriam's Kitchen is renting from a church and working out of the Church's basement this is what is going on . Thank you.

Yelp
Miriam's Kitchen is really a great service to our DC community! For the past year, I have volunteered here about 1-2 times a month for the morning shift preparing breakfast to the homeless in Washington DC. Miriam's Kitchen has an amazing, enthusiastic and passionate staff who lovingly serve those in need around us. Not only do they provide healthy, creative and delicious meals, they also offer other services (i.e. career, legal). I highly recommend to participate in volunteering at Miriam's Kitchen for those who want to give back to our community. In addition to a meaningful contribution, I have met so many cool people volunteering here who I probably otherwise would not have the opportunity to run into in our busy city!

Yelp
I love volunteering with Miriam's Kitchen and no one experience has been the same. The regular MK staff are friendly and helpful and the different volunteers and chefs that I've worked with have been amazing! They have both in-kitchen and out-of kitchen volunteer activities and I enjoy it each time.

Yelp
I volunteered at Miriam's Kitchen for the first time last week - 6am to 8:15am and have to say I was thoroughly impressed with the whole operation. First of all the people who manage the kitchen, the dinning area, and the services are all amazing. The other volunteers were up beat and helpful for the new bees and all the homeless who came in for breakfast were friendly. All in all a great experience which I would highly recommend.
