What a MISERABLE experience! At first I thought I had finally found a place that would deliver _vegetarian_ soon tofu (on this menu: Tofu Chi Gae) to my house. So, if you're following: We're looking for a spicy soft tofu stew, with NO MEAT in it, brought to my house. I also ordered some kimchi pancakes (kimchi jeon) & vegetarian dumplings (man du twee gim). Granted, a lot of Korean food isn't typically vegetarian, but they've got this "Make it vegetarian!" radio button to tap that gives you the impression they've got this under control.
SPOILER: They do not have this under control.
I bit into a dumpling and thought... huh... this is some really weird TVP. I ate the dumpling. I started eating another... & the mouthfeel was all wrong. Upon closer inspection, the dumplings are full of some kind of meat. Great, there goes that.
Next up, the kimchi pancakes. Greasy AF, but edible.
Next up, that tofu stew I've been craving ever since I moved to the Twin Cities last year. I pour it into bowls... & first off, this isn't a soft tofu stew; it's more of a spicy soup broth with cut up slices of medium-firm tofu in it. The broth smells like meat stock, but I keep telling myself it's just the egg -- I really, *really* want some damn tofu stew. But one bite in, & what's this awful texture in my mouth? That's right, it's BOILED MEAT! I spit it out. Dinner = ruined.
Adding insult to injury in this debacle is everything about dealing with Grubhub. I requested a text when the order was delivered -- but I got no text and no knock or doorbell ring, so my hot food sat on my cold, cold doorstep until I went to check because it had been a while.
And then when I called Grubhub to be like, "Yo, can I have my ~$50 back?", they didn't want to comp the order; they only wanted to comp the two "not-actually-vegetarian vegetarian" items. WTF? I wouldn't have placed this order if I'd known I wasn't going to get the #%&!ing vegetarian tofu stew; I wouldn't have paid the service fee or the tax; I wouldn't have tipped 20%. Comping just the "vegetarian" items means I paid ~$30 for one kimchi pancake left on my 13-degrees-Fahrenheit doorstep. Yeah, no. (I had to press firmly & repeatedly, but I eventually got my full refund.)
So, in summary: It wasn't a real soft tofu stew; it was, in fact, full of meat; & by "brought to my house," I mean it was dropped on my porch without anyone bothering to let me know. Definitely the last time I order from Mirror of Korea, and probably the last time I use Grubhub to try anyplace new.
